Great nostalgia trip for me! I was born in 1970. At a very tender age of 18 months, I inherited my uncle's old Dansette Junior De Luxe and a stack of 7" singles from the 60s, mostly Cliff Richard, Beach Boys, The Seekers and The Barron Knights, and quickly learned how it all worked. Always wondered when I would ever run into a 16rpm disc, but it never happened. (Reason: the format was intended for audiobooks, and flopped early). I did have a couple of 78rpm discs, and was instructed to flip the stylus round to the green side. I think the very first words I learned to read were "Bachelor Boy", and this was just by listening to the records and finding the same words printed on the labels. I still have reveries going back to that time when I smell that very distinct warm aroma that emerges from old record players and radiograms. And "Wind Chimes" by the Beach Boys is still one of my all-time favourite tracks. Some years later my Junior De Luxe was replaced by a Dansette Viva, which was not quite so charming in appearance, but a better machine overall, later a Panasonic music centre with a slide-out cassette tray and STEREO speakers, but I will never forget my Dansette Junior De Luxe.

The orange/red high output Fu-Fi TC8 cartridge will produce around 4 volts if it is ok. The Ronette Fonofluid isn't high enough output...The only Acos cartridge with the exception of the Hi-G is the 91-3...If you use a 91-1 you will only get a squeak out of it. You need a BSR X3H or X5H giving full output to drive that amp. They aren't keen on pre-amps...I do have a Major of my own that I have done this with. It's ok...But a high output cartridge works far better. Good luck! :)

ah...i tried the original bsr orange bullet shaped turnover, i had a few others kicking about, a acos 91 and a ronnette fonofluid turnover....i thought 1 volt output was about right for a crystal cartidge? i suppose i could fit a bsr H cartridge [ceramic] and make up a little preamp to give it a bit more into the grid of the el84...whats your thoughts? thanks, bob

I take it those hinges stop at 45 degrees?

You say...Cartridge is fine nearly a volt output and the audio is low. I think this is where your problem is...These old amps need volts in! What cartridge are you using?

hi, don't know if you can help me? i restore jukeboxes, but someone asked me to restore a dansette major [single EL84] i cant get any volume out the thing...recapped, new diode and valve...the most i can get out is about a 2 volt swing on the scope, the cartridge is fine [nearly a volt output] how loud should they be? the qaulity is not bad, just no volume! my workshop tranny is louder! if this is how they are, might junk the amp and put a solid state one in...hope you can help, cheers.

@JPa311979 You are correct...They do! All the brass work was made by a company called 'Cheney' They are no longer in business...The catches and hinges I showed are all Cheney 'New old Stock' and identical to the originals. Thanks for commenting! :)
