Daryl Hall has filed a lawsuit against his former musical compadre John Oates, claiming some form of breach of contract. What's more, Hall got a restraining order against Oates this past Friday.

This is so sad. 50 years of making music and they end up in court. At their time of life, do they really need this nonsense? My favouite group of all time and the greatest in my opinion, the Beatles ended up suing each over all over the place but at least they had the excuse of being young idiots with the situation not being helped due to their founder, Mr Lennon, being brain addled with drugs. I hope Mr Hall and Mr Oates can come to an agreement but I doubt they will.

I've liked Hall & Oates since I was a teenager. I saw them live at a small venue (Music Hall) in Houston in 1977. I just watched Daryl Hall's interview with Dan Rather from May '23 and it sounded like things were ok. He spoke fondly about meeting John Oates, their relationship, writing songs together, etc., but when Dan Rather asked about what happened to all the money, Daryl's whole demeanor changed. He said he always had an adversarial relationship to the music industry and compared it to organized crime. Really sad.

There also would be no Hall and Oates without Daryl. I agree with what Daryl Hall is doing, John has no right selling Daryl’s share. Why does it seem like you’re trying to make Daryl out to be the bad guy here…? Daryl is just trying to protect his own interest. I’m sure if you were in his shoes, you would want to do the same.

I thought for a restraining order there needs to be a threat to someone’s life? I’ve never heard of a restraining order for purely business reasons.

The restraining order by Hall is to put a pause or stop on the sale of the publishing rights that Oates wants to do. It seems as though things didn't work during the arbitration. Oates wants to sell his share.

I've noticed very recently that many older big name songwriters are selling their catalog to a particular company. My take on this is that Oates wants to sell his half of their songs and Hall opposes this.

In hindsight, I’m just grateful they were able to keep it together as long as they did. This could have easily become a ‘Noel and Liam’ situation by the mid-‘80s.

In the late 70's I told my friends that Hall and Oates got heir name from what they did for a living before music. They were truck drivers and they used to deliver grains so they names the group "Haulin' Oats"

I believe the reason is simple, John Oates wants to retire on his terms by selling his publishing rights. Why shouldn't he be able to? I don't blame him because he's in his 70s and $100m is good money to live the rest of his life. I'm not sure what the amount is, but I'm assuming it will be well over $100m. It all depends on their agreement/contract. I have a strong feeling Oates is not bound to a contract, otherwise why would he pursue the sale...

I think he's sick of Hall. Hall has been dissing him for years, saying they were never friends, just business partners. Oates is probably thinking "I'm too old for this stuff. I want out". Can't blame him. Why stay connected to someone that hates you?

Seems like 1 out maybe 3 SUPER Famous groups or duos, there is a heart breaking disagreement, & then it hurts the World because these groups are bigger than life in a way.. I am sure he ( Daryl) has a huge ego. And Bill Maher talked about all the one night stand he had because he was a rockstar. He didn’t do much drugs or alcohol, but he said he certainly had a lot of women and I know he has a child a one night stand..

I really was never a Hall and Oates fan, I men they have some great ear worms, but I don’t own any of their music or anything. That said, I love Live At Daryl’s House, it’s so much fun watching & I am a longtime fan of that show on RU-vid. I read in the comments that Hall is difficult to work with, but I think this is a royalties issue, Hall doesn’t want Oates playing music Hall wrote, or playing concerts under the name Hall and Oates, if Hall is not performing at said shows.

If you've followed Hall and Oates for a long time and read/watched many of their interviews, it's very evident that Daryl Hall is an extremely difficult guy to get along with. I don't say this with any anger toward him, but it's evident he's a troubled guy.

About 5 years ago I went to a Hall & Oates concert. Hall was in BAD shape & could barely sing! Oates sounded great! So sad but Hall seems so burnt out!
