Know where you stand on lane rates when calling to book a load. If you do not know what the lane rate average is, you could be shooting yourself in the foot before you turn one mile. Know the rates, have an Edge when negotiating a load.

Also- I After 31 years as an independent- I find the annual 'Sweet Spot" of around $140-$150k....I take 6 weeks vacation per year at my age- When you start grossing $190-$225-$290k per year- Money looks good BUT- you really gotta be careful with the IRS...This is very helpful advice- people become "Spenders" when the money gets good...And become forgetful. I pay around 12-14k per year in taxes STEADY over the last 20 years or so-..You start making 200-300k You can only write off so much- I have a good CPA and Im sure you do to..Be Careful- Money can Ruin ya just as fast as it makes ya.

If you're making too much money you can always buy a newer truck or build/buy a shop, etc. Unless you deliberately don't want to work as much. I wouldn't keep myself from earning just because I'm afraid of the tax man. There are always places to put the money.

Look at the trucks driving on hwy. Notice that they have double plates in the front. Plates from Mexico and USA. What is happening is that companies from Mexico are taking the load to wherever and driving back with a load with 2 drivers they get paid 20 cents a mile how can we compete. I live in laredo tx. There is a company named ed group they get drivers who move trailers around the city. There are many companies doing this in laredo. I think ice has to intervene. It's like HIRING chinese people for sweat shops.i asked one driver how much they were paying him and he said 2dollars and 50cents per movement that's not even taking into consideration how many hrs it will take its flat fee

I'm pretty sure this was one of the first of your videos I watched, just forgot to like or comment. Man, now that I see it again, it is priceless information. Don't lower the rate for everyone because you want to underbid everyone.....that's probably why the rates fluctuate so much. Start high, settle high.....keep those rates going for everyone! I would recommend going very high and staying there. We have a truck shortage and price increase, but the rates are staying low. How did shipping costs increase 25% from last year (much higher rates last year) for Manufacturers but the carriers are not being paid squat? As a former O/O (got out in 1994), Wow how have things changed! We only dealt with brokers we knew, and we never had any idea what the rate really was before the broker. P.s. I never did well going to Florida with a van, I always had to do as you say, deadhead to Georgia. But that changed when I bought a reefer😎

Hey bud, I want to give you a shout out and saying thanks for putting out this info by taken the time out of your day to help increase awareness in other o/o so that they become better knowledge in their placing load bids with brokers so that it increases their profit margins as well bottom line it helps to keep a level and fair playing field as far as keeping rates up so that truckers are not cutting their nose despite their face do to under biding on broker loads which in the end kill an industry for everyone. Great Video my friend, stay safe and keep on trucking and stay between those dotted lines, take care. SPG

Thanks for the reply- could you do a simple video on what all you need to get loads? I am under the impression that a good truck, plates, and insurance is all you need to step to companies on the load board, or approach growing, and or established carriers, and smaller ones to get going... I know there is more to it(setting up your truck with tools etc.) but a brief would help some... Thanks again-
@GingerGramma04
@GingerGramma04 5 лет назад
Dominican Ronindez First you want to worry about getting your authority and stuff. And the insurance is quite expensive. Then you have to have driver files, be in a drug consortium, etc,etc, Much more than I expected. And one thing to do to reduce your taxes is to file under an "S-Corp" So you only pay taxes on the profit. And lessons your debt for other taxes on all that money. Very good luck to you.

This seems like a really good tool. I can’t wait to use it. I will also look to the area that I will be going in see how many loads are in that area because reload is a big factor as well. Rate per mile does it matter as much to me as it does how much revenue per day I make. I could waste the whole day on a short load that makes three dollars a mile but make more money On a longer run that actually has a lower rate. If I could hit $1000 per day I would be pretty content although I would try to do as much as I could

Good video man! I’m a shipper and the DAT is an absolute necessity. If Owner Ops are not using the DAT they aren’t doing it right. On a side note, the Florida market has absolutely exploded with produce and plants and that’s why the offer rate into FL are lower than the 15 day average. Load are paying $4-5 per mile out of FL right now. Get down there and make some $$$

Great video. Wish there were more people sharing this type of topic here. FYI, I remember when DAY started publishing these lane rates. At the time they reported the data was 1 week old, so a 15 day average would be the 15 days that occurred 7 days ago. Also while this is a great tool that we all should be using it is not always correct. For years it would report truckload rates out of New England that were much higher than what we would pay. This was due to the carriers that were reporting their rates were mostly large companies with contracted dedicated lanes. Spot market can be much different. Also take the DOT crackdown two weeks ago. Rates shot way up, but the rate tool was still reporting data from the weeks before. What I have seen since the dawn of this rate tool is that the rate tool is controlling or attempting to control the rates. This is not good for carriers or shippers/brokers because it is a deviation from the free market. I like how in the video he shows us how many exact matches to his search he got and the rates being offered. Another thing I do is to search the amount of trucks looking for loads as well to get an understanding of the truck to load ratio. Clearly when I get a load out of Miami going to Chicago, I can simply do a search on both equipment and loads and see there are 500+ trucks to 3 loads, the rate tool will show $2.00 per mile, but we end up moving it at $1.10 pm for example. That being said dont misunderstand the motive, its not to deny the carrier a chance to make money, its to make sure we continue to get business from our clients, if we just start letting the rate creep up on them they will look to other sources. Hence why the free market is so important and why we all must stay on top of things.

Yes or lease with a carrier that will allow you to run the load boards. Fresh in I would go Dry van. If you have experience with flats or reefer, go that route. It's more of preference :)

Specialized work pays that just being a leased driver without having to do any of that... It's nice to see what y'all are doing out there, but I'm glad I don't have to deal with any of that.... I just call dispatch and get my next load.

You cant put a price in simplicity JP. But I wouldn't change what I do go through.... I believe I'm an addict to the game I play every load I call on lol

123loadboard, also offer that plus more for only 35/month when you use a promo code or sign up thunderfunding factoring. Can find the code online and RU-vid it floating around. That board only few yrs old but becoming one of the big ones fast

Is it normal that a broker would have ya sign 250+ forms 3-5 signatures per form

How much do you get for fuel surcharge is it percentage or dollar amount thanks
@MakeCentsTrucking
@MakeCentsTrucking 5 лет назад
its included within rates. On the open market its not really a thing like it is to lease drivers with a company.
