In this case we repair a dead hard drive and recover the data from it. We demonstrate how a hard drive can exhibit symptoms of a dead PCB (controller board), but in actuality, it is a case where the heads have failed.
In some Western Digital drives it's not uncommon for a drive to not spin up at all, and the immediate first thought is that the controller board is dead. The problem is, the board actually works on another drive, and if you install a new board onto the failed drive...it still doesn't spin up.
In these cases it is almost always an issue with the heads. Once a head swap is performed, the drive will generally spin up without issue.
