In this case we are performing data recovery on a 320GB Seagate Momentus Thin laptop hard drive. The drive was completely inaccessible at first. We swapped out the heads, and the drive functioned to some extent, but operated in a severely degraded state.
We checked for firmware issues, but there were no underlying firmware related problems to cause the problem we were having. We then swapped out another set of heads, with the thinking that the first set were either weak or just starting to fail. Again, we had the exact same degraded imaging speed.
We allowed the drive to image on one of our Deepspar imagers for about 10 days. It was going so slowly still that we decided to use another set of heads to see if by chance it would speed up. Again, no improvement. So we've resigned to let it continue until completed. The drive has been imaging for about 24 days as of this posting
This is a classic example of a hard drive that has degraded platters. The actual ferromagnetic media that coats the platters begins to break down. When this happens it throws off the drives ability to read the tracks properly. Even though all of the "reading" is done magnetically.
There's really no way to speed up the data recovery process at all in cases like this. Any and all flexibility we have with our hardware imager is being utilized to get the speed we are getting, even though it is still extremely slow.

do you guys use anything other than DDI for imaging?

+HDD Recovery Services Yes we do, plus we have our own in house imager that we use for quick recovery jobs. It just happens to be DDI is the most flexible tool with difficult jobs. It's almost mandatory after head swaps or working with degraded drives.

I have an external toshiba drive, 2.5" like that, similar issues. Seems to copy 40MB or so using ddrescue, and halts at a bunch of errors. takes off again, then halts. over and over. Almost to the point to where it isnt random.

It was recovered eventually. Some fragmentation, but overall a good recovery.

How much does recovery like that cost?

+George Stobbart It totally depends on what we find to be the problem with the drive. Recoveries can range anywhere from $500 to well over $1,000. However, once we have completed the evaluation and given the final quoted price, the price doesn't go up just because we run into issues like the one shown in this video. We will most likely be working on this recover for another month or two.
