The amount of people here who don't realise he's doing it as a joke because he has too much respect to do an actual cover. Everyone's knows you don't cover Stairway to Heaven if you want your career to continue!
Guys take it easy, Dave is just making fun of people who cover the song, as most of the covers are terrible. He makes mistakes on purpose and pretends to forget the lyrics. If you want proof, look into disenchanted lullaby, all my life or let it die. All are great songs. If he wanted to cover the song properly, he would. Plus Grohl is big Zeppelin fan.
All you have to do is watch the covers of rock and roll and ramble on that they did at Wembley stadium with John Paul Jones and Jimmy Page to see how much he loves Zeppelin
Of course he knows how to play the song, he's just fucking around...the crowd enjoyed it. People need a sense of humor. However, I do believe that if he did take this song seriously, they could make one of the most kick ass covers of all time..
I totally agree but stairway is one of those songs that just shouldn't be covered out of reverence. Smells like Teen Spirit also falls into this category.

Its funny that people think he actually doesn't know the words. If you have ever heard him talk about John Bonham and Led Zeppelin you would know that they may be the single greatest music influence on his life. That being said this is hilarious.

Dave knows the go: if you're not Led Zep, your only hope of playing Stairway is to keep your sense of humour intact. This is almost better than the original, and I find that hilarious.
I guess people don't understand Dave's humor, he also covered Tiny Dancer by Elton John, as well as Leather & Lace by Stevie Nicks and Don Henly with Will Ferrel, he just likes to be a goofball thats what makes him awesome!! :)
With a little humour, a lot of charisma, Dave Grohl takes what could get you laughed off an open-mic night stage, and makes it damn good TV viewing. Way to go, guys. Hey, naysayers... we're still waiting for your acoustic set.

+Dmitry Krasilnikov It's a joke. He does that. it's part of his dorky sense of humor. Dave is definitely a professional and if you think for one second that he actually "forgot" the words to one of his favorite bands' songs, you are sadly, sadly mistaken. Also, all you have to do is listen to how he played the beginning of the song and you can totally tell he's just screwing around. It's one of the easiest pieces in the world to play.
