i was so close to filing bankruptcy 3 years ago...i worked 60-80 hour weeks for 6 months to pay off all my credit cards. that was the worst 6 months of my life.. my boss was cool about the overtime he understood my problem. i have no cards and no car loans and never will again. listen to dave he speaks common sense. dont live beyond your means.

This is why I love this guy. How rare to have someone come back from this kind of experience and devote his life to helping others avoid it. It is so important that we talk openly about debt, money and the emotions of it. It would prevent so many errors and suffering.

Did all that. BK, car taken, lost house, signed bad lease agreements, maxed out cards, and unless it happens to you - you can never "get it." It impacts YOUR mental state in BIG WAY - IN A NEGATIVE WAY.

Oh man i have been their ! I was just busy buying stuff like we all are programmed to do in life, house ,car ,furniture and finance it all.I was doing landscaping to my financed house and was listening to talk radio and Dave came on.I first thought he was crazy and it was just for rich people,so i ignored him and kept on.Then a year later i herd him on the radio again and i was deeper in debt,so i thought hmm maybe this guy knows what he is doing.I have never looked back since then.Its been 3 years since i have found him and have squashed a ton of debt.The future is looking very promising.I didn't realize what i was doing as my parents raised me to buy it if you want it and finance it.I get so many weird looks now and some nasty comments from people who haven't had their eye's open'd up yet.

Dave, I couldn't relate much but I attribute that to my High school required me to take your personal finance curriculum. I have strayed here and there from the principles you teach but it always kept me out of financial trouble and now that i'm listening to you again I feel like I'm making some real traction with my finances. Thanks for all you do.

Absolutely, growing up and getting healthy is an act of the will, it won't just happen, we have to choose to make it happen, so many times in my life I made that choice, "I have to stop doing this", "I have to go do that", "No more doing this", "time to start doing that".

My favorite video!!! I've been through (still in) the storm because of job loss and underemployment. I wouldn't change a thing because the lessons learned have been life altering! If only I had figured this out when I was young. I'm going to be coordinating Financial Peace later this year and plan on playing this video. Btw I had a Dave Ramsey fight with my cell phone provider. My phone is dying so I was researching new phones. I told the salesman I wasn't paying $500 plus for a new phone. He explained the 30 month installment plan wasn't debt because I was paying for a needed phone. I said I do the Dave Ramsey plan and yes it was debt. He said Dave Ramsey said it installment loans weren't debt. I asked him who Dave Ramsey was. He had no idea! I walked out and have found a cheap option for a new phone and it won't be with that carrier. I started an envelope to save for the new phone!

This is WAY more useful and effective than yelling at people about how stupid they are. They're vulnerable when they call. "I get it" probably helps more than "What were you THINKING?!?!?!?"

Thankyou so much Dave! I'm so glad I found you before I did really stupid stuff. Sure I have purchased a few things that were a dud, cost too much for the item etc. But I haven't been really stupid. I have learnt from you, Dave, and from my parents situation which is a complete mess. From looking at my parents situation I have vowed to never be where they are. Thankyou for spreading your message Dave! You have changed millions of lives!

Have you ever pulled up to get gas, I was to scared to check the bank account because it was ALWAYS in the red. Handed the gas attendant my debit card. And PRAYING he doesn’t hand it back. Saying it’s been denied. That happened several times. Fast forward to now. Plenty PF Money in our bank account, because of you & your team Mr. Ramsey. My library in our house will be filled with your books

oh the good old pre payment penalties i got stung on that when i was 18 or 19 first time borrowing money $3600 all because i wanted it now and not in a month and the bike got stolen a few months later and the pre payment penalties where more then the loan. With the insurance pay out of 4000 it made it 3000 still because of the early payout fees. made me so mad!

I once went to Sams Club with my boss so she could buy small Christmas presents for the team and she knew I had a club card. Well the membership needed renewal and I didn't have the $35 in my account....it was the Monday after payday. I was so ashamed and still remember the look on her face as we left to go to another store.

Serious question: It seems like so many people are dumb with money, rack up debt, but still manage to retire and get by. How?? I will still be smart with money because that is the kind of person I am, but am I the dumb one to work so hard to avoid being homeless and it doesn't seem to happen to anyone else?

@stephaniejane306
@stephaniejane306 5 лет назад
I'm not sure I am following. Debit cards is perfectly fine as long as you budget and are good at reconciling into your budget so you aren't going over on categories. The every dollar app is great for debit cards. Credit cards Dave doesn't really approve of. Remember if you have a habit of overspending on categories than try cash envelopes.

I appreciate your videos and am an avid listener. However, everyone isn’t stupid. Having a 4 month old daughter needing two open heart surgeries that was supposed to be an in and out of the hospital in a week ending up being almost a year due to complications and my baby dying and being brought back to life, and subsequently ending up with over $3 million in medical bill debt despite having insurance, is not about being stupid. Yes there are people who make stupid decisions with their money but some get caught up in situations such as surgeries, cancer, etc that end up with a lot of medical debt. They are not stupid sir.
@stephaniejane306
@stephaniejane306 5 лет назад
I think you have misunderstood. What you are talking about is unavoidable circumstances that pretty much everyone has to go into debt for. Your circumstance is a rarity or an outlier. Dave is talking about things that can be avoided. Credit card debt from over spending, car loans etc. I hope your daughter is doing well and becoming a healthy, beautiful child.

His daughter was raised on this stuff and is now a young woman with a family of her own who has to WORK for what she wants. Her father doesn't pay her bills, she and her husband do. You act as if she is fed from a silver spoon, when really, her true advantage in life was that her dad did this stuff and taught her not to. Why are you holding it against her that her parents passed their wisdom about finances on to their children?

Bob Marley you don't have to be in debt to give advice or still work the principles. I was never in debt but I was an extreme-consumer. I just kept buying and never budgeting, investing or saving. The Total Money Makeover have me so much knowledge which I have applied. Sometimes and just sometimes you don't have to go through bad experiences to learn
