I saw them perform several times in Santa Cruz in the '70s at the Catalyst Club. Stood five feet from Tony Rice watching him play. I was around 25 and never experienced anything so pure in my life. Now it is 2016, I am 64 years old and yesterday I bought a Santa Cruz Tony Rice Pro guitar. German spruce top and Brazilian rosewood back and sides. It is very light and rings forever. I am a very lucky man.

I saw the David Grisman Quintet in Boxeman Montana in 1980. The lineup was Grisman, Rob Wasserman, Mike Marshall, Darol Anger, and Mark OConnor on guitar. The most amazing music I have ever seen/heard in my life. And the ticket cost $5. :-)

David Grisman's music is as much fun to play, as it is to listen to. Pure innovative genius. And writes it from the Mandolin perspective. Met him once at Troy Music Hall. Forgot to breath while shaking his hand. Very star struck I guess. Whole band very nice. Especially Joe triple threat, Craven.

it really doesn't get much better than this when it comes to classic bluegrass. i've seen Grisman a few times with various groups including some quite intimate settings and they have never disappointed. always a bunch of amazing musicians.

David joined up with legendary jazz violin player Stéphanne Grappelli in the late 70s-early 80s that were sheer joy to listen do. They performed on night on the Tonight Show and you could tell that Johnny Carson was in awe of the performance. I believe it may be online.

I loved this group. I saw them live around 1977 or 78 at the University of Missouri - St. Louis, but Tony had just left and Mark O'Connor took over for him on the guitar (yes, he did and sounded great). Daryl Anger took over on fiddle. Great band!

Grisman's early music and bands like this one are still completely head and shoulders the best of the genre. He (they) invented it and no one else to follow has been as compelling. Sure there are many virtuosos in is wake (on all instruments), but they all know who the god of newgrass is. Taste matters more than chops (they all have both of course), and no one had Grisman's taste and suave, relaxed drive. Also his fluid use of odd and shifting meters - much imitated, never matched.

I think he is playing a Kentucky Dawg F-5 which is a copy of the Monteleone F-5 that was custom built for him in the late '70's early 80's. The black Monteleone is featured on the cover of the "Quintet '80" album... going by memory of a miss spent youth...

LP? well, if you can find the first DGQ record it's on that one. If you have the capability Dawg is download friendly, so a lot of his shows are available at various d/l sites, and the Quintet is still doing that tune. And really well, IMHO.
