Dawn Of The Dead paved the way for the mainstream celebration of zombies that we have today. Though Night Of The Living Dead may have put George Andrew Romero on the map, its sequel changed the course of history in the horror genre and cemented his creation of the zombie into the pop culture zeitgeist.
Like most movies, Dawn wasn't the smoothest transition from page to screen, with rewrites, funding, and the dreaded MPAA getting in the way. But while the zombie genre has raged on since Romero's initial Night Of The Living Dead, many people would agree that it doesn't get any better than his masterpiece Dawn Of The Dead. If you enjoy the Walking Dead, endless zombie shooter games, or novels on the subject, take a moment to raise a glass and say Thank You, George. Without him, none of them would exist. So let's head into the mall for our latest episode of WTF Happened to This Horror Movie.
WATCH OR OWN DAWN OF THE DEAD HERE! amzn.to/3xEoTWO
SERIES SYNOPSIS: Hollywood has had its fair share of historically troubled productions. Whether it was casting changes, actor deaths, fired directors, in-production rewrites, constant delays, budget cuts or studio edits, these films had every intention to be a blockbuster, but were beset with unforeseen disasters. Sometimes huge hits, sometimes box office bombs. Either way, we have to ask: WTF Happened To This Horror Movie?
This episode was Written by Bryan Wolford, Narrated by Jason Hewlett, Edited by Jamie Vasquez, Produced by Lance Vlcek, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.

I still remember in the late 90's I believe, buying this on VHS at a store in the Mall. The cashier asked me if I had saw it before, and I said, no just Night, and Day of the Dead. The Guy said: "Man, this is the best Zombie movie ever made". He wasn't wrong...

@SonOf McGringus Nah. I like the exploding head and the helicopter head slice was cool but Dawn feels too long, drags in places and blue zombies. That make up was atrocious. Day was tightly written, has fantastc pacing and the make up effects are still some of the best in film. I ain't had any desire to go back to Dawn since the 80s. I still revisit Day on the occassion. IMO... The only right opinion.;)

@Ding Zzz Thanks for your response Ding. I actually for some reason love talking about zombie flicks. I think some of the most entertaining and interesting stories sit in this sub genre. Obviously I was joking when I said my opinion is the best opinion. It is though.;) Day is now my second favourite ever Zombie piece of entertainment. As for Day I Iike the John and Bill Mcdermott characters, I’m glad Sarah Bowman survived (She certainly wasn’t lovable but she wasn’t a horrible character.) and of course Bub was the stand out. I don’t know about pleasant viewing but it was damn entertaining and very easy to watch. It certainly ain’t one and done. I love Goblins, such interesting sounds. As for social commentary, to certain degree we have embedded the messaging we want to see over time depending on where and when we have grown up, which is great. My favourite zombie entertainment is the Korean TV series, ‘Kingdom’, it’s wonderful in every way and has taken the top spot from Day for me. I also really like Return of the living dead, The Snyder Dawn (Except for the damn dog and the baby. Snyder sure knows how the make a pre credits scene.) A British miniseries by Charlie Brooker called ‘Dead Set’. Another Korean movie called ‘#Alive’. ‘The girl with all the gift’s. ‘Brain Dead’ which is just so much schlock fun. I also like a comic book by Garth Ennis that could be interpreted as zombie adjacent called ‘Crossed’.

@SonOf McGringus Thanks for your response Son of. I grew up in the UK in the 80s and a lot of films we recognise today as masterpieces were labelled ‘video nasties’ by the Mary Whitehouse brigade, including these 2 movies. I used to sell pirated videos. No kidding. Videos. I had half a dozen top loading video players working flat out. This was a time before what was called ‘sell through’ and it was all rentals. I had a special love for horror and I had a contact in ‘Forbidden Planet’ (A British comic book store) for these banned films and he had recorded a slow mo of the exploding head. Pretty cool. I did really like the film but the length, some of the pacing and the makeup and blood effects do take me out of what I’m watching. I believe I’ve even seen Romero himself say Day is his fave. As for the budget issues causing him to change the script many have said what you said, personally I’m kind of glad he didn’t. For a start the setting makes it timeless because it’s the end of the world so fashion and technology and everything has stopped changing. Romero has been known to make the bad film now and then and with more money we may not have got what turned out to be one of the greatest zombie/horror films of all time. My Dad and I went to see the 1970s Dawn of the Dead in a local movie theater when it came out. Dad got the biggest kick out of it, although it scared the crap out of me. It hit a little too close to home, as I was a teenage mall rat myself at the time. After the movie ended, we felt a sort of natural high, both of us animatedly chatting away together about the movie. Our conversation continued as we drove down the road in his F-150 Ford pickup truck to our local McDonald’s. The grotesque consumerism continued as we chowed down on Big Macs while discussing the gory highlights of the film. My father and I shared the same dark sense of humor 😏 Rest In Peace, Dad. One of the greatest, if not the greatest horror movie of all time. I know the makeup used hasn't aged well, and some of the scenes are a little clunky for lack of a better word. But the soundtrack and premise alone are so fantastic - the story is so unique as to elevate it to a true classic. I never even bothered with the 2004 remake. What's the point? It's like why watch the Robocop remake when the original was such a classic. And how can you top a classic?

Well due to its graphic content is one reason, but now that the walking dead has crossed that barrier, the other problem is the producer who owns the rights... RIchard P. Rubinstein. He has sole rights on what happens with the film, and he ran into some trouble a few years ago when he spent $6,000,000 to do the 3D conversion which went unreleased until last fall (2022). DUe to the cost he up the charge for distribution rights and every studio walked away from licensing it for another US home video release. Universal offered him an outright buy out of $20,000,000 and he turned it down requesting he receive $6,000,000 for a US theatrical release by Universal of the 3D version. They guffawed and walked away. DUring its release last year it barely made 1,000,000 due to being a limited event. No advertising of the release and his greed is what has doomed this title to sit OOP int he US Market. George and RIchard supposedly do not talk to each other since they split, and I do remember hearing at one point during the peak of the convention era RIchard tried to take 50% of all of ROmero's autograph revenue on material related to Dawn of the Dead. Like I said heard it, can't confirm it. When ROmero passed away in 2017 RIchard sent flowers but never attended the memorial. as of 2023, he has been in talks to have another remake done... but it is most likely going nowhere. But he has also said he is open to a direct sequel being made and he said he would want Zack Snyder to direct it.

I remember when Dawn was being released. There was little to no advertisement for the film. I remember seeing small posters that had been tacked up on telephone poles. That was it! The poster had the zombie artwork, title and that it was unrated or rated X.( Wish I had taken one of those posters for myself!!! )

If you mean the chopper scene where Fran kills herself, it was NEVER shot. They used the cast of Gaylen Ross for another scene on the film. They used the cast on the one zombie/person that Wooly blows their head up with the shotgun during the apartment raid in the beginning of the film.

@johnmarshall2439

@@dermagnus8482 To each their own. But Romero's zombies would pick up weapons and even have some cognitive ability. Not to mention had the ability to speed up themselves. They never ran. You can like or hate Snyder's film, it's your right to have an opinion and doesn't matter what I say or anyone else. I just think it's a silly argument to dismiss Snyder's version because the zombie's ran. When George's had them picking up rocks to break windows, guns to shoot people, ambushing like a Ninja at the last moment. Or like the bald Hindu guy( or whatever he was supposed to be) at the mall open the door that Steve was going to go in and go up several flights of stairs to stumble upon Gaylen Ross. Eventually having a commanding zombie given out orders and shooting a gun in Land of The Dead. Which came out after the Dawn remake.

Given the content of previous videos, most of them telling the woeful tales of sequels such as _Exorcist II_ and _Poltergeist III_ ... why was this labeled "WTF Happened"? This isn't a story of a film that wound up considered "bad" because producers pushed their way into production and ruined the final film.

The big takeaway for me here is that, in the 70’s, retailers only had a 3 week Christmas season. If they wanted to shoot a movie now and didn’t want to deal with the Christmas decorations they’d have to stop shooting in September and couldn’t resume until February.
