The concept of legacy sequels has become a prominent topic, generating both praise and criticism. The recent Halloween trilogy, for instance, has sparked divergent opinions, with some embracing it while others express disdain. Similarly, the latest Exorcist sequel faced challenges, falling short in both box office success and public reception. However, the trend of such sequels persists. The 2021 release of Candyman stands out as a noteworthy example that garnered positive attention. Despite some dissenting views, the film achieved a decent box office performance, received mostly favorable reviews, and left fans generally satisfied. Notably, Candyman introduced fresh perspectives while paying homage to the original, showcasing that the legacy sequel trend continues to evolve with varying degrees of success.

SERIES SYNOPSIS: Hollywood has had its fair share of historically troubled productions. Whether it was casting changes, actor deaths, fired directors, in-production rewrites, constant delays, budget cuts or studio edits, these films had every intention to be a blockbuster but were beset with unforeseen disasters. Sometimes huge hits, sometimes box office bombs. Either way, we have to ask: WTF Happened To This Horror Movie?

The original is horrifying and gorgeous. This one was super overrated and messy. It started well, but quickly devolved into a mess of hammy acting and awful CGI. It's cheesy and it retcons the backstory, making the concept of the Candyman himself less villainous and less scary.

The thing that’s great about the first film is that the kills are mainly there to be of use to the plot, it’s not for there to just be kills because it’s a horror movie. The kills are done by candyman as a way to prove his point and further torment Helen to show her that he needs to be believed in. Nowadays, if there’s a sequel, the kills are mandatory to one-up its predecessors but end up falling flat, because it’s just to satisfy people’s want of mindless violence. If that’s what people want, then it’s best to watch something like Friday the 13th, or, John Wick.

@bufferino7880
@bufferino7880 7 месяцев назад
The Candyman requel has so many problems. I *wanted* to like it. I went in with high hopes. The cinematography is beautiful. The baby Anthony twist was a great idea! But here’s the things that lost me: - The in-your-face social justice preaching. The original movie was about poverty and violence faced by black Americans. It commented on white academics treating impoverished black American communities as tourist destinations. It touched on generational trauma of racism. It was great. But first and foremost it was a slasher movie meant to scare you with messages embedded. The original story was about poor British people. They changed the location and demographics and incorporated more elements into it but there was a solid story as the foundation. The new movie started with a message and tried to build a story around that. Which did not work. - The characters were all so shallow. Here’s your gay character. Here’s your art critic character. They were just so paper thin it was painful to watch them on screen. - The length, pacing, and climax. It was too long, was so slow in parts, and at the end I felt like there was 20 minutes cut because it just ends abruptly without any feeling of resolution.
@somethingclever8916
@somethingclever8916 2 месяца назад
I agree. It needed to be scarier. The "sjw" worked but it needs to be scary and the story cant pause to explain itself. If I'm reading a book on the civil war I don't need it explained to me in fiction. It needs to be shown through the story if that is what the story is about

Its good but not great. From a few conversations I have had about the film, much of those talks about the very things discussed in this video. It mirrors the first film in a lot of ways which is good. Sprinkles the lore and legacy fine. I would have went in a completely different direction giving the candyman no lore at all and made it a shapless entity that latched onto the candyman movie to take form. It being a sort of urban legend works really well for a story like that. A New Nightmare did it, the THING, the ENTITY, Prince of Darkness, Possession all do this but candyman needed a more David Lynch take on that rather than Wes Craven. I would have done the same here. i would have taken Candyman out of the element, ignore most of the race and social justice elements and made it about existential horror over slasher meets possession story with a David Lynch tone and feel... I do not really like horror where EVERYTHING is explainable. Sometimes it is just a force of evil that one cannot fully stop but slow down... Existential horror for me doesn't have a happy ever after but rather I survived this encounter and if I have ever have the poor fortune of running into this THING again I will not be so fortunate...

What made the new Halloween trilogy good was that i didn't feel like I was being politically lectured by the cast. It was a horror trilogy. And it stuck with that choice. Even the comedic relief was welcome. But for the exorcist believer, candyman, and many others like the new scream, it feels as though they want me to support a very specific set of beliefs, and they're very eager to let me know that I'm hated if I don't. Right down to the interviews done with cast and crew. Halloween didn't try to reinvent horror into some kind of vector through which to express how oppressed you are, when you're literally making millions to make a movie that wouldn't break even at the box office.

Genuinely a very solid sequel to the original. I really enjoyed it. I find that the people who didn’t enjoy it are the same people who mistake the original for a basic slasher and don’t actually get the deeper plot/meaning behind it. Just because a film requires you to think a little and you’re too stupid to do so, doesn’t make it bad.

This was absolutely one of the WORST remakes in MANY years! And I'm someone who's NOT against remakes in general but this one seriously didnt set out to make a candyman movie but it set out to make a pro-black movie! Which would've been fine if that was what candyman was all about which it isn't! Many ignorant defenders claim that's what the original candyman was. YEAH RIGHT! Him being a slave of the white owners in his past was clearly just a backstory, nothing else. What he was really about was terrorizing a main character to keep his name/ haunting urban legend alive (including via the newborn baby and all tht) so that his presense lives on & is etched malevolently in the minds of people, etc. I mean that's not subjective at all, he clearly overtly states it in the original! "Be my victim". Now explain how does all that have anything to do with black man rights, anti-white man BS! In the early news, they claimed this was gonna be a sequel/ re-quel of some sort and I seriously cant see how because they changed certain aspects like the shady ol' apartment building initially controlled by dangerous black gangs (in real life) - they changed it to a 'loving' apartment for blacks who are terrorized by white cops! As I said, this stupid remake tried to use a horror franchise as a vehicle for black rights, kinda like how prey chose to use the Predator franchise as a silly feminist vehicle. Over and over it is said that the better movies are those that dont need to overstate its messages, in this case, race - bcoz the narrative should do that for you, if it's competent enough. And my holy fcuk, this "movie" irritatingly kept saying "white man this", "white man that" BS as they kept hitting you over the head with it and ramming it down your throat it was so godawfully irritating! I could go on and on but screw it!

FINALLY SOMEONE WHO GETS IT ! and understands the first movie so well. From the Candyman's perspective he needs the black community of Cabrini Greene to be constantly living in fear as this gives him power , he needs them to whisper his name in the classrooms and for the people to pass on the story and create the urban legend of him. From experience passing on stories of fear in many cultures was a very common way to keep children in line and even adults to a degree. Clive Barker used this so well in the first movie when Helen conducts interviews from individuals from Cabrini Greene you can feel the fear and disbelief at the same time. This whole black man good white man bad thing is just so laughable at this point and anyone with a brain knows it's just a way to sell oppression to black America. Cheers for your comment

I am a huge fan of Candyman & Candyman 2. Candyman 3 not so much but I have it on digital and will watch from time to time. I still don't know how I feel about this movie. I was so excited but when the credits rolled I just sat there. My wife loved it & she didn't like the original. She applauded...I looked and said "he's not supposed to be a hero babe". It makes sense though as far as the route Nia DeCosta took. IDK... something was off with me though. 🤷🏾‍♂️💯

A god awful forgettable movie ! just another woke movie that was boring as hell, stupid and killed the mystique of the Candyman, now its a beehive of Candy-Men🥁🥁🤣 This piece of garbage made me love and appreciate Clive Barkers original movie even more. Just because Jordan Peele's name is attached to a movie doesn't mean it's gonna be good. The funny thing is this movie gets sold as a bundle with the original movie on dvd/ bluray format I guess it's to make up for the poor box office numbers.

Respectfully disagree with the narrator of this video. The "Candyman" Legacy sequel is not a good movie at all. Way too didactic and not enough subtlety. And, as others have mentioned across various platforms, it's not scary at all. This film is the result of the peculiar precedent that was set by Jordan Peele. Ever since the release of "Get Out" in 2017, Hollywood has been in a mad dash to capitalize on that film's success, putting out these so-called socially relevant horror movies that focus more on preaching a message than actually trying to scare and thus entertain the audience. In the wake of "Get Out" we've had films and television shows like "Antebellum", "Master", "Lovecraft County", "Men", "Us", and most recently "The Blackening." And of course, "Candyman (2021)." Those aforementioned titles are all high-concept ideas with a substantial amount of money behind them yet none of them left an impression on the public. Meanwhile, low-budget flicks like "Terrifier 1 and 2", "X", "Pearl", and "Talk To Me" seem to resonate much more with the movie-going public. Not only do these films click with the audience, but all of them are getting sequels. In my humble opinion, "Candyman (2021) gets a lot of undeserved adoration because it happened to come out in the aftermath of the tragic George Floyd situation and also because Peele's name was attached to it. While the acting is good as well as the cinematography, the story doesn't have a sense of dread, nor is the film atmospheric which is important for a horror movie. Furthermore, none of the kills are interesting or fun, you are practically beaten over the head with the concept of racial injustice, and the movie shifts its focus from the main character played by Yaya Abdul Mateen II to his girlfriend played by Teyonah Parris in the final act. Peele and DaCosta are part of the reason this film doesn't work for me. I know Jordan Peele has been all the rage since "Get Out" hit the theaters back in 2017 and I don't begrudge anyone who likes his films, but to me and I don't think I'm alone in this regard, he's overrated. Hollywood has put Jordan Peele on this pedestal as some great horror auteur in the same vein as Wes Craven or John Carpenter, yet none of his films (so far), not even "Get Out" comes close to what those two legends have done. While I respect that "Get Out" is an original idea and it's a fun thriller, but like "Candyman (2021)", it's not scary at all. Furthermore, all of Peele's subsequent projects have not impressed me. Neither "Us" nor "Nope" were scary nor impressive in any other aspect. And is anyone even talking about Jordan Peele's "Twilight Zone?" If there is any director who is making cool and interesting horror films today, it's Ti West. Jordan Peele is very successful and I wish him continued success in his future endeavors, but I haven't been impressed by anything he's done, so far. I feel the same way about Nia DaCosta, I wish her all the best, but she's done nothing in my opinion that is good. And when I look at her resume, I have to wonder if she was given too much too soon. Nia DaCosta had only directed two short films and one low-budget film "Little Woods" with Tessa Thompson and Lance Reddick before being given these big studio films like "Candyman" and now "The Marvels." While I have no doubt DaCosta is talented, if I were in charge of Universal and Disney, I would be very hesitant to put someone who's not too far out of film school in charge of a major studio film. This seems to have been the same situation with Josh Trank a few years back when he was put in charge of the Fantastic Four reboot. A young, up-and-coming talent like DaCosta should at first be given low to medium-budgeted films before being given something bigger. Sometimes, I wonder if Nia DaCosta is just a diversity hire so Hollywood can pat itself on the back and say "See, we're making progress." Still, I wish her all the best, just not a fan of her movies, so far.

Guess what…it’s not 1991-1992 anymore. A continuation of the original Candyman film will not be as romanticized, mysterious and “scary” in a gentrified Chicago circa 2020 to desensitized fans expecting a straight-up slasher. The original was driven through the pov of a ‘90’s white woman, who is given second-hand knowledge of the legend. This is a fact some people lazily gloss over and just call this sequel “woke” (whatever that means this week) 😂.

I love how 99% of the comments are about how much us fans love the first movie so much and each of us have been sharing our reasons on why we love the first film, with comparisons to why we dislike this piece of garbage film with it's woke political agenda. This movie was not made with love and it was just used as a political platform and a big F- U to the fans, this is even more clear with the recent news articles on Nia DaCosta's behaviour during the making of The Marvels and her blaming toxic white males, racism , homophobia etc on the movie being a major flop for Marvel studios. The writing was on the wall from the beginning with this film from DaCosta and since The Marvels was a huge failure we won't be hearing much from this director in the future, I guess the new thing for the movie industry is if you want your career to die be sure to push a woke political message , ignore the original movies, blame your fans for your failures and go work for Disney. I guess to summarize what us fans think of this movie I'll quote Sidney Prescott from Scream 4 " You forgot the first rule of remakes, Jill. Don't f**k with the original! "
