Awesome video!! I finally understand what was going on in my system. Every time I told my DR my sugar is always high in the morning he looked at me like I was crazy. And when do we get our blood tests?!?!?... in the morning. Even when I got my A1C1 down to a normal level, he wanted to put me back on metformin because of this spike in the morning. I refused to take it again, as it gave me diaharea and made my blood sugar swing to the point of almost passing out. I have gotten healthy doing a Carnivorish/keto diet and have lost 30+ lbs and feel sooo much better. Of course he wants me on statins now cuz of my higher LDL do to a healthy diet but not gonna happen. Scary when the patients are now more educated than the majority of the DR's that are just taught to shell out pharmaceuticals!!

kind of a newbie here, two weeks ago went to the Dr. for something completely different and turns out, my glucose was 486, triglycerides of 1095, doctor said he had never seen it that high, did a1c and came back 13.4. 190lbs, 5'10, i couldn't believe it, basically prescribed insulin, metformin and some cholesterol drug and said I'm sorry, that was it ! I began researching and immediately started low carb diet (I was a heavy snacker before). Did the insulin for like two days, but quickly learned why would I put more insulin in my body, so stopped it. stopped the metformin too and never took the cholesterol meds. Currently in a 72 hour fast that ends tonight at 8pm, but might go longer, maybe even 5 days. last nights glucose was 109, experience exactly what he describes, but its steady, this morning waking up around 130 (Dexcom G7 reading) and slowly dropping throughout the day. did bloodwork yesterday and in about two weeks, triglycerides already down to 645, so going in the right direction. medical industry is a joke, just gave me meds and said good luck ! i refuse to take medicine. Thanks for the video and explanation !

I went on keto for 6 months and my A1C went to 5.4. Started carnivore to try to lower my morning blood sugar which was 120 to 140. I just couldn't get it down. I prayed and prayed for answers and was led to go on a 72 hour fast. It was not difficult as I was omad anyway. I never felt better. So much energy. At the end of my fast my sugar was 75 to 83 in the mornings. Now I am eating twice a day and my sugar never goes over 120 and that's one hour after eating but by 2 hours after eating it's 83. I fast 18 hours a day, I walk 30 to 90 minutes a day, eat carnivore meals twice a day, Am now fat adapted. My body is changing. I have decided to fast at least 72 hours twice a year after finding out all the benefits.

Hi I am going through the same thing. So you saying that after fasting for 72 hours your high morning sugars "fixed"? Mine even goes down to 80 two hours after eating, but I just cant get them below 120-140 in the mornings, as soon as I eat (at noon), they magically go down.

I am a thin Type 2 and have been for 31 years. The visceral fat is in my belly. I'm sure that's related to my diabetes. However, this fasting idea concerns me. If I lose any more weight, I'll be really underweight. Can you address this, Dr. Ekberg? Some of us cannot afford to eat less. Thanks.

@@r0berto5060 If you keep doing IF you should see your blood glucose go down in a few weeks. Same here, my blood glucose was high in the morning, around 118, I did the IF and now my blood glucose is around the 90s. I do IF 20-4 everyday, sometimes I will do 36 hours. The 36 hours helped the most for sure.

I have dealt with Dawn phenomenon as long as I can remember. One year ago my fasting blood glucose was 320 with metformin and victoza injections. I quit my meds and went 15 gram total Keto and within 5 months I had lost 60 lb and got rid of my fatty liver but my morning blood sugar levels were still between 120-135. At the 6th month I went carnivore and now 7 months later my dawn phenomenon has recently finally gone away and my morning blood glucose is at 100 or under. When I first transitioned from keto to carnivore my blood glucose averaged five to 10 points higher but now they are normal with Dawn phenomenon finally subsiding. My way of eating is either OMAD or 2MAD at night time after working out with some weights. I believe the working out helps burn off some of the carbs. I also quit drinking beer and occasionally drink vodka or dry gin with a squeeze of lime and water. This actually drops my blood sugar after drinking it.
@Powerman80923
@Powerman80923 5 лет назад
Wow, what a change! What did your A1C used to be? The reason why your blood sugar drops temporarily when you drink alcohol is that the body sees it as a poison that it has to get rid of and process immediately. It's not helping your liver, even in small quantities. I know it seems like it is helping, but it is not. Exercising to get glycogen moving in and out of muscles on a regular basis is definitely the right thing to do (as long as your doctor agrees that there are no other risks). When it mostly goes into inactive muscles, problems eventually begin to appear. Are you currently in a calorie deficit on average?

@@Powerman80923 the last I had it checked it was 8.6, but that was way before my fasting levels crept over the 300 mark. When it was over the 300 mark my uneducated guess is that my A1C was over 10 but I didn't want to go back to the doctor to find out. That's when I decided to make a change in my lifestyle. The last test I had several months ago it was at 5.4 but then my fasting levels were around 115-125. Now with the dawn phenomenon gone and morning levels lower hopefully I may be in the high 4's. The alcohol thing is not something I do to lower my blood sugar, just an observation since switching away from beer. Yesterday I ate 3 eggs, 4oz picana and 3lb 73% ground beef with a sprinkle(1/2teaspoon) of hijiki seaweed. I haven't counted the calories and just eat till I'm full. During the week when I'm a little bit less active I usually eat about 2 1/2 lb of beef, sometimes with some hard cheese on it. I lost 60 lbs on keto but since being carnivore I have not lost any weight, but I am not getting fatter. My waist size is the same if not slightly smaller but my arms and shoulders are getting bigger.

This was an exceptionally clear explanation. I have a background in science and mathematics, but not medicine. Looking at the actual amounts of glucose being processed was exceptionally clear and instructive for me. I've lost about 50 lbs over 9 months, I'm doing some IF, blood numbers are good, but I pay more attention to blood ketone level than to blood glucose. My biggest bit of evidence that I'm on the right track is that I just don't get hungry, don't snack, I general skip breakfast. Actually I love breakfast, but I don't have it until early afternoon or maybe evening. Thanks very much for your videos.

I'm a 66 year old ectomorph who has a BMI of 21 basically my entire life and have never been overweight. Ever. But I recently started a keto diet and after a month measured my fasting insulin and it was 9.4. Since I had been eating a SAD for decades my fasting glucose is typically around 110, so my homa-ir was about 2.3, insulin resistant. 😢 This video has helped me understand that I am on the right track but it's going to take a while to get insulin sensitivity. Thanks for being such a great teacher. 😊

This dawn effect concept really makes sense after all. I've been doing keto/omad for a long time , and i was pretty confident that my fasting blood glucose won't exceed 85mg/dl. So, i decided to give a try one time in the morning, and i was disappointed when the reading reached 100-ish which falls under 'prediabetes' according to web-med. Then, i measured again in the afternoon (also fasted , just water/black coffee/green tea), and it turned out to be 82mg/dl. Definitely it was weird, but it got all cleared up after you explained the science behind this phenomenom. Thanks!

I am so glad that I found your channel. I have been diabetic for 18 years and have tried to control it without medicines. In the past few years I have had morning blood sugar levels of 300-330. Since trying your suggestions on keto diet the past 3 weeks, I have stopped taking my herbs to lower my blood sugar, I fast as long as I can in the morning, eat very low carb and have seen my numbers drop to below 250! Thank you so much for the advise you are giving.

This is one of your best videos ever. Thanks! Having been keto for two years, I almost feel like not measuring my blood sugar any more, because it bounces all over, and is ridiculously high in the morning and even after exercise (except low-intensity cardio, when it's "normal.") I've also heard it called glucose-sparing, because apparently most of our body is using ketones when we're fully fat adapted. It even looks more alarming, because my ketones rarely go over 1.0 unless I fast more than a day.

Hi Dr.Ekberg I am an arden follower of your videos. I am a type 2 diabetic, been on insulin for 20 years. Been on short and long acting mixtard insulin. I take 24 units in the morning and 20 units at night. Since following your videos, my blood sugar has been stable with BSL at 6-8 mmol and about 5-6 mmol fasting. I tired Intermittent fasting with OMAD. My last meal on the previous night is at 21 hours with a piece of roasted lamb, mixed veggies, half an avocado with a few macadamia nuts. Next morning BSL measured 6.6 mmol. Had a bullet coffee. At about 14 hours, BSL measured 7.4 mmol. Had an avocado and a bullet coffee. Pre dinner BSL at 1900 hours 7.2 mmol. Insulin taken was 9 units. Dinner consisted of lamb roasted, mung beans with coconut, ghee, mixed veggies & macadamia nuts. 2 hours PP glucose reading was 8.4 mmol. Fasting next morning at 8AM, BSL reading 8.0 mmol. Why is blood sugar persisting to be high even though I had the OMAD diet and took 9 units of insulin. Was the insulin taken insufficient or is my body getting adjusted to the reversal of insulin resistance.

Thank you so much. My morning fasting glucose is 118 and I thought something wrong with me. I do IF for about 16 hours a day and my after meal glucose is around 100. Now I know my body is doing OK with dawn effects of hormone and my body do not need much of insulin produced for additional 20 mg of my glucose increase in the morning.
@ineedhoez
@ineedhoez 4 года назад
This also explains why if you do the Dr. Kraft insulin assay test with your glucose tolerance test, you can come back with results that look like you have insufficient insulin, in response to a meal. Your body is just on chill mode because it's down-regulated its insulin response because it doesn't need to produce high amounts. This makes so much sense.

I eat a high fat meal, low-carb and wash it down with half cup mixed frozen berries, 1-2 cups kale, 1 avocado, nutritional yeast, and a teaspoon of Moringa that I blend with water in a blender. I thought everything was good until I bought a glucose tester. I tested my blood sugar upon waking and it was 125 and the next reading after stressing out was 135. I was about to buy Juman seed powder as well as come off of IF until seeing this video. I knew I was doing the diet right because I am in ketosis much of the day but very thankful to see this video. I'm newly diagnosed with Diabetes & the Dr of course just wrote a prescription for metformin without looking up from his laptop. I was a distance runner but unfortunately in oast 2 years I've had mental health issues & not felt like running 5 Mike's every day. I was diagnosed pre-diabetes 7 years ago but kept the numbers down by running so much...well it certainly helped & I weighed 138 lbs ( I'm 5 foot 7 ) ... now I'm 168 pounds & am diabetic. I have watched so many diabetic videos my head is spinning but this guy isn't trying to sell me something which is refreshing. I've not started the metformin & after speaking with my Swedish Dr friend I'm determined to TRY to do as I did before and use exercise and diet to get my numbers down. My morning glucose reading is around 7.3 MMOL ( UK numbers ) so that's like 130 USA numbers? So it's high ...but during the day my numbers are between 5.4 & 6.8 So after watching this video I'm a little less depressed about my situation. Thanks to this Dr for showing us the truth.
