Also, RIP John Hurt. He genuinely wanted to be the Doctor and was elated when Steven Moffat told him that he's not just the War Doctor, but an official Doctor. As sad as it was that Christopher Eccleston didn't come in for the 50th, I think it turned out for the better both in terms of the script and the final product that Steven Moffat then had to invent the War Doctor and thus bring in John Hurt.

John Hurt was great as the Doctor, but some scenes of the episode would be tremendously more epic if it was Nine instead of him, like the scene with the three Doctors breaking themselves out of the painting or them deciding not to destroy Gallifrey. Nine would feel completely differently because we would already know him, we would associate the whole of Series 1 with him. The Day of the Doctor would become a new variation of Three Doctors, and it would feel... fantastic!

I had the opportunity to watch this in the cinema in London when it premiered - The folks in the theater who had been following the 4th doctor's adventures in the Big Finish audios collectively gasped when they heard Tom's voice, and they and the rest of the audience cheered when they saw his face! A London newspaper critic watched it home, and said that he was glad he wasn't in the theater because he was screaming - the critics always get an advance copy of the program, but they had left out Tom's appearance to keep the secret safe! The fact that this was Tom's first appearanc in Who in 50+ years made it extra special. Also, his doctor was known for word plays, and he was able to get on in here - "Who knows, who nose?

6:55 The length of the Time War is relative, depending on where you are located within it. For example by Gallifreyan reckoning it went on for 500 years, however in other locations the War became infinite, endlessly repeating over and over again due to the looping and twisting nature of the paradoxes created (re-writing history, deleting persons/armies/civilizations from ever existing, stealing fleets from the future to fight battles in the past/present, etc...).

My one disappointment in this episode, was that the time war was shown as a conventional war. I’d have liked to have seen hints of temporal weapons, such as a young adult suddenly either a baby or a skeleton. But I also understand the 50th has to keep the child watching in mind, and that might be too much.
@chazo1367
@chazo1367 11 месяцев назад
@@CrankyGrandma I think the idea of this episode is that it's the Last Day, there are no more temporal weapons in use because they've been used so much to the point that it was causing problems for everyone, including the Daleks and Timelords and they weren't doing anything to turn the tide of battle, they became pointless because both sides probably had their ways to fight back at this stage. This is also the big last siege, the Timelords were pushed back to their home and losing the war, all the Omega weapons were even useless and used against the Daleks to no effect except for the Moment itself. At this point I think if it weren't for the Doctors, then the Daleks win, because they simply had the ultimate upper hand and managed to draw out such a siege on a whole planet.

About Eccleston, many people think he disregards the time he was 9th and the fandom, but he actually said he loved it. The series consists of 4 box sets/anthologies of 3 hour long episodes/stories each: Only the Monstrous (2015), Infernal Devices (2016), Agents of Chaos (2016) and Casualties of War (2017). The final set was released posthumously the month following John's death. Additionally as a companion to this a new series featuring Paul McGann as the 8th Doctor was commissioned with the first 4 episode set released in October 2017 and the remaining 3 sets of 4 episodes expected in July 2018, 2019 and 2020.

One thing I’m really disappointed with is how they showed the “time war” being fought with guns and explosions. A time war should be about re-writing history. The Faction Paradox books and audios did a great job with this. They describe “The Great War” as a battle over causality itself. There are planets whose history became so convoluted that no one could approach them anymore without being scattered and temporally wrenched apart. There are references to Faction Paradox throughout 11’s run. They were originally in some of the eighth Doctor novels and were spun off from them.

Tom Baker didn't return for the 20th anniversary special (The Five Doctors), but did eventually return for the 50th. Maybe we'll see Chris Eccleston in the 75th anniversary special? And now that you've seen the 50th, it really is time to watch The Five (ish) Doctors Reboot!

ChrisInScotland I'm sure that might have been the case, but the idea was always to have the 3 modern Doctors playing off of each other until Chris backed out.

@ChrisInScotland 6 лет назад
Matthew Williams To quote Moffat “ I knew that Chris was almost certainly going to say no. I met him a couple of times and he was absolutely lovely...And I three-quarters talked him into it. We had to work out what else to do. At that point neither David nor Matt were under contract either. I had Jenna. And I did come up with a plotline that was just Clara and The War Doctor. We’re weeks from filming. I haven’t written a script and don’t even know if anyone who has ever played the Doctor is going to be in it.”
@ChrisInScotland

Matthew Williams I think the idea may have briefly or originally to have all three but that never made it past the “in Moffatt head”phase and Eccleston never backed out like people think...he was never signed on.

ChrisInScotland I've reloaded the page since I finished watching and have read you lighting up everybody that said anything about Chris' non-participation. It's okay. There's a difference between intention and diplomacy. Chris has FAMOUSLY said that he wanted to do the one year and that's it. We can't know exactly Moffat's process in writing, but it's pretty clear even from the tidbits you've been using as refutation, that he wanted Chris involved. So Chris was offered the opportunity to participate and he said no. Let's just agree on that and move on. Further replies on this thread will be met as trolling and subsequently ignored.

Loved the reaction, I love how you had no clue what was happening and that you didn’t even seem to know David and Billie were in it and thought Matt was regenerating. Brilliant episode, I watched it for the first time in the theatre and was so good. Watched it a few times since and love it more every time. There was so much hype, at least here in the uk with crowds going to watch the yard is helicopter scene and it was fantastic. So good. John hurt was fantastic and, even with his huge iconic career, he always said he was so proud to have played the Doctor.

So many reasons I've been long waiting for this reaction. 1. Your past reactions to the Doctor being such a pacifist (which he became even more vehemently so than he was before the war, which was Classic Who). I think it's really only after reaching this point in the show that it drives home that the Doctor's aversion to both guns, violence, war (and by some association, soldiers) is largely self-loathing. 2. There're callbacks to the ethical quandaries he faced such as in The Waters of Mars or in The God Complex where he found the hotel room with his greatest fear. I'm certain his greatest fear is himself, that he is or could readily be the most terrifying monster of all. 3. The cantankerousness between the Doctor's incarnations meeting each other and disliking each other's quirks and personalities is metaphorical for his self-loathing (or anyone faced with the aspects of themselves, past or current, they don't like and wish they didn't have). 4. I think the reason I love the 50th special so much is because while the entire series is always about the Doctor saving others (or when his companions save him), this is the story where he saves himself. Of course, as usual, his companion was there at the most critical moment to say the right thing. 5. As someone who watched Four on tv (he was the first incarnation most of us in the US saw when the show was brought here), yeah I mentally fangasmed at hearing his unmistakable voice, as did half the theater. (I also highly recommend watching his more noteworthy Classic era serials. Every Doctor has fans for whom that actor was "their" Doctor, but Tom Baker held the role for 7 years and for so many his performance and characterization was iconically *the* Doctor. Even among Classic Who stories, his stories are classic. Love for Sarah Jane came largely from her time with Four too.) 6. Re: Eleven being "The Man Who Forgets", that does characterize his portrayal of the Doctor so well. Matt Smith was the youngest actor ever cast to play the Doctor (beating out Peter Davison), and Eleven can be interpreted as the Old Man running from himself and his past, his youthful external appearance and more child-like personality as a form of denial and avoidance, increasing from Nine to Ten to Eleven. 7. I think when you go back and rewatch earlier seasons now, it contextualizes what Nine's state of mind would have been when he returned to Earth after the end of the Time War, and thus why Rose is supposed to be uniquely special among the Doctor's companions. Also, someone blanked out the opening credits to preserve the surprise of who would be appearing in the 50th? Haha, rather brilliant..! :)

I remember watching this so well. I was literally shaking when all the Tardises showed up and I realized what they were doing and you could hear all the doctors. It was the most amazing experience I ever had watching a fictional television show. Just phenomenal. And Steven Moffat ist an absolute genius. How he managed to pull this off as a writer, I'm flabbergasted every time. The complexity of the story but still not too complex so even a non-fan can enjoy it. (I've heard from many people who watched this in the cinema bc their fan friend dragged them there and they became fans through this episode.) The way Steven put so many nods to the past in, so many inside jokes and references etc and yet it never feels as if it's hammed in or slowing down the story or that it becomes a nostalgia fest. The fact that he basically rewrote the doctor's history with the time war without taking away the emotion and pain and tragedy of the previous seasons. I'm just floored every time at that man's writing talent. Anyway, great reaction. I love watching your DW reaction videos, it makes me rediscover those stories all over again.

"Day of the Doctor" is THE definitive HUGE Anniversary special for any tv series. It's how it should be done. It's a real shame STAR TREK for it's 50th year didn't follow WHO' FANTASTIC example and do something like the 50th Year that Dotctor Who Had. Every month in 2013, there was a something cool about Doctor Who (The Twelve Revisiteds specials, BF did a special 50th anniversary Audios adventure, Books, apps, "The Five-ish Doctors" special, everything) leading up to the "Day Of the Doctor" "The DOTD" was even the big screen in theaters all at the same time all around the world at the same time it was on TV. It was the first time Doctor Who was properly on The Big screen..in 3D Even, and since then, they have done other WHO events on the Big screen with Rise of the Cybermen/Age of Steel, Dark Water/Death in Heaven, and even The Five Doctors was Riff-Riftraxed. Trek had one Documentary on the History channel that to me felt rushed...THAT WAS IT! No other Specials..no big promo..no big nothing. Yeah, There was Star Trek Beyond..but it wasnt as big as The 50th anniversary special like Day of the Doctor was for WHO.

Apparently, McGann was not thought to be a big enough draw for overseas sales (which don't rely to any significant degree on 'old' Who fans) hence the casting of indubitable star John Hurt. IT'S HERE!!! Jess, what an incredible journey you've gone on, and that you've let us be a part of. I have to say, Doctor Who December has so much reminded me of a tradition we have with Christmas calendars, where every day leading up to Christmas you'd get these small presents or some little trinket, and it was so much fun. This series has really felt like that, I've enjoyed it all a great deal. (And in Sweden, we celebrate Christmas on the 24th, and I just managed to get this done before all the relatives arrived, so, YAY!) This special... I watched it in the cinema, the day after it aired, and it was such an amazing experience. I cried, laughed and gasped out loud, at the edge of my seat the entire time. I feel like you might have had a somewhat similar experience with that at least. And yeah, there are so many easter eggs. The more I watch of Classic Who, the more I discover. I think it's a brilliant episode in both paying homage to Classic Who and New Who as well as opening up the universe for new possibilities in the future. It's beautiful and funny, it takes itself seriously when it needs to, and not seriously at all when it can. I love it. It's so hopeful, and I love when Doctor Who manages to pull that off. I have to say, I did enjoy them bringing back Billie Piper, and for me, it really felt like she was a different character in this. I know Moffat wanted her in there to pay homage to her because she was the companion that brought back the show, but I really like the Moment as a character. And I feel like she's very different from Rose here. Also, Billie Piper has developed into such an amazing actress, and it's a lot of fun that she gets to show that off. I was impressed that David Tennant being in this had managed to be kept secret from you - but what a great reaction that produced! Same goes for so many moments in this - all the Doctors, "No, Sir, all thirteen!", John Hurt being amazing, the fez, the curator! Even though you don't have much experience with Tom Baker, it says a lot that his appearance still can cause an emotional response. He's not been the most... active when it comes to participating in Doctor Who anniversaries, so to say, and I'm so glad he was a part of this. I could talk about this special all day, but I won't because it's Christmas and I have presents to give away and to open and people to meet. But Jess, you really made my entire December a lot brighter with this, and I teared up along with you. Looking forward to see what more you have to show us, and to the rest of Doctor Who December, though I'm sad it's coming to an end. What a blast it's been though! MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY DAY OF THE DOCTOR!

[gasp] It's posted early! Yes! I'm dropping everything and watching this right now. Edit: Great reaction. I laughed so hard at the end when you said "they showed Twelve ... which makes me nervous because that means at this point, he was cast". :D I do sometimes wonder how this episode would've been if Chris came back for it. I think a lot of the banter towards Ten and Eleven would remain the same ("am I having a midlife crisis!?" for example) but I'm interested in how it would be written because they couldn't do the whole story about The War Doctor being forgotten about. Also, I like that it was Bad Wolf and not Rose. That made it better.

It's rumoured that now that the old 2005 Who show runner, Russell T Davies is returning, that Tennant might return as well to be the new Doctor. Which would make sense by this episode, because of how Tom Baker says he'll "revisit some old favourites" in the future. I honestly hope it happens! I like Jodie and think she's exceptionally talented, she was just saddled with a horrible circumstance and writer/show runner.

I love that Sesska was taking the Tenth Doctor not liking the Eleventh Doctor's Tardis personally. The face at 23:48 is priceless!

I love love LOVE this episode and I LOVE your reaction. it felt like the best Christmas present to me! (and I didn't even get the others yet) This episode has everything in it that I love about that show. I cried and laughed and was completely blown away. Great story, great actors, great music! I so freaked out after the first time I watched it and had to call my friend and talk about it to calm down. I'm so glad I found your channel, it's amazing.

I watched this in the cinema here in Oz and I was one of MANY people who were whooping frequently. When Tom Baker introduced himself as the curator "You know I really think you might" the intake of breath in the cinema was giant... love this episode. Absolutely love love love it. Never mind the fan service (which is just outstanding and absolutely on point for an anniversary special) but the amazing dialogue, the incredible characterisations, the fantastic playfulness of the fez popping through, the glasses comparison, the unlocked door,... but then the cleverness of the zygon and human not knowing who each other are. Just such an amazing bit of TV. And... John Hurt in Doctor Who. Hello!?

This was AMAZING!!! Every single minute was a joy!! It's Christmas morning now and I've had to travel, but I needed to watch this before the house goes totally crazy! There were so many wonderful moments in this, but I always love that it was Matt who was the Doctor for the 50th. By this point he had long proved the doubters wrong and he deserved that scene at the end with the legend Tom Baker!! THANK YOU for an amazing reaction!! This whole month has been beyond special!! Happy Christmas!! Take care!!

It's never stated how long the war lasted. Centuries? The Zygons are a returning classic villain, although this is only their second appearance. The old guy is Tom Baker, the earliest surviving actor to play the Doctor. And of course you briefly see Peter Capaldi as the 12th Doctor. Also, you might find these two quotes from _The End of Time_ interesting: "The Doctor still possesses the moment and will use it to destroy daleks and time lords alike." "I saw the Phosphorous Carousel of the Great Magellan Gestadt, saved a planet from the Red Carnivorous Maw, named a galaxy Alison. Got married. That was a mistake. Good Queen Bess. And let me tell you, her nickname is no longer. Ahem. Anyway, what do you want? " [Bess meaning Elizabeth, and her nickname being the virgin queen]

The only thing they say about the time of the time war is that it literally stretched throughout the whole of time.

TheMoonRover To a non time traveler, the war lasted 400 years according to “The engines of War”.

The War has gone one ever since the Time lords sent the 4th Doctor to Skaro to try to stop the Dalek's Creation. So for Centuries! The Time Lords Fired the first shot in the time war!

Alexandra Shepiro The first shot of the time war was when 7 blew up Skaro in Remembrance of the Daleks, Genesis was after that but earlier in the Doctor’s timeline.

I'm glad you weren't spoiled on any part of the 50th anniversary special. I enjoyed this reaction very much. During it, I wondered whether there ever was an original timeline in which the Doctor destroyed Gallifrey. Maybe the alternate timeline produced in this episode was the original all along. It's just that the Doctor wasn't aware of the truth because of temporal issues.

Perfect Christmas Eve present! This was fabulous to relive those moments. The “All Thirteen” scene is still my ultimate favourite 🙊

Lovely reaction video. And as someone who started watching Doctor Who in the 1970's I couldn't begin to explain the pure joy I felt seeing Tom Baker in the show again (even in just a cameo role).

I keep coming back to this reaction, I have watched it so many times over the years and it's absolutely perfect. Watching you experience Day of the Doctor for the first time takes me right back to November 2013 - the excitement, the joy, the tears and the surprises. I can't take my eyes off of you during the whole section from when 10 and 11 arrive in the barn to the end credits, you express every emotion and I am on the roller-coaster with you. It is really emotional and cathartic for me and that's why I keep coming back. Thank you so much x
