Hey Cierra, would love to see a grocery shopping video! Curious to know how prices differ in your neck of the woods. Good luck with your seeds! When you get ready to plant, you can get your soil tested to see what fertilizer or nutrients you may need to add. Try a local co-op or agricultural department to find out where you can get testing done...hope that helps!

Some advice with planting the seeds in the trays: Water the bottom tray and let the water soak up bottom top rather than pouring the water on top of the tray

Watch the broccoli, don’t let it flower, you have to keep pinching that back, or at least I do. I also plant grape tomatoes because they always do well, even if the bush tomatoes don’t. Brussels sprouts take forever, start seeds very early. And I always get the little worms eating my cruciferous veggies like broccoli and cauliflower. I use equal parts cornstarch, cornflower and baking soda, mix enough water in so that it pours, water around each plant. The plants soak it up, doesn’t hurt you, but the worms won’t eat your plants. I live in Michigan, so you might not have these issues. Also, I use peat pots for seed starting because I have little luck in transplanting the seedlings and the peat pot is planted right in the ground, dissolves and provides nutrients. Tomatoes, suck alot of nutrients out of the soil, so plant them in different places each year and fertilize, amend your soil. I like to use composted manure for amending. Chicken poop is great fertilizer, just make sure any manure you use isn’t fresh, too high in nitrogen and will burn your plants….I once got a truckbed full of half composted cow manure from a farmer, I had HUGE beefsteak tomatoes, the plants were over four feet tall with stalks about two inches in diameter.

I think you are starting your seeds at about the right time. About asparagus: takes a couple years to get a bed going well enough to harvest and I’m not sure how you will do with starting your own plants, most people buy crowns. Our asparagus patch is about 30 years old, still produces! Little tip on your fried potatoes and onions (I’m a grandma) get your oil hot before putting in the potatoes, they soak up lots of oil when you start it cold. We vacation 2X’s a summer in N MN Voyageur’s so love that you are cooking fresh walleye. We use peanut or avocado oil so the fish get real crispy. I could almost taste it! You two are an amazing couple living your dream, so happy to see you thriving. You be blessed! 👍🐓🔪❄️

when starting seeds i put them on a soaked paper towel overnight and then plant them in a compostible pot, that way you can plant pot and all straight into the soil.

Compost pots do not break down in the cold soils of northern climes. Better to seed straight into the soil.

You might want to look into companion planting -- what to plant or not to plant next to other food plants. For instance, don't plant tomatoes with potatoes but do plant brussel sprouts with potatoes. Plant marigolds in with your beans and tomatoes to ward off hornworms and squash bugs. There are lots of lists and charts on line and the library probably has some good books, too.

I just watched a video on starting seeds. You might find it easier to pour potting mix into a bowl, add water, mix well then dip out the soaked soil with your hands, squeeze well, and fill the little seed cups with damp soil. Use the end of a pen or chopstick or something to make a couple of shallow holes in each cup and add a seed in each hole (two per cup in case one doesn’t germinate), then cover with a plastic dome or something to hold in moisture. Be sure to label the seeds so you don’t forget which is which. I saw this on 2 Acres Evolving (RU-vid) recently. He is in Oklahoma and is using a grow light - their planting season is earlier than ours here in MN.

Omg Skeeter was so freaking cute trying to get that bone! You could do a simple little hoop house for early/late gardening. I'm in NY so not quite as extreme as where you guys are but it really helps with getting an early start and would greatly extended your growing season. Plus it keeps the deer from eating everything.

Dunno if yall have them but Lowe's sells a generic High-Energy suet in a pack of 10 for $10. Usually one lasts us a few days to a week, and feeds most of the birds we have out here (so a pack is good for a month or more). Even with the crows getting at it they still last. Would love to see a shopping for the month/grocery vid just to see how your prices are generally too

When you are planting seed, you have to determine last frost in your area. Then look on your seed packet to find out when to plant your seeds. For example, if last frost is the end of April and the seed packet says 2 weeks before last freeze then plant your seeds two weeks before end of April.

Cierra back with more gardening tips. Last year I said you will learn as you grow. Mistakes and fails included. Now that you have your seed trays started. Get a plastic shelf and rig some grow lights above it. They are LED so pull less power. At night the cabin is still getting cold and the seedlings need to stay warm. This will get your plants up taller and ready for your short growing season. Find a near by farm (or Black Cow) and start composting manure and your food scraps and your wood ash. You will be amazed at the amount of food you can compost. I suggest you watch Fy Nyth and Living Simple Alaska. I have run greenhouses and a ranch for over 40 years. But, those two women teach me stuff I never thought about. You and Kyle are on a journey together. Living and learning-thanks for taking us along to see what desire and determination can achieve. I cant believe just a year ago I was telling you to talk more. Well, you are now.

A day on the life...of a good life! Here's to you guys and your garden! I have decades of organic garden experience. The most important thing is planting for your zone and rolling with the weather punches. One year to the next, some plants may thrive...or croak! Look for perennials that grow in your zone (for example raspberry, strawberry). Keep the dill well in a corner of the garden or it will spread like wildfire! 😎👍🇨🇦🌻🥔🍅🥕🥦oh, and if something grows well, save the seeds those plants may produce...though many are treated or irradiated etc so you have to repurchase...

MAYBE try one package of the beans. Beans are incredibly prolific. If you plant all 3 pkg you might need to get a pig to help out with the surplus. ALSO, check and see if they are bush beans or climbers. Bush are not as prolific but climbers you will need something for them to climb up.

Seed starting: Get die potting mix slightly moist, not wet, just damp moist 💦 before putting es into die trays. Fill die tray all die way evenly no loose oder empty spaces. Plant seeds ein 1/4 inch deep. Then mist der tray mit ein Sprayer bottle lightly damping die surface of der tray. Put dome on tray. Keep temperatures at 70 zu 75 degree. Pull die dome off the tray and fan the tray once a day or so to let in fresh air. Getting a small fluorescent lamp to hang over the tray will help immensely. Cute little candle table scene there!

If you didnt know already. There are certain flowers that benefit your garden. They draw the right bugs and repel the bad ones. So you don't have to share your garden with creepy crawly critters. I’d suggest y’all find a good RU-vid gardening channel from close to your area. Y’all are so far north that you will have a very short growing season. A greenhouse or high tunnel would help. Normally you pre-moisten seed starting mix prior to using. Then fill the cups, firm it down & add a little more to top off before adding the seeds. Once the seeds sprout they may need more light than they will get from the window so you may need a light to hang over them. It’ll seem like a lot to learn at first but it’ll quickly start making sense.
@julieb9215

The only large RU-vid gardening channel I’m familiar with that’s up north is MIgardener. He’s in Michigan but that’s still not as far north as y’all so still a different slightly warmer gardening zone.
