Day in the Life Researching Abroad | PhD Vlog
My second week in Paris at the archives was quite exhausting! I planned on filming more, but the first half of the video is mostly me showing off the yummy treats I got at the end of each day.
Hello friends! If you are new here, my name is Katherine and I am a second year PhD student studying history at the Ohio State University! I am a cultural historian of war, and my area of focus is France + Australia during WWI.

Hi Katherine, I'm a new subscriber and wanted to say thank you for posting these videos. I'm hoping to start my journey as a historian next year after moving to another country at 22 and watching your videos gives me the insight and motivation I need to work through the stuff I need to do before I'm eligible to study at uni in my new country. I'm looking forward to seeing more from your third PHD year! 😊🌻

Another great video and so relatable for us phd candidates in archival research! I admire your perseverance dealing with the frustrations of archives’ red tape! It’s so annoying and upsetting when archives have unnecessarily harsh restrictions that magically disappear when in the hands of a particular archivist or in the case of famous scholars. Not sure if this would help at all in your case, but one strategy that has helped me a bit is to remain standing at the archivist’s desk when viewing very restricted material. I told them I just needed to glance at the material to see if I needed to photograph it so I would stay at the desk and hand it right back. My physical presence made the archivists either work more quickly or allow me to get around some of the red tape. Not an elegant or certain strategy, but it worked for me a few times!

I am (glad?) that my archival woes are relatable! I will attempt to do that strategy the next time - currently the layout of this archive has made it to where my desk is right next to the archivist desk but even that isn't close enough!

So devastatingly sorry about the overturn of Roe v. Wade. I have been thinking a lot about women reproductive rights through history the last weeks to. It would be really interesting to hear your thoughts about it. Do you have any reading recommendations on womens historical fight for reproductive rights and/or fascism and reproductive rights? It makes your research even more important in these times. Good job with the archives!

Sorry for the late reply- I would start out with books by Leslie Reagan, Including Dangerous Pregnancies, and When Abortion was a Crime. I also recommend The Girls Who Went Away by Ann Fessler for those who think a catch all response to abortion should be adopting.

I actually really like Columbus! Totally different from New York so I couldn't compare the two though!
