Excellent video Jabbers. I know this method was not used a great deal in real life. but it was there for a reason, so I like to at least train using these systems in case one day they become useful. I watched the CVW-11 video on Computer IP bombing (I believe you know each other). In that video an airfield is used as the IP. But an airfield is a large area. So if you designate somewhere inside an area lets say 2 miles square. Then your offset is going to be somewhere in a 2 mile square. In the CVW-11 video this was not a problem. Because he dropped a GBU and a FAC was lasing the tgt. So he got a pin point hit. I did post a question asking how this might work with dumb bombs. You have very cleverly found a way. By using two people as the IP you effectively made an IP in an area of only a few feet. This makes the offset very precise. Well done! I am now trying to think of other ways this might be used. An IP should be an easily recognisable feature. But I suppose you could use the control tower of an airfield instead of just an airfield. the northern corner of a building. a cross roads etcetera. or even smoke from a FAC Thanks for the video. Keep up the good work.

I have a rather specific question after watching this. So I've been flying the A-10C a lot recently in support of the F-14s since not owning it myself, at least yet, and one of the biggest limitations so far is that without a human RIO in multiplayer the tomcats cannot use their LANTIRN pod to drop laser guided bombs. This can be overcome with buddy lasing, all well and good. However, one of the difficulties of this is talking the pilot on to a rough area for therm to designate to release their bomb at, at this gets even more difficult if there is a particularly low cloud deck and there are things like AAA threats in the area. One way to get around this that I use frequently when assisting Hornets with a buddy lase is to provide them a lat/long from my TGP to bomb so I can designate the bomb onto the target from there. So my question: Is there a way a Tomcat can designate a release point without *having* to visually acquire it first? Since precision accuracy is not a concern when laser guiding ordinance getting even remotely close would work.
@Jabbers
@Jabbers 5 лет назад
Computer Pilot mode, basically CCIP from really high in a general direction, it should hit if its "close enough" (then again, DCS bombs do funny things in the air... so who knows)
@Deltarious
@Deltarious 5 лет назад
@@Jabbers Thanks for the reply! I am familiar with that mode and have been having F-14s use it generally when conditions are favourable, but as I stated it still requires a fairly lengthy talk-on period to get them roughly in the right area, and it does not solve the problem of low cloud cover obscuring the target. It works well if the pilot already has a general idea of where a target location is and I have them up at 15k ft to drop and this works well enough if they can get within maybe half a mile of the target. The Initial Point mode you showed here required entering a lat/long as the IP before visual acquisition and this is why I asked as if there was some way to get the computer to accept a lat/long as a designated target with that level of precision it would solve the issue entirely. I suspect this is something of an edge case though so I wouldn't be surprised if there was no way to do this

Okay, now that I know how this works, I'm going to use it exactly never. Lol, it would be so much more useful to just be able to type in Lat-Long coordinates and have those designated for computer-target bombing instead. The 10nmi limitation for designating is pretty limiting for a plane that can toss a bomb well past the outer range of a Tor defense.

@@Jabbers Ouch! Well... That could be overcome by adding the B61 tactical nuke to the arsenal! Personnaly, I don't understand why coordinates are entered ; correct me if I'm wrong : the pilot fly somewhere (using his navigation skills and his faithful RIO), visually acquire a target and manually designates it, and then the offset is applied and the real target is set. Why don't we simply have to enter the offset ?
@jejelerider3278
@jejelerider3278 5 лет назад
Because when you fly hight and fast, and your troop are engaged on the field, they give you their location and where are the bad guys. Sometime you can't visually spot exactly where is the enemy and you don't whant to hurt your friends. The offset is nice to point your sensor directly on the target after spotting your "JTAC" location.

Cool video Jabbers, you delivered as promised. It is a shame this cannot be utilized in multiplayer however, without a human RIO. would be nice if you could get Jester to set the coordinates for the IP and Surface Target, and then just add one more command to select IP to TGT on the CAP, and he would input the relevant target data. Also you would only need one more cycle of the Computer/Pilot option within the A2G wheel, including an IP option. I would think it would be relatively easy to code a calculation between two waypoints in DCS on a command within the Jester A2G navigation menu, and if not, the ability to switch to the back seat to do this yourself should be an option in MP.

@eddievhfan1984
@eddievhfan1984 5 лет назад
First, a bit of background. The Tomcat's navigation system is pretty much only its INS (you do have TACAN and ILS/ACL, but they don't have that much of a tactical effect in this case), and this plane was made before GPS, so there's no way to correct for the INS drifting, save for either manually entering in a navigation update by the computer interface panel or-as this is most common and helpful-taking a RADAR fix on a waypoint using either the DDD in pulse search mode (aimed at the ground), or designating on the ground with the HUD cursor. If this isn't done, the INS can drift by at least one nautical mile in a hour; maybe more, if you've been maneuvering hard in a dogfight. When doing COMTR-IP mode bombing, you have to designate on the ground so the INS can update its own position, providing an accurate location of the offset target point, and subsequently providing an accurate bombing solution. CMPTR-TGT (CCRP) mode doesn't require a RADAR fix beforehand, but it certainly helps! (It's not necessary with the LANTIRN pod, since it has its own GPS reciever, and the F-14D models got GPS with their avionics upgrades.) If anyone's flown the Viggen in DCS before, it's very similar to taking RADAR/HUD fixes in that aircraft for navigation and bombing.

Hi Jabbers. Couple of things I noticed that are either errors, or not made clear. 1. when you entered the IP location you did not enter an elevation. I think this may be dependent on the situation. In the CVW-11 video, it was mentioned that you don't actually need the coordinates of the IP. If it is an easily recognisable feature. You could just fly to it and designate it visually. So I would imagine that when you designate, the Tomcat will update the IP altitude from the ground elevation information from the radar as in computer bombing. But it should be mentioned. Because if you don't know where the IP is and you are given coordinates to fly to the IP and for instance its on top of a mountain. The IP altitude will be important. 2. TGT offset altitude ? In your description you are a little vague on this. Your exact words are... "They are at 1100 and we are at 900. so that's a difference of 200ft". That's very vague and some people watching might take "they are" to be either the IP or the TGT. and "we are" might be mistaken for own aircraft. Just to be clear when entering the IP offset you enter Bearing range & the difference in feet + or - between the IP and the TGT. sorry for the long comment. and im not being critical, its a excellent video and a very imaginative use of the Computer IP bombing system.
