This is a video of the deHavilland beaver plane crash at Lake Hood in Anchorage AK, on June 7, 2009. My father and I were videotaping planes at Lake Hood taking off and landing when the wind kicked up and sent the Beaver taking off right at us.
The wing was less than 5 feet over our heads, and the radial engine was less than 8 feet to my left. No exaggeration!! The Slow motion at the end gives a little better look at how close it was. Everyone onboard was in pristine condition, 2 adults, 2 children and 2 dogs
For those wondering what camcorder I use it is a Canon VIXIA HF20

UNBELEIVABLE. Your one brave soul to stay in there that long. Great video, and notice that the plane didnt even touch that fence lol.

Now that we are getting recommended these random aviation videos, I am constantly seeing AFP in the comments of almost all of them. Edit: the plane did touch the fence, GroundPound69

What's more, he had plenty of lake left to get it up to a decent speed.

GREAT job filming this! Finally a youtube cameraman that knows HOW to film! Who doesnt stop filming the SECOND something happens. You were in grave personal danger, on your back, and you still turned the camera to catch the crash!! You deserve an award from youtube for this video. Best Stunt Cameraman

Aircraft appeared overloaded for takeoff distance. Float planes have to come up on "step" (like a boat comes up on plane) before you can safely lift. This pilot showed poor judgement in his takeoff attempt.

I've seen a lot of bad things happen in aviation, and you, sir, deserve an award for that video! Somehow, after nearly being killed, you still managed to get the majority of the crash on film!

It's amazing how clear of people the grass by the parking lot was that day. Usually, there are 20 or 30 people there filming takeoffs on the East-West Water Runway, right where the Beaver came down. Nice duck and roll of the cameraman too! You caught everything! Great job!

holy cow. that is amazing footage. i was like 'um that plane is coming right at you'. i don't know what the rotation speed is for a sea plane but it looked pretty slow...but it is coming straight at the camera so you can't tell. there was a crosswind though (per wind sock) but not terrible. Very happy no one was hurt... made me cringe when i read there were 2 kids onboard.

The airplane veered to the left toward a steep bank, and the pilot was unable to correct the deviation with the rudder. He did not feel that he could reduce power as he would slam into the bank. The airplane lifted off, but the float collided with the top of the bank. The airplane cart wheeled about 160 degrees to the left before coming to rest on its right side. It sustained substantial damage to the wings, fuselage, and floats.

@SectorNine50
@SectorNine50 14 лет назад
@Castorero1 If you look up the tail number, apparently this wreck was caused by a cross-wind that the pilot could not correct for with just rudder input. I don't really buy that, and I'm not sure why he wouldn't chop throttle when he went that far off "center-line" either. Big time pilot error if you ask me.

Do enlighten me as to what "rule of thumb" is used by bush pilots to see if they have enough room left to get airborne when taking off? What's the answer on this one?
@ethugp3pp3r

The pilot reported that there were no mechanical malfunctions or failures. Reported wind at the airport approximately 3 minutes after the accident was from 020 degrees magnetic at 3 knots, with no recorded gusts.

@Mellowbuzz1974 This started before the first bag or passenger was loaded. I don't have float plane rating, but flew out of the Pacific North West and Canada, lots of float planes. My friend has a C185 on floats. He didn't have the performance, did not use proper controls or exceeded the X-wind to track that desired takeoff water way. Many GA pilots fail to understand the rejected T/O and Ldg decision making or aren't displined enough to brief their self in a single pilot cockpit.

If you notice at the end of the vid he forgot to put the water rudders down. And when the cross wind hit him along with the left float dipping back in, he couldn't compensate.

I just have to tip my hat to the guy filming. I'm a pilot and photographer. It takes a lot of composure to avoid being hit then get the camera right back on subject. Nice work!! Glad everyone is ok. The best mistakes are the ones you walk away from and learn from.
