I don’t want to say I specialize in dead animals but this is my third dead Humpback whale and I have also covered two dead African penguins. This latest one came to me on the 30th of November 2017 when I read something on the Facebook page of The North Coast Courier. I actually just came back from my jog and I took a quick shower and then I had to move again. It was a hot day as well and I regretted the bare feet on the hot sand. Like a cat on a hot tin roof. I stayed close to the water’s edge where the sand is cool from the water.
Blythedale is not too far from here in Ballito and is the swimming beach associated with Stanger/Kwadukuza. About 25km north from here. I got there at about a quarter past 12 at noon and the tide was coming in already. Low tide was at about 7 in the morning. With a bit of luck the tide may just have taken the carcass in again which would have been preferable.
The video is self-explanatory as far as the whale is concerned and I have left a long section at the back where I posted most of the photos that I have taken of various parts. If you study the anatomy of whales, this may be helpful and you can pause on certain parts to get a better look. For instance the tail has been chopped by the harvesters and you can see some cross sections which may be of interest to you. Please feel free to comment with productive comments.
