I think we’re all looking to find something to laugh about in 2023. Maybe we should put pressure on the TV stations around the world to bring out the old videos like these, Golden Girls, Carole Burnett, Dave Allen, Shelley Berman, the movie Captain Newman MD. The list goes on. Some smart politician could run on the promise of bringing laughter back into our lives.

I went to an audition for Domino Louise's Las Vegas act and of course I really wasn't even interested I just went because I didn't have anything to do but I was a dancer but a ballet dancer The funny thing is that I ran into a addict station about 2 hours later and he was in a beat up car with a bunch of little kids So I said hello I was at your audition but I don't know why he was driving such an old car

It's astounding just how many jokes he had in his head. And to remember them all well enough to not repeat em across numerous performances or appearances like these here on johnny? Pretty incredible. Most comedians tell stories, often fairly lengthy. They set up a situation and derive humor out of the event(s). Bit different from Dangerfield's style where it is just nonstop endless jokes, bet if you counted em here it's be nearing 50 individual jokes here. And his delivery, perfection.

I think once you get him off stage he probably was a completely different person then the act you see here. I always thought him, Don Rickles, and Robin Williams just could not let go of the act even during interviews.

My favorite part of Johnny's repartee with his comedian guests was that he was ALWAYS feeding them banter (many times it was pre-planned) to help them transition from joke to joke. You can see in this video several times where Johnny echoes and adds "flavor" to Rodney's segue, enjoying every second of it because he knows Rodney is just setting up his next bit. And what makes Dom really crack up (when he bangs the ashtray on the table) is an absolutely naked segue, that just comes out of the blue. I love watching comedians crack other comedians up.

Because he had such a great sense of humor. He would get so hysterical laughing he couldn't talk and when he could he just fed it along making it worse. His laughter was infectious.

the throwaway joke rodney used to get out of that was better than any full leno set I've ever seen - like -i was young, i was 19, I used to do bits with the doll about the ways different people hit their kids - like a barker (smacksmacksmack) - that was brilliant, and this is a masterclass in how you do late night as a comedian in character but come across as genuine. the guy with the chin still doesn't understand this.

Absolutely, Johnny was the absolute king of late night hosts. I'm glad I was able to watch him into retirement. No one will ever likely be lucky to step into his shadow. And yeah, Rodney was great.

Lolz. George Carlin, Redd Foxx, and Richard Pryor were the most popular comedians in the '70s. Their material was pretty vulgar. It's always been there, just depends on what you are searching for.

That was the Greatness of Johnny, most acts today wouldn't think twice of sharing the spotlight and letting another Comedian shine. But in this skit you could see the two of them were like an act all by themselves and for that to work, one has to allow themselves to be the setup guy. Much respect to Johnny for doing that. He recognized Rodney's greatness and truly wanted him to succeed.

Even if maybe not humble enough, he was comfortable enough in his own skin to just sit back load the pitch machine and let Rodney hit home right after homerun. Quality like Mr. Carson’s is missing today

I completely agree. I grew up watching Johnny and at a very young age, would beg my mom to let me stay up. Johnny was so funny! Rodney, Dom and Buddy Hackett we're my favorites. I miss this show so much and the humor of those days. It was never the same after Johnny. Now, I catch some old shows on Roku before I turn out the light. Still makes me smile.

Me too. The younger generation that watch Jimmy Fallon have no idea. These late night shows were real with real feelings. Todays late night shows have a large element of faking it as you go along to keep people interested.
