The year 1974 when he was 57, was the last year when he still retained his full singing voice. It deteriorated from then on. Don't get me wrong, he was still entertaining, but his life-long smoking harmed his health including his singing voice. He still performed until 1991 when he was 74, four years prior to his death.
C.R .T Well, Dean did suffer from emphysema, which was caused by his lifetime of heavy smoking, as@Tim Carr said, and was later diagnosed with cancer. But most people who knew him at the time all seemed to agree that it was the tragic loss of Dean Paul that broke his heart and was a big factor in his final demise. In his last years you could see that though he tried hard the joy had gone from Deans life, and that wonderful twinkle in his eyes and his contagious cheeky grin just disappeared and he just seemed to become an old man very quickly. As Nancy Sinatra said in one interview; “It was easy to understand, but very hard to watch.”
