In a crazy-tight episode, Russell satirised the social media bubble. There was a dark twist at the end. No, not Susan Twist, though she was in it. Ed, struggling to comprehend he's seen two good Dr Who episodes in as many weeks, tries to digest it all like the big TV-consuming slug he is.
Warning: Contains footage of Timmy Mallet.

Shame Rooselle had to steal the plot of 'The Macra Terror' and cram it into the Black Mirror episode 'Nosedive' to elicit praise.

I think it COULD have been a satire…but it was so, SO poorly of lazily written and had no satisfying solution - it just sort of ended with, yet again, the Doctor not saving anything (so not being a hero for the 5th time in 5 episodes) and (sigh), yet again, crying. There WAS a racist aspect at the end - Lindy not wanting to be saved by the Doctor because, being black, he wasn’t “one of us” - that, admittedly, was more subtlety done than ideology in the Christmas specials and previous episodes but, honestly, that’s faint praise. Sadly, so far, the. Moffat episode has been, arguably, the best of 5 episodes. “Dot and Bubble” was one of the worst. And, for my money, Gatwa STILL doesn’t convince with any sense of authority, mystery or even menace.

It's not a satire and it's not lazy. It just wants you to think that that's what it is. Dot and Bubble is about a writing concept where there's a Hero, a Villain and a Victim. Over the course of the episode, they all change places. It's incredibly well done. We start with the Victim - Lindsay. She can't do anything for herself. She's a Victim. The Villains are the Slugs. Then there's the Heroes who want to rescue her - the Doctor and Ricky September. By the end of it, The Victim (Lindsay) becomes the Villain (because she's a racist.) The Villains at the start (the Slugs) become the heroes (and the episode never actually names them as the heroes but there's quite a lot of social media chatter that names the Slugs as the Heroes of the episode - which is what RTD wanted.) And so the Heroes at the start, the Doctor and Ricky September, become the Victims in the end. Ricky dies because of the explicit instruction of Lindsay and the Doctor dies because he's a White Saviour, and he can't save the poor benighted heathens from being themselves and getting on the boat.

More entertaining than the god forsaken show. Ncuti is no more the doctor than I am. Thankfully not in it much this week.
