Russell's back and so is the show he now claims as his own, Doctor Who. Has RTD betrayed the BBC and the show's traditional audience by taking it over and paying the bills with Disney dollars? Are the new episodes any good? Would a world without music be so bad? Fortunately for men named Russell T Davies everywhere, Ed's on hand to answer these questions.

The man is truly off his trolley.

i'm not sure i agree on the thing of dr who not knowing pop culture. it's obvious that he has a fondness for the UK in this time period and uses it almost as kind of base. for times he has even just lived for periods in straight chronology (taking the long way round) - he lived with susan long enough for her to attend school for a while. right at the time of beatlemania no less. for a while he was stuck on earth unable to leave. he was a university lecturer for a while. during those times he was immersed, particularly in british contempory culture. almost all of the pets he keeps are from this time. and british. (it's why for me, nardole and missy were such a breathe of fresh air. and i thought not bringing madame pompadour along was such a dissapointment). i feel like though he takes an interest in all of earth's history and often goes sight-seeing (we get little mentions now and then of people he meets outside of the storyline) he has a particular connection to this time and location. i doubt writers really thought much about the motivation for that much, as in reality it's just about convenience - it's far easier to have an assistant who's backstory is set in current day lewisham, or cardiff than if it's a plucky maid called mingyu working in the imperial palace during qing dynasty meaning difficult locations and expensive costumes/props. but it feels realistic that he would build an attachment to it during the extended stays. also coupled with the weird duality of his existance where different regenerations retain the memories, but are different identities, it makes sense that each doctor might feel anchored to the people and places they first visit on each generation - which holds up for the majority of regenerations since the reboot.

If Russell T Davis ever had any talent it’s certainly not showing up now in current Doctor Who. He split the Doctor in half because the Doctor needed a rest!! Regeneration is a renewal so RTD doesn’t even understand the show. Sack Russell T Davis and the Bad Wolf company.

You don’t have to be afraid of things that are strange and new, you know. You could try embracing them, see how that feels. It might be scary to not understand, but the best things often are. It’s far too easy to give up and awfully hard to start to try again but a better world only happens because we believe in it

you know Russell's name isn't pronounced that way, right? And it is a co-production so the BBC partly pays for it alongside Disney, who i think you're overestimating their involvement - Russell confirmed at a Q and A that the most involvement they have in what happens in the show itself is notes and suggestions they can give but it is up to the writer whether those notes and suggestions are taken on board so the ideas and stories are from the minds of Russell and other writers, no creativity is compromised which is a good thing!
@drmacclevoid
@drmacclevoid 29 дней назад
It's mispronounced as a sign of monumental disrespect. It's what we, in the non-literal world, call a running joke. That's a joke that's repeated often, the familiarity becoming a joke in itself, not a joke with legs with runs under its own power. As for Russell being the best source of Dr Who insider news, Russell says a lot of things. You can see an example of this in the intro to the video you've just watched.

Would have agreed 10 years ago, but the BBC has destroyed itself from within. I've worked for the BBC and I've seen the changes and whilst I wouldn't want to see it end because of one atrociously made programme, when 90% of their output is terrible ( a rough estimate of where the BBC now stands) then sadly It's already dead. A subscription service might save it and oust the destroyers that have settled in its ranks over the last decade or so. RTD blows with the wind, he'll go where the money is and it's industry insiders like him that started the rot. The BBC themselves don't want to support quality like BBC4, but they'll resurrect the abysmal BBC3 and chase a demographic that is no longer interested. I'm afraid you're behind the times, the BBC is no longer a bastion of cultural excellence. They have been the architects of their own decline and whilst it's sad considering the esteem they were once held in around the world, it's now a shallow corporation that is mockery of what it used to be and it doesn't deserve to be propped up by a population it no longer adequately represents or reflects. Ironically it is the BBC that have become the revisionist airheads that disrespect history, not the wider population. You can't lose that level of respect without a reason.
