This was a great episode! I knit my first sweater four years ago and it dd not fit well at all, way too big. After watching Deborah, I tried taking a sweater that I have that fits, laid it on top of my too big sweater, basted new seams and tried it on. I was amazed at the improved fit, so I took to my machine, sewed new seams and cut off all the extra fabric. Now I will be wearing this sweater and am encouraged to try more garments.

A fabulous interview with Deborah Newton. She was so well-prepared with swatches and examples that it was inspirational! Lots of great info! Purple should be excellent in your sweater. “Squinting” is so useful to determine contrast of light vs dark...I first started squinting when choosing fabric for quilts, and I often squint to choose yarns for knitting and floss for embroidery. I guess this is an example of what Deborah said about transferring skills from one craft to another!

Oh my ! Fum recollections have flooded back of my wonderful evening of feasting as "Lady Heather of the Antipodes" at a Medieval evening un UK, c 1978. Also, we attended a Medieval Festival in Maryland years later, about 1984, which was also a day of merriment with jousting, Shakepeare actors roaming around, fair games etc - marvellous.

What a wonderful episode again!!! As far as the color choice for your sweater is concerned, I vote for the purple too. As soon as you put the purple skein close to the sweater, it was a perfect match!!! I am Czech and this is the second time I hear the Vltava (Moldau) piece by Bedrich Smetana (who was Czech) in your podcast.. It just lifts my heart up... I love this piece!!!! Thank you!!!

Fabulous episode. I just loved hearing from Deborah Newton. Everyone should learn to sew! I learned sewing, knitting and crochet as a kid, and the sewing really helps me understand garment structure for knitting. I was so excited when Deborah flashed on the screen the diagram for cutting out bias strips. I learned that technique from a book years ago--it's magic.

A lot of my friends are in the SCA in America. I live in England and in 1992 I joined Regia Anglorum, (Kingdoms of the English) although of course you don’t have to be English to join! We recreate mainly Western European people from 950-1066. I became enthralled by textile production from the period and have been studying it for the past 27 years. I have given many lectures on the subject and written a few chapters for academic books on the subject. (Sorry, no knitting back then!)

Wow ,Wow What a video! Andrea your sweater is just gorgeous. I love green , but the first time you talked about it I almost screamed purple. The low contrast is most elegant plus it allows the eye to take in the beautiful stitches added to the garment. Deborah Newton is a mind blower. In the late 60's /early 70's we added crochet and knit trims to our garments and experimented with free-form crochet in several yarn types. It was a fun time. I have been a life time sewist and Deborah's interview brought back memories of a great era of exploration. I hope this inspires many to get her book, take her classes and do all the things. Thanks to all, Cheryl

I loved your discussion of choosing colors at the start, was inspired by and look forward to Andrew’s cable work (working on these skills myself at the moment), and, as a weaver, knitter, and quilter, was fully engaged with everything explored with Deborah Newton! What a treasure. And yes, the music is always a rich addition to every podcast. The Maldau is a particular favorite. Thank you for your thorough preparation, consistent thoughtfulness, and creative inspiration with every episode.

What a great interview with Deborah! And once again totally timely (How DO you keep reading my mind?, laughing) as I have a sweater that is too big that I want to alter. Her comment about garment makers using all the different creative techniques really hit home! And I loved Stephanie's designs and desire to make more economical options available. Lastly the music...both pieces were spectacular. Thank you so much for another great episode. Oh yeah, I love the purple choice for your sweater.

Thanks for sharing your thought process when selecting yarn colours. It’s really interesting and educational to follow. When you held up that purple yarn against your sweater, I loudly said YES! like I was watching sports. 😆 It’s perfect! Can’t wait to see the result. The interview was excellent, as always. What a great idea to pick up stitches from an embroidered chain. And all the alterations were just brilliant. I’m going to have to get that book.

That purple looks really good on your sweater, I personally like it better than the green. Since green is more or less complimentary to the reddish color of the body, it looks like a bit of a harsh contrast.

I love that Stephanie Earp was your knitter of the world guest. Lovely designs. As a former Montrealer, I am anxious to visit Espace Tricot on my next return trip. Deborah Newton is such a generous knowledge sharer. What a wonderful way to spend time with her in your interviews. Again, from your knitting updates and special features to the music, including your voice, Andrea, I always so enriched after each show. Indeed, joining as a Patreon is such a small price to pay for such quality content. Thank you! 🇨🇦 🇩🇪 ps. I love the purple choice, and your persistence in finding just the right hue. Just a quick comment, before I watch the rest of this episode: The darker green is soooooo much better than the lighter. I would definetly choose the darker one! @FruityKnitting 5 лет назад
Hi Louise. Some of the music that we use is copyright, and because of that, RU-vid puts in ads and some of the revenue from the ads goes to the music copyright holders. It's unfortunate, but we did decide that we want the good music. This episode had more copyright music than normal. I think that you, as viewer, could pay some sort of subscription to RU-vid and then you would get it ad-free. I don't know the details there. Thank you for watching! A + A.

I have knit a few things in the color Andrew is using for the scary cabled project and I really look forward to seeing that project in upcoming episodes. Unfortunately, I cannot participate in this KAL. I have too many commissions from family. Can I consider miles and miles of stockinette scary? as in dying of boredom? See Espace Tricot's Mayu. Interesting construction, tedious knitting. Thank you for adjusting your patronage request. I really prefer the approach the Bakery Bears do to sell the value to their supporters. Oh I like the purple. I love to cable, but have never been happy with the way cabling without a need looks when I do it. It looks more pulled than it should. Andrew you may find you do not like that shape of your metal cable needle. I prefer two other kinds. One if a U-shaped metal needle where the stitches don't fall off as easy. The other is a straightish wooden one where the wool will cling to the needle a bit more. So when resting with stitches on it, the stitches don't slide off. When I knit cable socks, which I am very fond of, I use a sanded toothpick. By having the right cabling tool for what feels good in your hands, the whole cabling process will be easier and each cross will be more welcoming. This cardigan will be beautiful.
@FruityKnitting
@FruityKnitting 5 лет назад
Hi Sunny. I can imagine that a straight wooden cable needle might be good to use. Norah recommends getting a needle which is about two sizes smaller than the needles you are knitting with - as you say, so that the stitches don't fall off. I might look at what I can find. Thanks for watching and for your comments!
