UK designer Ria Burns is our interview guest in Fruity Knitting Podcast Episode 98. Ria's passion is creating sustainable knitwear, and in our interview, we look at hand-dyeing using vegetable waste and plants from the garden or foraged from the local area. We're also talking to Sidsel Høivik about using crochet and embroidery to embellish your knitting projects.

This was one of those episodes that was really, really interesting in every aspect, especially the washing and taking care of your jumpers! I thought I knew how to do that (my excellent mother) but some of your specifics like the same temp water for washing and rinsing, and the freezing in a plastic bag to kill any moth eggs, etc. Priceless! I'll be watching this episode again several times, and am now thinking of what I can knit and embroider too..... so very pretty and feminine. Where else can you also learn how to dye at home yourself with natural products. Just a priceless episode!!! I've got lots to try..... thank you so very much.

Your pile of sweaters just makes me want to learn to knit faster. I'm sure you look at your hand knits with the same googly look a bibliophile would give to their shelves of books. I have only knit ten sweaters in 2 1/2 years, all fairly simple patterns, but then your information on how you take care of your knits has given me the courage to get a little crazy and try some more advanced patterns with better quality yarn. As always you both are just so wonderful to watch and I appreciate and love all that you do.

This episode was chock-a-block with lovely content and information! You two took us to so many places, from frescoes to washing your knits to natural plant dyes to works in progress to glorious embellishment in Sidsel Hoivik’s work. I remember meeting her work through this podcast and your interview with her. Being a patron of this show is always worth the monthly investment without a doubt-the content is rich, deep, and I am always writing down a new book or pattern or yarn that I need to get to know because of your interviews, projects, or suggestions. Be safe and stay well-sending best wishes from my shelter in place here in Northern California.

In this lockdown time, time is passing slowly so I watched this episode ever so carefully, taking in every word to make it last as long as I could. Thankyou for the last hour and a half, it was so enjoyable. And I loved the knitting and music compilation of last week. That too was a tranquil but soul filling period of time. I came across it by chance which made it all the more special. Love you both..

I went on a long hiatus last year not knitting or watching podcasts (had other commitments) but I continued to be a patron because I knew I would come back to wonderful and informative shows. Thank you for your hard work to give us such quality pieces. I love watching the two of you interact....makes me smile often. Andrea, the music you add is sublime and Andrew’s short history lessons are very interesting to me. Also I want to thank you for referring back to past episodes so I can easily revisit them. Oh Andrea, so lucky to have Andrew knit up that new jumper in that yummy colour. You will look great in it. Sidsel Hoivik has some beautiful garments. Taking care of our garments is key for them to last. I have a 1st knit that both my daughters have confiscated as their own. It is 35 years old but is timeless. Thank you for the refresh on taking care of our time and wears. PEI in September!!! Sounds fabulous! Natural dyes are the best, even if they fade over time. OMG! What a great podcast, so much valuable and interesting information! Andrew is coming along with his knitting. Andrea, I really appreciate your knowledge on how to care for the items we make, very thorough. Your daughter is lovely. Your guests are amazing! Sandsel is beautiful, and so are her designs__and though I've tried my hand at embroidery on knitted items I wasn't very happy with my technique/results. However, Sandsel has inspired me to try again on some future projects I have in mind, I've done some colorwork ages ago but not stranded or fair isle so, first, I need to practice a bit. Your segment with Ria was fastinating__it's amazing the varied effects that even different waters have on the final color of the fiber! I just love that many young persons today are so involved with the many aspects of the fiber arts! It appears we are having a revival, a renaissance if you will, of all things artistic that enhance our life experiences__I love it! And so, thank you Andrea and Andrew, for all the work you do so we can enjoy learning more about the history, places, and persons involved in the fiber arts today! 🐑🙌🙌🙌😺

I like the idea of a local meeting for mending/darning holy knitwear, where the people learn from eachother. Not so long ago I had a friend here who needed my help in mending socks. I hope this can 'pay forward'. When you spend many hours on knitting (or other craft) and a lot of money on real wool, the garment you make can't be thrown in the garbage only because of some little holes ...

I loved the look of Sidsel’s designs and your cropped version of her jacket. I would definitely order something from her shop if she sold her patterns or offered her kits in Merino wool. Before I discovered Merino, I believed that I was allergic to wool as wearing a traditional wool even for a short very short time with a T-shirt underneath,time give me a red rash on my skin.The same qualities that make this wool so durable and resistant to pilling make it very irritating to sensitive skin.

I knit a lot of socks and I am very familiar with the problem of stretchy/sloppy socks after the first wear. My best socks are knitted with needles a size smaller than the yarn calls for. It helps them hold their shape a bit. I went a bit far recently with a pair of wool socks in a fairly dense merino yarn that I knitted on a good size and a half smaller needles. They turned out so dense that they can stand up on their own like slippers. We will see how my son likes them.

What beautiful footage of Stein-am-Rhein - I live only 15 min away and we frequently go there for a coffee or a meal or to browse the pretty boutiques! Now my daughter has moved to the next village, right near those little islands in the middle of the lake that house an extremely serene religious house and chapel in the middle of a nature reserve :) So we will have even more reason to go... in fact, the whole area around the lower lake Constance is a bit of a secret tip, with fantastic hiking, sailing and cycling, river trips and general appreciation of the good life!! I so enjoyed the segment on caring for your wool knits and learned a lot. I do have a question about hand knitted socks however. You mentioned wearing your socks several times before washing. However after wearing once, my socks gets stretched out and are sloppy on my feet. I use nice 80/20 sock yarn and make a small size, 56 stitches. What can I do about that? I make them ribbed as well. I wouldn’t even consider making a lace pattern because they stretch out worse. Can you teach a lesson on it, and address this problem. I would so appreciate that. I also loved Andrew’s segment on the frescoes and stories about the philosophies of the thoughts of the artists. Loved that a lot and the fantastic music. Would like to see more of Jack! The other critical consideration to prevent felting when washing, besides temperature change or agitation is running water directly on the garment. Many machines are different , so if the washing machine has any chance of this it might be a good idea to stop the machine and remove the bag while the tub fills for the rinse cycle.

I'm a bit late to the party, but could you possibly knit a bit of waste knitting with the amount of stitches your sleeve would be, and start your yoke on that. Then when you've finished the yoke, you pin the sleeves to it, try it on, add if needed, then Kitchener the sleeves on? I may also be a bit strange because I really like Kitchener stitching, but the flexibility and not having to unravel a lot might make it worth it...

Andrew if you do want to consider knitting faster in the future, you might want to try a knitting belt as it is easier to flick the wool and has less movements overall, I find. Knitting in the round on the belt as opposed to by the piece does make it easier/quicker as usually there is no purls to speak of and this does help immensely. Just a thought. ;) NancyKnot
@FruityKnitting

Hi Nancy. That is a good idea, particularly for a larger project like the Martin Storey top, although I would prefer to try it on a swatch before using it in a real project. I am also curious about "flicking", although again I'm hesitant about trying it mid-project. Thanks for watching!

@@FruityKnitting Oh golly I wouldn't change mid knit either. Maybe try a hat as your 'swatch' because it will give you a better idea than a wee swatch...it is interesting how you knit in the round but on two straight needles using a third to make new stitches with. Can't wait to see how you get on.
