Pretty in-depth, here's some minor notes and corrections: Slime girls allegations were proven true, but it's not exactly possible to just replace all the music in the game in a short timeframe while still maintaining the quality, so I doubt there's much Omocat could have done here. I think there's still worth in discussing whether supporting the game supports slime-girls, though considering they seem to have changed and linked donations links in their tweet, one can hope the money goes to the right place. That said, not supporting the game would also mean not supporting the people who worked on the game. The words "loli" and "shota" originate from the words lolicon and shotacon, which come from Lolita Complex and Shotaro Complex. However, there the words themselves still refer to the type of character specifically, as you mention in the video. For some people the words will always be linked, and I don't think it's unlikely some people have only seen the words used in a NSFW context, in which case they are justified in disliking the use of it. So we get in a situation where two groups of people have different valid experiences with a word, and there's not really any good solution to this. One can't really blame people for having used the word before, and given that Omocat has later apologized and stopped using it after finding out the other meaning it's already a non-issue. As for R34 of underage characters, the people complaining about the word shota most definitely have something against this too. However, somebody complaining about some random low-follower person on the internet is A: not going to do much, and B: not going to be seen by many people, nor will the people who actually view it care. I don't think it's fair to call this hypocrisy just because those specific people haven't mentioned literally everyone making underage R34 art. On the topic of gatekeeping and ranboo, during the whole debacle I made a poll asking people if they wanted Ranboo to play Omori, and out of 9.7K results: 16% Wanted him to, 7% Wanted him not to, 68% Wanted Ranboo to decide for himself, and 9% Abstained. I think this shows this is *clearly* just a case of the loudest minority (though there might be some sampling bias due to it being a yt poll). From my understanding, part of the reason Ranboo decided to not play Omori was due to some of the more graphic parts of the game, like the self-stabbing. Meanwhile Night in the Woods takes up similar themes without this, so I think it was a fitting replacement. Lastly, one part of criticism you missed was over Fujoshi/Fudanshi shirts. Fujoshi and Fudanshi are people who like BL (gay) media, fu coming from Rotten and joshi and danshi coming from girl and boy respectively. There's honestly way too much discourse to talk about here, but it's also a word people have different experiences with, with no clear answer on who is "right". One misconception I've seen is that "Fudanshi" are guys who fetishize lesbians, which is incorrect. I don't know where this came from, but Fudanshi is just the male counterpart of Fujoshi, a guy who likes BL.
As for Silva/Slime Girls, I have one question: At what point does someone become forgiven for their past deeds? I mean, the entire game of Omori is all about forgiveness, isn't it? Sunny did something absolutely terrible, and the whole game's purpose is to show that people can find redemption and forgiveness. Okay so Silva did something bad a number of years ago. Silva admitted to it, and apologized for it and is trying to move on. But nope, Twitter won't let them. Sins can never be atoned for, apparently and I freaking *hate* that with a passion. Silva did something wrong, and their music is in a game, so let's cancel the game! /eyeroll Give me a break, already. Silva _admitted_ to it, and even apologized for it. What more do people want!?
It really is quite fascinating that a game all about moving on and seeking redemption for past actions has controversies surrounding the past actions of the developers.
i saw someone a while back trying to cancel omocat because of sweetheart. they said sweetheart was a you-know-what due to her attraction to hero. sweetheart being.. a sentient donut… and a figment of sunny’s imagination.. people will go to any lengths to stir the pot and cancel talented people.

Man, as an indie game fan, I really can't stand twitter. Every good person, that makes an incredible game gets cancelled. It's really great to see people actually be intelligent and defend OMOCat. Kudos.
I honestly have no idea how these people are able to misinterpret the game to find something to complain about instead of just enjoying it like a normal person.
I have seen people in the fandom believing **HERO TAGGED YOU!** and people on other fandoms doing much worse, so no surprise. That's why I push for using arguments and proof as much as possible in comments.
Just a note from an indie developer: I have to say even *if* the accusations that Omocat spent the Kickstarter money on their house and fronting their merch store... then that's a perfectly reasonable use of the money. For a start, $200,000 isn't much for even a small studio over a period of a couple of years, let alone 7. Investing a portion of that into merch sales, which are a continuous source of income, makes perfect sense. If you're in for a long development cycle, any source of continuous income like that is priceless. As for the house, were Omocat to pay themselves a salary from the kickstarter fund, a large percentage of this would go into paying for their house anyway. Once again, it makes financial sense for her to simply use a lump sum to pay off their house, saving on interest, etc. And, as for the lawsuit. It wouldn't have happened. For one, failed Kickstarters are a thing. It's always a risk, especially with projects as ambitious as Omori. Had Omocat ran out of money and the project have fallen apart, well as a backer you have to accept that risk. Had they simply ran with the money, even in that case there's likely nothing any backer could have done. As for irregular updates, I checked and it seems they posted them about once every 3-4 months. Honestly, this is fine and with all the fuss made about it I expected far fewer! Some times you really just don't have much interesting to show, sure a balance patch like update showing all the minute changes you made to enemy HP pools and hit chances would probably make backers feel more included, but you have to balance that out with actually sitting down and making the game when you can't afford a dedicated community manager to handle all that. Besides, you have to leave something unspoilt left for the players, I shouldn't even need to point that for a game like Omori! Personally, I'd have gone with monthly updates, but that's really honestly such a minor issue. On everything else... these people just need to touch grass. Breathe in, breathe out. It's just a game, it can't hurt you... wait it's Omori it absolutely can what am I saying.
People also don't realize that making games is hard and Development Hell is a thing, games take very long to be finally made, especially if you have a small number of people. The only reason why you see big companies like Nintendo have games come out not too long after their reveal trailers is because said game is basically done and they're just working on finishing touches and testing
Man, discovering that slike girls was a bad dude was pretty sad, considering I already knew that Pedro Silva was involved in some stuff, but never touched on it. I don't feel bad about listening to the Omori Ost because it's for a project that other good people made, and it's a perfect puzzle piece to make this game even more of a banger, but its still a bit sour to listen to the stuff they did. Damn.

I really hope that Ranboo at least played Omori on his own time. It's sad that a bunch of people pushed him away from it just because they didn't want him to play it. It has an amazing story and deals with heavy subjects that can help people learn and cope with said subjects.

hey, japanese speaker here. shota and its female counterpart, loli, have always been synonymous with attraction to underage characters. the translation for young boy is 少年 (shōnen). the translation for a young pretty boy would be 男の子 (otokonoko). just a heads up!
I'm not fluent in Japanese (despite being Japanese myself) but I'm pretty sure both terms have a somewhat similar meaning, because every Japanese person I've met would not just go around and call little kids "pretty" (especially all of my teachers). "男" (otoko) means male and "子" (ko) means child, putting the two together would just mean "male child" However, I could be wrong.
In reference to calling omocat a scammer, Omori's original Kickstarter outline (like a campaign promise) was very ambitious, especially for one person, so things were cut, the game was delayed (it was supposed to get a 3ds port), and backers didn't get a lot of updates so a lot were pretty miffed. I wasn't a scam per say just lofty promises with bad communication
I hate how these threads will lead to people thinking the Omori fandom is toxic when most people I’ve personally interacted with in the fandom are so sweet and kind and funny. This is just another case of the loud toxic minority overshadowing the chill majority.

the saddest and most infuriating thing about this to me is what you said towards the end. I have a feeling that big youtubers and streamers (like jacksepticeye or markiplier) considered playing the game back when it was gaining popularity, but ultimately turned it down due to the misinformation and drama. a huge missed opportunity for more attention to be brought to the game.

I don't think comparing cancelling R34 artists who draw underage characters to Omocat was a fair comparison. Omocat is a prominent figure, with a booming business and now having a very popular game under her belt. If someone saw a thread talking about a creator they highly looked up to and financially supported through buying merch, ended up being problematic - it'd actually have more impact since Omocat's making a living off of the support of others. While if someone made a cancel thread on a random artist no one knows, most people would not care as much.

I have to give a correction on the whole DID diagnosis to Sunny. Mostly because Clark Elieson made a fantastic video about the psychology of omori. but in his video he states. "There are several technical problems with offering this up as a potential diagnosis for sunny. The First of which being that neither dissociative Amnesia, nor a dissociative Fugue are a diagnosis. They are, in fact symptoms. Often occurring as the offspring of PTSD." I highly encourage everyone to take a look at the rest of the video Clark Elieson made if you want the full argument, along with his thoughts about the game. As someone who has suffered from PTSD, i can completely relate to Omori on a spiritual level.

Omocat isnt ableist- if anything wakko is the one being ableist for ignoring and assuming that SUNNY has DID and his "alter ego" is OMORI when he isnt, OMORI is a representation of SUNNYs depression and guilt. "Diagnosing" SUNNY of having DID and calling Omocat an ableist and then getting backlash but still didnt delete the thread is causing misinformation of DID and the game itself. (This is my opinion lol)
Super sad to see this honestly the game is amazing. Interpretation can go many ways but it seems like twitter only takes it to the negatives. At the end of the day most things have problematic pasts. Sometimes just getting past those things is the easiest, especially when you can enjoy a really good game that's message is about facing your trauma and accepting it rather than running from it which just makes it worse.
This game means so much to me and seeing it get so much unnecessary hate is very sad. I think the Omocat tweets are just random edgy tweets many people make, I don’t believe she’s a pedo despite some of the tweets being really weird. It’s just an attempt at dark humor and the whole loli and shota stuff was very normalized and even glamorized in 2010s. I think that it’s normal for a creator to want to cash in on stuff that’s popular without thinking much about it. But on the other hand the Kickstarter and the Slimegirls stuff is definitely questionable. I’ve also been following Omocat since the earlier years of her fame and Omori was literally announced when I was in middle school. I’m currently attending university. The game could have come out way earlier but I still love it very much. I hope that other people get to experience what I loved about this game. So please give it a chance, it’s really very good :)
In regard to the whole shota thing, I'd say that the whole situation was probably a result of the time, the early 2010s weren't exactly the most self-aware years, so it all may have been some joke in poor taste. But I'd like to add that in japan, no person would refer to a child as "shota" unless they're talking about shota-con, japan has different ways to say children and some of them are different for girls and boys, but shota always has that connotation. If you go to a japanese person and in conversation use the word shota instead of yoji or kodomo or even just shonen or whatever else, you WILL get a weird look and the tone of the conversation will switch, so I don't think the "it just means child, but some people connect it with shotacon" argument stands; Because even in the native language, shota is still a word used in a fetish manner. Again this may have been just poor taste and a product of the time, we don't really know as with many artists of the time, omocat has become extremely secretive, so we may never really know And in 9:11 this is just straight up whataboutism and straw man, people called out omocat because she's ultimately the creator of the game, and she's the one making money off the sales and getting recognition because of it should we call out people who draw loli and shota? Yes. Totally, but that has nothing to do with the omocat situation, people drawing nsfw of underage characters is a problem of the internet as a whole, not just the omori community, again there should be no place for any of that content anywhere and tbh I think it's mostly twitter's responsibility to get underage porn out of their platform. I just recently played this game for the first time and I loved it!! I am also a DID system, and I did not at ALL think it was "ableist" or anything of the sort. I have some education in psychology and I've done lots of research on these topics, and I do feel like Omori is obviously a story of dissociative amnesia, and a beautifully told one at that. To try to suggest that it is enforcing harmful stereotypes just seems like such a stretch in my opinion. I'm always very quick to call out when people do spread harmful information and stereotypes about my disorder, but I really loved this game and it honestly seems to me like people were just being extremely nitpicky about the whole thing just to feed into the cancel culture, like most twitter users tend to do lol
As for the "It promotes harmful DID stereotypes!" I don't rlly think so. In my opinion, I think it's also trying to spread awareness about maladaptive daydreaming too. (Maladaptive daydreaming is where you daydream so much it starts to distract you from irl stuff. Symptoms and reasons are almost the same as Sunny's case so uh, yeah.)

OMORI is a game that has a *GIANT* content warning when you boot the game _every single time_ and every streamer ever has posted this content warning in the beginning of the stream, they usually have it on-screen somewhere in their stream, and a repeating chat bot that repeatedly warns people. Even if Ranboo had people in there with this... "pluralphobia" or whatever it's called, that doesn't mean the streamer himself needed someone else to tell him not to play the game. Said people could, you know, *NOT WATCH THE FOOKING STREAM.*

As someone with mental health issues, such as Osdd (Undiagnosed, so take this how you wish, I've went over symptoms and talked to systems with diagnoses) Sunny shows symptoms, yes, but the main issues that stems from that claim is that Omori as an alter ego doesn't make sense, seeing as alters are 1 meant to help with the trauma, and 2, alters don't usually have a connection directly to dreams as a source of their being, so to say Sunny has DID or Osdd would be to claim that Sunny somehow has a way of blocking Omori from showing himself in the real world segments of the game. Another point I'd like to make is that Sunny and Omori show the same personality throughout the story, and how the two characters are essentially the same. In regard to the fact that it is still possible for this, this brings up another major issue in the statement, Omori and Sunny are never shown as separate in the dreamworld, which for an alter, is unusual. At the end of the game, Omori and Sunny fight, which could be misinterpreted as him being an alter, but this doesn't seem to be the case at a deeper look, Sunny's battle with Omori, like stated here, is Sunny's battle against himself and his guilt, as shown when one disappears, in a system's case, alters fusing is possible, but unlikely, and a system just refusing into one is near impossible from our current knowledge (please correct me if I'm wrong) Omori as a character is portrayed as Sunny and is such, a manifestation of guilt and a symbol of depression.

I can't find my comment to edit but: About Omori being Sunnys alter; there is something called structual dissociation where they divide "alters" in two cathegories; ANP (seemingly normal personality) and EP (emotinal personality). They also placed all trauma related disorders together and divided them into pirmary, secondary and tertiary grade of dissociation. PTBS being at the primary part and DID being at the tertiary part. If Omori is something close to being an alter to Sunny they would only land at the primary structual dissociation which would be PTSD not DID.
I would like to mention that people who feel negative towards the shota shirt DO feel negatively about stuff like r34 and just nsfw in general of underaged characters, however it’s more vague, wouldnt get the attention as a post about a famous person, or would garner harassment. There was one minor on twitter who tweeted about a smut fic written about an underage character (who was aged up i think??) and another character that was only tagged as “lemon” so they didn’t know that lemon meant smut and was obviously upset by that, however this lead to the said adult making a very very long google doc about them trying to paint them to be a disgusting person (most of the reasons were pretty stupid) and it included voice clips of the minor and a doxxing threat and/or a threat to contact their parents about how horrible they were or something like that. This lead to said minor getting harassed by a bunch of people. I’ve seen people try to try to talk about people who make nsfw of minor characters, and people who agreed to it got more nsfw content sent to them (a lot of those people being minors) and a lot of other things. Twitter is a toxic hell hole. in my opinion BOTH of the things (the shirt and nsfw content of minors) are a problem however the omocat thing happened in 2014 and to my knowledge was just one thing/one shirt, people can change

honestly if you think omori is an alter he's still not that problematic, he acts almost exactly like any persecutor alter should, he never hurts anyone outside the system unless he's trying to protect the system or himself and tends to lash out at others in the system (sunny in this case) too not have to deal with his own self hatered and we see on multiple occasions that he tries tries his best to protect the system, even though in the end he's doing more harm than good (this is one of the defining characteristics of a prosecutor), to me his character viewed though this lens is one of the most accurate representations of persecutor alters in media

I'm sure sunny doesn't have did since omori never randomly switches irl and other than the trauma event, sunny doesn't seem to have memory loss. But yeah, parts of the late game can be good portrayal of persecutor in did otherwise

The difference between them is that the soyjack attempts to create change in society with reason and politeness, but the gigachad does not care about that. He only does what he desires to do. He hates society just like the soyjack but he acknowledges that he cannot change it. The norms of society are immutable. So thus, the gigachad says what society calls "egregiously offensive statements" and does what society calls "despicable actions," but he does not care for the person whom he is "offending." Meanwhile, the soyjack does care for the person who he is acting upon and he attempts to somehow change him, to change his mind about what he thinks is "offensive". In short, the soyjack wants society to accept and tolerate what he does, but the gigachad simply does what he pleases, regardless of society's opinion on his actions. He does not wish to change society like the soyjack. I am afraid that "Omori" perpetuates the philosophy of the soyjack. This comment would be too long if I were to examine the similarities between "Omori" and the soyjack, but I am sure of it. One only needs to look at the people who enjoy this video game to see that they fall in line with the soyjack's ideals.
I've seen systems on twitch play Omori who feel like Sunny has DID or OSDD who like the game, so even if that interpretation isn't as solid as DA, I don't think it's perpetuating the evil alter trope. Sunny has some intrusive violent thoughts, but any violent actions taken outside of headspace are either self harm or self defense, what about that perpetuates the trope of an evil alter? If anything, Omori might be considered a persecutor, if the notion that alters tend to fill certain roles like that actually holds any water and isn't some outdated theory? Fictional characters cannot be formally diagnosed, so ultimately I think that leaves it up to interpretation what condition or comorbid conditions Sunny suffers from, so I don't like shutting down other people's interpretations personally, even if I might think some other interpretation seems more accurate.
As someone with DID, you're completely right, Omori is a prime example for a persecutor alter. Omori is the best representation to DID I've ever seen, and actually helped me cope immensely. If you interpret Omori as an evil alter then you're the problem. Persecutors are not evil at all
The issue with twitter is that people want to be seen as a good guy so badly, they want to start some sort of drama at any given point over something that happened either recently or ten years ago so that they can be seen as some sort of hero calling out a villain, and that angers me greatly cause I highly doubt Omocat is anything close to a bad person.
yo, ranboo fan here, please don't attribute all of his fanbase to this! outside of twitter (and even in some parts of twitter), people were talking about how ridiculous the whole thing was, and how awful fans were being on both sides. this is a case of a loud, misinformed minority. the way a few fans acted should not be equated to _all of the fanbase._ especially because twitter's algorithm is practically made to breed misinformation and arguments - a lot of this was blown out of proportion by fault of the algorithm itself, rather than "stans".
