Your HONESTY in this video is so refreshing. As a lurker to the tarot community I often wonder how much of the videos is theater for each other, some kind of circle jerk of consumerism and and artifice.
This is ao funny. This year I'm making videos about USUNG cards more than anything else. IT has been frustrating to see how people want to LOOK at decks, more than talk about how to use them. So I appreciate the "circle jwrk" comment 😂
Thank you for saying that we are under no obligation to find the next perfect home for a deck💜If it's negatively affecting someone's mental health or living space, let it go ASAP! The constant research/acquisition/learning new deck/do i like it?/decluttering process is definitely exhausting and I'm so relieved to be done with it!!
When my parents sold the family home, I went to go save - or say goodbye to - a lot of the things still there. I liked looking at old school yearbooks, but didn't care to look through my old school projects. Even worse was seeing the amount of *stuff* that my parents had amassed over the years. Pots, pans, basins, pens, post-its, bulk things that never got used; more blankets and plateware than we ever needed; stacks of water bottles and wet wipes from pandemic times... and so much more. It frustrated me to see so much clutter and straight-up junk that was in our home for so long; now it's in some storage unit collecting dust until who knows when it'll see the light of day again 😬 If I pass on stuff to my kids, I'd want it to be things that they themselves would find joy in using or having. If they don't care for it, I'd rather take care of getting rid of it myself instead of burdening them with that task. Revisiting my old clutter-filled home was a nightmare, and felt so isolating. I feel similarly with you, that I want my life, memories, legacy to be more about memories and experiences rather than physical items, especially if I don't even really care for them.
This video is helpful. I keep thinking I need to sell any deck worth money over $40, but really I am at the point where I just need to get them out of the house. I am usually a super cheap person and it's hard for me to not sell the items and then they just sit because I am so overwhelmed with how much I need to sell and the time involved. I just need to donate them and get some relief at this point.
I’ve spread mine out in so many neighborhood little libraries, the giveaway shelf in the break room at work, thrift stores, etc. you’d be surprised what you can “live without”.
I’m not one for leaving many comments here on RU-vid, but I watch a lot of your videos and have enjoyed every single one - I find your thoughts and views on things very clear and grounding, relatable and interesting. If you ever felt like doing videos on your other interests, like art and books, I think there would be more than plenty of us who would love that just as much. Just sayin’, doesn’t have to be tarot 😉💖
I am so disenchanted with seeing "First Impressions" and "Unboxings" anymore. I have been craving seeing people upload videos about returning to decks they've had for a long time, providing reviews for tarot decks they work with really often, and what makes it worth using repeatedly instead of buying something new. I want to know HOW people use tarot in their spiritual practices, what are their favorite spreads, what are the weird ways they interpret specific cards (in general or in a specific deck). I feel like Tarot-tube is stuck on the surface and lacking any depth. Since I spend a lot of my time watching videos like the aforementioned, I'm being held back too. I watch a bunch of "Monthly Haul" videos but still feel like I'm not getting any satisfaction from doing it. This is a huge reason that I watch your videos - even if its not a view I agree with, I can tell that your content is coming from a place of deep introspection and it makes me realize how superficial I can get in this realm. I haven't commented on much here, but I really appreciate that you keep posting this type of content and bring these uncomfortable ideas forward.
Also, I'm not sure how into the beauty side of RU-vid you are, but Hannah Louise Poston makes videos focused on maintaining a manageable amount of makeup and clothing. She's constantly doing declutters and no-buys. She takes makeup she already has to create custom palettes that "dupe the vibes" of new things coming out that interest her. I don't know that this can (or should) be directly copied to tarot-tube, but I think I'd enjoy the tarot equivalent of that type of content.
I relate to this so hard. Back in 2021 I had to pare down my stuff as I lost my job and my landlord sold my apartment building. I moved home and have been helping with caregiving for my grandmother. I got my tarot down to the handful I use, and rehomed a bunch of books. Now that my grandmother is going into hospice at home, I was in the hospital a month ago and am not fully recovered, I am overwhelmed by the thought of all my stuff. I’m trying to pare back, but it’s hard when the spoons aren’t there. This is why I get exceptionally mad when I pick up something on a whim because everyone else loved it and it ended up not working for me. (I’m looking at you, Squid Cake Marseille.) Wishing you a more prolonged settled feeling once the culling is done.
I always think I'm choosing from my collection my deck to use, but if I'm totally honest, while I have about 20-25 decks (can't even remember ... ) , I just always take one of the same 6 tarot decks. Simply because those are in a box in the living room, where I tend to read most often. I never even think about fetching another deck from the other room. That's telling.... My theme of the year is Joy, and in January I rediscovered the joy of playing flute. This cuts back from my Tarottube time in 2 ways: practice time of course - all my devices are shut down then. But even when I'm online, I started to watch flute lesson videos, to improve my breathing technique, learn to do better trills, etc. And I found that both, the "enjoying something non tarot related" as well as "enjoying some of my free time without being online" do me very good.
Your first 10 minutes just said it all! I feel kind of "got at" sometimes when I say my collection kinda stresses me out. So, thank you so much for articulating how I feel myself. And, as you said books are NOT like tarot, AT ALL! I do love my decks, but I have to use them, so, if Im not, I just can't look at them sitting. I guess I feel bad, have some kind of guilt? Feel like they could be used by others who will enjoy them. So, again, I'm slowly culling, decluttering (although it doesnt feel like clutter, except in my head), curating. I'm at a point where I need to focus on the lovely things I have, the space I live in, the people I'm lucky to have around me. And a purgatory box? It's not a system that really works for me... I think once they go in there, theyll stay in there... so it's better for me to let them go. I will ALWAYS have a tarot collection but I feel it's all but complete now. Apart from my ONE unicorn deck... 😆 😅
As per usual I relate to so much of what you said in the beginning. I've been having a bit of a binge/purge cycle since late last year. I am the same way in that I need things gone asap, I can't just "put things away". I am definitely guilty of throwing decks in the bin 🙊 just because I needed them gone. I am a minimalist in all other aspects of my life so I wonder why I can't be with tarot. I love my collection but it is just as saturated as the tarot market itself. Love the pusheen purgatory.
Why are you always retroactively criticizing yourself or your behavior? I find it wonderful that you change and evolve and find things that fit your ever changing self better. From my point of view (with nearly no knowledge of your life) it is you who always found a way to work on yourself, to enact change. You most likely did what was the best option at that time. Now it’s changing and every decision was and is valid because it made you you. Sorry for the rant. I hope my thoughts were understandable.
This was a really great chat. I totally resonate with what you experience... I experience the same sentiment. It's even worse when you're in between temporary and permanent housing and everything is in storage... because my decks just sit there waiting to be played and waiting to be culled. I do think over time our values change and it's natural that we'd weed out the things that no longer fit and turn to the things that do. Collecting is our biology in our 🧬... I think about what people do when they get old and what I'm going to do when I get old. I think having my decks to continually explore and enjoy on my porch will be my pastime. When I was a kid, I would visit my grandmas and spend time on her porch playing solitaire with a deck of cards. I try to release judgment so I'm not focused on it being some sort of illness or problem and more of a process. I enjoy control in my life and having order... when the collection is too big to feel comfortable with I see there are some lessons in culling and letting go that I need to practice... this even spills over into right now letting go of my 17 1/2 year old dog. I'm doing everything I can to keep him alive and happy but it's just that question of "when" and "why haven't I let go yet?" I say exactly what you do when it comes to placing decks... where should they go and I get mad with myself that I'm spending so much time and energy in the "getting rid of" process. But I also know, my whole life, I struggled with letting go... letting go of friends, letting go of relationships, letting go of old chapters and moving into new ones. This is just an exercise of that process and I take it as it is. When we start to lay into ourselves and amp the pressure... that's when we are unknowingly turning it into a problem that is never ending and can't be solved and that sentiment sucks joy from the hobby and experience. It's sort of weird... I used to have an issue with returning things if I didn't like something or didn't want it because I was really shy and embarrassed... but then one day, I decided I was going to let managing my things and being responsible for the things I bring in, which is also being responsible for my money, be a goal. I didn't used to put a lot of emphasis on my money and sustaining myself (to make a long story short on the rabbit trail... a lot of contradiction existed within this space). It's funny what you said about books not causing the same stress as having too many decks... I feel the same. I wonder what's the difference... sometimes I think it's because books are more socially acceptable and store easier... that if I die and someone sees where I spent all my money and time on tarot there would be shame and guilt there for them having to get rid of my stuff. But then I remember tarot is a part of who I am... like people who collect cars or golf clubs or yarn or friends. Some take up more room than others. And for those people who feel they need nothing and are clutter free... they also have anxiety for the same reasons we do. Maybe what we need is a vacation or to travel more often just to leave our homes so that when we come back we will embrace who we are without frustration and contempt for what it means. Btw, if no one is interested in Avatara... I'd like to know how much. I live in the US and have been wanting something with a Mexican/Latino flavor to reflect my family history.
Unfortunately we're neither friends (honestly I feel like I'm listening to a good friend whenever I watch a video of yours with your open rambling 😊) nor am I living in the states 😂 I'm at the same place at the moment, running out of space and fallen out of love with decks and books.... But then I go back and flip through the cards... MAYBE I keep it... MAYBE I throw them out 🤷 I don't know 😂
Since you can't stand JBG's work anymore, feel free to also rehome Notorious JBG and the oracle if you haven't already. No need to hold on to things that don't bring joy 🙏🏼

I wanted to love that deck so badly but when I really looked at the artwork, it didn't seem to make sense as far as the facial expressions alignment w/the card meanings. Also another thing that annoyed me in that deck was that some of the cards seemed as if they were nearly repeated images of each other. I did keep her Oracle of Shadows and Light because I use it for a very specific purpose a few times a year. That being said, I definitely feel that my relationship to her artwork has changed. There was a time in the long, long ago when I ordered JBG Strangelings checks every year from my bank 😂

I've stopped buying decks for the most part. Poof! Done.... I appreciated you talking about over dependance on tarot. I really stopped reading a bunch over the last year to keep my own feelings in perspective.
I don't go too overboard with collecting. I get about 5 decks a year on average. I just packed away the ones I'm not using and then bring them out a few years later and work with them again and they're like new 😂 im simple that way. Having too many out is overwhelming. Ive been thinking about selling off some oop decks i dont use.
If you ever decide to deep dive into astrology transits, old journals are key! I destroyed all my old journals when in my 30s...I wish I could get them back :'(

I also burned a deck in a ritual to unbound myself from Tarot. I burned my first Tarot deck.... 😈🤣... I did this 2 years ago, it was hard at the time but now I just cant stop laughing 😂😂 Now I use a deck, I dont like the art. It is a way to force me to actually learn Tarot and not dwell in the glamour of a beautiful one.
I heard US Games was going to publish it? I’m pretty sure it was the artist that announced that on her instagram. It’s why she hasn’t done another printing.
I listed my copy on eBay. It’s up now, if you’re interested. But, I made it an auction, so I’d get some $$ out of it, so again, waiting for mass market would probably be your best option. Maybe it will even be better with a cool guidebook and updated imagery. Plus it’ll be cheap. I might even want to rebuy it when that happens.
How much did you get for desert illuminations? I have the first edition and I am thinking of selling it . I definitely want to get my money back because I paid out of print prices and from overseas 😅@@MixtressRae

I also am making a declutter video and Santa Muerte is leaving my collection. The deck is too large to handle for me.
