In this episode, I discuss the unsatisfactory way in which atheists react to the question of why people follow gurus, babas, and spiritual masters. He argues that we all have a natural desire to find purpose in life and that the lack of a clear answer from atheists often leads people to turn to religion. Perhaps atheists need to do better in addressing this question and offers some insights on how to approach it. If you're interested in religion, atheism, and Indian culture, this episode is a must-listen. Don't forget to like and subscribe to the channel for more content on Indian atheism and secular values.

@@vimohthank you for replying vimoh and a week before only I have watched his videos since I know we develop biases so easily so every now and then I question myself only, by looking at the opposite arguments, and in his videos he seems to be confused and biased as well, on one hand he is talking about free thinking and on the other hand he is criticising acharya prashant for explaining the verses according to his own understanding 😂, and also he (arpit explains) is just extracting the literal meaning of the verses, he also talks about focussing on technology and science development, and which is really good but not at the expense of harming the environment to the extent 1000s of species are getting extinct and all that... we can clearly see the stats of rise in mental illness, depression and climate change which is the biggest threat for the humanity, some of points of arpit explains i agree, it puts a question mark on my understanding as well, but predominantly to my understanding I disagree with him he has just misinterpreted him by mere watching some of his videos, he has produced 7k + video, you have to give months in understanding him , acharya prashant addresses many issues and he also has some flaws in it, but all in all he is addressing the real issues of this generation and humans as well and talking about the casteism clip , it's not good to cut the clip from a video and attack on particular part in a way you want it to be it is called as straw man fallacy.. just watch his videos "water has memory" there only he criticised the casteism.... See, I m also a rational person, I m not a follower of achrya prashant nor I adore the scriptures, it's just that whatever I will find logical and worth understanding I'll appreciate to that extent only and the rest I will discard.... 😀

As an atheist I feel like we should absolutely collaborate with someone like Acharya Prashant. Now I obviously don't believe all of his solutions are sound but amongst the blind followers of the Vedas, he is the most rational. He urges people to focus on the philosophies rather than believe the stories as axiomatic historical truth and that is a minor step to push his audiences towards rationality. You're right in saying that people are looking for answers and end up in the laps smartas5es like babas, our survival instincts will never let us rest in a face of a challenge or a trauma.

No there is a problem with your assumption that people go to Guru to find *purpose* acharya Prashant was asked about purpose of life when he visited a college, he said that this question is foolish this arised in you because something is not ok, and this is what need to be fixed. The sole purpose of great saints and gurus have always been to create a good human, when river flows dirt also get drawn with it we have to purify the life giving water before consuming it, you are rejecting it just because it is polluted... Even if you are atheist (i am too) if you read Indian texts or listen to acharya Prashant or j krishnamurti or Swami Vivekananda or read buddha you will know that philosophy here is more mature than western thought and guru's are sources and propagators of this knowledge request: I am not related to AP by any means but don't place him alongside that people, listen him you will know what Guru actually is 🤍

Absolutely brilliant analysis. We humans find it difficult to digest that it all came out of nothing, with no greater universal purpose. This makes us feel insignificant in the greater scheme of things and belittles our very existence. Finding one’s own purpose may suffice for some but not for most. So for the majority, some explanation of a higher purpose rather than just mundane existence works as a balm, then whether it is provided by religious scriptures or by some human claiming to know the secret. Also many a times, personal tragedy or hardship, especially involving a loved one makes people search for some explanation or reason, and spiritual reasoning especially that provided by babas helps in the healing process maybe better than a rational thought process P. S. I have recently discovered your channel and seen some livestreams and have yet to come across anyone ready to calmly and logically defend his position as you do. Kudos

hmmm .... interesting. Using the same argument, how can you be so sure that there is no meaning to life? If you (not just you, I mean any atheist) don't believe there is a meaning, does that mean it is universally true for all that there is no meaning? Or is it just as per your experience there is no meaning? And if the word 'meaning' is subjective, then your personal reasoning/experience to believe that there is no meaning is similar to someone who believes there is one and tries to find an answer, at least when it comes to freedom of choice. But on a much grander scale of existence, both are equally useless and useful at the same time. Useless, knowing that death is eventually going to knock on your door whether you believe life has a meaning or not. And useful, because these tendencies eventually shape the quality of our experience while we live. But a really good point of view. Appreciate it.

Guru simply means a "teacher". If you want to learn Maths, you go to a Maths teacher, if you want to learn guitar, you go to a Guitar teacher. Similarly, people have spiritual/meta physical or ethical questions in life. Gurus give answers to such. I am not saying all Gurus are right or good, as every person's spiritual journey is subjective. What may be very special for one person, may be stupid for another person. What we can do is figure it our ourselves. I think ultimately it goes to the saying of Buddha - Don't believe in what I say unless it makes sense to you.

Glad for the reply If I may elaborate for clarity's sake: the concept of evidence in the physical world (or scientific domain) doesn't exist in the spiritual/metaphysical exploration, simply because the former is objective, while the latter is subjective. It's like, you and me trying to argue over the taste of salt, or the color of red. It is a matter of individual experience that can't be objectively verified. And yet plays a central role in our life. There is no evidence for consciousness, yet I don't think you deny that it exists. There is no evidence for Suffering, yet you can't agree it exists if we are all material objects purely following physical rules. Hence the domain of human experience that is spiritual (not physical) can only be known from the inside, and not outside.
@uttamraj3786
@uttamraj3786 Год назад
@@DibyajyotiDas I agree with you sir that these subjective experiences play a central role in our life and everybody can have their own meaning or interpretations of these because how we interpret them depend on our past experiences and environment in which we grew up or exposed ourselves to as these are the things which shape our personality. Problem is the baba culture which is now growing in India. These Babas are exploiting needy people in the name of hope and misguiding youth. If finding a meaning for life make someone happy then that person should definitely beileve in it as long as he is keeping it personal and his beileves are not harmful to others. Joining these things with mysticism and super natural and making absurd claims about this universe should be stop. And as you said that the domain of spiritual experience can only be known from inside, this makes these Babas completely useless as they are external. One should think critically about these spiritual experiences by himself instead of following Babas. Btw If we follow general definitions of consciousness and suffering, I think there are enough evidence for both of them. One can easily verify both by making some observations and then ask others whether they have felt these kind of experiences or not. These experiences doesn't need to be same for everyone. Just the fact that other's can also feel these kind of experiences is itself a proof of consciousness and suffering.
@DibyajyotiDas
@DibyajyotiDas Год назад
@@uttamraj3786 What I meant by consciousness is that it cannot be measured, quantified, or detected by any physical scientific instruments. That is what I meant by evidence, when you said - things can make sense but have no evidence. But if asking people and reaching a consensus is how you define evidence, then we are on the same page here. As for Babas, I again agree with you. There are conmen and charlatans everywhere, who use pseudo scientific babble and superstition for their own purposes. Where I disagree, is that there are also genuine people who offer practices and tools to realise inner truth. Yes spirituality is an inward journey, but seeking answers to questions is everybody's right. In that sense, spiritual teacher have always existed and will always exist. It therefore boils down to us to use our intelligence to distinguish between the genuine and one who's not.

@sutirthhadas

Dear Vimoh, You really explained your point of view clearly in this clip but here, as a so called 'theist' I must follow up with a contradiction. Firstly, you are right, there are various corporate spiritual teachers who serves a fast pace package of the existential question. But there are bad apples in everywhere. You see constructive atheism is not only accepted in 'Hindu-culture'(as a part of Buddhism, Jainism, Ajivika) it is considered as an important aspect of any religious seeking. I must point out that you must read a number of western authors explaining atheism and shaped that argument with eastern way of argumentative discourse. That being said, even the Vedantik ideology also supports your claim on the 'question' that you just told that 'can not be answered'! So, if you are saying some 'Baba' telling his disciples to blindly follow him is undoubtedly wrong. The improbability of this claim is making me suspect that maybe, you are using Abrahamic binary logic to counter a culture with rich, ever contradicting and debating practices and rituals. I, myself accepted the scientific basis of my dharma(not faith) after being an atheist for good part of my upbringing in a agnostic so called left leaning household. So I can confirm, no bearded guy from internet, no passé minded parents told me to accept 'Guru parampara'. Id like to see intuitive and scientific people would embrace their atheism from an eastern point of view as sadly I see even atheism of west carries a certain dogma and conformation bias like the theology of west. I'd very much like to understand your response for an effective conversation. Namaskaram, Sutirtha :)

#Humble_comment Let's consider your point that how baba knows what is the meaning of life then Please Tell me , How do you know that there is no meaning of life ? or even how do you know that whatever baba is saying is wrong ? you don't know right . as far as i understoood upnishads , geeta, ashtavakra geeta and other saints like J krishnamurthy, Raman Maharshi, Poonja ji etc etc, sprituality beigns beyond mind , so every logic, analysis, everything which is the outcome of experience,/knowledge/ thought,/memory, will not give you a correct answer, it can only tell you that mind (memory/thought/experiences etc ) can not know. Thats why upnishads say that the truth is " agyeya" ( can't be known ). So you can not say that whatever a baba is telling is not correct , it may be correct, and also BABA also can not make a statement like whatever i am telling you is the only truth, because proof comes under boundry of knowlegde/experince/thought, whereas TRUTH is limitless . since mind(experience/thought/knowledge/I/EGO) is limited, it can't know the truth. There can be no proof for the support of TRUTH/GOD and also there can not be any proof against TRUTH/GOD etc. Only When Sometimes BABA etc make statement about prakriti ( materialistic world ) and there They can be wrong, and you might have proof, and we can criticise them. But whenever someone is talking about the things which are beyond mind/Experience/I/Ego/thought etc, then it may sound illogical to you and you can flaunt that it sounds illogical to you but you can not make statement like They Are wrong.

Well, just in case you think that the big bang has been proven wrong by jwst, that is not true The James Webb Space Telescope did not disprove the Big Bang theory. In fact, its observations have actually strengthened the theory. The telescope has been able to see galaxies that are much older and more distant than any that have been seen before, which provides further evidence that the universe began with a hot, dense state and has been expanding ever since. The telescope's observations have also revealed new details about the early universe, such as the fact that galaxies were much smaller and more numerous back then than they are today. This information will help scientists to better understand how the universe evolved and how galaxies formed. While the James Webb Space Telescope has not disproved the Big Bang theory, it has provided new insights that will help scientists to refine their understanding of the universe. The telescope's observations will continue to be studied for years to come, and they are sure to reveal even more secrets about the cosmos.

Few years ago we also found a particle faster than light. It was just an error by the equipment. Those 2 galaxies could be older or could not be. We need more observations from different sources suggesting the same. Let the James webb do more scans. Either ways it will only help us improve our understanding of the universe. If they really are older it will make us redo our calculation and improve. If it's not then it wil help us identify the error and improve upon it so that the error don't happen again.

Spiritual knowledge is often touted as a source of wisdom and enlightenment, but there is no scientific evidence to support its claims. In fact, there is a growing body of evidence that suggests that spiritual knowledge is nothing more than wishful thinking. One of the most common claims made by proponents of spiritual knowledge is that it can lead to improved physical and mental health. However, studies have shown that there is no correlation between spiritual beliefs and health outcomes. In fact, some studies have even shown that people who are more religious are actually more likely to experience mental health problems. Another common claim made by proponents of spiritual knowledge is that it can provide comfort and support in times of difficulty. However, studies have shown that there is no evidence that spiritual beliefs actually help people cope with stress or trauma. In fact, some studies have even shown that people who are more religious are actually more likely to experience anxiety and depression. The lack of scientific evidence to support the claims of spiritual knowledge suggests that it is nothing more than wishful thinking. People who believe in spiritual knowledge may feel comforted by their beliefs, but there is no evidence that these beliefs have any real-world benefits. In addition to the lack of scientific evidence, there are a number of other reasons to be skeptical of spiritual knowledge. For example, spiritual knowledge is often based on anecdotal evidence, which is notoriously unreliable. Additionally, spiritual knowledge is often shrouded in mystery and secrecy, which makes it difficult to evaluate its claims. Finally, it is important to remember that spiritual knowledge is often used to justify harmful or harmful practices. For example, some religious groups have used spiritual knowledge to justify discrimination against minority groups. Additionally, some religious groups have used spiritual knowledge to justify violence against others. In conclusion, there is no scientific evidence to support the claims of spiritual knowledge. Additionally, there are a number of reasons to be skeptical of spiritual knowledge, including the reliance on anecdotal evidence, the secrecy surrounding spiritual knowledge, and the potential for spiritual knowledge to be used to justify harmful practices.

@@vimoh but you need to know objectively what's good . And even in science nothing is objectively right or good. Eugenics in wrong hands paved the way to Holocaust of Jews. It's about the person and his evolutionary tribal urges in modern world.

Atheists and Baba are both two faces of the same coin. Both want to eliminate the other from "the business of helping fellow humans" and make money in the process and enjoy. Both must be exposed. A true atheist or believer will never preach or organise to help others because his conclusion is rock solid.

I have a very good answer, it's related to the very very primitive form of life which came to existence from a non living thing, It was basic structure of DNA ane it's goal was to create more good and more better bonds, soon more complex structures were born, they started storing information and then making the similar kind of structures on thier own( waise hi jaise Robot movie me Prof. Borah ke re built chitthi ne apne hi copies banana start kiye the) it soon started behaving like a living thing and life came to existence in forms of very small microorganisms. Now everyone knows how that life evolved and turned into marine life then came to land k. So the basic function of life is to live and reproduce and find ways to advance themselves so that they can explore each and every mystery of the universe. It's in our gene to modify our gene to survive long to live and explore the eternity. It's our curiosity why we are alive and conscious.
