I'm not a musician, or a drummer, but when I listen to this I think Ian Paice is the leader of the group. He sets the table and has unparalleled rhythm.
I actually don't know if I agree with that statement. What I WILL agree on is that the Mark II line-up made the best records, and Blackmore's riff-writing was pretty damn integral, on that score. Don't get me wrong, Blackmore is a great guitar player, great tone, etc. But, for my money, both Tommy Bolin and Steve Morse are more impressive players, overall. But, again, from a composing standpoint, Blackmore has the mantle, so to speak; I'd honestly pick him among the five best riff writers in all of rock, and that's a GIGANTIC gift. The other four? Keef (Richards), Page, Iommi, and Hendrix. Gosh, that was surprisingly easy!
Steve Morse is not that bad as Ritchie's replacement. I like Ritchie more because, I mean you gotta give more respect to the man who wrote the riffs than one who can replicate them, but he covers most of Ritchie's songs really well. I don't know about Don Airey though, Ritchie Blackmore is a legend as are all Deep Purple members, but Jon Lord was such a unique musician, I think he is irreplaceable. Still Ritchie Blackmore and Brian May still have their acoustic live performances they do today. But the most talent for a live rock band today(not counting classic bands that still perform) is Muse. Matt Bellamy has a unique vocal style, mixed with some classical piano playing, and kickass guitar riffs(I say riffs because Muse isn't really about solos, they have a few kickass progressive solos, but most of the time its just the vocal melody done on guitar) Chris comes up with some of the most memorable basslines, and he is an excellent backup vocalist. Not to mention he is a one man band, he sings, he plays guitar, keyboard, bass, harmonica and drums. Dominic, doesn't sing, in terms of live performances, he only does the drums but he writes all the synth rhythms they have. I recommend you look up their song Survival live at Rome Olympic Stadium 2013, or Space Dementia live at Reading Festival 2011
Missing this passion and creativity so much in todays music! Purple was at it's best at this stage! No other band still today can get to this level!!!!
Power amp distortion, totally different to preamp distortion plus the Hammond chucks out tons of harmonics, wasn't meant to but it does! :o) Totally know what you mean, just doesn't get old as it was old to start with! LOL
Agree, and on the topic of dueling how about Gillan & Blackmore in Strange Kind Of Woman live - now I tend to fancy myself when it comes to rock music knowledge so if you can tell me of another similar kinda thingy I'd love to know as to me it is totally unique to Gillan & Blackmore or did Plant and Page do it as well...
You can do both, ya know! YOU are the instrument...ya just havta get into the technique...and play on! I can play just about any instrument there is...I'm not very good on some because I haven't spent the time. It comes down to; How bad do you want it? Spend the time and you will be rewarded. The music is in your ear/mind...Go for it!!!
You are fantastic Ian there are no words to adequately express the joy and harmony you have given me over the many years. Thank you for sharing your talent with the world. 🖕👍✊👏👏👏
Too bad Deep Purple didn't get into the rock and roll hall of fame while Jon Lord was still alive. They better start inducting more quickly because they won't be around for their own inductions. This was great watching this.I am 63 and have loved them from the beginning.
At their peak (MACHINE HEAD lineup) fuhgedaboudit!!! So talented. Every member kicking serious butt. Tell me one thing, kids: how has the UK managed to put out soooooooooooo many GREAT musicians??? I mean, bloody hell.
After wwll as the uk rebuilt there was a big push on the youth going to art schools instead of heading to dead end industrial jobs. Then the kids got hip to american blues and rock n roll. It was a perfect storm. The Beatles hit and the rest is history......
Yeah during that time black Americans had already moved on to soul music, motown, etc...and white Americans were either still doing the Elvis style of rock, country or surf rock--so the Brits took old blues music made by older black Americans and flipped it into their own version of blues/rock and it went huge.
This is just as good as it gets. Live music, played by real musicians, rock, blues and organic. Skill levels of all of the legends that are playing is up in the clouds. They were in the wave of British rock bands that paved the way. Deep Purple, Led Zep and Black Sabbath. Now looked upon as an era that will never happen again, simply because these guys had to learn their instruments. Everyone wants to play in a couple of hours these days. And that's why music like this will never happen again.
the first rock song i ever heard,, forever changed my life,, my mind was blown within 20 seconds of hearing this song in 1972 .. machine head is a masterpiece for all time
One of the all-time greatest band line-ups. A bunch of guys who couldn't stand each other made some of the best music in history. One of my favorite bands... ever. Thank you, Deep Purple, for the enjoyment and influence you have given my life, and music!
@@kellyzang8423 From what I have read, and seen in interviews, it's mainly Gillan's animosity towards Blackmore, and Blackmore's disdain towards Gillan. That always caused friction between them all. They loved playing together, but couldn't stand to be around each other. Probably why they reformed and broke up several times.
this is from the time when musicians worked at new concepts and jammed like there was no tomorrow, all the while having fun, which is so very seldom seen today
Amazing this has always been my favorite band. All of them are superb musicians every one influenced me I even played drums because of Ian Paice, Jon Lord is so extra groovy on his B3 ,and Ian Gillian bad ass. Ritchie Blackmore took guitar playing to another level. This concert is like Gold. Thank you for sharing this wow.
Ian G. I am totally in love with you and have been since I was 6 or 7 years old. One of my uncles had the first album that DP came out with. I am 56 now and I am a singer I did a cover of Smoke on the Water and I am trying to relearn Child in Time I am a lifelong Fan of yours ♥️💯🤘🤘✌
@@boing2203 Deep Purple MkII members sometimes drank lots of alcoholics, but other than with MkIII member Glenn Hughes and MkIV member Tommy Bolin, any other drugs didn't play any role then.
Dear Mr. Gillan, I had the privilage of seeing you in concert when you toured the US promoting the Machine Head album. I remember the concert like it was yesterday you guys were absolutely amazing.Thank You and God Bless.
Saw them live January 1973. Hitchhiked 180 miles to and back. The backup band was pre-Stevie Nick's Fleetwood Mac. One of the great days in my life. Wouldn't cross the street to see any of today's hip hop garbage.
Deep Purple... I love them dearly and appreciate their music... this is REAL music, rare to find music like this nowadays with all the corruption in the industry.
I drank w/Roger Glover at the Pit Stop a bar in lakewood nj. and was grabbed in a headlock by Ian Gillan at a Judas Priest concert in the late 80"s ,so cool .Rock n Roll man.
What I love is that the piece so patiently develops, slowly building to a rocking crunch. Plus, you can so well hear the different instruments - and it really rocks!
Ian Gillan is an awesome singer. Every member of this band is great at what they do. Paice is a drummer's drummer. Blackmore is great. The late Jon Lord smokes that Hammond.
Ahhh the early 70s, weed ranged from 15 to 20 bucks an ounce, beer in the bar was a dollar or less a bottle and this kind of Rock-n-Roll stirred the soul.
Far better days gone by it's depressing knowing that there will never be music like this again. I saw them live at the Cotton Bowl in August of 1985 it was a hell of a show and I believe John Lord played AC3 not a B3 Hammond he said it would take more abuse he could throw it around more LOL. Each member was very very highly talented and together t h e i r music so good that none other compares to them. Speed King Highway Star and pictures of home and strange kind of woman damn I miss music like that
Great music. I wonder how stoned they were? See I'm a 70s child, just missed going to those gigs at 16. But hey growing up in the 70, 80,s were still bloody awesome.
