This is most likely to do with Next Generation heading to HBOMax later in March and this is only applied to the US only. I don’t know about other counties some of the show is still available to watch but it’s only a matter of time before all of it’s gone.
I still have access to all of the episodes, Degrassi Classic and TNG. But maybe it's region locked? I'm in Canada, maybe we get special access to Degrassi for cultural heritage reasons. LOL.

The actress was actually baffled when she found out she would be leaving the show. And since the crew never really told her why she was left wondering about if she was a bad actor. She said all of this in a video where she talked with Andrea Lewis (Hazel's actress)
That's sort of the strange thing about Emma's character. Even though she's often painted as the "annoying SJW activist" archetype, a lot of her feminism and overall values are pretty socially conservative. Though, I do think this is something she mostly grew out of in later seasons. I don't think an adult Emma in 2022 would be an antivaxxer.

Shane’s episode hit me hard. I have an older sister with a brain disorder, and it’s very true that their moods can switch quickly, she can go from eating to slapping herself and others from anger or excitement. I can understand how it can make people uncomfortable. What I didn’t like is Emma basically replacing her dad w/Snake after finding out he has a disorder. He’s never brought up again. That’s depressing to me. I can’t relate on isolating my sister just because she has a disorder beyond her control. We make sure to visit her, celebrate her birthday and holidays. I wish they had done the same w/Shane or at least mention him beyond these episodes.
As for Snake telling the students that Craig won’t be coming in because of his father’s death, that’s pretty normal to tell students this. During my time in school, there were two parent deaths that my classes were told about. Like we told that said student wouldn’t be there and as to what had occurred whether it was a sickness or a sudden death because it saves the child from having to their classmates what has occurred and it encourages the students to offer their condolences or to be careful about what we might say to those children.
Same. In high school there was a sudden death of a classmate over the weekend and to not have rumors go around they respectfully let kids know in the first class of the day that they had passed.

In elementary school, a classmate lost her mom and both grandparents over a holiday weekend. The Saturday before labor day, they had been in a terrible car accident. The classmate and her younger brother, both of their parents and both of their mothers parents were traveling in a van. There was a multi-vehicle accident and a truck driver, the girls grandparents and mom all died. Our teacher told us what had happened the following Tuesday and haf a conversation with us about how to be supportive of people grieving the loss of loved ones and how to uplift and show we care without overstepping or saying something insensitive.
Yeah, I remember in Elementary School a classmate’s father died of a heart attack and they informed all of us and made sure we were sympathetic for what he was going through.

I never noticed the nuance in Craig’s character. I’ve seen the show a million times so I’m not sure why it never occurred to me that he’s an extreme people pleaser and avoids conflict at all cost. Do you think that this causes him to cheat on all the girls he dates? He can’t confront the issues so he just cheats. Either way, Jake Epstein is such an incredible actor and I’m glad he’s finally getting the mainstream recognition he deserves. He’s amazing.
Craig and Manny were always my favorite characters from the early seasons (not necessarily their relationship; just individually). Seeing Jake giving his all in those scenes in season 2 still get me. Also, JT trying to attack Dean on Paige's behalf will forever be a defining moment! I never liked Dylan though...especially how his chracter turns out in later seasons.

i cant speak on accuracy for the time, but as a black somali canadian teenager in the present day i loved hazels storyline in dont believe the hype. i see a lot of myself from when i was 13-14 in hazel, mostly in the way she hid her identity and felt shame due to it. also the way the show mentioned things like her being born in mogadishu, the civil war in the country, and her wearing a hijab when going to mosque just added to the relatability for me. even if it seems like bare minimum research, hazel and this episode is some of the only explicit representation of a somali teenager ive ever seen, and it makes me extremely happy. ive talked about it with my siblings and my mom, and they all found it awesome. in terms of muslim representation, i think goldi is marginally better than hazel as goldis faith comes up more than once (even though i find it a bit :/ that shes repeatedly characterized as 'backwards' when it comes to things like lgbt issues and muslim womens rights to do things like not wear a hijab), but seeing as it was 2002 and good muslim representation is still scarce today, i still think hazel is great for what her storyline is and gave me a massive soft spot for her.

You deal out the 411, professionally give us your opinions on the series and respect any approaches with the production/airing sequence even if you disagreed with them. The episode where Marco comes out absolutely blew my mind as a kid. lol I grew up in the south, and maybe it’s cause I was only like, 10 or 11, but I only vaguely understood what being gay even was. His journey touched me so deeply that these days I really credit watching this show for being part of the reason I’m so open minded now and lean so far left now. (And later on, the episode with the trans guy also blew my mind when I was a teen. Lol maybe it’s cause the times change a little slower in the south?)
I can see here as a guy in Michigan I didn't even know trans people existed until seeing his character on Degrassi. It's also what made my mom wary of this show when I told her about it (she made me stop watching if because of characters doing coke)
I think White Wedding and Emma's period episode from season 1 does a good job of showing why Emma is the way she is. Spike is confident and confrontational on social matters important to her and entirely in her own headspace on personal matters. While also idolizing Caitlin (although, as we know, Ellie takes that up later instead), I feel like those 3 episodes specifically show how much of an influence Spike (and Caitlin) had on who Emma is. I like these little personality aspects that play a strong role in characters. Like Ashley's (and later Ali) selfishness always making her her own worst enemy and Spinner consistently being INCREDIBLY impressionable. JT is the bestest boy 😭😭😭 I agree that Craig's grief is about grief and not his later diagnosis. Grief is just weird, personal, uncomfortable, selfish in a needed way, and there really is no wrong way to grieve as long as you aren't hurting yourself or others Accidents Will Happen was the first time I illegally watched a TV show

I absolutely love the fact that all the episodes are named after 80’s songs. It’s such a nice nod to the original series. I loved Craig as a kid. The description you gave him is exactly what I liked about him. He was cute, charming, artistic yet mysterious. It’s no wonder so many of us loved him. I also love what a great friend Hazel was to Paige during Shout.
I also have to say this, I love short haired Ashley. I think because of her face shape and long neck, long hair looks so overpowering, especially since her hair is very thick. So seeing her goth-ish inspired looks make me feel it’s her best hair style and even clothing style. I feel like she could have been maybe a little more alternative rather than goth as well.
Thats funny because I feel the exact opposite about Ashley's hair 🤣. Idk what it was.. but Ashley's short hair made her more annoying, and more irritating to me. Almost like she was trying way too hard to be different, on top of being arrogant, and I hated everything about her style.. especially her hair. It almost made me less empathetic toward her lol. I thought long curly hair, looked much better on her and made her slightly less irritating. But she was also my least favorite character on the show, and everything about her annoyed me.

I thought the gmo episode was so fun because it (to me) showed how differently views on gmos have shifted from the early 2000s to the mid 2010s (when I was in middle school). Apparently it's a cultural thing then though it was really weird to hear them presented in anything other than a negative light
Even though I started watching Degrassi during s11- s13 era, really the first episode I ever watched was late night on teen nick where they were showing classic tng episode reruns and it was of the Ellie self harm one. I remember it vividly, as it wasn’t actually censored or edited, and I saw how truly raw and emotional the show really was compared to its later seasons. The episode really impacted me when I was younger, even helping me get a better understanding of what my older sister was going through at the time. Classic TNG truly was like no other.
It is interesting that you discussed that "mini-epidemic" of young girls beginning to self harm around the Whisper To a Scream airdate. I was 12 when the episode aired and I can absolutely trace the beginnings of my self harm to this episode which I struggled with for the next 8 years.
Unrelated but I started self harming in middle school after hearing about a girl in my school doing it and wondering how it felt. Self harm is this weird thing where idk if it's good to talk about it to kids at all cause it seems to make them want to try. It's good to have representation and mental health awareness but on that particular topic i'm torn.

Regarding the teacher telling the class about the death. That is SOO common it’s crazy. Happened to me to the extent the entire town who had kids in the school district knew
watching these videos is making me realize degrassi's my favorite show, ever. it's so imperfectly perfect in the way only the best teen show can be. watching it as a teenager growing up in a completely different place than the kids portrayed did (unlike canada in many ways, predominantly muslim on top of many other things) its still cemented its status as the biggest part of my of growing up... i love this show
I can’t recall all the cancer episodes, but as someone who has cancer, I wish they would have had a episode where the cancer patient is gaslighted by a doctor or feels abandoned. I mean I have been completely abandoned, but I had many family members who literally never check in on me or even called or anything. And I honestly don’t even know if I consider them family now. I think they dynamic could have really work, especially with high school friends (like finding out who your friends really are type thing). And I’ve definitely have been gaslighted and mistreated by doctors, especially for my age (I’m over 18, but I still could see a 15-17 year old being brushed off, since they are in their “peak” in life). I feel people in general should know that cancer is rough and that one of the roughest parts is having to deal with people who project their problems on you, seeming a bit selfish when you actually hav the hardest part. I also dislike they never act actually actors with disabilities. I mean we get Kimmy, but I mean an actual person who has a medical issue. Like someone blind or deaf (which there could be, but I mean as a main character). I feel Degrassi didn’t do that and it comes off like they never thought of it (at least in a meaningful way).
Yes. I am definitely interested in digging deeper into the way Degrassi deals with disability as we move forward, but I agree with so much of this! It's such a huge blind spot with this show.
I do agree with the casting issues but I don't blame Degrassi specifically since it's normalized in casting to not care about getting actors to play characters like them, even if the character is completely different from the actor but they happen to share one or a few things in common people will say that it should be based on meritocracy and all that stuff or even try to say that "you only ant an actor to be cast for their identity that's pandering" even though many other actors who also share the same identity as the character have to audition for that role (it's not like the casting agents pick some random person off the street most of the time)
Your Craig grief bipolar synopsis was fantastic. My girlfriend is bipolar and was abused by her drug addict mother, but she is still riddled with fear that her mother is going to die and is heartbroken over the thought even though she hates what her mom did to her growing up. She also hates that she's bipolar because it reminds her of her mother, and views herself as less than because of it. Absolutely spot on
The whole baby thing with Spike, I always took it that Spike was a bit hormonal. I also have a special insight to Spike and Emma's dynamic (which doesn't make me like Emma any more mind you.) for Spike just blurting that information to her preteen/teen daughter is that Spike had Emma as a teen and my mom had me as a teen, and that just creates weird boundaries* and I thought it actually shows that pretty well. (*idk how to explain this, like its a mix of mom and daughter and like your mom confiding secrets in you way too much like they would a bff or partner, and where it sounds really bad, and it has some negitive side-effects if I'm being serious, but like it's not "bad mom" bad, and I want that to be clear. No parent does everything perfect and this is one of the side effect of abandoning teen moms to just deal with it and since we've banned abortions in most of the country** for religious fascism I feel like talking about it bluntly is the only fair way to address it.) (**The USA, I was vague cause I rememeber Kat saying she watched in TX, but then remembered that was Pt1)
Despite not being a teen mom or the daughter of one, I understand this completely. My best friend growing up was born right before her mom turned 16. Her mom raised her alone and they had an almost sibling/friendship type relationship layered between the mother/daughter relationship they had. I remember making an offhand comment to her mom one night I was sleeping over and I was like "omg I WISH my mom understood me the way you do, I'm so jealous." And she told me that she cherished the closeness and openness of their relationship, but not to feel too jealous of (best friend) because I had a mom who was grown and married and stable to raise me, while she and (best friend) "grew up together" and she told me about some of the struggles she faced growing and maturing while simultaneously being solely responsible for another human life. It's been 15 years since then and now I'm the age her mom was then and see things so differently. I think there are pros and cons to everything, including the age gap between a parent and child. But the relationship between a young mother and her children can be so beneficial to both because....exactly like my friends mom said, they get to grow together. It adds other elements to the relationship and I think it's one of the more positive aspects of teen pregnancy/motherhood.
I'm so happy to see this retrospective on Degrassi continue. Even to someone who hasn't really watched the show this is still extremely entertaining to watch and just seeing a new video about Degrassi is always a fun event. what happened to paige is exactly what happened to me, including the ages and a lot of what she said leading up to the assault. unfortunately neither I nor my friends were educated on consent, and it took a long time to understand what happened to me and find support. I wish i had seen this episode, but im sure it helped many other girls like me and for that im really grateful.

I am from Germany and got to know degraissi when I was between 18 and 20 years old at a time I felt extremely lonely. Your videos make me look back at the show from another perspective that I really enjoy. I do love the show but don’t think I wanna watch it again in the future and your videos make me rewatch it in another way. Thank you for the time and effort you put into these. It probably takes ages to produce them but I can not wait for the. Next one.

This was a really great video. I've been excited to see you cover more Degrassi after watching your other videos on the series. I've never seen the show, but you cover the major storylines and the characters so well that it's engaging even for people unfamiliar with the series. All of the abuse storylines still came off as quite intense, realistic and raw, which I'm sure was the intent. Manny talking about how she wouldn't be dumped again for being young and proceeding to dress in a way to make her look older or more attractive hit all of the red flags for me. Maybe it wouldn't have affected me if I had watched this series as a teenager, but watching that scene as an adult made me hit my panic button so hard.
Enjoyed this so much. It's crazy how connected I felt to different characters at different times. I definitely agree with 2 and 3 being a peak and I will forever love the burned CD I still have of all the songs I could find and download. You did SO well at walking through the characters, events, and topics, these have been some of my favorite videos on media from my childhood. Well done👏🖤
As a Canadian born in '96 who only occasionally tuned in to DNG from around seasons 8-13 or so, this video series is super fascinating to me and I feel like I am being educated on a cultural touchstone I largely missed out on. 😂
For Ellie, I'm still watching the show (I'm on S7) but overall from where I'm up to Ellie isn't the worst person in the world and neither as a character but she does tend to lack alot of empathy and understanding. I do get these are teens in a particular moment in time and they obviously don't have the access of knowledge to other people's experiences like how we do today but still For Hazel's storyline with Fareeza I've seen criticisms that basically say that she is nothing more then a plot device since we never see her again after this episode so I wanted to bring that point up For Manny's storyline in S3 I actually kind of disliked how she was portrayed for most of it. Your explanation here does give it more sense but the way she was filmed when in very revealing outfits (especially that shot of her thong from behind) creeped me out and it felt like they were (unintentionally) sexualizing her up until they have her bring up the misogyny she does face and even have it affect future events for her Also that deleted scene with Hazel telling Paige she wouldn't understand her experiences should have been kept in the episode
The criticisms of Fareeza are totally valid imo. For both she and Hazel, their heritage and religions were treated like an issue of the week rather than a real part of their character moving forward (especially poor Fareeza, who disappears forever) and I should have mentioned that tbh! Thanks for bringing it up here! And yeah that Hazel line is so good! But I can't even imagine how it would have been taken at the time

I know this video is a year old but I was listening to it while working and I have to comment on how you worded Craig's behavior in terms of being associated with grieving over his father. My mother was an abusive addict who overdosed before the age of 50. When I was growing up, I would wish that she would die all the time. We had a horrible relationship but even nearly ten years down the line, I still grieve her loss terribly and hate myself occasionally for it. rewatching Craig's plot truly helped me identify my own feelings of being torn between the sadness of losing a parent and the freedom from their abusive control. But you still feel empty. You still feel like something is missing-- even if that thing hurt you your whole life-- and things will never be the same.

It’s interesting Billy Ray Cyrus was on this show, because he was in Canada at the time filming his show “Doc”. It was also the show Miley started her acting career. But it is interesting that he was on a Canadian show aimed at Canadians (even though Drake’s real life dad is from Memphis, TN), because I don’t see many country-esqe people in Canada (though there are, I’d likely say from Alberta, since it’s got a similar land and a few actors I know from there have played Southern American roles, especially Steven Ogg in The Waking Dead).
I saw his cameo as an American living in Canada who leaned on the Southern aspect to lure in paying Canadian customers who most likely haven't been down south

firstly, kudos to you for splicing in the correction of "Dean"'s name from "Dylan". I would have just superimposed it on the screen lol I'm so lazy. But also, while Emma is annoying AF, Weird Science is one of my favorite episodes because it actually does show character growth for her. She learns things that it's important for kids to learn: basically that humans are complicated and thus you can't make assumptions about them. This was on two levels: firstly, the somewhat superficial one of her science project (at first getting mad and *blaming* her friends for unavoidable biological responses to diet 🤣 then using the unexpected consequences to her advantage by improvising a newn spin on the project) and secondly, that her mom and Archie genuinely love each other and he isn't in reality treating her any differently than he would if he wasn't dating her mom, and she should just let him be nice to her.

I like that you talk about how accidents will happen was aired on the N in the US. There was always a part of the show I felt like I didn’t catch. Like in Secrets when Emma and manny are arguing about Emma going to the ravine with Jay and Emma says “… but I’m not getting pregnant..” and Manny is like “why are you trying to hurt me?” When I saw that the first time I was like “… manny was pregnant?? Did I miss something?” Lol Thanks to old school RU-vid and message boards I found the episode online and was able to watch it. It was such a big deal years later when “every every episode ever” and the US let it air on tv.
Late late response I know but I'm rewatching these videos again because their vids on Degrassi are that phenomenal, basically comfort watches. While I have more mixed opinions on Degrassi (I say I both unironically and ironically enjoy the show. It definitely has its merits and strengths but I also made fun at the more melodramatic & tropey aspects and plots of the series but regardless of if it was intentional or not it sure gave me reactions) Kat's love for the series and analysis are absolutely top notch. Great story and character analysis as well as historical contexualization added with insights into their own life makes this series so rewatchable
