New rider here, I recently replaced the front wheel bearings on my 1st bike thanks to the help of this video. I used a homemade press like you showed with washers on a threaded rod, worked like a charm. I've since gone down a rabbit hole of watching your videos, solid channel content keep up the awesome work!

I watched you last video on removing the wheel bearing using metal rod to knock them out, and I changed bearings on my triumph using that method , and now I was stuck on 1982 Honda CBX550 as these are bit more difficult to get out, saw your new gadget sealey AK716 how easy it was to remove the bearing, so I paused the video ordered a set from Amazon, so tomorrow i will be able to do the job. It's all about knowing what tools to use, without watching your video I would have never know , Big thank you and keep up the good work.

Hi Peter, am glad that the second video gave you a solution, it's pretty easy to knock bearings out gently, if you can get to the back of them, but it's always more gratifying to pull them out with a proper tool if you can afford it... good luck with it, hope it goes well for you!

Thank you very much!! That is my job for this weekend. Got the bearing puller set and bearings hopefully arriving before then. I just have to forage for the bits to assemble that press dooda thingiemabobs. :) I was also going to change fork oil but I'm doing it the lazy way, unscrewing the top and dumping it out with the all the dampening rod assembly still intact. I hope I can get away with it because I don't have a sharpened broom handle to hold the cartridge assembly in place and I have no help, as usual.... @glaucolorenzetti1343
@glaucolorenzetti1343 5 лет назад
Del I love your work and you have been a great inspiration to me for years. I am a Suzuki owner as well. Please allow me to say that if you use a socket on the edge of the rim to push in the second bearing the pressure might push back the first one through the spacer. The second tool you showed works much better in keeping the first bearing seated in its place, I use one like that plus old bearings (that I slotted so they don't get stuck) to press on both the races at the same time.
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 5 лет назад
That would only be a problem if you wound it down to hard, as you saw in the video, you should be able to turn the spanner with one finger almost as you wind it in, the minute it goes tight, stop dead... and you can tell that both bearings are at the same correct depth cos the rubber seals push in dead flush, and also the spacer tube can be moved with your finger, also if you pull both bearings in that the same time with matching discs, then you can still squeeze them too tight, and if one bearing binds more than the other, you can pull them in unevenly, the socket works fine, just go steady nipping it in... thanks for your input Glauco, always much appreciated, ride safe, Del
@glaucolorenzetti1343
@glaucolorenzetti1343 5 лет назад
@@Moonfleet41 thanks a lot for your answer Del. Just a clarification, when I said both races I intended both inner and outer race of the first bearing only, so that the first bearing doesn't move and no excessive pressure can be applied to the inner race. Looking forward to your next videos.

The idea of freezing machined metal and then smacking them into a hole with a hammer has never sat easily with me. *goeslookingforthreadedbar*... :o)
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 5 лет назад
Too right my friend, not just the concept of smacking them in, but dropping freezing cold metal in to a red hot hole, that's gonna case harden it in a moment making it brittle surely, like quenching hot metal in water... room temperature, then just press them in gently, works every time!

A video showing the correct way to install oil/grease seals and the reasoning how the lip/spring on the seal keeps the grease in and the dust out would be helpful to some.Most manuals don't show the fine details of which way the seal should be installed.
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 5 лет назад
As an absolute rule all bearing seals (if you examine them) have a 'closed' side and an 'open' side, it may visually vary in looks, but no matter what, one side will always look slightly open and the other sealed, they always fit with the open side facing inwards to keep the grease in and then the outside sealed face to keep the dust out... it's a general rule for all oil seals buddy
@jamesweber4938
@jamesweber4938 5 лет назад
You and I know both know which way an oil seal is fitted but how many people watching the video know the "general rule" ?
@Moonfleet41

@@jamesweber4938 Yeah, Point taken, i always have to strike a balance between sharing useful information, and not patronising,,..! not an easy balance aye.!
@jamesweber4938
@jamesweber4938 5 лет назад
Definitely not an easy balance. I will be removing the back wheel on my 1300 Yamaha Midnight Star today to replace the needle roller bearing in the belt drive pulley that is prone to failure. When the bearing fails it "welds" itself to the axle. Then you have to cut the axle to get it out. Very poor design.
@Volvi373
@Volvi373 5 лет назад
Thought you might have checked the old bearings to see what condition they were in and if knackered, but guess you decided to change all bearings no matter their condition.Guess that way you know you never have to re-visit them. But then one always does with any tyre change. Great useful vid. Cheers.

Exactly that Volvi, whether these small consumables are actually worn out or not, it doesn't hurt to pop a new set in so you know how old ALL of the consumables are on the bike going forward... better the devil you know aye.! now i know ill get years and years of service from all of it without worry.

Definitely invest in the right tool instead of the emergency room (don't ask).

Hi del, im putting in new wheel bearings, the bearings should be flush(tight) against the spacer yes? Holding it in place? The spacer shouldnt be moving around or wiggling around right? It should be held in place by the bearings? (05 fz6) I did it this way, but noticed that if the bearings are pressing against the spacer, the bearings arent actually rotating freely and take a fair bit of effort to get them to move by my fingers, did I do it correctly??? Is this normal?

Snug against the spacer tube, but not tight so it's jammed, and the race should rotate by hand though the action may be firm not slack..

I have a 2008 GSF1250 SA. The manual says to install the right wheel bearing then the spacer followed by the left bearing, leaving "clearance" between the spacer and the left bearing. The spacer is longer than the distance between the bearing seats. I obviously installed them wrong because the spacer was wedged in between. So for my second go, how much "clearance" is appropriate? and I'm assuming the proper way is to keep checking the clearance as the bearing gets close? Or is there a depth measurement?

"Clearance" just means to NOT wedge the spacer tube solid.. press the second bearing in gently, stop once you feel it seat, and then the tube should be able to shift under light pressure so it can line up with the axle... to my knowledge there is not measurement !

Any thoughts on the exhaust yet. I wonder what it would sound like straight pipe.
