FZR600 Genesis Clutch all done and completed with the clutch case gasket completed as you demonstrated. No leaks. I did buy a hole punch set to do the holes, made life easier. Thanks again for the top tip from your experience.

Del, after I got out of the military I worked for a summer as an assistant mechanic for a carnival. I can't tell you how many of those gaskets we made. We used proper gasket material and high temp silicon. Finally, you've made a simple skills vid that I already knew how to do..😀😎

Hi Rich, that was the whole point of the simple skills videos, not only to share the stuff that we know, but to provoke a few of our viewers, like yourself, to share their tips and ideas too - and that sounds like a fun job too!

Hi When I make a gasket it is in a similar way, the only difference is I cut the holes first and drop screws in to the holes. This helps stops the gasket sliding or wrinkling. I do this with a tool I made god only knows how long ago. Its a punch of sorts using 3 short pieces of round bar about 100mm long and 10mm dia with 8mm 10mm and 12mm ball bearing welded to one end for different size holes. Hitting it with a light blow in the centre of each hole covered with the gasket paper and the ball will shear the paper as you do with the hammer on the edge leaving a perfect cut hole. It is also useful where there maybe a tight corner on the edge of the casing where a even ball peen hammer would find it difficult to get a nice clean cut unless its very small one.

Delboy! I need a bit of advice! I came off my street triple a couple days ago (very minor, no bruises!) but the bike's a little worse for wear, the bottom of the cam chain cover scraped along the ground, damaged one of the screws and now it's seeping oil from the damaged area (oh dear) I'm going to put a new gasket on there, replace the damaged bolt and see if that's enough to sort it out, but failing that, will a new OEM cam chain cover slap straight on and be happy, or do you think I'm in for a world of hurt? Thanks for all your amazing content, dude!

Great video. Takes me back to the sixties when I would often "tap out" a gasket. Anything from carburettors to primary chain cases. Didn't have any fancy blue stuff though. Instead it was heavy grease that kept the brown paper bag/cardboard in place. Worked every time.
@geoffhalsey2184
@geoffhalsey2184 6 лет назад
Not made a gasket in a long time. I assume this Blue Hylomar is superior to the Red and Gold Hermetite used to use back in the 70's and 80's when bikes/cars were less reliable? I'll definitely get some, as my ageing ST1100 clutch is going to need some TLC before long. Honda wants £12.30p just for the cover gasket alone, cheeky buggers. Great tip with the grease.

Nice! Any idea where you can get actual gasket material, by the sheet or something? I have to admit I would feel a lot more comfortable with a small plastic or rubber mallet, rather than any metal hammer of any size or weight. Other than that, yet ANOTHER brilliant video!
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 6 лет назад
Hi Jeff, you can buy gasket card from any decent motor factors, and you need a metal hammer to cut the card, a rubber one will just bounce off and probably a nylon one too, give it a try and you'll see... if you're not happy with the small toffee hammer, then try a hard roller, the kind you get from the DIY store...
@CajunGreenMan
@CajunGreenMan 6 лет назад
SO frustrating! I asked about making my own gaskets on a Facebook forum of thousands of bikers over a year ago, and NO ONE had any idea how. You just popped out an easy, cheap method like it was nothing! Wish I had known about your channel the day I bought my first street bike about 3 or 4 years ago! I've found some gasket material available at several auto parts stores. And I'll try all kinds of hammers to see which works best for me. Thanks so much! AGAIN!! FYI, I watched one video today that used hollow punches to cut the holes. Think I'll test that also. Cheers!

Cereal box card is absolutely fine, it's been used for gaskets for generations.. just know the difference between a critical gasket and a secondary gasket! Cylinder heads, base gaskets, valve cover gaskets, anything involving pressure.. buy the real ones.. but side casings, perfectly fine to make one using regular ordinary card !

Never use goo sealants unless I really have to, for the reasons said. Much better to use gasket material paper and fit it dry. Seen to many engines covered in red and blue goo to be confortable. Bodgers tool.

Hi Kev, I have to say that on modern new engines, you're dead right.. the mating surfaces are razor sharp perfect and a dry gasket it all you need... perhaps I could have made mention of that, but have spent so many years working on old engines, a lot on diesels as well, and things like Hylomar are essential as a dry gasket just don't cut it... was always why I made it clear to use a tiny amount and let it dry as I too have seen this slathered all over the place where it ends up floating around in the oil and bunging up the strainer!

Oh the good old days ..and if you're desperate and dont have blue use red(not) and buy a jackhammer to get it off next time !!! Been there !! 👍☮❤peas n loaf to ya both❤ Just to be clear Blue for everything including fuel. Red water ..hot water...👍👍

springy 2112 - cheers buddy, good point well made, always used to use the red stuff for coolant leaks, especially on flat faced unions... I did my formal training on Gardener marine engines (which is what they used in London buses), big 9litre straight six and they're covered in those stupid joints, which like to leak about every 6 weeks!... so after a few years, they become like Aunt Maud after a night on the pop!! - leaking, smelly and obnoxious - ho hum! happy days....

I remember my dad using cereal box to make gaskets .... thought he was being a cheap ass .... he was , but ..... Is this an `Emergency` trick ? or an `in place of` a bought gasket trick ? Cool either way round Del. No such thing as a cheap Harley gasket so I`ll file this in the brain library.

Emergency i guess in times of need, its a great rescue.. but like you say.. Harley gaskets are darned expensive.. so why pay with you can make them..!

Hello, This maybe a daft question but do you happen to know if it's fuel (petrol) resistant? Thanks
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 6 лет назад
Oh my word, hi buddy, welcome back, been ages since we heard from you, I remember making a video in response to a question you asked about 5yrs ago, has it really been that long - we hope you're well?! Yes indeed, this is oil proof, but there are more specific sealants for petrol, which wold work better!
@rwrestores

Still watching every video buddy.... Thanks for your reply... I can't believe its been that long already where does the time go. That video was about loosening off a rounded nut / bolt which I've used many many many times since. I'V recently invested in the sockets that do the hard work for you based on you tool review.... Looking forward to the completion of the fighter build... Take care Buddy

My Dad was a bus fitter too - did his apprenticeship with Provincial in Fareham and became foreman for Crosville in Wrexham after the war. He showed me that trick when I had my old Anglia back in '73. Nice one, Del. Great demo. Useful reminder. That'll help lots of us. Glory be to Hylomar! Safe roads. 👍

Ha ha, comment of the day.. ""Glory be to Hylomar! "" Great to hear your Dad was in the industry too.. i trained back in 1989, worked at Palmers Green and Tottenham garages for LRT (leaside) Happy days, simple times and a London that was a lot less busy and dangerous than it is today..
