First of the jobs to make the Iron "a bit more me", replaced the OE factory seat with a LePera 'Bare Bones' seat, and swaped out the rediculous 13" rear shocks for some 'Progressive Suspension' 11's ...took a total of 4 inches out of the ride height, i think we can say we.Slaaamed it baby..!

Hello mate, thank for your kind comments, the Harley has split indicators, they double and tail and brake lights as well as indicators....the factory use the same setup on the Nightster too.. thanks for watching. take care, Del.

Hi there, as far as I can make out the 13" shocks only come on the Euro market 883 Irons- it seems the US bikes have 11" shocks as standard, which goes to show it must be some kind of Euro legislation thing - thanks for watching, take care, Del

Hi there, thank you for your kind comments, the gloves are "Richa Custom Gloves" and cost (here in the UK £49, about $79 US), they are armoured in the knuckles for protection.. im sure you can buy them on the internet, just google the name... take care.. Del.

Hi mate, thanks for your kind comments, the Gloves are by "Richa" and i think the model is just called "Cruiser gloves", cost about £50, and no, they are really a summer glove, not much lining and short to the wrist... (you can use Rigger gloves form a tools shop, and get bige ones so you can wear wolly gloves under them in winter.. then you get the light tan look...

@BenalexH Hi Ben, thanks for watching buddy, like i said in the video, i got the seat second hand and almost unused from a private eBay seller, but it is a standard 'LePera Bare Bones', and can be bought from all manner of suppliers, from Halrey dealers, to the internet, and they cost from about £200 downwards. if you have a surf round eBay im sure you will find many to choose from. thanks again, take care. Del.

@wildkatze69 Hi mate, thanks for your kind comments, and yeah, dont go buying the 48 seat, all Harley seats have inferior foam compared to the LePera memory foam, also they use thick genuine Naughide to cover them which is rubbery and elastic..this, with the better foam, yields more and stays comfy for a lot longer distance on long rides..also the steel base is ten tiems better quality than the factory items... thanks again buddy, and ride safe. Del.

Hi Paul. The seat WAS an L-006, and it fit the bike perfectly, the item was labeled as such on the base. maybe they are universal in fittings, but just a different shape on top.. thanks for watching mate, take care, Del.

@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 12 лет назад
Hi Dave, no the ride is not that bad..but all things can be inproved..and the shocks i used on the Iron i had were "Progressive Suspension" model "412" and they were a lot better... the damping is much better quality, more supple and makes the bike steadier in bends... also once the bike is lowered the suspension has less travel up and down, (only an inch), so can become harsher and more rigid...the PS shocks give you back the smoothness over a shorter travel range and are well worth the money.

Hi Andrew, thanks mate, you are very kind, i think its important to share the things we know, what ever they may be, with our fellow bikers if they can in any way benefit from it, that way we expand the brotherhood of biking keep, each other safe, and save a few shekels at the same time.. thanks again for your kind comments mate.. ride safe. Del.

@Wi66pro Hi Paul. The shocks i used are the 412 with heavy duty spring, they sit "off the bike at 11" centre to centre, and now they have settled they sit with the bike upright and no load, 10,3/4" and never bottom, with me on the bike they ride at 10" and i use them on the top preload setting (and im 13 stone) . if i twist them down to lowest preload them bump down hard on them the frame hits the belt guard, but there is a warning and advice to bend the guard down, in the box they come with..

You're most welcome mate, and thanks for your very kind comments, you will absolutly LOVE the iron, they are the exact right balance of looks and durability, i cant be bothered with polishing bikes, its a muggs game... and the black finish on these just washes off once a week.. perfect... cheers mate, and takecare.. Hey mate, thank you for your kind comments - I did eventually sell my Iron as you'll see as you go through the vids, but Penny had a 1200 Sportster which is in a lot of the vids, which she's now sold and bought, as you'll also see, a 2010 Black Iron! LOL! ... you can be twins! ... Enjoy the vids, mate, cheers, Del
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 13 лет назад
@Chipitin4birdie yeah chip, i was going to make a whole big thing about that, the 006 is indeed designed for the sportster up to 06, and the only difference is that the seat i have is 5" shorter and needs a hole at the front, the regular sportsters dont seem to have this hole, so LePera make a longer seat to fit the only available bolt hole that is further back....HOWEVER... the Iron, Nighters and 48 all have the "Bobbed" rear fender, and this fender has the hole at the front, so the 006 fits
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 13 лет назад
@Chipitin4birdie Yup, measured from hole centre to hole centre 11" or 280mm, they are LOW... and like i said, you will need them on the top preload setting or at best the next one down, any lower and you will have to bend the belt guard down a bit to clear the frame.. which indicates they ride LOWER on the road than the 10" strut, and you dont get a screwed back, they move no more than 1" up and down, but its a quality, superbly damped movement, and very comfortable even with the bare Bones seat

@AntiheroBreakz Hi there, yes i did use that seat, and there are some very subtle differences to each bike that mean the mount points need to be a bit longer or shorter ect... so go with the dealers advice, the seat will be the same style, and if the seat is wrong, and he advised it, then its on him to get you the right one... as long as its a Bare Bones seat, then it will look exactly the same once it is fitted.. the code numbers just pertain to the mounting holes..good luck and ride safe. Del.

@MrMasterMiller Hi Keith. Thanks for watching the video fellah, and im glad you're getting a Harley as just 19.... thats kewl,, Im 6ft in me socks, and have no problem with the mid mount controls, the forwards give a very different ride feel and some tall people dont like it, its all down to personal choice, the "48" has forwards, maybe try a test ride on one at your local dealer first before buying a very expensive conversion kit, and if you like them forward, then go for it. regards, Del,

both 11 and 11.5 feel the same as you can adjust out that small amount of difference wit hte preload...the springs are softer and more forgiving, and the damping it better....plus they inprove with miles once the sticksion settles down..

@Moonfleet41 12 лет назад
Hi buddy, sorry to not be clear, its easy to get them confused.. right;- first look at the bottom mount on the shock.."it sits to one side"..orientate it so the mount sits to the outside (farthest away from the bike), fit the insert through the bottom loop from the outside, then shove the bolt through it, and the thick spacer goes inside (between the shock and the swing arm)... have a go at that, and if you are still confused, ill do you a quick video when i can. hope that helps, Del.
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 11 лет назад
NOT here in the UK mate, they come 13" from the dealership, and nobody changed them, they are sent over that way for UK spec..only the '883 Low' comes with 11" shocks here. !

Yes indeed, we regularly would take long days out with a few hours in the saddle and I have to say it was better than the factory seat ...the foam used is far superior to the OEM offering as it is progressive memory foam and designed to prevent hot spots and pressure points & the covering, being Naughide, is a clever stretchy vinyl which allows the foam to do it's work...plus the steel base holds it all in shape & supports it all so nothing moves about, truly is a superior product... cheers Del

No Mark, the belt sits at almost centre to centre level as standard...so to lower it or raise it, as long as its not too much will not overstretch the belt....i checked the tension after doing it, and it was bang on....good point to remember though...well said... cheers, Del.

Sorry mate, made this video ages ago, can't be absolutely sure off the top of my head, but grab a 3/4 and a 7/8 and you'll probably be fine... sorry, I'd have to check to be sure (not near the garage right now).... good luck, Del
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 12 лет назад
@nordtiger Hi there, Yes i did, checked it and it was fine. The needs to be quite tight compared to a chain, only 3/4 to 1 inch of deflection at the sight hole on the bottom belt guard, many riders run them too loose, so check you have not backed it off too much, the belt actually loosens off as you lower it below the horizontal, if your belt is old, then make sure you check it every month as they stretch a lot with age.

Hi mate, Progressive Suspension is recommended by Harley... and Riders of Bridgwater are a Harley main agent, so they are a product, much like Ohlins, that whilst aftermarket are actually better than the factory rubbish... they are very good quality...

Well done buddy, glad you got stuck in there yourself...makes your bike hobby all the richer.. With the PS shocks, they may still cause the betl guard to touch the frame spar at the front...if so, just bend the guard down a little bit,. only needs about 1/4 inch... good luck and thanks for watching, take care, Del.

Hi there Yannou....yes you can fit the 03-06 seat like mine to any sportster, the only difference is that you may not have the hole to locate the rear bolt...if not, then you can just drill a hole on your fender where the bolt goes through, (plus make a little slot just like the existing hole the factory put further back)... that will work fine and give a lovely ride plus lower position too as the foam is really top quality....i hope that helps, good luck and let me know if you ghet stuck. Del.

They were a pair of the old Screaming Eagle slip ons from the late 90's, but today you can get the same sound from V&H short shots...and no, no remap needed if you just fit the mufflers only and leave the air filter alone..but as i had the stage one filter i had to buy a SE Pro tuner, and got the dealer to set it up... .good luck, Del.

Hi there, the gaiters are for looks only - underneath them there are regular fork seals and dust caps just like every other Harley! ... It's perfectly ok to remove them, you can either do this by dropping the fork legs out and slipping them off the top (if you want to retain them for later re-fitment) or just carefully slice them out with a Stanley knife, hope that helps, Cheers, Del

Suggestion, before and after side by side. This video was truly amazing, everything you said about the contour and shape of the bike leading to and then including the seat... 100% spot on, and then the distance of travel for the rear fender.... I swear it kills me everytime I look at my stock bike. This was an amazing video. As someone that has always loved the shape and the agility of the sportster, and it's ability to change into whatever you want it to be... This video was a great help! Thank you!

Hey there matey.... we bought the Progressive Suspension shocks for both bikes from the guys at "Riders of Bridgwater", simply a Harley dealer with the right attitude, did it all over the telephone, paid with my card, and they sent them next day delivery... they even offered to swap them for longer ones if i fitted them and found them too low.. also the price was veyr competative, i seem to remember they cost about £250 a set... not bad for the amazing improvement they gave, good luck, Del.

@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 13 лет назад
@mrrshotshot It's 13" from factory, and 11" with the new shocks. It depends if your passenger is very light, then maybe, but it would more than likely bottom out, the shocks come with a warning to "bend the belt guard a bit if it touches", s it is pretty much on the limit. HOWEVER. if you talk to Progressive Suspension direct, ask them if they offer a model with a stiffer spring, mine are the model "412", im sure they will do a beefier one that offeres the same low ride height, good luck buddy.

My shovel dropped about 2” in the rear when I put a round swing arm on it. It looked very cool, but I couldn’t get a jack under it (like yours) and it dragged hard parts everywhere. I lifted it back up with new shocks after a week. Hope your ride goes better.

Hi mate, i went for the11" because it looked best, and didnt ground or scrape anywhere... i did lift the forks out of the clamps by half inch, and it sat perfectly flat with the frame rails totally parallel to the ground.. they are back end high form the factory... i did run them on highest preload, and never took a pillion... so if you are going to, or are heavier then me (180lb's) then use the 11.5.... hope that helps buddy.... and the plate was 7x5" cheers, Del
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 13 лет назад
@Chipitin4birdie Not used the V&H, but they are good, i have the Screaming Eagle fueler remap, and the Wife's bike uses the "Kytech" as hers is a 1200 conversion..... all three work fine, the Kytech is self fit and setup, wheras the SE needs the dealers laptop to remap, but what ever you do, use some kind of fueller, they are essential to enrich the mixture when you increase air flow.. once fitted with the heavy breather you'll notice a massive punch in low end torque and it will run cooler too,
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 13 лет назад
@memumbling Erm i have to admit, i havent, i presumed they would just clean off with some "Denim paint cleaner" i got free from Harley, then i tried some mineral spirit, and nope, they're wear marks made in the paint by the seat, and also the black paint that has been covered is darker than the paint that was exposed,(probably faded a bit).... In any normal paint situiation i would have just buffed it out with some T-cut... but its that daft "Denim" rubbish ill have to repaint it another time.!

Hi buddy,that question made me smile and proves,once again,that those of us who know about mechanical things must never take it for granted that others do,so to answer your question,NO,the rear suspension units are modular & completely safe to remove just using a socket wrench.When you take the weight of the bike off them,they extend to a point then stop against a solid steel lock peg,they can only be dismantled using specialist tools & knowledge,so you can take them off in confidence,Cheers Del

Hi Robert, 230 is about 16 stone, so i would say that the 11" shocks would need to be pretty heavily sprung, there is only 1.5inches of travel with 11" shocks, so not much soakup, and if you check how much yours currently drop when you sit on it, you'll be able to see if you have any left for bumps....if it drops tow inches now, then you'll bottom our all the time...if you were a light lad like say 150lb's then you would be fine, but its just how much drop you need at your weight..
@Moonfleet41

Hi Matt, glad you mentioned this because the 11" shocks are way too low for any form of pillion rider, they are strictly solo only, I am 13 stone & even on the highest setting I managed to bottom them on pot holes, if I were you carrying a pillion will mean at 11.5" & try & get away with max pre-load or even the 12's (which is still an inch lower as they are 13" standard)..good luck, chap, hope that helps, Del

@Moonfleet41 11 лет назад
Hi mate, that's a common question and it all depends on the weight of you and the pillion - if you both are less than 16stone combined then you are good to go! But much more than that and you'll bottom on bumps... but even then, if you take it easy and use all the pre-load you should be fine up to about 18stone combined... Great choice of bike, Cheers Del
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 13 лет назад
@Chipitin4birdie Your welcome buddy, i almost bought the Biltwell struts, but its a waste money, first they look flimsy compared to the stumpy fat shocks, and also, the shocks ride at 10" once you park your weight on the bike. If you want the bike even lower then just twist the preloader down to minimum, and they ride at 9" lol.. so low in fact that the belt guard hits the frame ha ha. there is even a tip in the instructions to bend the guard if you need to, so struts are BS, go for the shocks.
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 11 лет назад
You can fit your hand in there if you jack the bike up so the back wheel drops down a bit....if its still to close, just drop the lower mounts off and let the swing arm lower enough to allow access... ride safe buddy.. Del.

The UK models comes with 13" rear shocks but in US they are 11 3/4" which is the same as the standard shock that comes with 48. I have changed my 2017 883 shock with the 48's shock and it looks good and rides fine. I am planning to put the 2016 48 solo seat as well.

@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 12 лет назад
@durhamevans Hi mate. NO, is the simple answer... you have to take the weight off the back wheel so you can take the old shocks off, even if you go one at a time, they are different lengths so you'll still need to get the back wheel up off the ground... If you dont have a lift, then its still quite easy to get the back up.. Just poke a trolley jack under the right hand side just by the swing arm pivot, and jack it against its side stand, that will lift the back off and be quite stable too..

+Moonfleet41 Just dropped my bike off at Harley for the 1000k mile maintance work. I am considering Bassani FirePower Radial Sweeper exhaust system - Any thoughts? I know 883c is not very beefy but - I know there has got to be something out there that make it rumble deep and throaty - It is my second 883 I had stage I and Streamin Eagles that one. I live in Texas and loud pipes rule! I', ready to make this new one my own. Any advice is very much appreciated.

+Judy Riels HI Judy, The Bassani pipes are real top draw quality, and any Harley deserves the best in accessories right?.. they will certainly be loud, and they have a very distinctive sound of thier own, check out this video comparing Bassani, with Vance & Hines and a Thunderheader.... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Fa203SHXA6Y.html We have a lot of viewers from Texas, and never a more warm and friendly bunch could we wish to meet, we hope to come over for a Vacation in the US next year if life and commitments allow, and may go to one of the big natinal shows like Daytona or Sturgis, just a loose plan for now, but fingers crossed.. Thanks for watching the videos, great to know they can help.. all the best.. Del.

+Moonfleet41 I would choose Sturgis over Daytona. I love the beach and go to South Florida several times a year, but for bike vacations -Montana, Wyoming and the Dakotas are a bike lovers dream. The rides in the Mountains, especially Needles Highway are far better than Daytona! Daytona - park and walk, very crowded and not really safe to ride. Sturgis-beautiful rides, and the rally on Main Street has everthing you expect out of a rally!

+Ms. Judy Thanks Judy, thats valuable information, and right for us, because above all else, it HAS to be about the ride right.?

I thought the american irons had 11' shocks, 13' were for Europe, something to do with placement of the number plate over here?

Thnaks buddy, you are very kind, its good to make a bike the weay you want it... and if you buiy an Iron, you wont regret it, they are an excellent base bike to make yours... ride safe mate.. Del.

@kennroxx Its really comfortable mate, its a premium quality seat, the base is made from 14 guage steel, covered under with soft carpet to protect it, and the 'fit' is perfect, ... but more than anything, it has a really odd foam, its squidy like memory foam, firm and supportive yet never is it harsh, also the Naughide stretches and moulds to your shape so there is no resistance in it, all round its ten times better than any Harley seat ive ever sat on... go for it ken, you wont regret it.

Hi Jackson - firstly congratulations on the very finest of bike, I know you're gonna love it! You may indeed find that slamming the back end a full 2" could lead to some rubbing or at least bottoming out on bumps if carrying 2 full sized adults - it's just a case of trial and error, but provided you are about 180lbs (13stone) & your pillion no more than 10stone you should get away with it if you ride steady - also depends on the shocks you go for or maybe even blocks... Thanks Del

Hi Dale, it certainly should do buddy, as long as the back fender doesn't have the ECU mounted on the fender then you should be ok....the only thing stopping it would be if the fender had the huge hole under the seat like on the 883L, but i think all the bobbed fender bikes have it mounted elsewhere, so the Nightster, 48 and iron models should all be fine for the 006....Just take off your factory seat and check for the forward screw hole, if its there, then your good to go buddy, take care, Del.

Hi mate, you are 2" taller than me & I know what you mean...the Iron is perfect as the power is plenty if you Stage1 tune it &you can always convert it to 1200 later (like Penny did) - the trick will be to modify it with the right pegs & bars, you'll need forward pegs for certain & either some Biltwell Keystone bars for the forward reach or some mini-apes from the Nightster & while I mention it, you could check the Nightster out first, test ride a few & see what you think! Good luck, Del

@MrMasterMiller Absolutely the same buddy, the core bike under every sportster is exactly the same bike, all they change is the anciliary parts, so YES, if you buy an 883 iron, and convert to the forward pegs, it will feel just like the 48 (the seat is thicker, but you can fit any seat you like, my LePera is perfect, also, you will like the 70MPG you get from the 883, and 130 miles from brim to reserve, but before you buy the forwards. ride for a bit on the mid pegs.. i love mine, Cheers, Del.

@p8rdm Hi RIK, the shocks are "Progressive Suspension Model 412" ... and NO, the number plate is completely illegal..! but its been on there for a year, and ive never had a single issue, including riding in front of Police cars from time to time, i have the factory legal garage door sized plate, and at worst its a Defect rectification notice.! live your life aye...;-)

Hi DelThanks for all your tips and help I have a 2015 Iron and was wondering what pipes you had on this bike in the video sound cool
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 8 лет назад
+peter kane Hi mate, the pipes on this bike were Screamin' Eagle slip ons... but the good news is, it's not the pipes that make the noise, it's the engine! Open up any Harley and they sound awesome... Vance & Hines Short Shots with no baffles or you can even de-baffle the standard silencers and will sound just as awesome and we've a video on how to do that if you need it !

+Moonfleet41 Hi Del I have just purchased a Mustang vintage sole seat, a set of 412 cruiser shocks a K&N filter and it has S E street cannons slip ons already so I suppose its time to ride. Thanks for the reply

Hi Sammy... i think you have stumbled across the old quandary, a cheap torque wrench will be crap and cause you problems, so buy a good one and you wont end up regretting it.. thanks for the Discovery comment, we were asked about a year ago to supply some videos for the discovery website, and they posted about a dozen of them which got us a huge kick forwards and made us loads more new subs and publicity...but as for a show, no news so far... thanks again mate, and thanks for your support. Del.

Sorry wasnt clear there mate. "lifting the forks".... can also be described as "dropping the clamps".... just loosten off the top and bottom pinch bolts on one side of the fork clamp (tripple tree, top an bottom yoke, what ever you call it)...and allow the fork tube to rise out of the top clamp about half inch....then do the same the other side, clamp it all up tight and hey prestow you have lowered the front, and the little bit of fork poking out the top hardly notices...and its free too..Del.

Ayup mate, im just a bit taller than that, shade under 6ft, but i found if you set up the sportster right they are fine. you can use the Biltwell bars that give you loads longer reach, and fit a flat seat that you can slide back a bit on like the LePera bare bones (tons more comfy too), and of course use the forward controls..so once you do all that, the bike will fit you fine.. you can go another way and fit flat track bars and an XR seat, that makes it higher which will work too. good luck Del

Your videos are my go to, please keep it up and thanks in advance! I ride a 2013 Iron, and I'm thinking of going with progressives 444's, I like the stock height as it looks a bit slammed, but its a harsh ride. So if I installed 12" shocks with a lowering block kit do you suppose I will get that slammed look with the better comfort and performance combo? Or do you suggest I stick with the progressive 11" for the same height without the lowering blocks? Also is there an overall difference between 11" and 11.5" shocks in terms of height and comfort? Sorry for my life story. Thanks again!!
@Moonfleet41
@Moonfleet41 8 лет назад
+Turk Shalhoub Hi Turk, no mate, you ask a very good question indeed, and a very relevant one... I would most certainly go for a long shock with a lowering block as the longer the shock then the more supple absorbsion it provides... and when all you do is shift the lower mount point backwards an inch it retains all of that smooth ride quality... but the bike is lower..... whereas the 11" shock being so much shorter has to be a lot stiffer to prevent 'bottoming out', so is horribly harsh on bumpy roads... so lower shocks present a real trade off and not one you need to make ! So if it was my bike I would definitely just slap a set of blocks in, you could even do that on your factory shocks if you wanted to save money, all the best, Del

+Moonfleet41 Thanks for the quick reply, one more thing, with the 12" and lowered, do you think I'm ok with 2up? my wife rides with me every now and then and we had no problems with the 11" stocks, thoughts? Thanks again!
