@Snork Town No I didnt upgrade the power supply. You need to look for CPU models that end with the letter S, ie 3570S. These S variant of CPUs are lower power designed for PCs like this. Upgrade the ram, it takes very little power and a 50w GPU should not be an issue.

I am assuming by "BIG BOX" you mean a regular sized 660 and not a small form factor one. On the regular 660, you can add a full sized graphics card. My recommendation would be an RX 6600 XT at most, or, a step down and go with a GTX 1660s. The main issue you will run into isn't so much the CPU or GPU, but rather the speed of the ram, the speed of the PCIE lane, and chipset. The best 1155 CPU that board will take is the Xeon E3-1290v2 which clocks slightly higher than the 3770k if you wanna spend the money.. myself though, I'd go with a 3770. I did some testing with the aforementioned Xeon/RX 6600 XT combo to see what kind of frames I could pull in Fortnite, here are those results: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-58R80K4f2yQ.html I wouldn't expect any better out of the 1155 platform than that, but it is still decent for low to mid range settings in game play. Thank you so much for this video I was able to put in the I 5 3570s cost me 30 bucks and I took the 4 gb ram and moved it to the number 2 slot and put in 8gb ddr3 1600 in the first slot cost me 28 bucks. So for 60 bucks this little 660s is running much faster. I just upgraded to windows 10 from usb drive. I hit F12 into the bios but could not figure out how boot from usb in bios I do not know enough about computers so I just opened turned the computer on an installed from the usb,. it prompted me to get rid of a few apps then it upgraded to windows 10. I bought the dell Inspiron 660s in 2013 can't remember the processor.. i guess it was intel Pentium but it came with 2gb of ram. In 2015 i added my first graphic card which was low profile gt730 and here comes the big upgrade! In 2017 I changed my cabinet and bought 550W power supply, upgraded my cpu to I5 2400, added GTX 1060 6GB, 8GB DDR3 ram. This system was now able to run most of the game released until 2017 at max settings, and now i'm planning to upgrade the cpu to i7, should i go with i7 3770 or i7 3770s ?

I found a Core i7 - 3770 on Amazon for 50 USD and I already own a full tower ATX case and a full profile GTX 1060 6 GB card and a new 500 watt power supply. Do you think if I just spend 50 USD to buy that i7 3770 I can build this Dell 660S system in this new standard ATX case with the stock dell cooler that came with this slim tower installed on top of core i3. Is it gonna be enough for gaming or do I need to buy new cooler to push i7-3770 just far enough that my 1060 reaches 100% utilisation? And on that note will core i7 - 3770 bottleneck my Galax GTX 1060 6GB? Will the VRM on this Dell Inspiron 660S handle i7-3770? The whole point of this is to spend as little as possible and utilise my GTX 1060 to its limits and for that 3770 seems good for 50 usd price. There shouldn't be any bottlenecking hopefully. Just worried about cooler because I don't want to spend much money on buying several new components. I also already have a 120 GB sata SSD and a 1 TB 5400 rpm 2.5" laptop hard drive that I will use to store games. This Dell motherboard only has 2 Sata ports. @@nicolaspenuelagonzalez7065 From what I know, the 570 case is a mATX type so any mATX board will fit. The 570 board itself is also mATX, the problem putting it into the SFF case has to do with the length of the board possibly being too long for the 660s case. I won't say that with certainty because I don't have any 660s cases right off hand to see if the mounts are there for that size mATX. I may be absolutely wrong here and you can do a full swap. For sure the 660s would be worth putting into another case to take advantage of the 16X PCI-E slot.
I have the Intel Core i5 3570 with 16GB of memory but the biggest issue I have is that I replaced the miniPCI with the Dual Band Intel 7260 Wireless-AC 7260HMW. I will get an error on the Intel Blue tooth side I disable it and just use the generic and works. Have you ever heard of this? Just me just bugs me with the Intel Bluetooth not working. The wireless is rocket fast and what a difference going away from the wireless N. Bios is up to date as well.
Yes, I have heard of issues with it. I'd just buy an add in Bluetooth PCI-E card and put it in that top slot. You'd still have that open 16x slot for a graphics card and the add in card won't get in the way. Of course, kinda defeats the purpose of the onboard wifi, but it is what it is.

I upgraded my 660s with 3570s and it works fine with A07 bios. The bios date is 8/24/2012. So in most cases the bios won’t need to be updated for cpu upgrade I believe.
I went ahead and updated as I was putting in a Xeon E3 1270 v2 which worked, lower cost, lower TDP. Under load it can still get pretty warm but since it's going from 65 to 69 watt I'm not too concerned with real world daily usage. $20 on eBay in Dec. 2022 btw, gotta love how tech depreciates.

Where are you getting your info from? I wanted to install a 3770, not an "s" but was told flat out that it wouldn't work. It physically fits but won't post. I would love to see proof that it works. This is for a 660S as well.
Personal experience installing the 3770 in both the 660s and 660. I used BIOS A10 if I remember correctly. Last one I did, I also used 16 gigs of 1600 DDR3. Also, if you look on userbenchmark.com and search for the 660, you will find several others who have also used the 3770. Also, hope the Info you got was not from the Dell forums. There is a troll/idiot on there who goes by the name speedstep and has a Firefox avatar who gives inaccurate or misleading info.

Sorry to hear that. The GT1030 in the description fits though. I figured I made a mistake when I guessed that it fit after I put out the video. I forgot it needs to be a single slot card.

@Vivek Verma Am I sure? I'm not that conceited. Yes, I have also heard the claim, have yet to see it implemented, and if it were, the modules would be hard to find and probably pretty expensive. I could see this possibly working using a Xeon and some ECC ram. Have never personally seen non ECC in capacity's of 16gig (x2 is 32 gig, board only has 2 slots). What I personally examine, is the chipset used and it's capability's. And, looking at the data out there for the b75 chipset, which is what the 660 uses, the limit is 16 gigs. If you think I'm wrong FEEL FREE to prove that, or better yet, take that challenge to the guy who says 32 gigs works. EDIT: Think of it like this as well.. Take the i7-3770k, will it work on this board? ABSOLUTELY!!, Should you put one on it? I wouldn't. It's a waste of money. If you can get it for the same price as the 3770 non k or s version, screw it, toss it in, but looking at the limitations of the BIOS, the more expensive "k" version of any CPU in this machine is a waste of CPU potential and money. Memory speed is locked in at 1600, capped at 16 gigs, I mean this is an OUTSTANDING board for a rock solid build if that is what you are looking for and I really really recommend the shit out of these Dell 660 and 660s motherboards even if you want to do way out there stuff like this: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-n2n2z5SiHPw.html but unfortunately, they do have limitations. 16 gigs. Dell quite often will misinform people. My guess, is the reason they only say 8 gigs max, is because they want to market a different machine to the consumer rather then give them the option of just upgrading. This information usually won't be found by visiting the Dell forums either. The paid tech support is not allowed to disclose this, and pretty much the only other person on the site who pretends to know anything is a complete moron who has been known to misinform. Goes by the name "speedstep" and uses a Firefox icon as his avatar. NEVER listen to that guy. Listen to people who have actually upgraded the machines and have tried parts not on Dell's official upgrade list. I've worked with the Inspiron 660/660s a couple dozen times over the years. In fact, it is my favorite old board to upgrade and swap because of the onboard wi-fi. I have used 16 gigs (8gigs x 2) many many times.

I would stop right there. If that is all you primarily use the PC for, then the only real gain a video card upgrade will give you is smoother playback when watching a video or even streaming on zoom or skype in 1080p. If you are happy with how it's performing now though, leave it alone and call it good.

No, form factor is different. If you need more power from a bigger power supply for a video card, best thing you can do, is recase the motherboard into a case that will fit a standard micro-ATX board. Lots of them out there in a fairly decent price range that make the swap worthwhile. If you are already spending money on a power supply and a video card in a system this old, you really wanna put it in a case that was made for better power delivery. Dell did everything right with this old motherboard except the power delivery which really limits your options. There really isn't any point in trying to fight it and insist on finding a higher watt power supply that fits inside. That just isn't happening and Dell intentionally made it that way. Besides... a better case... even a cheap case, would probably look way cooler anyways.

Been messing with my 660s, was going to put in new case, then heard power button and front panel are bitch to move, I did a Samsung EVO 1TB exchange of the drive, makes things bit faster, have the pentium, so she's a turtle. Thinking of going I7 road, my question is i removed the CD never use it, and old hard drive, does that save any power? and using a SSD now help? so the 77 core power would be safe, minus heat. Yes, but I would advise you to at minimum, change out that stock cooling fan for something a little more efficient. Heat will be the biggest issue you'll contend with for the most part. It won't be horrible mind you, but the 3770 DOES have a higher TDP then Dell's recommended upgrades. Running it as a server won't honestly be too much strain and shouldn't draw too much from the power supply, but the cooler you can keep a PC in general, the better.
I took all the internals out of a 660s and put them in a Rosewill mini atx case... How much watts can this motherboard handle? I need a power supply that will fit this case, not the tiny slim 230 watt that originally came with the 660s case. I do plan on upgrading the cpu and adding a gpu...
The motherboard itself can handle whatever you throw at it. There are only so many CPU's that fit, and the max TDP on the best one (i7 3770) is 77 watts. The problem and limitation on the board has to do with the very weak power supply. With that being said, the minimum I would go would be a 450watt PSU if you are doing entry level to mid range gaming on say a GTX 1060/GTX 1660 or even RX 560. If you are looking to add something a little more powerful then those graphics cards, like a 1070/1080/2060/2070/2080/etc, you'll wanna go more in the 600-650 watt range depending on the power requirements of the GPU.

Just buy a new wifi card for the slot. I get the ones with Bluetooth because why not. And I know what you are talking about. Stock wifi doesn't see my Asus router either.

The original card is DW 1506. (DW seems to be short for Dell Wireless). The card has 26 copper pads split into a group of 8 and a group of 18. I am having trouble finding this exact configuration for sale on a card that is advertised as, "dual band".

Not at all. It's using a 3570s which is a lower wattage CPU, the fan was swapped out for a Noctua NF-B9 redux-1600 PWM fan. Which does an excellent job at cooling.

@@mblackonline1059 Yes I took out the DVD drive. You can leave the SSD loose in the empty space where the DVD drive is located or buy a 3.5" HDD/Device Front Bay to External 5.25" Bay SSD Mounting Bracket

You get more for your money out of a i5 3570 then you do out of the i7 3770. While the 3770 is the end all top CPU for the board, the performance you get .vs the 3570 at cost does not justify the price if you are looking to save money.

You can go to the 16 gigs of 1600 if you like. The board will reduce the speed however, if the CPU is only rated for certain memory speeds. For instance, if say the CPU is a Pentium G630, the memory will reduce speed down to 1066 because that is what the G630 is rated at. Whereas, if you used like say a Core i3-3220 it would use the 1600 speed because the core i3 is also rated at 1600.

@@marccusumano1138 I honestly cant say that I have tested a GT 1030 long term, but it is the most powerful one that will work that is single slot & low profile. Others have tested this and have not reported issue. If power consumption is a concern, the only alternative, is swap it into a new case with a better PSU. But for that effort, you might as well put in something better then a GT-1030.
I recently got one of these for free. It came with an i3 2120 but when I tried to throw an i5 3450 and an i5 3570 in it it just beeps and the amber light flashes when I try to boot. Any idea what the problem is?
@@phreakwars Literally right after posting this I checked the BIOS and it was old as hell. A9 I think. I woke up this morning and updated to A13 and reinstalled the 3450 and it worked perfectly. At first I thought it might be the RAM but after I tested different RAM and it didn't work I don't know why I didn't think about the BIOS.
Yes, that CPU will absolutely run just fine. Great cheaper alternative to a 3770, though you only gain more threads not cores coming from a Pentium. But still, better then what you have now. My recommended CPU for it, would be the 3570s.
I need help I have 660s just tried to upgrade purchased 3570s and 8 gb ddr3 1600 and a 2032 cmos battery now I just took the old cmos battery out and put in a new one, now I have an amber light and beeping noise I did upgrade the bios before starting to put in new parts
On Dell computers when you change the CMOS battery you need to hold down on the power button for about 15 seconds release then try powering again. This is why you are seeing the amber light. Try that and let me know if that fixes it.
You can do ALOT with an Inspiron 660. That's why it's my favorite old board to play around with. Just search my channel for the Inspiron 660 (and the Optiplex 3010) and check out all the cool things I have done with them.. Not only can you make them into half decent gaming machines, but they are one of the easiest boards to turn into a Hackintosh. I certainly wish Dell made boards like them today, I'd have a blast upgrading them for shit's and giggles.
It's supported, Dell support is pretty useless. The video I am currently filming now covers installing Windows 11 on non TPM computers, but after that I will be probably doing another Inspiron 660 also covering Windows 11 and I will try to cover this for you at that time
Is there a way to upgrade to Windows 11 on this PC? I already upgraded the RAM to 8 gigs, swapped the hard drive for Crucial MX500 SSD 500GB, and swapped the processor for a Core i7-3770S. Microsoft's PC Health Check states the system is not compatible as it does not support Secure Boot. Is there a way to enable Secure Boot?
That's a great question. That would be a BIOS setting. I honestly do not recall right off hand if dell made that an option in the BIOS, you'd have to go in and have a look. I would think that it would be there but I can't be sure at this moment. If it is there, you'll need to make sure you are UEFI and turn off legacy boot to see it. I actually do have another Dell 660 board coming in on Monday though. If you haven't found it in the BIOS by then, I'll let you know when I boot the new board coming in and I'll find out for sure. But just an FYI, for Intel Core chips, the support for Windows 11 starts at the Intel 8th-gen chips. So it probably will not work. But from what I understand, there is a work around allthings.how/how-to-fix-this-pc-cant-run-windows-11-error I personally have not done anything with Windows 11 yet, so anything that I would know about it, is just speculation and what I personally have read.
@@phreakwars I have never changed BIOS settings before. If you could post instructions for getting the Inspiron 660s working with Windows 11 that would great! Also, the i7-3770S has a PassMark score of 6212 vs i3-8100's PassMark score of 6132. I can't imagine the user experience being much different that a base Intel 8th-gen system on Windows 11.

@@ericwininger2333 so I did some research and testing on the new 660 boards I just got in. Yes, you absolutely can install Windows 11 on the 660 but you'll need to modify the install. I will be doing a video on it probably next week. I need to finish up a high priority build and another build after that and then I'll put out a video showing how to do it.

For those games, you won't need to spend too much, but you'll need some decent specs. The GT 1030 is gonna be the best you can do without making major changes. With what I recommended, you can expect results pretty much like this.. You'd have to send it to some professional service to extract data. That drive is probably toast. As a matter of fact, the reason I got this 660s in the first place is because the owner was getting that same error on his drive. He had alot of important business files on it that we could not recover.

Also someone suggested that i should try to do linux session I might be able to recover some data. Once again thanks and I have subbed and liked the video. I was using whatsapp from bluestack it seems like I will lose my chat data too. So I thought of cloning it. But they said that it can't be cloned if it's dead. The computer started running very slowly and I was not expecting hard drive failure. It was on update and power cut happened. Next time it didn't boot and stuck on automatic repair loop

DDR3L, I'm actually not too sure about because I've never tried any low volt modules in one, but yes, it will absolutely support 1600 speed. I've also tried 1866 even and it does work, though it will clock down to 1600 speed.
You mean the i3 heatsink on the 3770? I wouldn't recommend it. The i3 CPU itself, yes absolutely you can use it with the stock heatsink. That's only a 55 watt CPU.

@@kidzeetube.669 You can use up to a core i7-3770. That would be the best one. A 3770k would probably also work, but would be a waste since you can't overclock with this board. The Core i3-3240, Core i3-3245 & Core i3-3250 and others will all work in the 660s and they are all 55 watt CPU's, so the answer to that, is no, you will not need to change the CPU fan or power supply. However, if the fan has had alot of years of spinning on it, it might be a good idea just to change it out anyways rather then risk that the bearings are worn. @@danielmpr Best boost you can give it, would be to swap in an SSD drive. These have went down in price bigtime and you can easily pick up a new 120 gig drive for under $20 brand new. Prices on larger capacity aren't too shabby either. Consider using one for a difference you can see and feel.

@@danielmpr Again, you will want to stay in the 65 watt TDP range. Many i5 chips will work just fine, however a few of them are rated at 77 watt TDP and might, but not always cause thermal issues. For thermal paste, my go to TIM is Noctua NT-H1 which spreads easy and does a decent job.

Not that I am aware of. Dell does not document any Xeon use and I have seen no evidence to suggest it will work. Perhaps I am wrong or misinformed, but as far as I know, no, you can't use one.

And I guess to clarify, a Xeon will YES most likely work as long as it is a socket 1155. I can't speak to which ones in the exact because I have never tried one, nor have I seen anybody give any claims to doing one on a 660 simply because it is an obscure thing one would do at best, but given the capability's of the chipset itself, one can reason what would and would not work, I guess what it comes down to, is what Dell put into their BIOS microcode, which, I certainly do not know.

Sorry for taking so long to respond. Just now caught this question, you earned a PIN. I would recommend you use 16 gigs of 1600 DDR3, and at minimum, a Core i5 3570, if you can find one at a good price, bump up to the Core i7 3770. I'd use a 650 watt PSU, preferably semi or full modular. Keep in mind that board has an extra 1x PCI-E slot above the 16x, so you could install an add on USB 3.0 card or even a SATA controller as well if you like. Case choice is yours. Personal recommendation, Cooler Master MasterBox NR400. GPU, go with a 1660 or better. Something like this is what I would go with: pcpartpicker.com/list/C8tGjp search ebay / aliexpress, and other places for the CPU and RAM. You can get it cheap., get it now before the price hikes.
@@UCFxDBWaxgp3FkSOLsKMA2Mg The stock heatsink/fans are only rated by what the CPU thermal is rated at. Typically 55-65 watts TDP. The 3770 uses a 77 watt TDP, so you'd want to bump up a little higher on the heat sink and fan, a 3770s has a TDP of 65 watts and would be just fine for the 660s with the stock heat sink.

@@phreakwars it's msi and it's smaller. And there is just not enough spac to mangle it in. Measurements say otherwise but in reality you would have to take it apart,install it on your mobo the put everything back. And you would still be missing mobo screws
@@paraspundir5507 Yes, but it will require reformatting the drive and doing a fresh install. Use the Windows 7 key that should be affixed to your Dell to upgrade and activate Windows 10 x64.
1030 is probably the only decent one you'll find without having to do a case swap. Myself personally, I'd rather do a case swap and run a 1650 or 1660 super on it.

Nobody I know has a Dell Inspiron 660s, and if it can support 16 gbs, then it has the same motherboard as the Dell Inspiron 660, which supports 32 gbs.
@@FireFoxDestroyer I've only tried 16 gigs personally in a 660/660s. If 32 will run on it, that's pretty sweet, though I wouldn't think finding 16gb modules for each channel would be very easy to come by.
