Turns out the 660s does support more memory! Others on the Internet have said that it secretly supports 16 GB even though it wasn't documented by Dell. I'm tinkering with a 660s right now while listening to the video in the background, and earlier today I put 16 GB in and ran memtest86+ for a while, and it detected it all and it all tested fine.
same. didnt even know about the "8gb limitation" and just threw in 16 and it worked like a charm. had to swap the sticks around a few times but now it works just fine. speeds do not go up to 1600 in my case though and im stuck at 1333mhz
i got this Dell Inspiron 660s SFF, today for $13, a guy was giving away his elderly mom's comp. The PSU he said is bad hence the low price. Well, it was all there except the HDD, and he kept 5 GB of ram in... Sweet! The PSU is like $40 on line - it's the Small form factor. It is the Intel Pentium CPU, not the i-3 and i-5 that were offered with this PC, so it's the lower end, but still for 13 bucks its a steal! Im not going to buy a new PSU, i have enough mini-towers and PSUs from my dumpster diving that i'll be able to put the mobo, and DVD-ROM into, like some Dell Dimension 1100/2400 cases or an old 2002-era Gateway PC. BTW the motherboard, or at least mine, on this Dell 660s i got is DIB75R, so it is the 1155 CPU socket type.
I just upgraded two 660s this month. One is a win 10, i5 3570k, 16gigs ram, sapphire 7570 gpu, 240gb Ssd, old Hdd wiped as a 2nd. Other has win 8.1, i3 3225, 8gigs ram, 120gb Ssd old laptop Hdd wiped as a 2nd. Some parts I had some came from ebay and amazon.
Nice, i love tinkering and upgrading old machines. I have about 11 machines in my closet lol and i take them out and play with them all win 95 to win 11 haha and everything in between.
If you could rig up a case fan to blow on the heatsink of the video card, that would probably help quite a bit. Use some hot glue or sticky tape or something like that. I've done that before with some pretty decent results.
I though about going down that route, but it would have been tacky to have a fan hack-jobbed onto the side of the case like that. If it was a system that I would be using myself, I would, but not a good solution personally for selling it to someone to use.
My mom found this same one in the trash in a rich neighborhood. She gave it to me and i upgraded it with an i7-3770s 4c/8t cpu, 8gb ddr3 ADATA XPG ram (2x4gb sticks), MSI LP GT 1030 GDDR5 2GB video card, PNY 240gb ssd boot drive and a 2tb Western Digital HD and upgraded the cpu cooler to a Vetroo M2 with Rainbow lights all running Windows 11 Home. Everything runs great, Overwatch 1080p med setting 90 percent resolution steady 60 fps, gta 5 high setting 1080p, ultra textures 55ish fps and Tomb raider 2013 1080p gets 60 fps on high settings. I'm very pleased with this little sleeper lol. It will also take 16gb of ram but why would anyone do that? With the limitations of the video card you can fit in this case you wouldn't use over 8gb, if i ever changed it to another case or changed the mobo and case i would probably put 16gb in it
Question, we have a few of these in our office and I was wondering if I just upgrade the RAM to 16gb, will it work faster? We’re not using the computers for gaming, strictly to look up info and for documents, internet.
I got better benchmark results than your 'before' result, with a Pentium 4 3.2GHz/4GB RAM machine, at a slightly lower resolution (1080x1200, NVidia Quadra 512Mb) but still...a Pentium 4! From 2004 I think. Same benchmark, but in XP Pro.
I recently got one of these for free. It came with an i3 2120 but when I tried to throw an i5 3450 and an i5 3570 in it it just beeps and the amber light flashes when I try to boot. Any idea what the problem is?
