Episode 9! Yahoo! Today we look into Max & Lee’s old van tour from 2018. As many of you who’ve seen this layout/design series know, I’m not a fan of convertible beds, but in the interest of avoiding repetitive points, we take a look at their kitchen design, storage, lounge space, and more! This van did not have a toilet or shower (something to keep in mind if a bathroom is a "must" for you) but what I did especially love were the Occy customizations. Let me know what you think below! Thanks for watching!

WHAT IS THIS CHANNEL?
We're Ladi (from Czechia) & Margaret (from USA) and we are a location independent couple of 4+ years. This channel is centered around our lifestyle and our business ventures, which has definitely changed a lot since Covid-19 impacted our vanlife plans!
Lately our videos has been focused on our innovations & eBike designs, but that won’t be the only content forever. We also plan to build our ultimate dream campervan this year! Along with our badass eBikes, we’ll be traveling the globe when it’s safe to do so. We also have an adventure kitten, Millie Kua, who is quite the traveler herself!
This channel is in Ladi’s name because he had the channel before we met, so we naturally started uploading videos to it instead of starting a new channel. We are currently working on a new name, logo & branding, but we aren’t in too much of a rush. Mainly, we want to focus on the quality of our content and our eBike business creations for now, the rest will come in time. Building the foundation is what it’s all about!
Our eBike digital products can be found here: mysuperebike.com/
I’m Margaret, and I’ve lived in multiple vehicles all over the world. I love tiny home design, travel, and efficiency. But there are very few voices in the vanlife community who are willing to be real about the campervan layouts we see all over the internet. Let’s get to it! Enjoy!

Hey all! Wednesday is upon us once again and I'm so excited we can dig into some of the details of Max & Lee's van build with you! NEXT WEEK IS EPISODE 10! THAT MEANS NEXT WEEK IS OUR TOILET TALK!! I dug into the stove and sink details a bit today, mostly because I've had more and more people ask me why I dislike portable stoves so much. When you look at what more "experienced" vanlifers decide to do, they almost always decide a fixed stove is the way forward, and for good reason. I hope by shedding light on this topic, I can help you skip that step all together! Hope you enjoyed the review, let me know your thoughts below!

Love your reviews. I’ve got a pretty crappy Hyundai iLoad van with a “cheap as chips, diy fit out”, and that’s all I need for how I use my van. When I watch your reviews, I’m looking at the individual fitout items to see what ideas I can retro-fit into my crappy van. It might just be how that have installed a paper towel dispenser or built a drawer or some other small idea. There are some amazing ideas in these builds that you can emulate without much cost (as long as you’re willing to compromise a bit).

The closer you are to an opening, the wider your field of view - so her take on “tunnel view” (rear doors) vs panoramic view (side door) is spot on. Also if your bed is fixed crossways at the rear, when you lie on the bed and look out that rear door ( every “van life” photo) something is going to be hanging off the bed.

This video made me change my mind on portable stoves. I think the only time having a portable stove makes sense is if you somehow have enough solar for an induction cooktop to use outside but anything other than those little propane campstoves for outside cooking, and it becomes too heavy. Those large outside stoves with lids... I'm not sure how they work but I think they have their own fuel cannisters attached that you can refill perhaps but that means you have to refill more often and can't just get an underslung propane tank which would be easier. Fixed stove all the way.

I tend to fry everything and have a very fatty diet (which is good for me for medical reasons). Even with windows open and extractor fans my kitchen gets pretty greasy, so I'm trying to design my cook top in the van to slide out hinge outside.
@laur-unstagenameactuallyca1587
@laur-unstagenameactuallyca1587 4 года назад
@@subspaceanomaly Ooh awesome. That's the perfect way to plan an indoor/outdoor stove. I have some ideas, if you don't mind me bombarding you with them. I saw a van tour by a pair called Kyle and Madison of their Toyota Hiace and they incorporated their twin sliding doors by having the kitchen built up against the sliding door that they don't use to get in and out, and then when they need to cook outside they open that door and there's a table that flips up off the back of the kitchen block so they can put their stove there and cook outside. ( for an idea of what it looks like: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-a5c5rBw1WI8.html ) With yours, that could instead be a 2 way sliding cupboard (I LOVE two-way sliders by the way, great for vans. Accuride sliders are quite reputable). So, your stove could be stored in a drawer that slides indoors when you need to use it but could also slide out the back of the kitchen counter to the outside if you have a twin door system. This would be perfect for a smaller or mid sized van, or even a large van if you don't have overhead cabinets as they wouldn't be able to fix onto a sliding door. If the kitchen is located at the back where the rear doors are, and you don't have twin sliding doors, you could have the stove and a small under-counter propane tank on a kitchen module that's on sliders that can slide right out the rear doorway, and leave the sink and rest of the kitchen unconnected to the sliding module. On the furthest face of cooking module that slides out, you could have a flip up table (like the one in the outdoor kitchen part of Kyle and Madison's) with a support stored behind it when down. The table could have a gap cut out in the middle of it where you could put a collapsible silicone camp sink for dishwashing or food prep when the kitchen module is slid out if you don't want to be walking back inside to use the fixed kitchen sink. Those collapsible sinks don't have drains as far as I know, so you could find a product that does or just cut a hole in them so the water drains out. As for a faucet for outside cooking and meal prep, you could utilise a solar road shower affixed to the roof (low-tech) or use those propane powered heated outdoor showers that people usually have in vans (a little more "high tech"). ( Visual aid for the idea of a collapsible kitchen sink in a flip down table with a hole in it to nest here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-pnRwEhxpaME.html ) Hope this was helpful if it wasn't anything you've already thought of before. Sorry if it's too long to read
@subspaceanomaly
@subspaceanomaly 4 года назад
@@laur-unstagenameactuallyca1587 thanks for the ideas. I'm a way off having to do any of this, haven't bought a van yet, have a tiny one now but planning. My idea was to have a section of floor the width of the side door, that then slides out the side of the van to make an outdoor platform, and for a lightweight unit with the stove to double hinge out around the door and hover next to the outdoor platform. But your sliding backwards drawer or similar things would certainly be simpler. Good luck with your projects

I totally agree with your last comment re costings. Tiny homes and van life is all about being eco friendly, being conscious of the footprint you’re making on the planet. If you’re interested in van living surely you would be wanting to be more minimalist and for want of a better phrase, rough it a little bit. If you want all the luxuries of a residential dwelling buy a house not a van or one of those £200,000.00 + coach jobs with hydraulic sides, jacuzzi baths, gold plated taps, home cinemas, gyms, swimming pools blah blah blah in them.

I’m really enjoying this series. Thanks so much for doing these. One thing that always bothers me with a lot of these conversions is the weight. With all of the wood, tiles etc some of them must be getting up to the max weight capacity of the vans. In the UK we have strict rules on weight and indeed a standard license only allows 3.5t vehicles to be driven. This isn’t an issue in the US but overloading a van will seriously reduce its lifespan. I would be interested to hear you comment on this on the more heavily built vans.
@curlyhaircamping
@curlyhaircamping 4 года назад
yes, agreed! I am excited to talk about that and also weight distribution, but I've been waiting for it to be more obvious. It's hard to make too much of an assumption for vans like this, but it's certainly on my mind! Thanks for the comment!

Binged watched the series and subbed, as a van life viewer addict, I like that you take a more prosaic (critical) view of popular van builds. It helps also highlights that for photogenic vs function, function comes 1st. Whilst beauty is nice, safety is essential. Also really nice pointing out good ideas and points for improvement. I hope you keep this series going for a while, it's helpful to see so much practical information in one spot. Also there are a Lot of builds to learn from.

Also NEVER buy a vehicle without a good inspection of it by a seasoned technician or a dealer of origin. Think of it like when you buy a house and all the inspections that cost thousands but save you save so much more in the long run.

6:16 - If you're looking for a better way to store fruits/veggies long term I HIGHLY HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend vacuum sealing in mason jars using a mechanical hand pump then throwing in the fridge. It requires no electricity and the fruits/veggies begin to ferment at the perfect rate. My fruit lasts MONTHS in a vacuum sealed jar in my fridge! It only takes a few seconds to reseal the jar each time I get food out. Heres a tutorial - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-4sceVvxxluw.html

Funny, the Ambos in Perth hate these vans because when they break down, it takes so long to get parts I have discussed the use of Euro vans in Australia with Max before. Sure, they are larger but they can be unreliable and very expensive to repair. Best of the Euro would be Iveco and worst without a doubt is the Trafic.

This is perhaps a “boomer” take on things, but my wife and I have worked hard our entire lives to raise our family and give our kids (now grown) everything they actually needed. We are approaching retirement and are ‘comfortable’ so we will be buying a new Promaster and I will be doing a really nice, super functional build out and yes, it will run $80 - $90K. Why should anyone have anything negative to say about?

I’d really love to see your thoughts on the VanLifeBuilds first van that could sleep 3. But regardless another great video!

Agree. It is my favourite van build ever. If I had the money I would use this layout and get them to build it for me. Only thing I would do differently is lose the wood burning stove so I could make the kitchen worktop deeper for more storage.

would you be able to do a section or a video on some questions? especially with specific situations. because I really want to do van life in the near future but I still have a lot of questions and don't know what to do in other areas where I'm torn between two options.

I love the series! I've always been big into tiny houses, and the van builds are giving me retirement goals (for far in the future though). Thought I might suggest Snow and Curt's van build. Very different from anything I've ever seen, and I'd love to hear your thoughts on it!

Did you notice... For preparing the incredible lattes an extra table is needed, which has to be stored somewhere , because the little folding table in the back is to small and the countertop has a higher Level.

Hi! went on link to get bed lift actuators. Link is not sending to US. so went directly to sight. I want to do same lift kit. It gives a ton of choices for voltage(50mm to 250 mm) there are also speed choices (100n 180n, 209n, etc) I’m a movie makeup artist who wants the lift kit to get to my equipment in garage. Can you help with exactly what to order. I know you mentioned 300n/30mm per second but then there was voltage options etc and I got confused. I’m ordering before my van conversion guy shows up and this is a bit beyond me. Learning so much from you guys thank you!!! Def using Ali express and other links of yours!

When someone says they've put $60,000 and up into a van, I can't help but think ..... 'Why don't they save themselves a ton of work and buy a campervan already built? True, they probably won't get a new one at that price, tho they can get a class C in that price range, but they can get one a couple of years old with a huge fridge & freezer, full baths, a stove & oven, and all the rest of the perks.

My 1st van was an old 18 ft ldv,cost 2000,spent 1,500 converting very simply,including installing a wood burning stove..I had it for nearly 7 years and sold it for 3.550 in a bidding war on eBay.My next van was an old med roof cargo/connect type van,with a dropped floor so I could stand, cost of 1,000,spent around 500 for the solar/batteries etc then less than a 100 for insulation,wood for the build.My van had a chemical toilet in a box (like a square shoebox),12 v coolbox,underbed storage,water storage for 40 gallons,a Berkeley filter,roof vent,a kitchen and of course a bed lol.It can be done very cheaply,my old Ldv,the kitchen was an old computer desk remodeled into a kitchen with a deep sink ,drawer and running tap.Don't give up your dream to have a van because of the cost of a build,get your van ,build cheaply and if need be, change things up when you can afford too.Happy travels .
