Episode 8! Exploring Alternatives did an awesome van conversion, and had a few clever ways to cut costs during their build. As you know, this series is focused on DESIGN and examining different types of layouts, so you can ultimately decide what van build will be best for you. Remember: thoughtfulness is the key to a quality design!

WHAT IS THIS CHANNEL?
We are Ladi (from Czechia) & Margaret (from USA) and we are a location independent couple of 4+ years. This channel is centered around our lifestyle and our business ventures, which has definitely changed a lot since Covid-19 impacted our vanlife plans. Lately our videos has been focused on our innovations & eBike designs, but that won’t be the only content forever. We also plan to build our dream campervan this year! Along with our badass eBikes, we will be traveling the globe when it’s safe to do so. We also have an adventure kitten, Millie Kua, who is quite the traveler herself!
This channel is in Ladi’s name because he had the channel before we met, so we naturally started uploading videos to it instead of starting a new channel. We are currently working on a new name, logo & branding, but we aren’t in too much of a rush. Mainly, we want to focus on the quality of our content and our eBike business creations for now, the rest will come in time. Building the foundation is what it’s all about!
Our eBike digital products can be found here: mysuperebike.com/
I’m Margaret, and I’ve lived in multiple vehicles all over the world. I love tiny home design, travel, and efficiency. But there are very few voices in the vanlife community who are willing to be real about the campervan layouts we see all over the internet. Let’s get to it! Enjoy!

Yay for Wednesdays! Hope you enjoyed today's review! I tried to stick to the main points about this tour (it was getting very long), so I didn't talk as much about the aesthetics (which are certainly lovely). If you want to see more of their build, I always link the original video in the description. As you can imagine, Ladi and I are getting incredibly itchy to find our new van. We're very particular with what we want (size, kms, year, engine, price, etc.) We're trying our best to be patient, but boy oh boy is that difficult! Once we find our van we'll be able to solidify our graphics, which we plan to share with you throughout the build. Let me know your thoughts on this review below! As always, thanks for watching :)

The shower episode, please talk about recirculating showers. Granted it is slightly high tech, even needs maintenance. But I think it's a really useful tech especially for people who NEED showers everyday and also like going off grid for short durations.

Great video. Two comments: instead of a p-trap for the sink gray water, which takes a lot of space, HepVo valves are a much better option. They can be installed vertical or horizontally. Urine bottle: I have been living full time with a separating toilet for almost 2 years now. I am using a spray bottle with water, a drop of soap and essential oils of your liking to spray the bowl after peeing. The pee bottle will not smell at all if you empty it every day or even every 2 days. Previously I tried sugar and vinegar and it indeed smelled very quickly. Keep the videos coming, Margaret!

Side loading in a van is a huge pain from what I gather, especially if it's on the bottom half. Not to mention the even bigger issue for me - the inefficiency of side-loading fridges as the cold air slides out and forces it to cool the air all over again.

The bed system is genius; especially the rope threaded through the copper pipe & secured to the boat cleats‼️👍🏽👍🏽😉 FYI; I like the extra room along the sides of their bed as it works for storage (table top & leg, etc,) as well as room to make & unmake bed easily. 👌🏽 + their DIY Lagoon Table is most excllent as well‼️👍🏽👍🏽😯

Margaret, I love your videos!! I’ve been following the series since the start and I really appreciate you lengthening the time for us to read the words on screen. But I did want to let you know that we only need enough time to pause the video and read the description. You don’t need to give us a long time during your video to actually read the thing. The pauses on the older videos were too short, and now on this video it’s a bit too long. Just a few seconds would be enough time for us to pause the video and read if we want to. I hope that made sense. Otherwise, these videos are so freaking great!
@curlyhaircamping
@curlyhaircamping 4 года назад
Hey Tina, yes I understand that feedback completely. Mostly I decided to do it this way because of the feedback I got from people who watch on their TVs and phones. Some of which it’s not possible to pause fast enough, or when they do pause, the main screen goes dark and it’s impossible to read. I know it’s a bit long, but I’m not ever going to make it longer than 10 seconds :) thank you so much for your lovely compliments and support, too! I’m thrilled you enjoy them!

I am definitely going to steal that table idea, just tweak it a bit so it’s quicker to attach the top but the piping idea is genius! Also they could’ve added a slide to the bed so once the back is raised they could push the bed back and create more space. Some great ideas in this van, and it’s often the simple ones that prove the most effective!!!

I love your videos. These seem like really fab people and this is not meant as a judgment about them personally, if this works for them, that is fantastic. You are so kind during your review. I will throw my 2cents with in there. The spaces become the bed would drive me insane! I would lose everything down in the basement abyss! To at least provide a shelf to catch things from falling or to purposefully store things would be awesome. If worried about mold, a cheap material to use for the shelf would be peg-board. If supported it can hold quite a bit of weight and would only allow for the tiniest bits of things to fall through, but power cords, chapstick, tablets, phones, etc., would all be safe.

The stored stove allows for cooking outdoors which we do regularly. THe chest style frig is so much more efficient electrically that I bleieve it offsets the hunting. If you use a front door frige mounted under the countertop you have the same issue hunting for food in the back of the frig.

I like the way they created their own table mount, but in the bottom of the support pipe I think an angled notch taken out at the bottom would be a handy detail - you know things are going to get dropped down that open pipe end, and they're going to be things you don't even realise until years later you find "that thing we had the fight about who had lost that thing" (I'd also want that open pipe end lower than the wooden top edge and given a downwards angle away from the corner and really rounded over so you're not scraping a leg on the side, or catching a toe in the pipe. They have greater faith in roadways not having hidden potholes or bumps when you're carrying a full jug of urine :p (I feel like if you're making a toilet area, might as well make it somewhat waterproof and able to double as a shower, the door and cupboard already formed 2 sides and the curtain plus upper frame could fold flat against the doorway) How I wish I had a gutted van and copious quantities of cardboard to show constructions...

I Love love love the bed. The only thing I would change is having the entire bottom section come up to screw onto the swivel and that way the benches would be lower on either side to provide a higher table and possibly make the benches a bit shorter on the sides to give us more leg room. This might require the bed to be a bit higher and to have some extra cushions for the benches that double as extra pillows I suppose. Anyway thank you for getting my creative juices flowing, love your videos!♡

The flip side of removable a cooktop is that you'd have more options: you can use it on the dining table for hot potting or even use it outside if you have an external outlet. Also, fixed cooktops are harder to service if ever broken.

I just acquired a Ford Transit similar to this one. I'm barely 6' Tall, I'm planning to put the bad Across the back (Parallel to the Rear axle for Sleeping) and Slope the Bed Up Slightly On the Passenger Side. The Van had to be Registered as a Commercial Vehicle (California) because to only has Two Seats (and a dividing wall, which I want for security). I plan to replace the Passenger Seat with a Flip-Down Jump Seat to allow storage of Less Valuable items on the Front Passenger Side Floor. I'm thinking about mounting a Second Flip-Down Jump Seat on the opposite side of the wall Back to Back with the First one. This might allow the status of the van to be revised as "Passenger" because Three Seats, though one faces backwards. I'm working on modifying (+Stirring Mechanism/12VDC Fan) a Reliance Luggable Loo into a Composting Toilet for #2 only (a/k/a "Human Litter Box, liquid detergent bottle for #1). I also got and alcohol Marine stove mounted on a gimbal. Reliance Aquatainees for Water would like to get 2X small Iceco 12VDC refrigerators, small microwave. Solar power plant (possibly Propane Standby) Heater(s). My main reason for getting out is playing music (I've spent the COVID pandemic playing my Hammond Organ outside (weather permitting) for tips using a 500W Jackery. Somebody who stole my friend's Honda Civic added a boombox sound system to it. He allowed me to keep the amplifier from the setup to turn into a 12-volt DC PA system amp for hopefully being able to perform off-grid. garage space under the bed will be used to store the above-mentioned Hammond organ that shop cabinet with a small Leslie speaker under the elevated head and if the bed.

3:00 a top loading fridge has the advantage of keeping in the cold much more than a side loading fridge where the cold would "fall out" every time you open the door thus the fridge would need more energy to maintain temperature compared to top loaders. Energy is a big consideration in vans.
@ladiandmargaret

I think this is very overanalyzed topic. These are very small amounts of power we are talking about. Plus top loading fridge is definitely opened longer because you dig through all the food to get to the bottom.

One thing that strongly influenced this couples decision I believe is the fact that they are in Canada. It is impossible to have a gray water tank mounted underneath the van -it will freeze up and likely crack. I also think that is why they did not put in a shower. Just dealing with the problems of the cold and water tank storage.
@curlyhaircamping

It certainly depends on where the vanlifer lives, and also what material is used for the tank. Not all tanks will crack if they freeze. And yes, agree that outdoor showers are VERY hard in the winter (I speak from experience on that one haha!) but for me it was always a necessary evil. Love this couple

You mentioned always have a P trap! A couple of years ago I installed for a tiny home client a “hepvo self sealing waterless waste valve” that essentially acts like a straight-piece one-way waste water valve so there isn’t water or odor return. It saved on much needed vertical space in the shower base install, and I’d be curious about your thoughts on them (if you’ve had experience with them or general thoughts on them for van use)

A top loading fridge consumes less energy. With a regular fridge once you open the door, the cold air is going to drop and escape, losing energy while with the top loading fridge the cold air is gonna stay at the bottom. You know hot air goes up, cold air goes down.
@veganpotterthevegan
@veganpotterthevegan 4 года назад
The seals make a bigger difference. The volume of air lost is extremely easy to replace with cold air. The food/drinks inside do more to maintain temperature than air temporarily moving in and out

Vegan potter in theory you might be right, but all depends on the climate you are in. In the tropics or sub tropics (ambient temp of 30+ *C) in summer your fridge can cycle up 12 hours a day
@veganpotterthevegan
@veganpotterthevegan 4 года назад
@@alastairsedgwick9333 you'll have more cycling in that kinda climate no matter the fridge. Even the best fridge will cycle more there.

I put magnets in a recessed topside counter sunk hole in ceiling so the door pull sticks to it.

Top loading prevents cold air from escaping when opened up. Small fridge and freezer let’s cold air rush out when opened. It’s a trade off and I chose a top loading unit.

I can't wait for the deep dive!! Also, what you've said just now about compost toilets has changed my mind in getting one, I had already been doubting because I saw how the urine part of nature's head had to be emptied (lol!! shattered all my initial notions of the nature's head toilet). I think I'll do a composting toilet that only handles solids, or something like the Laveo Dry Flush toilets and then have a pee funnel instead.
@casafreesmith
@casafreesmith 4 года назад
My ideal composting toilet would be similar to theirs, but the urine would be diverted to a gray water tank mounted under the vehicle. The solids bag/bucket with fan is super easy to empty, unlike the Nature's Head which seems to require removing the entire commode to the outside and completely taking it. apart. I don't understand why people are so fond of the Nature's Head, which is both expensive and laborious (yikes). The company who makes this van's urine diversion system, Separett, has some nice higher end models too.

@@casafreesmith ahhhh... your gray water tank idea is brilliant!!!! that makes so much sense too since it's easier to clean out the tank without having to use your hands. Unlike the urine boxes in other compost toilets, I'd assume you'd had just have to flush down some water mixed with bleach through the gray water tank and that would clean. Yeah a system like that, along with the bag and bucket (no pouring solid wastes into a bag and spilling things) sounds like the best of all worlds. I'm with ya, don't understand the hype with nature's head at all smh... I'll check out some of Separett's stuff, thank you for sharing the gray water tank idea! 🤗

@@laur-unstagenameactuallyca1587 I don't know if it's possible (still in the van dreaming phase), but ideally I'd run the gray water from the kitchen into the same tank. Then, the urine would be diluted. And, as described in the video, a pea trap would be essential to capture odors. I'd really prefer to only ever have to drain one gray tank...

@@casafreesmith I was actually thinking of a small gray water tank under the sink before, but that makes much more sense to dilute it using sink water in one central gray tank. Would also free up space under the sink too! Whenever I convert my van I'm gonna have to pay you to give me more ideas lol 😂😂😂 You're just so good at thinking of common sense solutions to problems.
