Episode 11! Designing your campervan layout can be very overwhelming, but some of the bigger topics such as a partitions, power, weight distribution, and bathrooms, should be among the first you address. In today’s video we take a look at Uphill Adventure's beautiful Sprinter 170 van conversion (2019), and we look at some of the layout/design ideas they were able to implement into their tiny home on wheels. As always, please remember this series/this video is never to insult anyone, design is objective, and my goal is to always provide my own opinion in a clear & respectful fashion. Thanks for watching!

WHAT IS THIS CHANNEL?
We are Ladi (from Czechia) & Margaret (from USA) and we are a location independent couple of 4+ years. This channel is centered around our lifestyle and our business ventures, which has definitely changed a lot since Covid-19 impacted our vanlife plans.
Lately our videos has been focused on our innovations, eBike designs, & Van Tour Reviews, but that won’t be the only content forever. We also plan to build our dream campervan this year! WE CAN’T WAIT TO SHARE IT WITH YOU! Along with our badass eBikes, we’ll be traveling the globe when it’s safe to do so. We also have an adventure kitten, Millie Kua, who is quite the traveler herself! This channel is in Ladi’s name because he had the channel before we met, so we naturally started uploading videos to it instead of starting a new channel. We are currently working on a new name, logo & branding, but we aren’t in too much of a rush. Mainly, we want to focus on the quality of our content and our eBike business creations for now, the rest will come in time. Building the foundation is what it’s all about!
Our eBike digital products can be found here: mysuperebike.com/
I’m Margaret, and I’ve lived in multiple vehicles all over the world. I love tiny home design, travel, and efficiency. But there are very few voices in the vanlife community who are willing to be real about the campervan layouts we see all over the internet. Let’s get to it! Enjoy!

It’s Wednesday, baby! Thanks for watching this episode with me! Sarah and Jess did an awesome job converting their van, but there is always something we can learn from! I’ve loved receiving all the suggestions for upcoming reviews. I’ve been so proud and impressed by the designs & ideas this community is able to think up & execute. When I was first exposed to vanlife in 2016, there’s no way I would’ve imagined half of these recent van tours would even be possible! Let me know what you think below, and have a great week!

Hey Margaret, I love these videos and really look forward to them. I was wondering why you're not posting them on your own channel? I'm not so interested in the e-bike content and that's why I'm not subscribed to this channel. I'd love to subscribe if the overall content was something I was interested in, otherwise, it's going to mess up the suggested videos and content for me which has been super useful so far, I always get great suggestions. Anyway, thanks for making these reviews and deep dives, it's great info!

You should be a consultant for planning van builds; help people figure out the best build layout, with safety and efficiency in mind. This service would be helpful for those that want to get into a van of their own, but need help. Many DIY’s could benefit from the tips. 1 on 1 consultations. 🙂 Great job!

Recently, within the last couple of months or so, I stumbled across your van tour (build) review videos. I don't recall which one, but my initial reaction to it was, oh, another van lifer/world traveler sidelined by covid trying to make meaningful content to keep their subscriber base. Worse, it was based not on your work, but rather on the original content of others. I thought that was pretty low. I was wrong. Since ~mid 2018 I've been watching lots of van build, van life, and travel videos. I ordered a new Sprinter in June 2019, took delivery in early December, delivered it to my builder in March and hopefully, I'll be picking it up within the month. I mention this for two reasons. First, because this comment is coming from somebody with a lot of money on the table. Second, because I wish you, someone, had been doing the type of van build critiques that you do while I was in my research phase. Think about it. We all watch van tours to get ideas about building a van. But none of them, none that I've seen in more than 2 years, other than yours, actually delve deep into the design decisions. Boy, that's a lot of d words. What's out there, mostly, are the Instagram style tours. Pretty Vans, pretty people, pretty locations, and usually, if not always, a pretty van dog. Like you point out, people get swept up in the imagery and are blinded to the reality. So, I've subscribed. Your posts are precisely the type of videos that DIYers should be viewing as well as people like myself, who design but don't build. Probably more important for people like me. There is a builder who posts progress videos on his channel called Humble Road. George goes into detail as to why he designs and builds the way he does. No, Humble Road is not building my van. Can't afford George, but I continue to watch his channel for ideas and the entertainment value; he's a funny guy. The major theme in the Humble Road van builds, is that everything has to be smartly designed, function well, and look good. Function is critical in such tiny, self contained and, expensive spaces. Even though my van is nearly done, I still watch Humble Road and like I said, just subscribed to your channel because, things change and there's always something I can learn. Thank you.

@@laur-unstagenameactuallyca1587 I agree with you. My initial thoughts were wrong, irrational, and distubingly dismissive (again with the d words?) After watching and commenting on Margaret's toilet video, I puposely waited until her next post to write & post my long comment on her work in general. The idea behind the delay was the hope that more people might see it, specifically, Margaret, if I commented on a newer post. I wanted my comment to be among the first on a new post for two reasons: (a) A not so subtle message to Margaret to keep doing what she's doing, there is genuine value to her work and (b) To tell people like me, new to Margaret, and who might view her posts and react, at least initially, as I did, to stop and think. I am pleased to see that more than 40 people have read my lengthy comment, and bothered to give it a thumbs up. I am hopeful that Margaret also sees this and gets a sense of how her broader audience appreciates her.

 @Carl P. WOW! Thank you for taking the time and energy to construct such an incredibly thoughtful comment! When it first popped up & I saw the length of it, I got pretty anxious, but as I read through my heart swelled! THANK YOU! I'd be lying to say I was completely confident these videos would be well-received. I sort of jumped into it expecting that a lot of people would really dislike me for a very long time. I even came to terms with the fact that the people I respect MOST on the internet (fellow vanlifers specifically) would likely *hate* me for pulling back the curtain on the insta-perfect lives we all pretend to have. Even more so for pointing out the imperfections on projects we all work so hard on… The biggest hope I had was to prevent some of the not-so-great van design ideas (the ones that experienced people notice & scoff at silently) from being repeated in all the van conversions taking place as we speak. No one saying anything almost felt like a disservice, like keeping my opinions to myself would just delay the progress of the entire community. Ladi has definitely been my biggest cheerleader, always reminding me that objective and respectful opinions about van design is exactly what this vanlife niche lacks. I’m thrilled to see you mention Humble Road. I’m a huge fan of George, and Ladi and I have mentioned to each other how he’s be the perfect guy for us to ever quarantine with. I can’t even begin to imagine how much fun the 3 of us could have, plus the complete craziness we’d be able to collaborate on! Never in my life did I expect to want to visit New Jersey ;) Thank you for finding value in what I’m doing. I wish more than this tacky comment could convey the gratefulness I have for the respect you’ve shown me now. I hope your van is everything you want it to be! What an exciting adventure to come!

If you want heated floors... the best I have seen in a van is Hydronic Radiant Floor Heating done by van life tech... and Humble Road Vans... they use radiant floor heating - they pull heat from the engine using a closed loop coolant system and a heat exchanger that heats water, then you pass the hot water into a mini hotwater tank (Bosch Tronic 3000T). Pulling heat from your engine helps the engine run cooler. But there is also a way to have a heater under the van that pulls fuel from your fuel tank and is very efficient - and you don't have to run your engine to heat the water. The Bosch Tronic 3000T has the ability to heat the water using electricity, but they don't use that function... it is just the best mini hotwater tank on the market with great insulation. Then you lay plex piping under the floor. Humble Road van shows you how he laid the plex piping while Van Life Tech didn't show us as they are protecting their method. But I suspect that Van Life Tech use a MDF board with inlays routed out of the board - which has great insulation properties and then use heat dispersing plates - what is called Hydronic Radiant Floating Floor Heating (if you want to google it - similar to this www.edinburghwoodflooring.co.uk/floating-floor-underfloor-heating/). Humble Road had battons where the floor gets attached and heat dispersing plates but used insulation below and used an air gap as insulation. Both of them were some of the best under floor heating ideas for a van... but I like humble roads quality of plumbing more... he had it arranged so perfectly. Although they are both geniuses. And if you are thinking about a shower - consider shower loop - a shower that recycles the water for endless hotwater showers - it is an open source system that you can build from parts you can buy at any hardware store - details here showerloop.org/

First, of all the van videos I’ve seen you guys are my favorites! Have watched most of your reviews and it’s interesting that you’re not a fan of induction cooktops which run minutes a day, but you “love!” their heated floor which will be used for hours at a time in winter. Pretty sure the floor heat is electric because no reputable van builder is install a hydronic system for young, inexperienced, likely non-mechanical clients. Saw on the “Tim and Katie” channel where they used some small low-watt heating pads under their floor (and batteries) in “zones” which looks like it might work.

I really appreciate this series. I love to learn from others builds before I make my own. My biggest pro for having a partition is safety while driving i - f you're in an accident. The Swedish Transport Administration did a crash test on RVs, and van builds, and it was not a pretty sight, and I can get that image out of my head. The difference between cars with and without a wall was huge. Maybe that could be another safety aspect to talk about?

The bulkhead design here with the entry door does give the van more of an apartment feel and less of an RV feel, which could be important for some. I have seen a bulkhead door that is a pocket door. If I decide to keep the cab space as part of the living space I would attach curtain tracks all around the cab ceiling with some homey looking insulating curtains and at least one swivel seat. I've seen expensive RVs do this. I've also seen and liked some bulkheads designed to optionally let some light through, one even with some stained glass.

The van is absolutely beautiful.. I do agree with your assessment. I watch way too many Van builds and some of the things I’ve noticed: weight distribution, keep your water and your electrical as far apart as possible, white is pretty but shows every speck of dirt, and power power power! Oh, cabinets that stay secure in transit😊 You should see the latest kitchen build from DualEX... he created a hidden chair that slides in to the kitchen cabinets. It’s pretty cool.

Loving these tours! We are currently in the middle of our second van conversion and I find it so interesting that some people really don’t think about weight distribution or seat sizing...

The insulated bulkhead plus always parking facing south could go far to keep van temperature tolerable. I'm really liking these discussions and would love to see you do more, even the professional smaller van customizers, such as Humble Road, and Tiny Watts Solar, etcetera.

I really really love the oven in the drawer and the clothes and extra column of storage in the kitchen. Also, didn't think the weight was distributed, and disliked the tiny bench. The ideal van that I'm building in my head wouldn't have a window at my back in bed, though it could have one higher up. It's cooler in the country where I live and so a cross breeze is less important.

LOVE your channel. You're so cute and funny and knowledgeable.. and articulate...some of my favorite things Thanks for the advice on the water weight. I've distributed the weight in my van well, but I hadn't considered the weight of "traveling" with full water containers. You're amazing and fun! Woot, woot! High, coronavirus five!

It's interesting that they said they had no heating or a/c in the back, but those heated floors (if they work like the heated floors in peoples' houses I know....wish I had some in my own) should heat up the whole space pretty efficiently.
@Greg-tj8rg
@Greg-tj8rg 4 года назад
How do people go about that typically? Is it some copper pipe with some fluid, heater and pump? I seen heated floors in some vans and they always just say it is complicated and they had it professionally installed.
@powwowowo
@powwowowo 4 года назад
Blurry Face the easiest way would be electric heated floors. Very thin and no fluids needed. Its just like heated seats in cars. But not really efficent to heat the whole van with this.

I'm really learning from the insightful comments. There are so many extras to consider in van builds; including the gray water under the cab and the weight distribution. Also I just subscribed, RU-vid recommended you a few days ago and this is your 4th or 5th video I've watched.

Wednesday! Yeah!! I look forward to your van tour videos top notch content. Constructive criticism done right it’s refreshing. This might be my favorite van yet not hard to fix the table/seating issue and can we talk about that bathroom it’s pro! Simple and effective. Heated floors...? You can do that??!!! 🔥😱🔥

I considered having a wall and door between the cab and living space but decided against this for two reasons.1) I felt having the swivels in the front seats really opened up the living area and made it much more spacious 2) As one builder I spoke to stated, should I not hear someone get into the front or wake up slowly or groggy and they are able to quickly hot wire my rig they could take off with me and my daughter in the back as captives unless we choose to jump out of a moving vehicle. Worse scenario - into oncoming traffic!
@colleenkaralee2280
@colleenkaralee2280 4 года назад
Yes, an insulated bulkhead would require a whole new set of security and self-defense features. without a bulkhead I would make a swivel chair and put thin curtain track all around the front and side windows of the cab, draping some homey looking insulated curtains while parking facing south. I've seen the higher end RV's have beautiful curtains draping the whole cab area when parked. Plus an insulating curtain as a soft entry to and from the cab.
@gloriouslifeonwheels3621
@gloriouslifeonwheels3621 4 года назад
@@colleenkaralee2280 I also love the idea of having a beautiful insulated curtain between the cab and rest of the van as well as curtains over the side windows. I think, however, that I may use bamboo blinds over insulated.inserts on the back windows.
