With over 5 million views on RU-vid, it was surprising to me to see how few people understand the best ways to optimize small living. I love Eamon & Bec and I was a bit defensive when I watched this video. However, you are giving your opinion based upon the design of the van and I think there are some valid points. The new van they are building improved the design and for sure will face new challenges. It is good to point out the hits and misses as when we are designing our vans we can be aware of the flows and try to avoid them. Or if you are going to repeat them you'll be aware of them.

Yes I’ve been surprised how many fans have taken this review so personally. Frankly, as a vanlifer myself, when you meet other travelers we ALL discuss what we’ll change or do different in the next build. No van is forever, because our needs/ wants constantly change (like with Ladi and I we will need a new van when we start a family) I only care about design, and I’m glad you could see that. ❤️

I personally don't understand how someone can feel defensive about these kind of things? Especially when it's not even their van? But I guess it's a cultural thing. I wouldn't be bothered at all about it. Feedback and criticism is always welcome you can only learn from it. Even when you disagree with it!

I absolutely Love Eamon & Bec, but for those of you saying that their New Van doesn't have a fixed bed, that's untrue....They do have a fixed bed in the new build..only the very end of the bed folds down and converts to a back rest position, but for the most part, where their (bodies lay) is fixed in position and (cannot) be moved.In other words it's fixed in place-. I watched the entire build every Sunday

I'm really digging these reviews! I'm a fan of Eamon and Bec, but I agreed with most of your points. There were always a few things about Trinity that I just couldn't get behind. Thankfully, the layout of a van only really matters to the van lifers themselves :)

Really love how respectful these reviews are. Little note: their new bed is only 3/4 fixed, for the same reason they didn’t have a fixed bed before ;) They just hadn’t found a way to host people and have a bed at the same time before ;)

I dig too those videos. I really like the perspectives you give us around those layouts. But don’t forget to include the dimension of the van in your analysis. In their new built Eamon and bec have a very different layout but their van is much bigger.

Thank you so much! "need to know the pros and cons" is exactly right. I find so many channels telling me what the builders felt came out right, a few telling me what they'd change, but for simply weighing the benefits vs. costs or pointing out what you need to be on the look out for, I can only think of this and Jarrod Tocci's recent series on how to go about planning your van layout from the ground up.

Really digging your review series. It's often portrayed as glitz and glam but I prefer the insight of what does and doesn't work. I'm sure you'll cop flack from those that feel the need to defend their fav youtubers but that's nonsense...these vids are actually worthwhile. Keep grinding! Once your new build adds an indoor shower nothing will compare to your build. The DIY and educational vids are really helpful too (saved the electronics one). Both of you are naturals 👍

Yes agree I don’t like ladders outside or even things outside hanging on the van because if you intend to travel in other countries you need to consider safety infact it would be best if it’s possible that the roof be only accessible from the inside.

Ohhhh I like that idea!! Haha I do also need to go through prices. I read recently that a van I liked was a $40k conversion and I just about spit my coffee. I find that to be pretty insane.

Yes they did design a second Van, but they did host people in their van and they also so had hangouts n tht van... Just an FYI as I've seen everyone of their Vids... Jst Say-in... But thks for the review... 👍🏾🤗🦋

Their new van is a 170 instead of a 144 ( which is why they have a fixed bed) they had to leave the 144 in Morocco but they will go back to it. They are keeping both! And the actually do transform their bed to couch mode every morning!

Their van doesn't have to be super practical as Eamon and Bec only travel /vacation in the van. They live at their business address near Toronto with sleeping accommodation, lounging area, washroom, kitchen , work and lots of storage space.

Eamon and Bec have a new Sprinter since this one it's bigger and much improved from this one.. they were more limited on space and budget in this one and I think that's why they did the bed like that.. you should review their new build be interesting comparison 👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

I find it funny that you critique them for the office-sitting situation by pointing out that you unhealthily lean back when working instead of sitting upright. I agree that having no option to lean back isn't the best, but you rather pointed out how you're not working correctly. ;)

To say they have a fixed bed on the new van is not 100% accurate. The foot of the bed (about 1/3) doubles as the back rest of a couch. With this design the seem/crack in the mattress goes across your legs and neither partner is forced to sleep in a crack in the mattress.

I think the point of that though is with their new setup they don’t have to do as many chores setting it up as night. They just have to deconstruct the foot of it compared to deconstructing the whole thing! Love this new van design though. It’s really the best of both worlds

I only watched one of those videos to see what they were doing with the bed! Glad to hear they recognize the same stuff. Sometimes these Van Tours can actually be more harmful than helpful to people who are interested in building their own vans. Loads of them just copy layouts from popular van tours. So glad you enjoyed the video!

Eamon and Bec have a fixed bed on their new van because they went with a 170 wheel base. If you want small maneuverable van a fixed bed means giving up open space

In cold climates the air under roof-windows gets a lot colder compared to the rest of the vehicle so that its is literally dropping down on you. Yes circulation is nice, but it depends a lot where you go camping if a window above the bed is a good idea or not.

I disagree on the need for two roof vents, as hot air is drawn in when hot or allows escape when needed, they are generally impractical for air circulation in very wet or cold weather, offer minimal insulation and all too often take up prime rooftop real estate. A vanlifer should always consider passive ventilation first, something as simple as a window/small hatch and a well located floor vent* (a floor vent allows for cool air in or cold air out) . A ducted or ductless rangehood over the stove is ideal as they don't allow moisture from cooking to pass through the living areas or sucking it around the cooks head like a central ceiling fan does. In reality, 14" fans are overkill for a van, at max they can circulate a vans air over 60 times an hour (commercial planes full with passengers replenish the cabin air a mere 20 times an hour at cruise speed) , are noisy, energy inefficient (1- 3 a/hr), etc; Whereas an individual 120mm, 0.14 amp, high static pressure fan combined with a low profile Mueller vent can replenish up to 6 cubic metres of air every three minutes (20 times an hour in a low roof van). A low amp hsp fan is very quiet and can be left running 24/7. * In my van build, I am planning to use a pop up sink drain (without overflow) in the side wall of the step well. Easily opened and closed, will draw cool air from under the van and roughly allows for 60 cubic metres of airflow per hour. tinyurl.com/y6bzf8dy

I like these videos. I may steal the black pipe idea but add a fill point that is lower. They make a water pump now that is handheld. It's about the size of a flashlight and has the hoses attached. It's a lot smaller than the older style pumps. Will you be looking at schoolies and panel vans as well?

Exterior water tanks are only good if you plan to NEVER travel to cold climates (pipes will freeze).

just to point out this was their old van - they learnt a lot from Trinity and their new van is amazing! (except possibly for the complexities of the shower! ) much better bed design and layout, lightweight doors (frames and rattan), etc.

So many of the DIY vans seem to have thick, clunky cabinet material. I think my favorite cabinet type involves 80/20 aluminum frames with a nice thin & light bamboo plywood. Like Ken does on ourkaravan.com/ (they have a RU-vid channel by the same name).

2 thoughts. First, I would think that Eamon could run a hose from his water pump up to fill the outdoor shower reservoir if he desired. The volume is not insignificant at 1.469 US gallons per linear foot, there is probably close to 20 gallons of extra water storage up there. Second, if you know, and bring up that they are in the midst of a new build, why show their years old build as if it were relevant? What works for them... Right? So, in the years of having their build, they changed their mind about a fixed bed and full garage. Third, bonus content, as they are based in Toronto Canada, it is Inconceivable that they would mount their water tanks under the vehicle. But again, that is a years old design.

Hey Brian, thanks for the long comment! In all honesty, I’m less interested in their new build because I pick van tours to review based on view counts. This van tour is one of the bigger of the genre, and therefore gains a lot of attention from people who are just developing an interest in the lifestyle. Even if a tour is 5 years old and the owner has the newest and best van ever, I’ll still review the old video if it has this many views, as it’s important to point out for those who are only just learning about design. Fair point on the shower option, but I would just prefer to not have to think about multiple water storage tanks, but that’s me. As far as the water under the van goes, I both agree and disagree. The reason I point it out is for viewers who are looking to build vans all over the world. We’ve had our water tanks below the van in cold weather, but we also don’t like Vanlife in the winter, so we opt to fly warmer places instead. In our case, it’d be fine to have water tanks under because they wouldn’t be in use. Every vanlifer makes decisions for different reasons, I’m just trying to explain the pros and cons of those decisions for the masses 👍

I thought the layout was kinda bad. They put a lot of emphasis on having people over. The pole is one thing but where are people supposed to sit?. They would all sit in one row staring into the wall while banging their heads into the shelves above. I don't think it could become more anti-social than that.
