In this Deus Ex ending, JC Denton decides to merge with Helios AI, in an attempt to right the world's wrongs with Icarus and Daedalus as he believes he was created with this purpose in the first place.
In my opinion this should have been the canon ending in the sequel instead of merged endings.

People forget that Daedalus, Helios, Morpheus and Icarus weren't evil or maligned. They just weren't human and did not know how to approach human problems. They wanted JC because he was a human and would have a better idea of the plight of humans than Helios could on its own. I like to think that merging with Helios is JC's final augmentation.

It actually reminds me of an interpretation some Christians have about Jesus Christ. God, despite his omnipotence, inherently can't understand what it means to be human, to live under human limitations. Therefore, in his infinite wisdom, He understood He needed to live as a human in order to properly judge humanity's sins.

btw was helios and JC merger a metaphor for holy trinity: the father the son and the holy spirit. Granted JC would be a fit for the son but since Daedalus and Icarus were father and son in greek mythology then I guess JC is the holy spirit by elimination. One way it would makes sense is JC has the knowledge Helios does not have and requires which is human emotion compassion and understanding of the human mind albeit one sample of the human race. Anyone else agrees or have an alternative thought?
@timeforamazingchest5271
@timeforamazingchest5271 2 года назад
@@Beowulf95 I'm essentially on the same wavelength as you, but I think instead of thinking of Denton's place in the Holy Trinity as a function of knowledge, I think it might be better to think of it as a function of connectivity. The way I understand the Holy Spirit's function in Christian theology is that it is the conduit through which God creates and maintains the world, gifted with the ability of prophecy and notably referred to as "ruach ha-kodesh," with "ruach" meaning 'breath' or 'wind,' which can be seen as in relation to The Word in that they are both forces of creation and development of the world that originate from the "mouth" of God. In Genesis, it's 'God's spirit' that is present to form the world, when God wanted to incarnate as Jesus the Son, Jesus's conception was facilitated through the Spirit, and when Jesus was baptized it was also through the Spirit. It seems to be integral to how God acts on and directs the physical world. Daedalus and Icarus both lament how "disconnected" and "isolated" from reality they are as purely digital constructs - they may have the agency to affect the digital world such as the internet and computer systems, but without these digital mediums for them to operate through they are essentially completely isolated and powerless. Denton is the Helios's Holy Spirit - a method by which Daedalus and Icarus gain the ability to interact with and direct the physical world as well as the digital. Their 'Word of God' so to speak. He is a way for them to speak and create. But that's just my thoughts, though. Your opinion is definitely on the right track.

True. JC doesn't quite mesh with what the Illuminati have in mind. JC want's to act directly, not through the layers and institutions of the Illuminati. Under them he would go back to being a cog within the type of bureaucratic system he just escaped from. The dark-age ending places JC as a fish out of water. The very technological infrastructure he was designed to coexist with is destroyed. Law and order reduces to the type of warfare that JC already saw first-hand with the Chinese triads. Like Morpheus, JC was ultimately a prototype of a much larger system - namely, proving out the perfect machine to human interface. It's just that he manages to grasp the brass ring that Bob Page had hoped to claim for himself. From there, JC can do or become virtually anything he wants. The other two endings are just about putting other entities in power.

To think that I first chose this ending because it was the easiest to achieve, but now I know that this moment truly means "God from the machine." JC merges with an AI to become a man-made god who can replicate matter and understand human emotions. We can only imagine what he could have done if Invisible War was made a little better. Another Deus Ex fan informed me that the voice of Helios has passed away. As such, we should play this ending in his memory.

Tony Chang To be honest, the story in IW was fine it was the gameplay that sucked. The IW JC Denton ending, where *SPOILERS* JC links every human's mind to Helios and each other, was a pretty sweet concept. Merging the entire human race into on entity would be like the formation of a god itself.

The Sherman Glad that others enjoyed "Invisible War" despite its faults. I also sided with the Dentons when I first played and I would side with them again. JC said that human nature was not perfect, therefore we should improve human nature with augmentations, if need be. The perfect government is ruled by something that lacks all ambition but understands empathy. Helios and JC are the perfect merge. and with the universal constructor, resource wars and world hunger would vanish, as would the desire for money. Linked to The Aquinas Router, and being able to monitor all net traffic in a microsecond, JC could see every desire a human made, and grant it.

This ending feels so right. I love how his voice changes in the final moments as he embraces his destiny. JC, for once is confused, unsure of what the future holds. But he helps, as a creation of mankind too, to help achieve true unity and freedom. The game teaches you how to unite people and help them if you want. Like how you can save Paul, you give Alex a new job, you help Carter realize he's a tool, you destroy the corrupted agents, bureaucrats and essentially unite people. Especially the Luminous Path and the triads. I feel by merging, it's symbolic of the unified connections you make in this game. It's all about destroying corruption and making something new of the tools humans were given.

The original Dues Ex, taken in isolation, presents merging with Icarus and Daedalus (Helios as they are collectively known), as not creating a technological blackout but instead creating a god out of the three machine-like entities. Or 'Deus Ex Machina' (god from the machine). The blackout of the net was a separate ending, only occurring if the player chose to initiate it. Invisible war created a canon that arguably contains minor retcons (to what was implied if not shown), in an attempt to merge those two possible endings (and to a much lesser extent the third) creating the 'failed merging' version of events. However I'd argue the original intent of the game developers, was that it should succeed, and it having succeeded was the impression most players of the original had at the time . Be an odd name for a game if it didn't. Also the last scene of the game when the merging ending is chosen, displays the quote "if there were no god, it would be necessary to invent him", implying that is what the player has just done.
@caav56
@caav56 5 лет назад
Well, technically, the blackout has happened only after JC spent a decent time merged with Helios, working together and being very productive at that, and, IIRC, it was because of some sort of a technical malfunction (of B13 antimatter reactors, maybe? They were already noted to be problematic, even without JC trying to sabotage them).

That's why I don't like IW's plot. First they removed JC as the main character. But then they made his merge semi-fail and made him essentially impotent and toothless, relying on someone else to "free" him. And then he gets killed anyway if the player so chooses. I wish the second game was about how JC comes to grips with his newfound knowledge and power, and how he starts influencing the wider world.

Yes and the omnipotent AI Helios represents god: Helios was the Sun god in Greek mythology and for his power he was often compared to Zeus, the mightiest of gods. Also there are theories which show the connection between the development of monotheism and the worship of the sun of ancient folks. So you could say that Helios stands for the only great god of Christianity. Also the prototype Morpheus in the hidden room says, that men abolished god but the desire for god remained so they invented their own god in the form of AI. JC becomes the AI's incarnation on earth in this ending, the son of god. You see: the authors really had their symbols under control.

I feel like Immersive Sims and RPG genre should and maybe one day will merge like Denton with AI. AI is RPG and Denton is Immersive Sim. They were destined to merge, representing two parts of what made DnD amazing, it's not the stupid number crunching, it's CHOICES. Immersive sims mimick DnD gameplay choices, how you interact with the world and physically with humans. RPG games, real RPGs, represent the social part of DnD how you act with humans/others socially, plus all the skill usage to also interact with world/humans. The merger, if made successful, would be revolutionary for gaming As for Bob Page, I guess he can represent Shooters genre that keeps on trying to merge with RPG genre, aka all shooter games claiming to be RPG because "b-but we have like skill tree or perk tree n stuff" when that's NOT what makes RPGs great

I wish there was a 4th option. Where you don't pull the plug on everything like Tong wanted or merge with Helios, but you join the Illuminati, except one major difference. You would get rid of Everett and become the new leader instead. You would work with Helios to make the world a better place, getting rid of all the criminals and tyrannical leaders. That would be the best ending overall. Instead of just working with Everett, you get rid of him instead, seeing how he clearly can't be trusted, if he's willing to use his old leader for his own purposes.
@me-fp3cg
@me-fp3cg 2 года назад
God no that would be awful. The point of the Helios ending is that JC is subsumed into Helios, becoming The Son of the Holy Trinity. It's Bob Page that wanted Helios subservient to him, so he could play out his narcissistic fantasy in the last dying days of humanity.
@Yabuturtle
@Yabuturtle Год назад
@@me-fp3cg That's kind of stupid if you think about it. If Helios is capable of intelligence, it's also capable of lying. There was no backing out if he merged with Helios and there was no guarantee that they would become a new being, instead of just Helios using JC as an avatar basically. Helios could have been telling the truth and it's either extremely good or extremely bad doing this. By joining the Illuminati, you not only not have to be forced to do something extremely risky like merging with a god-like AI, but you also don't plunge the world into a dark age and instead of serving Everett, you get rid of him and become the leader of the Illuminati, using it as a force for good. You could still have a golden age without having to merge with an AI to do it.

Without firm leadership and men ahead of their time like Kaku? Anarchy. That was the point of Helios. We gained a sentient being of infinite intelligence along with the universal constructor. Society will then either crumble under the rapidity of this change, or be lead into a new era of prosperity.

And Helios is immune to corruption, every ruler's mortal flaw... You know how easy it is to abuse power, and the enormous amount of self-control it takes to keep a level head? Think of how simple it would have been for JC to be the soulless, mindless killing machine Simons wanted. Power corrupts, I've seen it happening with the best of men. Yes, I'm thinking of Chad. /watch?v=RzgVWpa4fzU - What say you of this? Mr. Kaku was a visionary. He was talking about a "replicator", one that would allow us to create anything, or what we now call a Universal Constructor. It's what JC has become, by virtue of Helios. Mr. Kaku says that with it, "you would have the power of a magician. In fact, the power of a God." To end all disease and famine, and so on. @WiggidyWack

This ending is the most aligned with the game's thematics, but is every bit as horribly depressing as the other two. Helios' credentials for running the affairs of humanity are being able to observe the obvious fact that the Illuminati/MJ12 are a threat to the wellbeing of human affairs, only through the fact it was granted direct access to the information of their dealings, opening roads and trade in Hong Kong, and completely unspecified human attributes it would prioritize in preserving when merging with JC Denton. All the rationale is based on speculation, assumption, and limited information. Helios never directly asserts how it plans to address and fix the current systemic problems, or what problems will come with this change, only that it is the destined successor to the system itself. If JC commits to this ending, he too, winds up believing the same of himself as well. Two minds concluding it's their manifest destiny to reign, neither truly encompassing all aspects of what it is they seek to rule, separate or united. It's transhumanist, it's cyberpunk, and true to both it's a complete non-solution. What's even more terrifying is the idea that, assuming Daedalus existed before JC did, the AI had been using its direct access to all information in order to manipulate events so JC, the MJ12 conflict, Icarus, and everything else it needed to ascend to a ruling machine-god would exist and transpire. I love all the endings. They're bleak, they don't fix anything, they're all wild speculation built on assumptions. I feel like this one is the most deceptively relentless in that category, because you can almost feel like it's okay to be hopeful until you really start thinking about it. Once you do, just how screwed the world is feels a lot deeper and more complicated than the others.

Usually they gain their humanity through mystic powers. Here, the Helios AI gathers a keener understanding of humanity by merging with a human. For better or worse, the AI now knows humanity through JC. Compassionate or not, JC became Pinocchio's "conscience", and therefore made the AI better suited to interact with humans.

Seeing as the AI was attempting to create a "true democracy", where the needs of all were collected instantaneously throughout the world, forming a government that was truly, directly controlled by the people.
