I started taking DHEA after your last video on the subject. I do crossfit and have a very physical job. I started gaining a lot of weight once I turned 45. For the last 3 years I'd tried intermittent fasting, 56 hour fasts, carnivore, noom, WAG, everything, and just kept stacking it on. I started DHEA, and it's just falling off with no other changes. I'm so grateful for your channel!
@@playerone1431 I did keto after I had children in my late 30s and it was amazing, particularly with crossfit, but once I turned 45 nothing worked until DHEA.
Every now and again when I watch a video crammed with info, that answers questions I've had for a while and remember how in years past learning would have involved multiple trips to libraries and seminars I'm so grateful. Today is one of those times. Thank you Mike for sharing so freely.
When I take DHEA as a menopausal woman, I monitor my mood. If I get cranky for no reason, I know my dose is too high. That only happens if I take a higher dose daily. I take 10mg cream, in one dose, every other day. That works for me! You don't need a lot of it.
Your information is life changing in this space. Thank you for all your strong work. As a 50 year old trying to live with vitality your channel is so valuable. DHEA has definitely been game changer for me. Check your levels! Especially as you age
I'm 35 and a couple years ago felt a serious dip in my testosterone. I struggled to complete workouts, my libedo bottomed out. I can't say dhea is the sole reason that I've seen huge improvements, but it definitely gives me the extra drive I was missing to workout hard without struggling or quitting.. And now that I'm working out daily I've lost weight, gotten much stronger, and I'm living a healthier lifestyle and overall I feel like myself again and all I think about is sex just like I did in my 20s. Dhea played a role, in my opinion. Also multivitamins daily help. Zinc and vitamin d and all that is important too.
Why on earth would want to go BACK to obsessing over sex like a 20-something year old??? I am hesitant about taking DHEA precisely because I DON'T want increased libido. I don't have any libido issues but I think I would my mind if I reverted back to that. 😵💫
I started feeling like you at 40yo. Did not know much about dhea and went directly to TRT. I feel awesome now with energy but my libido is gone. I#m thinking in starting taking dhea now. Btw, my estradiol is good. I just want my sex drive back.
Really like your channel. This was an informative and helpful video. Supplementation with DHEA was key to recovering from the brick wall I ran into at menopause. My suggestion is to work with your doctor to monitor all your sex hormones on a regular basis. I'm doing that, and am on a pretty high dose for a woman, but the levels are regularly checked thru blood, saliva and dried urine modalities. Ladies, take care of your adrenals while you're young and you will avoid the drastic reductions in all sex hormones when menopause happens... and it always does. Best care of adrenals: stress management... don't try to be that perfect super-mom and pursue peace in your marriage. Last comment for Mike: try using a black or blue marker on your white board. The red was very difficult to see. Thanks!!
Menopause is natural. No matter what you do when young, you will lose your sex hormones at menopause. Dhea helps but only solution is replacement of the hormones and the only reliable way is pharmaceutical hrt. Period. Not soy, not yoga.
@@iss8504 Generally agree. The adrenal glands take over from the ovaries at menopause, so while sex hormones are very reduced at that time, healthy adrenals will prevent complete tanking, which dramatically affects the menopausal woman. That's not what anyone wants, and younger women need to be aware early and not find out when it happens. HRT is very valuable, but it's also very valuable to preserve the hormonal resources we were created with. Agree about soy, yoga, etc.
Thank you for providing a dosage guidelines! A lot of people talk benefits and drawbacks, but it's really easy to get nothing but drawbacks if the dose is wrong (and a lot of people think that higher dose = higher effectiveness)
The timing of this video is perfect Mike! I just ordered a Cortisol and DHEA test. The Cortisol will be tested 4x a day and the DHEA , AM & PM. If I'm trying to get a general baseline, is it better for me to do this on a (lazy no stress) Sunday or on a work day which is a better representation of my average day. I was also wondering if you could do a video on Pregnenolone (and DHEA) and when someone might choose to use one over the other. Also, thanks for the dosing information for women. I ordered 50mg but it looks like this amount would have been way too high. In any case, I'm waiting on my results before I start supplementing.
Great presentation I’ve used DHEA on and off for the last 30 years I’m a 70 year old man and I think it’s all good it’s just about moderation it’s not what you do it’s how you do it
Your show notes on dosing for women needs to be updated. It's correct in the video. Should read: "Dosing Women: 25% that of men. 10 mg/ 10 years of life divided by 4."
Hey Mike! I really enjoy the videos on hormones! Do you think you could do some regarding PCOS? Would love to hear you and some PCOS specific professionals discuss the syndrome.
I'm a 65-year-old post-menopausal woman. I was taking 25mg of a micronized form of DHEA and had my blood value of DHEA-Sulfate come in at 460. with the lab reference range of 29.4-220.5. My testosterone level was also high at 4.8 with the lab reference range of 0.0-4.2.
My DHEAS is 0.25, almost none existent. I have secondary adrenal insufficiency and now take 50mg a day. It might sound like a lot but considering my condition it really is not a high dose. I will have regular blood work to keep checking my DHEAS.
Perfect timing Mike! I just got labs back: dhea sulfate 98....testosterone 4....neither flagged but seem low! Cortisol 16....trying to decipher it all! 🤪
I'm a male in my forties and started dabbling with DHEA cream (and also pregnenolone) this year to optimise my testosterone. I felt great while using it. I did regular saliva testosterone tests and saw my test levels go up every time. I started using a DIM cream just to be safe. Finally I saw my test levels go up to and then beyond the levels of a teenager. The test company thought it must have been an error and sent me a free replacement test. While I still felt fantastic I decided to take a DHEA break for a few weeks until my levels normalise. Lesson: Dosage matters! This stuff is powerful. Best to do regular tests and not wing it.
Great Video Hormones are Tricky I'd go a slower path 10mg a day for the 1st month raising it by an extra 10mg per month til getting to the target you mentioned. People may end up needing less.
I'm a 47yo male and have taken 100mg of DHEA every morning for 3 months. It really seems to help even out my moods and I'm a little more motivated and energetic. Also it really helps with my allergies.
Im 39 taking at least 100mg a day by opening the capsules and dumping the powder under my tongue. the most I have taken is 100mg 3 times a day and that definitely makes me angry. 200mg feels really good. I barely even notice 100mg dose. Im also taking aromatase inhibitors, D3, zinc, grassfed liver pills, pine pollen, and more. I feel like Im in my 20's.
I’m 31 and I was taking 50mg a day and I ended up getting sore, itchy and puffy nipples. Pretty much ended up with gyno. I felt incredible though, amazing sleep and I felt stronger in the gym. Had to stop taking it due to the gyno.
In Australia, DHEA needs to be prescribed and is considered HRT. Thanks for the info, totally agree it should be considered before estrogen and progesterone.
@@alyssabrugman8479 customs stop it at the border as it is considered to be in the anabolic category. I’ve tried. But I’m happy with my bio identical prescription now. I can be sure that I’m getting high quality. Plus I prefer to be under the care of a hormone doc.
I started progesterone and estrogen and holy cow…. It made all of my perimenopausal symptoms so bad!!! Anxiety, insomnia, terrible thoughts etc… I stopped everything except progesterone and started DHEA. I feel so much better but it’s a very scary thing to through. Prayers to all trying to figure this out. We live in a day and age where we really have to be our advocate or you’ll end up on antidepressants and his knows what!
Thankyou for a very informative & balanced video. It was very useful. Thankyou for explaining the pathways of dhea's action. I'm about to start using the DHEA for severe chron's disease but have been worried (even starting at a very low dose) about further unbalancing my hormone levels-I'm menopausal) but you have reassured me greatly. Thanks again.
Mike I had heard oral dhea had poorer absorption and was more likely to go down the estrogen path compared to topical application of dhea cream which converts more readily to dhea-s. What are your thoughts on this?
@The Cedar is there any way to inhibit the conversion to e2 besides using some form of ai? I feel really good on dhea for about a week and then it seems to go south really quick.
IMO there's no added benefit to the cost of transdermal DHEA. Oral is so cheap and well absorbed, if one has high aromatase etc... it'll likely feed into E2 regardless of route of administration.
I’m in my 70s with chronic fatigue and low DHEA. My doctor put me on 5mg of DHEA and on the 6th night after taking it, I was awake most of the night. I need this hormone, but can’t deal with insomnia. HELP!
I am 44 years old, and I want to very cautious, but i would also want to cushion the effects of menopause from now. So I want to know if I can start to take dhea small doses ( 5 mg).
Im in Canada and we can’t get DHEA without a Rx and good luck getting it. A girlfriend of mine in the US was taking 100mg DHEA for a month!!! She said she felt amazing. She said her cognition enhanced, more energy. Prior to that she was having memory loss. She is in her early 30s. Is this indicative of some other issues at play?
I'm concerned that would be way too much DHEA for a woman of her age. I would guess that 5mg per day would be closer. She may be able to take a 25mg capsule every 5 days, but I don't know. I've considered spreading it out so I don't have to cut open the capsules.
At 9.1 minutes, you said women take 25% of mens dose, so for a 50 yr old women she should take 12 mg. At 9.21 minutes before that you said women take 25% less than men's, for a 50 yr old woman that would be 38 mg. Please clarify. Thanks and i appreciate all your info.
Pregnenolone is the mother hormone that plays a key role in the production of other hormones, including progesterone, DHEA, and estrogen. The substance is found naturally in the body, but some people also take it in supplement form to help keep memory sharp through the years.
Does DHEA supplementing help with Insulin Resistance? I have dhea-s deficiency (level is 42) I’m 37. And I have insulin resistance. Just curious if my dhea levels get better if my insulin levels will get better. I have better fasting insulin than I have in the past but my dhea is still very low
I just started taking dhea and the brand I am taking has capsules of 100mg. I am 50 years old so was wondering if I am taking to much. I am a bit overweight and don't excercise enough also but am trying to get back fit again. I am really taking the dhea because I heard it helps with dry eye syndrome so I am testing it out for that as I have suffered from this condition for about 25 years.
Hi dr.Mike...I am 48 year old woman from Indonesia. I have been taking 7 Keto DHEA that I got from my doctor. Pls make a video about 7 Keto DHEA.Thanks
Hi Mike - Thanks for such an interesting video. Quick question, I am a 56 male, 166 pounds. A recente blood test shows my Dehidroepiandrosterona (DHEA-SO4) at 406.00. I only take Biotin and Vitamin C, in the days prior to the test I ate sardines and vegetables while intermittent fasting to try to lower my fasting glucose (at 114), my lifestyle is a bit hectic..... Any ideas? Thanks.
HI, thank you for the great information! I am getting ready to begin taking DHEA after experiencing a pretty big decline over the last year and a half. I'm 57 for reference and have a pretty heavy fitness routine. I have seen multiple forms of DHEA, like liquid sublingual, pill sublingual, and pills that you swallow. What form is the best for absorption and do you have to adjust your dosage based upon the form you choose?
I've been struggling with low hormones for a couple of years... what are your thought on preglenenone? It seems to me its pretty similar to what you're saying about DHEA... which one would I pick? I am a women with 30 and already osteopenia...
Q. Does it matter when and how to take DHEA? Morning vs night. Empty vs full stomach? Thanks A. Yes, the timing and administration of DHEA can impact its effectiveness. Taking it in the morning is often recommended as it mimics the body's natural production cycle. However, some people may experience better results taking it at night. As for taking it on an empty or full stomach, it's generally suggested to take it with food to minimize potential stomach upset. Always follow the specific instructions provided by your healthcare provider or the product label.
Buy quality not quantity, and listen to Mike and don't overdo it. 100mg low quality caused massive acne problems extreme agitation and I lost all will to workout.
@@swamphawk6227 certainly for quality dhea, the gly/nac is good too but I use so much I had to find a bulk alternative, the bulk isn't premixed and doesn't taste as good still does the trick though.
I had been afraid of this one because I heard it can cause hair loss for men but I’ll look into it again because it does sound like a supplement that could benefit me.
Does dhea shut down or decrease testosterone and sperm production and could possibly lead to gonade atrophy? I read these information on some fertility websites. These claims don't make sense but I am not an expert. I hope you answer these questions
I’ve been on spironolactone for 5 years… I didn’t do my research in what it did to my hormones. 🤪I was just excited it cleared up my 40+ acne. What I’m trying to understand as I did go about 6 weeks on 10mg a day of your DHEA… I experienced the losing of hair, however I’ve been off the spironolactone for almost 4 weeks. How long would you guess that my hormones will regulate? I just got my results back from my blood work and my test is alarming low. I know that’s blood work and that can very depending where I am in my cycle. I just want a healthy idea if and when I should give DHEA a try again. Thank you for all your wisdom.
Mike, I’ve been off spironolactone for 5 weeks now. I’ve searched everywhere on the net to find info on how long before I can start taking DHEA. I’ve also been looking about how long it takes to increase my testosterone with diet/exercise with some added supplements. I’m 47 with a regular cycle and I’m not ready to consider injections or pellets. I want to try everything I know first sleep/diet/exercise.
Tests are expensive and my doctors don’t test this either. However I’ve found DHEA to be exceptionally effective for me. I can monitor it by how I feel. If I start to feel too tired or irritable then I take a break from the the DHEA.
I workout at a gym with weights and cardio for 5 days a week and power walk on weekends. I’ve been working out since i was in my 20’s.I’m over 60 and I eat a plant based diet with wild salmon and sardines. Is there amount that I should start with? I’m also be on hypothyroid med since I was in college because of my bad diet choices during that time. Thanks so much and I love your supplements and videos!
What's your thoughts of a plan B. Ie some countries don't allow taking DHEA. Is there an alternative to take, thanks I take Maca to help my hormones along with some Tonkat Ali and some other natural herbs to help keep my Testosterone Up.
I take 400mg and my test level is 600 and the upper range test limit is 700 , I have an autoimmune disease which tanked my hormones, I feel great on it except seems to make my heart pound so went back to 200mg which also dropped my test level to 230 ,it also raised my free t 8 points putting it out of range, but doesn't seem to effect total t,I'm on TRT as well. My question is will a high dose (400) cause other issues Someone with some experience please comment,Thanks Btw interesting info on your video Doc, thanks
i don't have menopause but just you know, DHEA raises estrogen and eareogen causes cancer: not just cancer but tons of tumors . i have developed a ton! as soon as i reduced estro my cysts also shrunk, i lost weight, and no more depression. i highly discourage anyone who is in their 30s and up, forget about DIM and DHEA
It's all about u derlying health issues, dosing, quality of supplement, etc. Everyone is different. What's might have not worked for you could be a godsend to someone else. 😏
Hi Mike, I LOVE your channel. A question: I am on bio identical HRT. Would supplementing with small dose of DHEA be beneficial for me? THANK YOU.😎🙃🤔🙂🧡🤗💭😇
Can saw palmetto help mitigate the hairless that a lot of people experience while taking dhea? I loved taking it, and definitely noticed an increase in muscle tone, but my hair began falling out. I stopped taking it for about a year and then retried it...and yep, hair loss again! It is very frustrating.
Was told to take it at bedtime because it supposedly increases GH. But every video I've watched or literature I've read, it says to take it during the day (i.e. may cause insomnia) Any advice on this?
I’m a 72 year old man. I workout twice weekly doing karate training and two to three days a week off road hiking. I have been taking 100 mg. Of DHEA daily for awhile now. Is that too much for my age?
I’ve taken dhea. It gives me horrific acne and oil production on my entire body, it feels like I’m a teenager again. No matter the dose, frequency or brand. Blood tests show I’m lower end of normal.
Pregnenolone may push cortisol when the sympathetic nervous system is activated (fight or flight). DHEA is on the parasympathetic side of the equation. DHEA may help coax the nervous system back into a non-emergency state (rest, digest & reproduce).
Pregnenolone is akin to an unmolded piece of hormonal clay that can, if you're stressed, increase cortisol. The cool part about DHEA is it's not going to back-convert to cortisol.
I am approaching 40 in a few months and noticed in the last year or so that no matter what i do, i just can't seem to lose fat and shape up like I use to. I've been taking dim and berberine and saw some changes in my appetite and how I feel... saw this video and started taking DHEA 5mg... didn't feel any changes so I uped to 10mg... and my body is flipping out. stomach feels a bit nauseous, headache... so I stopped.... i'm gonna be off of it for a while and start back on 5mg consistently and see how I feel. Thanks for this info.
As for when to take one's dose, and is it important to spread it out over the day/evening. Meanwhile, my board certified doctor said it was important to take it in the morning because his purpose (mine too?) was to reduce cortisol (i.e. in the earlier morning hours), I Haven't heard you address this yet at count #15:30
I lucked out and have poorly functioning cyp17A1, cyp19a1, srd5a2, and utg2b15. Wondering if DHEA night be worth looking in to since I cannot gain enough muscle to fill out my torso to be shaped like a guy. I train to near failure 5 days a week, hitting all body parts. Still nowhere near as strong or thick as my peers. Been like this even in my 20s.
@@Highintensityhealth how does a "hormones expert" access wether the person will benefit or get harmed by DHEA. Cause many people on the comments report side effects
If you begin to develop acne in areas you don’t usually have (in the “T”), do you scale back and by how much? I’m definitely feeling better, but wondering if I’ll also get clear skin back? I’m 43 taking 10mg. Recently diagnosed with HPA Axis dysfunction, never had PCOS.
I had some testing done and my testosterone was really low so she prescribed testosterone gel and to take a dhea supplement. I’m a bit nervous starting either. I try to look into anything new but I can’t find information about using testosterone gel along with dhea. Do you have any thoughts on this? Thank you for your thoughtful and informative content!
Just started taking this and it made me drowsy and extremely tired all day, fell asleep so early (female 10mg a day) Will the side effects go as this isn’t suppose to happen 🤔
Great video, thank you. What is the dhea normal level for a 40 years old woman trying to conceive? Mine was 78 last time I checked. I have been reluctant to supplement 🙃
