We finally get to diagnose my 1998 Mitsubishi 3000GT VR4! We skipped timing and luckily didn't bend any valves in the head.

Really glad you found the issue, now you can sleep a little better. Head up, Hurrican Ian with his vr4 build had issues with the gates kit, specifically the belt itself. Can't wait to see this thing driving around the streets more.

@@MiguelDsm careful on the oem belt+ solid - the issue is the oem belt stretches while the solid does not move to account for the slack (hence the factory hydraulic) the solid tensioner should really ONLY be used with a full kevlar belt that only minimally stretches. You can use the oem hydraulic + washer shims between the tensioner rod/pully to still allow adjustable slack +minimum slack tolerance. If you were out around tampa ever id pop out and help personally.

Yep, for sure, after welding all the cracks in the exhaust manifolds and blasting it and fly cutting to make it perfectly flat to mate the head and 2000° paint lasts far better then powder coat, Now starting the engine and finding out the hydraulic belt tensioner failed and let the new timing belt jump one tooth, now have a bent valve and piston and rod at the front bank of the engine. Just more work on a bone stock Mitsu. The 3SX alloy solid bolt belt tensioner is the trick to a perminate belt fix for less money.

You usually have to turn the motor 2 full rotations to TDC in order for the timing marks to line up properly. if in one when you line them up they don't match and it's way to far on teeth do another TDC full rotation and it should line up that'll show you how bad it really is.. if you couldn't see the timing marks and it's that far off from the timing marks on the valve covers I'm sure you definitely would have had bent valves. But definitely very glad the heads are fine 🙂. Always go oem Mitsubishi tensioner it's too risky to use aftermarket.
