The best thing about this episode is that while being great unto itself, it simultaneously spawned one of the greatest story arcs in Stargate. Set up and a payoff we had no idea we were in for.

Stargate Universe really went big with it's arcs when it wanted to. Actually, really all of it's arcs were pretty ambitious, so it was always awesome to seem them finally begin moving like this one here did. Not only that, but the fact that it always kept track of its consequences throughout the series (and generally, the franchise really) made the show so engaging to watch when it started moving.

It's so sad seeing Dr.Rush standing there alone aboard the doomed Destiny after everyone left for Earth. The only one on board truly committed to the ships mission, knowing what lengths the Ancients went trough sending it there and the importance of getting it to its destination. Now, their ship is doomed and it were all for nothing in their original timeline.
@TomalakGeretkal
@TomalakGeretkal 4 года назад
Not for nothing! They thought they'd failed, that they hadn't achieved the mission on Destiny. But, as they learned, what was important wasn't the destination... it was the journey itself. :D

Well the Ancients indeed went to great length to create the destiny and the seedships but they still abandonned the project once they discovered ascencion. You can't expect humans to pull it off it'd take such a greater understanding, one comparable to the ancients or themselves. Imo they did made it worthless as long as they abandonned it.

I loved SGU, don’t get me wrong...but I’m all the years that the Tau’ri have been using the Stargate, there have been numerous times where an active wormhole interacted with stellar events, namely coronal mass ejections and solar flares, causing travelers to be flung forward or backward in time...I find it questionable that nobody on that entire ship would pose that particular detail as a distinct possibility to occur in their attempt to not only dial a gate BILLIONS of light years away but also while INSIDE a star. And that’s precisely what ended up happening... Maybe I’m wrong, though, and I’m just forgetting that someone did bring up that possibility. I just know I would be 99% against that plan from the get go.

It's funny I've watched that scene several times and I never thought about that before, but as I was watching I thought, "Why? Look at the solar flares you're going back in time."

Aharit And that’s precisely why they thought they’d be fine. They had experience by this point, and Eli was a genius. They thought that his mathematics could compensate for everything, including the possibility of time travel. They were wrong.

You'd also think that given how often that sort of thing happens, the Ancients would have built in mechanisms to detect it... if not into the gate then certainly into their gate control facilities like Destiny's computer.

This series started out quite strong. The curiosity to explore Destiny by its little wayward expedition was there and the Stargate was used quite extensively in the opening episodes to explore planets in a similar vein to the original. A hint of politics in the form of the civilians vs military wasn’t too bad. In fact it inverted the stereotype of the military being unreasonable with the civilians being the one overtly being obstructive by taking control of the ship. And then it started focusing on the interpersonal issues. It’s important to note that I don’t mind complex character stories, and when you’re stuck on an Ancient spaceship with just a few people, it’s bound to happen. However it was given way too much focus. The darker tone overall wasn’t too bad. Whilst Stargate Command and the Atlantis Expedition were relatively well supplied, the Destiny Expedition is made up of misfits who weren’t meant to be there. It shows how SGC personnel have the ability to adapt and survive. I also liked how you see Destiny gradually come back to life as she’s repaired and inhabited. I like that they made her durable, not only surviving for millions of years but also taking one hell of a battering and have it still standing at the end. The discovery of Destiny’s true mission made things particularly interesting and gave me hope this would run for a while. Towards the end, it had started to recapture the whole ‘exploring planets and meeting humans’ thing from the older series...and then it ended. And it didn’t even end on a definitive note, it was open ended. It’s why I hate open endings, because it leaves you eager for more. And before anyone points to the comics as a source of continuity, the plots it used such as Ancients being on board all this is the biggest ass pull ever and so unsatisfying. In conclusion, it had potential. Had it kept the same sense of discovery and curiosity of SG-1 and Atlantis, I think it would have done well.

Yeah, they should've kept discovering new parts of the ship (e.g. engineering) as well as Earth make a successful dialing attempt. If this show went on for 10 seasons, the latter half they could've made travelling between Earth and Destiny possible. The reason Destiny couldn't dial Earth was that its storage capacity was degraded to 40% of the original, like a worn-out battery, although they don't mention what technology is used to store the energy or attempt to understand it. Certainly it would've been easy to repair it given how it is less advanced than Atlantis. Big bonus if Earth could dial them and send in supplies + manpower. Seasons 1-5 could've been on their own. Seasons 6-10 could've been where they finally are no longer stranded.

Honestly though. Every Stargate episode that had timetravel in it - it happened by a wormhole going through a sun. How the fuck did they not expect this?
@oswaldtime

It goes through the magnetic field of the star, if i am not mistaken. And they didn't know most likely, and what other power sources could destiny have used? We know that distance increases the consume of energy, and that destiny is very far away, and it destroyed the planet that they dialed from

Stargate Universe had great story arcs, but they screwed up and partly didn't last as long as the other series because it was too character heavy with the storylines. There was too much romance and interpersonal stories involved (and I usually love that). The other Stargate shows had interpersonal stories, but that wasn't what they focused on (sometimes they actually should've put a little more focus on them actually - Carter/Jack + Daniel and Vala, anyone?) Plus, they didn't introduce a villain until later in the show and there were some continuity issues. I loved this storyline where they spawned a whole new civilization, met their descendants etc., plus the one with the alien race that created a planet, but I wish they would've focused a bit more on that and less on who was having sex with who. Ugh there was so much potential here.

How does a single star provide enough power to dial Earth, but a ZPM is not enough? A ZPM is basically a microgalaxy in a tube. It should be more than enough if a single star works to dial Earth.
@-Draika-
@-Draika- 4 месяца назад
They didn't have a zpm. When they dialed Destiny they used a special kind of planet as the power source and they barely had any supplys with them when they left. Destiny never had any zpms and got its power by harnessing the power of stars.

@@TheBigExclusive ZPMs dint have the power to dial destiny, it was too far away. they had to use a planet with a naquadriah deposits to do it, similar to jonas homeworld. Also destiny can dial earth with the help of continuously channeling energy from the star by staying under coronasphere for an amount of time, destiny wasnt designed for this, so it was heavily damaged.
@deathbanner001
@deathbanner001 21 день назад
@@thehantavirus Not to mention that establishing a hole in a sun can generate distortions that change the destination or/and year of arrival. Since we do not know what happened to the others, we cannot say that they died, they could have reached another stargate that is in the same direction as the earth. An example of this is when Carter and O'Neill disappeared and scientists thought they could have gotten out through another stargate.

@eisenklad 4 года назад
there's only one gate that uses the 9th chevron, Destiny's. the moment SGC sees the gate still spinning after the 8th chevron, they would open the Iris. the chaotic nature of 9th chevron travel is probably due to various reasons, the primitive gate technology, Destiny and the other gates deployed by the various seed ship is before any milky way stargates. its probably the same method they seeded milkyway galaxy gates. lantean gates are probably seeded using Aurora class ships equipped with ZPMs the other reason why 9th cheveron travel is the energy requirement. travelling to Destiny required a planet to have a unique trait...probably naquadah formation that would act like a gate amplifier, but since its a natural formation and Destiny is way further than when the ancients built it, the gate overrode some safety protocols to ensure the traveller at least reaches the destination. so an object gets sped up as like water from a water tower (the higher the water tower, the more energy it holds = more working pressure) excluding a ZPM, if people on Destiny wanted to travel back to Earth through the gate, they need a Blackhole for the required energy
@Tamamo-no-Bae
@Tamamo-no-Bae 4 года назад
@@eisenklad I believe 9th Chevron travel is simply that chaotic due to the massive distance and power requirements. Destiny is billions of lightyears away, the 8th chevron networks are millions.
