Apple is known for bringing products into the mainstream. They are rarely the first to do anything, but they wait and try to be the best… or at least, the most popular.
Smartwatches have been around for a while but the popularity of the Apple Watch cannot be questioned: here are some hard numbers on that.
The smartwatch sector is growing at approximately 20% YoY.
Apple is the most sold smartwatch, holding over 33% of the market, with the next competitor only at 8%.
At the same time, by 2017 you could already find reports of the Swiss watch industry was on a decline, and the pandemic made it a lot worse.
Now as of today, Apple sells more watches than the entire Swiss watch industry. The gap widened in 2019 to 30.7M vs 21.1M. That’s number of watches sold.
Swiss watches are more expensive, certainly- but Apple watch sales for 2020 were $30.6B. The Swiss watch industry's total exports were valued at $15B.
Those are your Rolex, your Cartier, your Hublot- COMBINED. So there is strong evidence that could lead us to predict that traditional watches are a dead man walking: who would use one in 50 years? Heck, in 20 years. But it’s not that simple. Let’s see if the Swiss watch industry is really about to die. This is Company Forensics.

The thing is that you need an industry and eco system to support the production of luxury watches. At some point the market will be too small to sustain itself. Especially when it runs out of people willing to learn the trade if watch making and innovators. I'm saying that as a watch lover.

Before I bought my cheap Casio watch I always thought like "why would someone have a watch when it's so easy to see it on your phone", but when I actually started wearing it everyday I realized that when I'm not wearing my watch if feels like something is missing and I'm constantly looking at my wrist even though there's nothing there

All apple needs to do is to do is to provide some surface so they can ice them out. On the other hand hip-hop changes all the time. Sooner or later conscious rap or some other iteration of it will become popular and kill the image of rappers wearing ridiculously expensive jewelry.

Some things I would like to correct being a watch enthusiast. Firstly in most cases the demand for stainless steel luxury watches is more than precious metal. Secondly Omega is not semi luxury like Hamilton but rather the same level as a Rolex. The entry level omega is 3000. Lastly we like watches because of the craftsmanship and the engineering and as well as they what they mean to us.

I think maybe the trends will change so the watch industry must follow that river but that changes nothing, watches is a jewelry if we lose that 80% of casio g-shock market its not a big dill. Nobody who is not interested in watches as hobby spends 20000€ on AP. The nische market will stay for the collectors the same. Its like to ask a goth girl why she wears a old fashioned skirt ;)

There will always be demand for some sort of wearable status symbol for the prideful rich individuals, the watch is just another physical way to brag about your wealth while trying to avoid being obviously pretentious. It ain't fooling most people, but no one is going to tell walking piggie banks that in their face.

The “quartz crisis” is a misnomer that has been debunked by Prof. Donzé from the university of Osaka. The Swiss watchmaking industry was in need of a structural overhaul in the 1970 and it was initially overtaken by Japanese automatic watches. We saw the same phenomenon with Japanese cars entering foreign markets. It didn’t kill American or European car brands, but it prompted them to modernise. As for the drop in sales from the mid 2010s onward it has several causes, but fundamentally Swiss brands have been raising prices in growing post-WWII economies, only to come under stress whenever economic crisis make it so that consumers can no longer keep up. It is no mistery: we have had the 2007 Credit Crisis, the ensuing Great Recession, a bubble burst in China, which was the new promised land of watch sales. And now the COVID-19 pandemic. It is bound to compromise a distribution model that relies on consumers disposable income. That’s where the lifestyle watches have met with success, namely Daniel Wellington or MVMT, who harnessed social media marketing. I would not underestimate that business model.

As a watch enthusiast myself, I wouldn’t classify Apple Watch as a watch, but more of a device. I definitely wear my Apple Watch during my 9-5, just in case if I miss any urgent notifications, or when I like to track my daily movement (walks, exercise). It is damn practical. However you aren’t gonna appreciate it like a real watch and immerse yourself in beauty of complication!

Omega watches are not in the $500-1,500 range lol. Their average watch is in the $10,000 US. On their website their Tourbillon watch is listed at around $175,000 US.

Here in New Zealand, at the Omega store and other jewellery stores, the mid range Omega watches are around $14,000 NZ which is about $10,000 US, and the prices went up with some being in the 30,000 and 50,000 range and others going into the 100,000s. Their official website had those prices listed on it too.

Such an interesting video! I’m both a tech reviewer and also cover luxury Swiss watches. I agree with you on the point of analogue tech. It’s true tech on your wrist. Having said that, the apple watch and smartwatch boom has actually introduced more people to mechanical watches. As much as Apple Watch will impact a number of manufacturers, there will always be an audience for mechanical watches and as time passes, an audience for both!

How much I would've liked to consult on this video :-) First, please let me say, awesome video and very much in line with the quality of your other videos! I enjoy all of them very much. A few minor mistakes (like the explanation of the power reserve, or the notion that many will increase in value when only a select few actually do) that only idiots like myself will notice and even fewer of us are stubborn enough to think it could've been proof-read and corrected beforehands. One of the things that is hard for people to grasp before owning a luxury watch, unless it is a very flashy rolex on a person that keeps showing it to everyone within talking distance, no one will notice your watch. The portion of people who recognize a luxury watch when it's on someone else's wrist is so negligeably small thatmany first-time owners are somewhat disaffected and even disappointed after the purchase. Most of the people who recognise the luxury watch on your wrist are the ones trying to sell you another one. Other than the few people who exclusively buy watches to show them off, most collectors and afficionados see them as works of art that are appreciated for the craftsmanship that goes into designing, manufacturing and preparing the parts, and assembling them. Granted some watches work as status symbols (Rolex and especially Hublot to a certain degree live off the fact that they're being recognised) but most are mostly enjoyed by the owner, similar to a fine pair of shoes or a painting in one's living room. I do enjoy my watches very much, but other than friends who work in the industry or people you meet at collector's gatherings, no one else ever noticed them. Keep the great content coming! I agree 100%. Nobody care or notice and today wearing a high end luxury watch means nothing status wise as fakes are all over the place. Those who actually pay big for a watch are enthusiasts and collectors who appreciate the art of watchmaking and enjoy wearing them for themselves not for others to see.

No one need to be shy because of their cheaper luxury brand watch in a party or people won't be judgmental like before. Everyone has the same watch and only geeks will dig into stainless steel or aluminum watch body argument :)

Actually, my experience is quite the opposite. Many young people start by getting a smart watch and it gets them in the door to the world of real watches. Rather than saying the swiss watch industry should be afraid of the mighty Apple watch, I think they should be excited at many new eyes coming onto their products. Buying a mechanical watch does not share almost any motivation with buying a smartwatch so the markets don’t exactly compete with eachother. But motivating people to the simple fact of wearing something on their wrist will help the swiss keep their crown for years to come.

People don't buy a 12 grand watch to just tell the time - they buy it for design, expression, sometimes status, to commemorate a milestone or other life event of some sort, art, investment, etc. They're complicated jewelry that can be works of art and serve as a personal expression that happens to tell the time.

@@mono_log_ It's fact. While the function of a watch was primarily timekeeping, watches evolved to fulfill a plethora of use cases in addition to just timekeeping. Smartwatches are the most utilitarian watch type with limited battery life and resilience constraints, because it's basically a mini-computer on your wrist and then some. Traditional watches are less utilitarian, less accurate timekeeping items, and more of a functional jewelry + artistry + investment option + sentimental item; also more likely in most cases to be more about self-expression. G-shocks (like the Mudmaster) are utilitarian (not as much as the smartwatch), the most resilient watch on the market bar none, reasonably limitless battery life due to tough solar charging; can also be worn for similar reasons to a mechanical watch. While an Apple watch is superior to a Mudmaster from a strict utilitarian standpoint in regards to features (not including ease-of-access to utilize said features), they'll lose out to Mudmasters in survival/outdoor/tactical conditions. Watches aren't just timekeeping devices - they also comprise of a litany of other functions, features, and a multitude of different design types, based on what their use case for a target niche is and how people receive their design for addressing said use case. Otherwise, if the only function for a watch is to just tell the time, there wouldn't be a large market with different people buying different types of timekeeping devices, with different designs.

As an early adopter of "smart watches", my first being the Samsung Gear 1 and then Samsung Galaxy Watch, Galaxy Watch 3 and Apple Watch, I have fully transitioned to Swiss Automatic Luxury watches as of 2 years ago. I now have 4 watches from a brand new Oris to a 90's Submariner. I won't be going back to "smart watches" as the craftsmanship is world's apart from Swiss Made Watches. The perceived benefits of a "smart watch" wears off after time as technology and social media further invades our lives and privacy. It was such a life-changer not looking down every 5 seconds to see why my watch was screaming at me. To each his own I guess but if you're on the fence about a possible switch to true craftsmanship, my advice is just try it. Start with a nice inexpensive Tissot or Fredrick Constant. Move up as you start appreciating the connection to the craftsmanship instead of pseudo technology of "smart watches". Cheers! ⌚

Given the rich history of horology, excellent marketing by brands like Rolex and Richard Mille and the sentimental value of one passing their timepieces down to further generations, the watch industry will never “die”. In fact, it might just grow bigger as people are surrounded by consumer electronics goods and long for craftsmanship.

And I can add more, in some social situations, smartwatches in suits are for employees in the need of receiving alerts from work. But a good mechanical watch can tell you´re a boss and have some people to take care of your business troubles.

For me, I can't stand square watch faces, which gives off a cheap Casio calculator watch vibe. The Apple Watch also looks like the corny heart rate monitor devices no matter how much you dress up the band. Super tacky with a suit. Despite other brands offering smart watches with round bodies, the tech isn't as refined, nor visually appealing as Apple's.

WAIT Omega a semi-luxury? They start at about $4K or so and can go for dozens of thousands in luxury metals, not $1500. The Hamiltons are in the 500-2500 range though, on that I can agree

I have a Breitling navitimer, 55 years old lives in a drawer, too expensive to even get serviced, I have a 17 year old Pulsar on my wrist, unbelievable accurate and needs no battery. I’m also an apple fanboy even have my original 1985 mackintosh on a shelf in my office (still works) but for the life of me I cannot figure (yet) why I need an Apple Watch to compliment my phone, pad and desktop.

I´m a collector, have 38 watches plus an apple watch. In the end, the apple watch basically serves to check messages during the day. If it´s something important, you get the phone to answer. So, it´s a 300 bucks message alert.

I own a Casio duro and Intend to have it for as long as it lasts ... And then buy another watch which is similar to the duro at that time ... And the reason being I want to see time at all times ... I don't want to be worried that the smart watch battery is low , its not at all water proof and fragile when it falls .. the duro is a tank and will last for 3 to 5 years or more without a battery change ... Hence one less thing to charge and be worried about ... There are reasons why these watches exist and they serve a purpose. Happy for those who found their watch in an apple watch.. mine will always be the Casio duro ❤️

I’ll tell you this, even us who are into the Swiss(and other “high-horology”) watches almost all absolutely LOVE Casio. They are some of the best watches out there. Look on the watch RU-vid scene and you’ll see what I mean.

I can see a future where smart watches are sort of like the new quartz watches, cheap, precise and quite useful to the everyman. But a subculture of enthusiasts and high tech detractors will gravitate more towards the old tech because it is more durable, reliable and doesn't spy you all the time. Leave your phone at home and take a walk with your untraceable non smart watch (quartz and mechanical are welcome).

I'm still waiting for someone to go all in on a smartband. Microsoft (yet again) got so close. I do use a smartwatch. But really, even when I can charge it daily, it's a bit of a pain. I do still miss just having my watch work for years on end. And I do wear analogue watches too. From cheap ones for long weekends/rough activities to luxury ones for when I want to show off/make myself feel good (wearing the product of such skill means a lot to me). Many of those times I'd like a smart wearable too, but the practicality, status and appreciation of an analogue wins out.

I mostly agree with your points. What also needs to be mentioned is that automatic especially high end ones will last you for decades. They often are bought as a gift for yourself, (marriage, birthday, graduation etc.) and therefore hold a sentimate value. From a practicallity standpoint even as a timekeeper they are semi usefull, but I never bonded to my 100$ Huawei Smartwatch as I do to my automatics.

The thing about the success of Apple watches, and something you neglected to mention, is that as that market continues to grow it inevitably becomes less unique and desirable. I bought the first apple watch when it released because it was cool and new and exciting. When watches like this become the norm, which is quickly happening, more and more people will look for ways to stand out and be different to the crowd.

I think this video got recommended to all the Swiss watch owners. I see a lot of people nowadays wear smartwatch but you know when you walk into a room and someone comes up to you to talk about your watch that's when you really standout, this doesn't happen always maybe once or twice a year but I know that my watch will be with me for a really long time and won't be replaced by a newer model.

Amazing analysis. I feel that smartwatches might replace cheap mechanical watch but luxury watches have a whole different purpose. Just like how phone cameras have killed average point-n-shoot cameras, but enthusiasts still pay over 3 grands for DSLRs.

I disagree I think the whole point of cheaper watch brands be it mechanical or quartz is like many things the starting point into watches like many other things Its not like you blow your load or a 10k Rolex or 5 k on an Omega straight away you might start of with a $100 automatic timex or $200 seiko hence why Swiss luxury watch brands rely on the smaller cheaper brands its the gateway and starting point into horology. Lets be honest Apple watch price points aren’t cheap lol a decent cheap to fair price mechanical watch will outlast an apple watch

Nah, brands like Seiko and Hamilton are still out there strong. And even cheaper aliexpress brands like San Martin and Pagani are on the rise, not to mention some great microbrands. Mechanical watches have a different market, no matter what price points.

Just bought a $500 Gshock GST B300. Actually I didn't even think about owning a smart watch. Since I'm 18, I wanted a watch tbags more conversational then having a watch with a touch screen thag looks the same for the past 8 generations. I love my watch, and it definitely sparks conversations!

My problem with Apple Watches is that they rely to heavy on the iPhone to work. I know that now they have cellular network and you can leave the phone at home, but when I first saw them, I fought of them as a replacement. As a Watch only, I find them underwhelming and I just prefer a simple watch in comparison.

At 4:57, an automatic watch is a self-winding mechanism that is powered by a mainspring, similar to a mechanical watch, but is wound by a weighted rotor. The rotor winds the mainspring in response to the wearer's wrist movements. The mainspring is not a complication. That term is reserved for the features in addition to the hour, minute and second hands. An example of a complication would be the day-date or simply the date.

The only thing I'd like to add to this conversation is that my Apple watch will never create an emotional attachment. It is a cool piece of tech that I don't feel bad about upgrading and selling off the old one every couple years or so. The mechanical watches do create that emotional connection to ownership, and the only thing stopping me from having a collection of them is the freaking $$$$$$$$$$ of them. Great video

I still have my great grandfather's pocket watch. As one watch shop explained to me, it is the basically the base model that train conductors used. So, nothing to bring to Antiques Roadshow, but it is still beautiful :)

Sternglas, Seiko, Hamilton, Tissot. These are great options for under $500. Also Junghans if you can find one you like at that price. There is also the generic, but fantastic choice, G-Shock. They just released their popular "CasiOak" line a few years ago.

I’d still buy mechanical somewhere down the line. I appreciate the craftsmanship in those watches. And because I’m plugged into apples ecosystem and pretty happy with it on how they’ve transformed my health and all, I don’t mind looking dumb wearing both 😂 just when I do wear both, my Apple Watch will have to be inward facing of my wrist instead of outward facing during that period. But that’s just me lol

Also, its' important to mention that a smart watch is worth anything for about 2-4 years and after that, due to the lack of software support or battery issues or anything related to aging tech, it becomes useless. Swiss or mechanical watches on the other hand last forever.

Same thing happened to horse drawn carriages, when the car was introduced. It is called progress. However not everyone wants a watch that has to be charged every night, so there is still going to be a smaller, but real demand for traditional watches.

Love the graphic at the end, really succinctly sums up the market stratification and your comments provide a sense of vector of how that might grow. Smart watches will never take on the high end, Rolex sells to people who want to celebrate an achievement and purchase something that will last beyond their lifetime. which is why they sponsor huge events. I think the opportunity for mid-tier brands is to find complementors who can help that customer base get the best of both worlds. you've only got one non-dominant wrist. Woop for example could be paired easily with a normal watch, its discrete and looks like a band. those smart-rings are another option. maybe they can just wait it out to smart glasses become a thing and people drop the watch. regardless they are facing stiff new entrants and replacement risk, so there needs to be an intentive strategy, giving in is probably not the answer either.

I think there is a very interesting debate that shares some similarity with this "digital watchs vs. mechanical watchs" and it is "electric cars vs. combustion cars". The mechanical complexity, the craftsmanship and the engineering behind it add a different value to every side, so both sides' production will be kept but just occupying different niches in the market.

As a Swiss guy (and a big fan of Slidebean) and an Apple Watch owner, I think you're absolutely right - especially with your overview at the end. But next to "Swiss luxury" I think the segment just below this category, but with Swiss watches (luxury level, but not > 5K), will also survive, as some people appreciate the good combination of craftsmanship and affordability and don't care about the advantages of the sensor data and functionality of a smartwatch.

Watch prices just became ridiculous. One particular watch I wanted to get was 3,600 Euro when I saw it in Gallery Lafayette at the time (think mid 2000). Not even 5 years later it was 60,000 Euro.

I am in my 30's and grew up the same time as modern technology did. I like to have the newest and latest tech, and am an Apple fan! However, I wear a Mavodo everyday and will continue to value a timepiece over a tech piece. I just don't understand why people would rather have a smart watch. Looking at my phone when I get a text takes the same amount of time as looking at my wrist! I don't need a smaller phone, with less capabilities, on my wrist when I have a better one in my hand or pocket!

Classics won't die. Smartwatch won't look cool in 10 years. Everyone drives a modern hybrid car now adays but a vintage car looks cool. Everyone uses a smartphone or digital camera but film makes u look cool and seem like an expert in photography. Those luxury watches will look cool and make you elegant

Hey great video! Glad YT recommended it! I have been watching nothing but watch videos on here recently because I am in both categories. I own a Samsung Watch 3 Titanium (For hypoallergenic reasons) as well as mechanical automatic and quarts watches from reputable brands such as Seiko, Citizen, and Orient, (Swiss made is next.) Analog watch enthusiasts such as myself do not see smart watches as "the end of analog watches," rather a new generation of analog watch enthusiasts. Apple now made the watch normal (in our newer generation of course,) and with that comes more curious minds wondering about how watches came to be and will intrigue them to look higher on the luxury watch scale. I personal will always have an (almost) unhealthy analog watch obsession due to the sheer extravagancies of mechanical watch making. Features such as Solar power, Perpetual Calendar, and Atomic Time Keeping are just some of the recent marvels of analog watch making. Plus, the idea of being able to pass down some of these well manufactured watches to my kids/ grand kids makes the cost of luxury watches so much more reasonable. Edit: The reason for my first statement above is because I am of that generation. I started working a tech job and was engrossed in smart watches, then found my true passion for mechanical watches.

To me Jean-Claude Biver, a legend in the Swiss watch industry, perfectly explains why smartwatches like the Apple Watch are a huge opportunity for the Swiss watch industry. Jean-Claude Biver (in an interview with A Collected Man from March 20, 2018): “How do you sell a beautiful pair of Berluti shoes to someone who has never worn a pair of shoes in their life? It’s nearly impossible. Now, consider selling those same shoes to someone who has worn Nike shoes their whole life, it’s much easier. You’d say, “Listen, you had great Nike shoes, but now we have leather. Smell, look, feel, try.”
