almost 2 years since I stumbled upon the rabea heavy tones video. Had no idea what wet dry was and that it would change my life on guitar tone forever. Been playing for 20 years now and I’ve learned more in the last 2 years then I have in the previous 15 from you guys. Your by far the biggest influence to me and I really can’t thank you guys enough for your honesty and wisdom on your experience with music!

Probably about a year and a half here but absolutely same story. Playing for two decades and I was in such a rut with my playing ability and tone. Nothing about picking up the guitar was inspiring at all anymore. Fast forward to today and I’m absolutely loving my tone and it’s caused me to break through a wall with my ability and fretboard knowledge as well! I’m playing for hours multiple times a week and literally lose myself in the sound every time! Massive thanks to D&M and also a fair amount of love to the leg ends in the Facebook group! ❤️🤘

And now Rabea's live rig is back to more the wet-dry-wet complicated setup because after wet-dry he fell in love with the stereo effects.

I would like to second joe hoppard wholeheartedly. I find both Dan and Micks playing to be absolutely magic, in very unique and inspiring ways, and it’s been something to hold onto during difficult times. Micks blues licks are always piercing and emotive, and Dan’s rich, complex sound-scapes leave me in awe sometimes. Both of you guys simply play beautifully! Dan, I was so happy when gave me a shout out once!!!!! I think we were talking about the book Sapiens by yuval noah harari. Great read by the way. Anyway, you guys are awesome, and your playing in all the videos, but especially this one, truly touched me. The badass musical vignettes that you guys come up with to demonstrate the musicality of this equipment is nothing short of incredible. Watching your shows is legitimately one of my favorite ways to be spending my time. Keep up the good work!!!

Cool video guys! The true W/D/W rigs sure are glorious! Thanks for making this video to help evangelize this approach! Around 11:00 I would say the more common way than the mic'd dry amp feeding a mic pre and then the wet processing effects, was instead, using a Line Out Box or having a line out built into the amplifier. The line out was a line level output tapped off the output transformer with a volume control to attenuate the level to match up with the effects it was feeding, this is different from an FX Loop Send (or preamp output). The Line Out is what Steve Lukather, Paul Jackson Jr., Jay Graydon and others did with their Rivera Modded "Stage II" or "Stage III" Fender amplifiers. They did often have buffered effects loops added as a part of the mod, but for the Wet/Dry/Wet thing would use the line out and either load the Rivera amp with a resistive load (if they didn't want to mic the dry amp speaker) and then feed their stereo effects to a stereo power amp and then wet cabinets (and just have two cabs on stage with the dry and wet in both cabs) or they would mic the dry amp and feed the wet processing effects via the line out that were all in a stereo parallel mixer (except for chorus, compression, and maybe EQ), that would feed a stereo power amp and wet cabinets for L and R.

A working-mans version of the OG wet-dry-wet is to use a solid state stereo combo like Roland KC-220 / KC-990 to run your stereo wet signal. Your wet signal doesn't need a pair of boutique guitar amps. No guitar tech required LOL. Just have the house take the DI L/R out of the KC and hard pan them and your done. Run the DI into an Iridium cab sim if you need that depth. You can stack the KC-220 on top of your combo amp, or put the combo amp on top of the KC-990 to get the Left-Center-Right effect.

That is the most amazing take on the 80's rig ever. What is most shocking is that even with that much kit, it is pretty simple compared to all that wild rack stuff we had. Remains impractical as ever, but so amazing and so fun. Great playing, too. Lovely stuff.

No tone stack loss so pretty loud.Less versatile but loved by blues players. 2 of them would be glorious..didnt Jeff Beck use them at some point? Mick would probably know

After watching all the way through, I had to go back and watch Dan's opening schwang again. I was afraid having a peek behind the Curtain of Oz would spoil the magic. I'm happy to report it did not. Wonderful stereo mix, Mick, Glorious! Since adopting wet-dry from your influence, I've never put wet effects in my dry amp, and many times my wet amp is my Jazz Chorus running in stereo. So I don't have center dry, but I still love it. Thanks guys!

I use a TheGigRig Wetterbox to create a Wet/Dry using 1 amp by blending my wet effects in parallel to the direct signal. It's certainly no a true Wet/Dry, but it definitely massively improves the tone at gets pretty close to the sound of my wet/dry setup with two amps! And, I don't need to schlepp a ton of gear 🙂

I own one of the last of the great 80s rack amps, the Hughes & Kettner Access, a two-space rack preamp, now a virtual collector's item. It has a Midi Preamp with three channels, a midi-programmable graphic EQ, and three midi-selectible effects loops, followed by H&K's popular speaker simulator outputs in addition to the normal stereo outputs. The Access is meant to be a "Bradshaw rig in a box". The thing was to put a TC-2290 in the H&K's loops, and an amp head like my Mojave Marshall clone in the H&K's midi-selectable "External Preamp Loop", and you could have the whole wet-dry-wet rig just right there. It is so close to perfection!
@Durgo25
@Durgo25 2 года назад
But you can run a full Wet/Dry rig as well with only one dry amp and one wet cab. It doesn’t have to be stereo wet effects. The best way to do it is tapped off the speaker out with like a Suhr ISO Line Out so you’re getting the full dry amps power section as well with a variable line level control. This is how Bob Bradshaw does it (albeit with his own line out box). Then you run it into something like a Musicom Lab Paralelizer or even the RJM PBC 10 switcher which has a built in stereo parallel line mixer that you can turn on/off the dry signal at any time. From there hit a mono power amp and into a wet cab. And this is all on a pedalboard with only the addition of the parallel line mixer of your choice. Does not have to be a giant rack unit to get a full wet/dry rig.

@johnnybegood2693
@johnnybegood2693 2 года назад
... and most of all I liked how much fun you had playing! I think for the listener of TPS - having "only" the recorded impression - the wet/dry/wet is just more the way you're used listening to records, so that's the sound! I use the "TPS wet/dry" and it is just a great room experience and in addition an interesting form of sound design by matching amps/pedals etc..
@jsalmons84
@jsalmons84 2 года назад
Glad you made this! Multiple ways to achieve the same goal, but I think Bob Bradshaw and 80’s session players would disagree with your version of “wet/dry”. Full disclosure I have used your approach for years and I simplify it to “wet/dry” instead of dual mono for ease much in the same way guitar players call the whammy bar “tremolo” instead of vibrato. True wet/dry is beyond the average guitarist but is cool as hell for certain situations. I think the dual mono version of wet/dry that you use is more accessible and flexible for the average guitarist. I have found amazing uses for mono, stereo, wet/dry and dual mono with time based effects going to one amp only for various situations.

Thank you for this episode! I've been exploring variations of wet-dry over the last decade, so I was really interested to see and hear your demonstrations. I agree that for gigs a smaller footprint and straightforward setup for yourself and sound engineers is the way to go. My guitar is a Telecaster, but my main instrument of performance is an electric viola; I began experimenting because I wanted to maintain the viola tone, bow articulation response and clarity that I was already getting, and then be able to add and control the effected sounds separately. I've used one amp with parallel volume pedals - one dry the other 100% wet, two amps with the parallel volume pedals but the wet with some original sound (basically the TPS format) , two amps in series where the second amp is wet, and three amps set up wet-dry-wet with the outer amps in stereo. My basic wet is reverb - sometimes just the reverb on one of the amps, other times a reverb pedal with a big 0-100% range of level, tone, and length. I like smooth resonant plate or hall reverb sounds, and following that with a really slow OTA phaser, usually with both at subtle settings, but sometimes huge for what I call the "space viola" sound.

Finally you guys addressed the elephant in the room... this modern day wet-dry-wet isn't technically what we old time sound engineers / guitar players used to do. I was was running the whole wet (left) - dry (center)- wet (right) way back in the mid 1980's. And just like Robben Ford I needed a 20 space rack filled with stuff ! 2 different Guitar pre-amps running into two stereo SPX-90's. Those SPX's went into 4 channels of a 12 channel keyboard mixer that had 2 Aux(fx) sends on ea channel... so I'd send ea Aux to other FX units.. an Eventide and a Delta Lab timeline delay and those would return in stereo to the other channels. I also inserted compressors / gates on the pre-amp channels. And I had a full pedal board with about 8 fx pedals and a custom switching system / router that I designed and built because there were no companies making those things then. The Bradshaw system was $5k to $10,000 in 1986 money. I didn't have that kind of money. So I built everything myself. Built my own fx pedals, switcher / router, cables, even started building my own hand made guitars and finally tube amps. That rig sounded GLORIOUS !! But the rack weighed 120lbs and took a small van to haul it all around in. And every night I had to troubleshoot the gremlins... i.e. the odd ground loops / hum. It was a lot of work ! In the end... by 1991... frustrated I was suddenly struck by a thought..."Geez.. all this just to sound like a really good Marshall cranked.... and it doesn't even sound like that anymore " So I sold it ALL and bought a 50w Marshall head and two 4x12's... which quickly became 2 heads into 2 full stacks.... which slowly lead to hearing loss and insanity. ahhhhh so many vague memories.
@JoeGuitar
@JoeGuitar 2 года назад
LOLss... nowadays I'm running my pedal board into a 3 channel router that sends out to 3 separate channels (clean ch, crunch ch, lead ch.). Those 3 sends go out to any 3 of a dozen hand made tube amps I own / built.. The tube amp outs are all patched into a patch bay that I can then patch the 3 amps I'm using into 3 Torpedo Captor X's. Those 3 Captor X's have stereo xlr outs which I send , along with my Kemper stereo outs, into an all tube custom made 16 channel mixing console going into my UA interface. So I'm still running at least 10 channels. Now this rig sounds freakin epic ! All my amps are handbuilt / custom... 1968 Plexi, 69" Laney Supergroup, Dumble clone, Trainwreck clone, Jose Arrendando modded Superlead clone... and about 6 other custom amps. No more dry channel though.... it's all wet/wet. Ultra mega mondo stereo.

I run a split post-drive pedals. Dry signal goes to a Hi-Tone DG50 in the middle. The wet signal eventually splits into 6 lines that get remixed into 2 outputs that go to a Two-Rock Bloomfield Drive on the left and a Victory V40 Deluxe on the right, all 3 amps sitting on vertical 2x12 cabs. For the wet effects, a Harmonius Monk gets split to dual-mono, a Free The Tone Future Factory into L-R stereo delay, and a Source Audio Ventris into L-R stereo reverb, all run in parallel. I run the wet amps at around 69% wet mix. Definitely not a gigging rig... it's purely a piss-the-neighbors-off rig. The biggest challenge I have is balancing levels between the 3 amps, but once it's dialed in, it's epic. Many thanks to you guys for the knowledge and motivation to put this together. Curses to you guys for the money I've spent! Just kidding... keep up the great work!

I have done both of these over the years but for me personally in the end I prefer stereo with the stereo effects in parallel with each other. True wet/dry/wet I always feel like I am constantly having to change the mix to get things to sound right. TPS Wet/Dry or Dry and Wet/Dry I always feel like the wet doesn’t stand out enough and then I make one amp louder and I lose the character of the other. Stereo I just seem to be able to balance better and with the effects in parallel end up with a nice clear tone that is never muddy. Just all comes back to personal preference and your own ears.

I’ve ran my rig wet dry wet for years, a true parallel wet dry wet. The technology today is available to do this quite easily without the massive rack thing. The cabs you can’t get around of, and there’s a certain amount of size you need to deal with, but, yes, it’s a lot simpler than before. If you come out of your speaker out with a line out load unit, you can use some solid state amps for the wet cabs because you already came out the heat of your power tube amp, that will make the rig much smaller.

One of my favorite way to set up wet/dry/wet is to use an expression pedal to control volumes of both wet and dry but in a cross fader fashion. Heal down wet, toe down dry and all the mixes in between.

Exactly same for my new pboard just built. Use a mission volume, an expression, on both delay, reverb, and chorus. The board is purpose built and runs stereo into two Vox AC15C1's.

Fantastic episode. (Currently halfway through) I’d have loved to see a micro pitch shift in there as well, for the Landeau and EVH sounds. The chorus is wide, but the slight detune takes it to the next level! I think i’m going to put this together with my G-Major 2 and Stereo 2:90 for the Wet channels and everything I’ve currently got for dry.

Dan, I was a frequent long time listener to The Show and then 2 years ago took time off from all things guitar after playing live for 30+ yrs. You have taken your playing to a new level. I thought you were a little mechanical in your playing. Technically nice, but... Mic was the music man. Hearing you today, you are the music man! I hear joy and beauty in your playing. You made my day Cheers man!

Haven't watched yet but if this is about wether or not you include dry signal in The wet amp then yes I think you need it. I remember trying to play a dotted 8 delay with just delay in one speaker and it was a nightmare.

Great content fellas. I noticed over the years, and again in this video, whenever Mick wants to express someone being dumb, i.e., “…just crank your Marshall dude”, he breaks out an American accent. I used to get rankled with this until I realized when I want to express someone being a pompous a$$, I break out a British accent. No worries, great idea on splitting the FX loop. Think I will pan left and right wet with a Hot Rod Deluxe, 1966 Super Reverb combo and use my Two Rock Studio Signature as the dry. Should sound great.

The people saying you need to have 100% dry in the dry amp and 100% wet in the wet amps are really playing a game of semantics. The very first version of Bob Bradshaw's wet/dry rigs were in fact a 100% dry signal mixed in with the wet effects in stereo, so two cabs. A stereo rig. After that, in the second generation of these live studio rigs he added a third cab with 100% dry to give it a bit more punch and THIS is exactly what you guys call TPS W/D/W because the two stereo "wet" cabs still had the dry signal mixed in. It was only in what we could call the third generation of Bradshaw's rigs that he removed the dry signal from these two cabs. So what someone chooses to cal W/D/W is subjective in my opinion. My W/D/W rig has a flanger in the dry amp. Is flanger dry or wet? Not sure but it sounds better if it is included in my dry amp. Then I have modulation, reverb and delay in my stereo wet rig (2 separate, identical 100W amps) but the dry signal is left intact in those two as well. I think it sounds fuller and deeper if it's left in there. I do have kill-dry on my modulation, reverb and delay pedals so I can at any time cancel the dry signal using MIDI, if I want. But I choose not to because it sounds better. This might change and if so I simply hit kill-dry, but until that day I'll keep it the way it is and still call my rig W/D/W.

Guys, you're the one RU-vid channel for which I always click the thumb up even before the video starts. And then, every single time, by the end of the video, I've learnt so much that I feel frustrated for not being able to click on it again. Finally got the time to sit down with a proper headset for an hour and there's one thing to say: this one is another gem on this platform. I've been experimenting with wet/dry, wed/dry/wet and even clean/dirty setups for a while and this video brought me such a better understanding of what's not right in my attempts. Thank you soooo much for sharing all your knowledge with such joy and enthousiasm. I hope there will be some TPS band shows in the EU at some point so I can properly participate in supporting you guys. Much love

Evidence suggests otherwise. 🥰 And lest I forget, _THANK YOU_ for giving us the wet/dry with vibrato to create natural chorus. I modeled my live rig on the original wet dry video you guys did. I’ve found it’s the easiest and most reliable way to do wet dry in a gigging/ working scenario. I typically don’t use a volume pedal to balance the wet levels. I tend to find the in room balance at sound check and then make nice with the sound guy. I find if I promise to play at whatever volume they ask me to, not only do they eventually ask me to turn up, they are also mindful of the wet and dry amp levels in the live mix. :) Tone Bone Switchbone is a great alternative for splitting your signal if you’re still saving up for Dan’s fancy gadgets. It has clean class A circuitry, phase switch and a couple other features that make it simple for a small to medium board.

To me, wet dry means creating two signal paths, one with more effects than the other, and blending the two in some fashion. Just like with using pedals, there are no hard and fast rules, only concepts to be exploited to the benefit of your sound.

I have used WDW rigs for over two decades. I can vouch for the struggle of dealing with Sound-people. Many don’t even understand why a guitar would be stereo, let alone more than stereo. I put that on them! That said, a WDW doesn’t have to be gigantic: three vertical 2x12s; or three 1x12s. There are many tiny power amps on the market, and all you need to get spread is a stereo delay or a stereo modulation pedal (or ideally, both). I used three 2x12s for years, it’s not that large, or heavy, sounds punchy and massive (like a 6x12) when dry, and a wide & lush when the three signals are on. All it took was an Eventide Timefactor and a TC Corona. Everything else can go in front of the amp - as you would with any setup. Granted it is best for a power trio set-up or whenever there isn’t another guitar player.

I know this isnt Wet/Dry related, but the mixer on the board is related. U guys should do an episode on using a mixer to blend parallel chains and how that can expand your tonal palette. Maybe even explain the differences, benefits, and downsides between active and passive resistance mixers. I recently decided to add a mixer (DOD 240 Resistance Mixer) in order to blend clean signal back into my dirty signal, and oh boy, it is amazing. Im shocked on how such a simple thing can open up a massive world of possibilities. I have a Boss Eq-200 before my gain section that splits my dry signal to the mixer and having that blend option and the eq to shape frequencies before the dirt pedals without eq'ing my dry signal allows a plethora of tonal options that weren't possible before with the same handful of pedals. Using a passive resistance mixer does have some volume drop when turning one channel down, but having a boost after it (return back to Mesa Highwire) fixes that problem for me, but an active mixer would fix that problem more efficiently. I would really love to see TPS's approach to this topic in a future episode, see what type of sounds u can pull out of it, and teach us pedal nerds more about pedal mixers.
