I love Dr Karl. He’s been in the Australian media debunking health/science myths for a long time. He gets to the point and explains things so that everyone can easily understand. He has a wardrobe full of bright coloured shirts.
The sleep one really hit home. I was an overweight teenager and I remember being so much more hungry after sleepless study nights. I would eat so much in attempt to make up for the loss of energy
I still got this as an adult, it's a very delicate balance between sleep, food and training. Too little of the first two or too much of the second and I go from a perfectly fine diet to absolutely no food is safe near me. Like I'll eat (just about) anything, very binge-like, where-as I have no issues 99% of the time.
No wonder I've been so ravenous these past few days. I can't seem to have 8hrs of straight solid sleep each night. I wake up after 3-4 hours of sleep and then take a significant amount of time to fall back to sleep again.
There are quite a few, but, depending on your algorithm, you may need to do a search for them (and probably follow at least one) before you see them on your fyp.
I feel this way about all of social media tbh. Because now, the crazy dude on the soapbox (back in the day) now has a “verified” TT, fb, IG, or YT account and 1M followers. 🤨🤔😫
I don’t refuse to use it but I don’t check it every day and I don’t spend a lot of time on it and yeah I feel like people are absolutely bonkers for it
I JUST submitted a physiology assignment on hormones and regulation of food intake and I wish I had this video when I was doing my research and getting lost in all the literature - you explain things so well! Great video as always :~)
Can confirm as someone with ibs and bloating issues, kiwi did really help with the discomfort and I didn't even do it on purpose! A few months ago I was in the mood for kiwi, so I bought some, and started having 1-2 every day. No wonder I was feeling better than usual! 😂
I'm from Australia and Dr. Karl is a long standing national treasure! ! He does a weekly phone-in radio segment which is always massively fascinating and honestly everyone of all ages totally loves him. He literally knows everything about everything. Thanks for another great video Abbey!
So excited to see Nation Treasure ™ Dr Karl - and that you loved him. There's a whole generation of Australians who have grown up with Dr Karl answering weird science questions and of course, debunking myths. He even won an ig-noble prize for studying why belly button lint is blue (not ground-breaking science, but still a question no one had an answer for which is the true spirit of science). Fun fact, he has a whole wardrobe of colourful shirts, all sewn by his wife.
As someone with type 1 diabetes, releasing absolutely no insulin or very little insulin will make the fat (and maybe some muscle) come right off! *flashbacks to wasting away before diagnosis 💀 * If you have a properly working pancreas, please enjoy all the carbs you can! 😭 I really miss being able to just eat chips and salsa with abandon. And quality sleep really is so important for the hormones. Poor sleep can make keeping blood sugar in range so much more difficult. Ugh.
@@meganmcarthur899 I'm not an expert but I think in the case of diabetes type 1 where you produce no insulin at all, your cells can't take up and use glucose at all and so it stays in your blood and part is lost through urine. Then since you can't use calories from glucose your body has no choice but to break down fat and muscle for energy. So I guess in that sense you could say that insulin is partly responsible for fat gain, but you would be dead before long without it as it would lead to hyperglycemia. For people without diabetes, who always have enough insulin to maintain normal blood sugar levels, even if they are on full keto, higher or lower 'spikes' won't make any difference on fat gain. Whether high or low carb, it's the total calories and thermogenic effect of food that matter.
Dia-orexia is litterally the most lethal Eating Disorder. Pretty sure its the most dangerous mental illness. When I was sick in hospital, I met some guys and gals with this particular form of ED and wow thats a rough one.
I wanted to send out a big thank you to you, as your videos have been super informative and positive and have been SO HELPFUL to me. Your video on SIBO helped me get diagnosed with SIBO - I brought it up to my naturopath after noticing that my symptoms matched a lot of yours from your video, and now have an answer to the truly severe gut issues that have been plaguing me for several months. Your videos also helped me realize I never healed from my ED from 6 years ago and now I have finally begun to address the harm from that with a more intuitive eating approach, and it's significantly impacted struggles with depression over my weight. So THANK YOU! Keep it up, you inspire and help a lot!
Hi Abbey! Thank you for your videos. As someone who is recovering from an ED, I watch your videos as I eat meals for distraction and help so thank you again! I was wondering if you've ever considered making a video on anti-inflammatory diets/diseases? I hate the word diet, but I struggle with 3 autoimmune diseases and I would love to see a video on this subject!
Thanks for this! . There’s a lot of specious info circulating throughout social media. Especially on TikTok. So thanks for helping us sort the facts from the fluff.
Hi Abbey! I am a long time follower of your (on RU-vid) and I want to say a personal thank you to you for helping me recover from my eating disorder. I have never even met you but I hold so much love for you and the work that you do. Please know that your content helps so many people and please don't ever stop doing what your doing! You and others like you are literally changing the world!
My body: * has painful issues with bloating * Also my body: * has a very severe kiwi allergy * Me watching this video: * cries in gastrointestinal distress * kiwi is cheap but the $109.99 EpiPen I'd need after each fruit is a little less affordable...
This made me realise that I definitely do not eat enough protein! It's easy for me to eat mainly veggies and carbs as that's what I most enjoy eating and is affordable, but I need to remember that protein is important too.
Purple looks gorgeous on you Abbey! Thanks for the video. I was wondering if you could discuss cooking time/methods in relation to nutrient loss in food.
Hey Abbey. I was wondering if you could do a video on night shift workers (7pm-7am) and the effects it has on our hormones and body composition, and just overall health lol. Asking for a friend 🙃
I’ve got a question re: protein for athletes or in general actually: Are the recommendations regardless of sex? There always seems to be one generic recommendation but are protein needs/absorption whatever really just down to weight or is it just another thing that never has been really researched properly if/what differences there are in women vs men?
I'm no expert, but i think it's due to more of how your body stores fat and muscle, to the addition of what hormones you secrete, so maybe you should ask your doctor, but also Abby for her opinions and recommendations.
ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-h-wQJTzFvA0.html from like 48 mins in think they do a really good 10min discussion on the latest research around protien. Protien recommendations are actually more like per pound of lean mass. Since women in general have a high body fat % you would need less protiem per pound of body weight.
@@goldsnow2802 Thanks, yes, I also thought that there must be some difference due to hormones and difference in fat/muscle ratio but this is something that’s been bugging me for a while now. No fitness channel, magazine, blog ever makes any distinction but doesn’t mention it’s absolutely the same in men and women either. And I wonder why that is.
Im not an expert in this field of research, however I do cancer research- and what I can tell you from this is that there is a huge bias skewed towards the male sex in research. While in kinesiology and dietetics studies its more common to have human subjects (as opposed to cancer we often use mouse models or cell lines), I would pay special attention to the study design and subject composition. With this being said, I do not believe protein needs are solely down to weight. Women have complex hormonal profiles and anatomy, and this alters throughout our child bearing years all the way to menopause. Heck, it even changes month to month! Thus, a lot of researchers use this “variance” as an excuse to not study female subjects, whether it be human or an animal model. So in answer to your question, I think there is so much more research to be done!
Finally the video I was waiting for 😍😍 always love your videos and learning new things. I have seen so much shit nutrition advices and statements on tiktok omg! Thank you ❤️
Ooh that would be a great video. I once read a study taking about how smoking increases IR, but it confused me as smoking suppresses appetite, but IR usually increases appetite.
Dr Karl is an Australian national treasure! He has a show on one of our radio stations every weekday where people can call up and ask him ANY science question they have; his responses are always so thorough and digestible! He has about a million degrees in an array of sciences so he's a walking bank of knowledge. (Also, his shirts are always iconic!) So glad to see him getting some love from across the pond!
I can't wait to finally order a box of built bars, I have been dying to try them for the longest time! Will definitely be using your code 🤗 have you tried warming one up in the microwave? I heard they're great that way too!
OMG thank you SO much for explaining about the chlorophyll(in)! I fell into the trap and got two bottles and was about to order a third. Now I will save that money and just finish the two I got and will not continue 🤦
so.. kiwi... *noted* btw. I sleep 2-3, 5 or 10 hours. Nothing in between.. I should train myself to get used to at least 7 hours, damn.. I also don't eat that much, actually.. but I heard that's also the problem.. to eat less than 1500cal per day.. I just can't eat more.. or I have poor low calorie choices.. that's it, right?
The kiwi thing is interesting because while it can help, too much fiber can also make it worse. I used to take people saying that foods high in fiber could reduce bloat as “a lot of fiber = no bloat”. And he didn’t even mention bloating caused by menstruation which is kind of just..what it is. Lol I look pregnant at least a few days once a month since I started getting my period again. I just started to accept it.
Aw I am so happy you included Dr Karl! He is an Aussie icon. If you ever get to listen to him on the Triple J show/podcast Science with Dr Karl. You will learn so much, he's incredible
@@AbbeysKitchen he also has that condition where he can’t differentiate people’s faces. I can’t remember what it’s called sorry. Hi from Western Australia 🇦🇺
Great video. Informative and entertaining as always. I always wondered if someone like me, who is overweight should eat as much protein as 1.6g x my body weight 130kg. That would be over 200g. Seems too much cause it's the minimum you said for someone who is in a calorie deficit. Sorry for my bad English.
I would love an answer to this as well. I struggle to get above 125g of protein but still felt OK even when I was lifting weights regularly. I was around 265 lbs at that time.
Oh my goodness the one about insulin/carbs just put me at ease. I have high cholesterol and am trying to control it with diet. It was suggested that I start having oatmeal. Well I eat it after the gym and fasting. And other “diet experts” say I’ve just ruined my whole workout by having carbs as my first meal after fasting. ❤️
Sadly , my journey for help from the right dietician continues.. I have a history of disordered eating and have been suffering from gastroparesis ( I’m 34) and just saw a dietician ( for the first time ever) and she told me that I should come off my Suboxone !!! Even though my gastroparesis started way After my recovery... smh!!! So heart breaking , I waited months for this appointment!! Thank god for content creators like you though ❤️❤️❤️
@@AbbeysKitchen I won’t stop searching, thank goodness for my strong DBT skills I’ve learned through my rehabilitation program. I’m just so miserable.. I’ve lost 60 pounds this year , and it seems no one in NY can help me :(
The Australian Dr Karl is Australia's equivalent of Bill Nye :) He's done lots of amazing work over decades so it's so nice that's he's now on tik tok continuing to explain science to the masses. Please collab with him, Abbey - he's a legend!!
I'd really like to see more about those studies on insulin 🤔. Whenever I've looked into studies stating time restricted eating doesn't work, usually the methodology doesn't make sense. Dr. Fung even did a video breaking down how several studies were flawed. Personal antidote, a relaxed time restricted eating schedule (16:8), helped me stop being hungry all the time, binge eating, and slowly loose some weight.
Am I the only person out here not snacking? Abbey’s rundown of a day’s worth of food is so so so much more than what I eat. And my BMI is pushing 30. I eat one meal around 11 and one around 6 pm. Maybe split the morning meal into a breakfast and lunch. I’m not hungry more often than that. I’m active and work out regularly. How do people eat so much??
So I have a question about the sleep - what impact does the ‘deep sleep’ have on those hormones? Say you slept 7-8 hours but only got 30 minutes of deep sleep (according to a smart watch) would this have an impact on your leptin levels?
Yeah I sort of quit intermittent fasting and started taking in more calories and eating when my body is scraming at me as opposed to some schedule and so far it hasn't changed the rate at which I'm losing weight.
Can you please post a video on how to go about finding a dietician? I don’t even know where to start: through my healthcare provider or independently, etc.
I just came on here to find you and say thank you for helping me not be afraid to 'eat'. Thank you for showing us all what balanced meals look like, and for being a myth buster. Oh and now I want to try Built bars (your not the first one to recommend those)
i miss the times before i knew i was allergic to kiwi. :c Like yeah it made my lips and gums itch and sometimes caused blisters on my tongue and tonsils... but it was delicious and i had wayyy less bubbleguts... also, as someone who has had bariatric surgery, re: protein I was expressly told that I should be getting 60 at the bare minimum and should be shooting for somewhere between 80-120grams which is HARD when you can only eat 1/3-1/2 cup of food at a time
Dr Karl is an Australian icon! He is on our alternative radio station every Thursday answering the public's science questions! A bloody national treasure he is
After switching to a diet of STRICTLY whole foods, I havent had any bloating. And am finally "regular" after a lifetime of constipation. Bonus: I've also lost 105lbs! And it wasnt even hard, I dont count calories or restrict, i just cut out all sugar and processed foods. (Occasionally I will have some cheese or whole grain flax crackers/bread, usually gluten free. I looooove the Ryvita brand of cracker breads, especially the muesli ones 😋)
ha - 2 kiwi per day would be $50 a month here b/c local prices are insane. 6 small kiwi for $4.99! Plus you would never get that coordinated to have them all ripe when you need them consistently at 2/day b/c our stores have meh produce all the time. So one of those things that sounds easy but a supplement might be easier depending on where you live. (vent at bad access to produce, not at the idea)
sadly I am allergic to kiwi. I personally have found that peppermint tea helps with my bloating. peppermint also seems to ease indigestion for me, perhaps the menthol has something to do with that.
been following your videos for some time now and really appreciate your scientific and rational approach to nutrition and food. I am really interested in your take on the Asian post-partum (aka yuezi, "sitting the month") ritual, particularly the nutritional aspect. There are a lot of seemingly random diet dos and don'ts - ie: what foods to avoid because it can negatively impact milk production that really has no clear scientific basis, or what kind of foods you have to eat (my parents made me drink a ton of meat broth / soups for a month because of their magical milk-letting properties). On top of that the more orthodox yuezi practitioners force postpartum women to follow a set menu rather than their own body's hunger cues for a whole month, which seems very unnatural and un-intuitive eating to me.
As the working single mom of an infant I can attest to the lack of sleep and the starvation that ensues. Not only did I eat uncontrollably, but I was nauseous and exhausted, and could not bring myself to seek out veggies and lean protein. I was too tired and time crunched to make a nice energy packed lunch. So I was always ordering Chinese or a calzone or fat bombs from Panera. I could not make any headway losing that baby weight. It was very depressing.
Hi Abbey!! I'm not a doctor but work in nephrology! My coworkers always say that if you are eating too much protein (more than the 0.8-1g/kg) you are damaging your kidneys and we get a lot of patients like that. How do I keep myself from damaging my kidneys I'm terrified of dialysis.
Abbey please do one video on insulin and pcod. What should we pcoders do in terms of balancing insulin levels. With so much information out there it is really confusing.
Hi Abbey, I love your channel, I learn so much. You mentioned in you video here that intentional weight loss is Taboo in certain circles. I don’t understand why this is. Can you offer some insight here? Also, when this idea of intentional weight loss is some how wrong, I feel inadequate and there is something wrong with me because I do want to lose weight. Many people, like myself, don’t feel physical well or comfortable in our larger bodies and to suggest that we need too accept where are weight is at because long term weight loss is impossible, is discouraging and gives a since of hopelessness. Is there not a more encouraging way to look at intentional weight loss if you are an individual who wants to do that?
I have a video with my thoughts on intentional weight loss that you might find helpful: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-oNHLgIJBOqY.html
Have you or can you do a video about what to do when you have very low appetite. I'm on medication that can cause me to have a reduced appetite, so sometimes I dont feel like eating, I forget, or I'll have to force myself. I'm pretty active and am trying to work out 3 days a week, and really struggle sometimes making sure I'm getting enough to fuel my body. Any tips?
Here's Abbey's video on how to gain weight the healthy way. She includes some tips on how to eat if you have a low appetite or finding food unappetizing. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-EfXIliDwJOc.html
Dr Karl is the OG! He's one a genius, two a total Australian icon. His wife also makes all of his shirts and has done for the last 30 years. You should for sure do a collab!
