In this episode of Abbey’s Kitchen, Abbey is reviewing Fully Raw Kristina What I Eat in a Day, from a few months ago.
Kristina claims that she’s not a “big advocate of diets” but at the same time she’s specifically advocating for Raw Vegan Low Sugar Meal Plans and is pushing her app which is not so accessible since it costs money, and pushes a lot of specific diets for health.
Abbey hates hearing that classic buzzword DETOX, specifically HEAVY METAL DETOX. PLEASE GO WATCH ABBEY'S VIDEO ON DETOX AND CLEANSES NOW.
Abbey can’t believe these portion sizes. Abbey is all about the veggies, but she’s missing out on the fibre for gut health and will help you feel satiated. And think about how expensive that juice is.
Abbey definitely doesn’t own enough Tupperware to take this veggie platter to work. This involves a lot of prep work just for a casual lunch for one day.
(9:10) Again, a crazy large salad bowl. Granted, Abbey loves a good salad and is loving these colours, but the portion sizes are a little out of whack and I’m not seeing a lot of balance. Abbey would love to see some protein to help fill you up and satisfy you. Abbey wants you to know that don’t think that you only have to eat vegetables to fill you up. The reality is there are a lot of other food components that will do a great job to satisfy you.
Based on our nutrition calculations, she’s getting approximately 2500 kcal. Kristina’s diet looks good from a macronutrient distribution but from a micronutrient distribution she’s getting about 52 servings of fruits and vegetables a day and the recommendation is 8-10 fruits and veg a day. Most north american adults struggle to get the 8-10/day and what Abbey sees Kristina can get in a day is not achievable for the average person and not recommended anything. This is a level of extreme and displacing other important vitamin and minerals.
Likely Kristina is low in vitamin D and vitamin B12. She is getting a lot of fibre from the veggie platter and salad, but she’s getting way more fibre than the recommendations which can cause cramping and bloating. In terms of cost, Kristina does a video where we talks about how you can eat vegan for $20 a day which really adds up ($600 a month for ONE PERSON).
Abbey is 100% all for a plant based diet, but Kristina’s diet is expensive, time consuming and just not balanced. There are a lot of ways to do plant based well and this is just not it. Also, Abbey takes issue with someone who claims they are against diet culture, yet their clean eating, detox rhetoric definitely interferes with people’s relationship with food.
If you enjoyed this video, give it a thumbs up and give Abbey some ideas for some What I Eat in a Day videos that you want her to review!

I always had an aversion to smoothies and purees and thought I was just weird. I even think oatmeal is better when not cooked to a porridge, but just with milk and jam without no prep. Watching some of these people consume smoothies everyday and in the amounts they do always puts me off. I'd rather chew my fruit than drink it.

Plus is so much more emotionally satisfying to eat half a banana, a cup of blueberries, 10 strawberries, 2 cups of spinach, and a cup of almond milk than to just drink it! It would be difficult to eat all of that food on its own, because lots of times the potion sizes on smoothies are huge! There is nothing wrong with smoothies necessarily, for some people they can be really great, but you don’t need to be drinking them at every meal

So true about the extremes. I see this more often with my clients that they are so confused as to why they don't feel good - even though they are eating only vegetables and doing HIIT workouts everyday - when in reality, you can OVERDO the "clean eating" and exercise as well. It's something I talk a lot about on my channel because I don't think it's discussed enough in the health field yet. Thanks for bringing that up!

While I enjoy Kristina’s videos and recipes, I also really appreciate this video. I first went vegan 3 years ago and I was the healthiest I’d ever been. I was eating intuitively, not restricting myself, and listening to my body. I was doing really well! Then, I started following youtubers like High Carb Hannah, Freelee, Fully Raw Kristina, and so on - and my relationship with food became very unhealthy. I was doing high carb low fat, high fat low carb, raw vegan, constantly creating small lists of foods that I’m “allowed” to eat. These diets can be helpful, but they are often very expensive or unattainable. I would often mess up with such restrictive eating plans, leading to guilt. I learned about juice fasting and while it started out healthy, I stopped being able to tell when I was hungry and when I was full after coming back to solid food. I never felt satiated. I started using juice fasting to “detox” when I had eaten something not on my list. I went through phases of counting calories and being really restrictive, failing, fasting, and then eating a lot because I never felt full. I am only just recovering and learning how to eat a balanced vegan diet for my body again. I think that videos like these are really important. Yes, veganism can be incredibly healthy & successful, but we still need balance. Eating enough protein has been extremely beneficial in my overall wellness.

@@meliscucen8674 She doesn't seem to all the time now. In her videos it looks like she goes back and forth between eating raw and cooked foods. I think she said that she personally just finds that she feels her best eating mostly raw and that she finds it easier to manage her weight that way. I know she's working on another cooked food e-book now though, so because of that she's eating more cooked foods than she normally would. She seems a lot more flexible with her diet than most raw vegans I've come across, which I think it's a good mindset to have.

@@Rafaella819 Also where you live. I'm vegan and love my cooked foods. I wouldn't want to live without. I also spend about 30 EUR per week on food. In the US, however, fresh fruit and vegetables are unreasonably expensive compared to meat/dairy/eggs, especially if you think about what goes into producing those animal products.

She talks about not getting enough fiber from that juice but then says she got too much fiber from a salad. Really... @@CitiesSkyGay did you read past where I was talking about unnatural vegan? Where I described how Abbey legitimately is lying and double speaking. How she says Kristina is not getting enough protein, then at the end says she got plenty. How she says that she is not getting fiber because she had juice in the morning then says that she got too much fiber. How she says that oil is healthy when in actuality it raises cholesterol levels and coagulates blood. The funny thing about dieticians is that they are paid by unhealthy and nutritionally ignorant people to give them information. Key word = paid. The only way they are paid is if people continue being unhealthy, and that is what her advice does, it tricks people into believing her when she says 2 contradicting statements in all of 5 minutes. Also, where are her credentials, I didn't see them. Listen to what she actually said in the video, then come back to me and respond. Think for yourself, don't "let Abbey" a person on RU-vid getting paid by you by you watching her video, be a judge of anything. It's a lot of dressing!
@TheXfams
@TheXfams 5 лет назад
@@AbbeysKitchen It's a person's preference how much dressing they like. What does that matter? Some people like a lot of sauce on their pasta, some only like a drizzle. If you like less dressing, put less, and save the rest for later (eat it as a soup, or put it in a bowl with some nuts, and whatever else you fancy). She's suggested this in plenty of her other videos. Also, to TayukiVlogs... Many of her soups and smoothies can be anything from a smoothie, to a soup, to a "cereal", sauce for noodles, as well as dressing. It's not laden with processed sugars and salts so you can eat away, but it will go bad quicker. So use it quickly. (Note: the more preservatives something has the longer it takes to digest. Not everything, i.e. honey, grains, beans, dried goods, which are naturally preserved, but it's a general rule of thumb with prepared foods, like MacDonald's, or Twinkies lol)

@bobhummuswoszczyzna8999 The reason I stopped was because my whole day/week needed to be planned around my meals: what I was going to have, will there be enough calories, can I get enough to eat if I'm not at home, etc. It was really tough to do this. Also, I found it so hard to get enough calories. I'd have to have 2 big smoothies with 11+ dates and 7 bananas to get enough calories, and I soon grew to despise these smoothies as they became sickening from eating the same thing twice a day. When I didn't get enough calories, I would feel so horrible. I would feel way too exhausted to even get out if bed to make myself something to eat. I definitely think that there are people who can make this diet work for them, especially if they're trying to cure illnesses, but it just wasn't sustainable for me.

Kristina is such an inspiration! Thanks to her video's I juice everyday before my vegan smoothiebowl breakfast AND after intermittent fasting. My stomach and bowel problems are almost healed know and it is thanks to people like Kristina. Also you video is full of contradictions. First you say things are to low then afterwards they are too high? And money? I don't have enough either but I put my health on the first place! Health is worth giving the money for!! I'm not fully raw but 100 % whole food vegan and 80% raw. It changed my life for the better! I already healed CFS, fibromyalgia and Lyme. And yes, I had them al officially and it was a painful and depressing journey from 15 years! :( Now I feel so much better and alive! I am inspired again and lost 40 kg!! I'm better at 40 then I was at 20 and that is the truth! Al thanks to going whole food plant based!

I absolutely LOVE FullyRawKristina. She is a healthy inspiration. Always having had a positive relationship with food, I feel motivated and inspired by her videos.( I eat about 80%raw/20% cooked.) FYI, she supplements with protein powders, collegen and vitamins/minerals 'to cover all her bases' as she has said in her videos. She also has recipes for using the juice pulp and encourages her audience to adapt to the diet and foods as one feels is necessary to feel amazing in their unique bodies.

Hi Abbey - First video of your's I have seen. I am a whole food plant based vegan and enjoy Kristina's content. That being said, I found this review and analysis extremely well balanced, and thoroughly refreshing from the typical "fad fare" we see on RU-vid these days. I agree with most of your points, with a couple of notes. I do believe from data and personal experience, that the RDA for fiber is too low, I think 40g-70g is ideal once you transition to plant-based. I also believe that we can get easily enough protein from plants and that adding animal foods reduces the overall nutritional value of the diet and opens us up to other health issues. In small doses though, I can see animal products being an option for some people, just very small amounts as part of a plant-based diet. I also believe that evidence shows that most people are deficient in B12, vegan or not, and D3 is based largely on sunlight exposure to skin and supplementation, not animal foods consumption, so again, not only applicable to vegans. I do supplement both. Overall, great video, and I look forward to more.

I don't personally agree with a fully raw vegan diet, but I will say that many of your points aren't convincing to someone that also has a nutrition education. 1. Juicing vegetables is actually a fantastic way for someone to get a lot of nutrition that they otherwise would not be able to, especially Americans as you know. There are so many wonderful vitamins, minerals, and enzymes in that juice that would hard to be able to get if one had to sit down and eat them all. So, taking out the fiber really isn't a big deal if one is consuming enough fiber otherwise. P.S. Vegetable juice can easily be made at home for under $5/16oz 2. That hummus platter looks amazing. I take a container of hummus and veggies to work with me all the time for lunch. It doesn't take up my whole desk, that's a ridiculous exaggeration, and the only way it's taking me 3 hours to prepare that is if I take a break to watch 6 episodes of Friends. 3. Yes, that dressing sounds so good! If you look at your nutritional analysis of that salad, you will find that it has at least 30 grams of protein! That's hardly lacking. You even said her macronutrient distribution for protein was 17% for this day. 4. You say this diet is displacing other important nutrients and minerals.. like what exactly? You did mention the vitamin D and B-12, but you didn't mention that MOST people (Americans) are likely to be deficient in these nutrients regardless of their consumption of animal products. P.S. USDA recommendation for fiber is 14g per 1000kcal consumed, so 35g for Kristina based on this day. More fiber can cause digestive upset, but usually that's just if a person's digestive system isn't used to it. If she doesn't have any digestive upset from intaking that much fiber, I don't see a reason to be concerned. All in all, this video seems like it's more for entertainment purposes than education. I don't think it's responsible of you as a dietitian to shy people away from eating as many fruits and vegetables as they want and especially making it seem like they're not affordable. Of course if one were to eat raw vegan every day it would be expensive, but my guess is that 99% of the people watching this video are not raw vegan, nor do they intend to be. And your statement that this way is eating is time consuming is COMPLETELY subjective.

After getting to the breakdown, I was sure Abbey was going to say, "Well, I expected to find a lot wrong with her diet, but I'm pleasantly surprised that it's actually quite good." And then I was disappointed for all the reasons you just listed. Humans, historically/evolutionarily speaking, are designed to eat about 100g of fiber daily, 25g is the bare minimum for halfway decent health. We should all be aspiring to adjust ourselves and our gut biomes toward that 100g goal. Also, you can't criticize someone in one moment for juicing and getting rid of the fiber from a big pile of vegetables, and then claim they're eating way too much fiber. I mean, I guess you CAN, but then you just look silly. :)

And instant pots make the cooking process easy and quick. You don't even need to pre-plan a soak, and you can cook them with salt and aromatics from the start and make them really flavourful. as a vegan- i thank you...my point exactly! i was a raw vegan for a while until i got a hold of my doctor. I got blood tests, BMI test, etc and my own doc - who tried to discourage me from a vegan diet -taught me how to go vegan SAFELY. She gave me pamphlets and advice. when i applied the items from the list in the pamphlet - my iron levels went up...my B12 levels leveled out....everything leveled out. my problem with other vegans is that they dont go to a doctor and get help with it. Vegans NEED the advice and help of a doctor and NOT a "vegan guru" - I now cook my vegan foods as well as go raw on occasion....i also stopped mono-mealing. i like to binge on vegan buttered pop corn from time to time or vegan marshmallows....but there comes a time when you just need to have a balance....that is true for any "diet" out there. i had a hard time in the beginning with undereating that way and not spending the $$ for it was expensive....so i started to cook vegan and it saved me financially. Now i cook a MEAN vegan shepards pie.....or Vegan potatoes au gratin....LOL

I definitely think fully Raw Kristina is on the extreme side however there’s not a lot of inflammatory foods in her diet so no I don’t think she’s going to be suffering from bloating; my experience with going vegan and at one point going fully raw vegan is your body gets used to all the fiber and the bloating kind of goes away after the first two weeks then you really don’t start bloating until you switch back to a standard American diet.

I love her and I'm a subscriber and think it's wonderful she promotes clean eating (something I think we all benefit from) but I've also learned I can't eat just big plates of raw vegetables all day. I realized if I ever went vegan again and even now that I need to make sure I'm eating enough protein. I've learned on my weight loss journey that though lentils are higher in calories, I feel really good eating them. Mushrooms and lentils are staples and help me stay full with all the protein and fiber. I find I can eat quite a bit of fiber with not many problems, but that is just me. It's just learning what's good for your own individual body and being mindful of what you're eating. :-)
