I'm an actual practicing neuro in NYC, and I'm deeply appalled at this woman saying that "you don't need to eat dietary fats for brain health, bc fats don't cross the blood-brain barrier." That statement is wrong. I assure you that fats are VITAL for brain health - the human brain itself is >60% fat! Not only do fats cross the blood-brain barrier, essential fatty acids (EFAs) are needed to properly build the cell architecture (including myelinization) and biochemicals (including neurotransmitters) which are used in the nervous system. EFAs also serve an important function as messengers that signal the body to engage in neuroprotective activities and to start the cascade of reactions to build neurotransmitters, enhance immune function, etc.

THANK YOU! The "whole foods/plant-based" craze drives me nuts, and I'm vegan. There's no reason to cut all oils from your diet. Oils help you absorb fat-soluble vitamins. Fortified foods won't kill you. It can be harder to get certain nutrients on that diet, so why not do everything you can to make that easier?

I'm 66 years old. Back in the 1980s, I was healthiest on a Chinese herbal vegan eating plan. Recently, I became Type 2 diabetic. My blood glucose was up to 300-400. I tried Keto/intermittent fasting. The high fat/protein did nothing to bring down my blood sugar, even on meds. Finally, I tried the high starch, low oil diet. My blood sugar is finally almost normal (just above 100). Even working out daily did not help me. I'm shocked that potatoes, rice, oatmeal keep my glucose in the lower limits. We now eat meat once per day, but keep the dairy and oils low or not at all.

It has been scientifically proven many times that a high-carb, low-protein, low-fat diet maximize insulin sensitivity. Dr Kempner's rice, fruit, fruit juice (and if necessary sugar) diet, saved those with high BP on their way to certain death from kidney disease. He was also sought out by movies stars because of the success that his diet has on reducing obesity.

That’s a great rule for building a balanced plate :) just remember to balance the fats/carbs/protein & to be more open to fruits we call veg: avocado, cucumber, tomato :) There is a French nutritionist who teaches this was of eating and it has changed my life. 1/4 Protein 1/4 Carb 1/2 Veg Not limiting fats Carbs can be rice or bread, but if you want a ton of potatoes and 1/4 plate of broccoli that can work for the carbs and veg. Just keeps meals more balanced and reminds us to eat veg :) Sorry to rant, just liked your comment!

Every meal I eat is the same set up too. Its the consistency that works, not the actual details. I designed mine to be as nutrient dense and variable as possible. I try not to eat the same food more than three times a week for a diverse gut microbiome and to also not develop food intolerance (happens when you overeat specific foods). 1 fruit 1 green veggie 1 starch (gluten free as I'm intolerant) 2 servings of animal products (both different) Everything cooked in non-seed oils to keep my omega 3 to 6 ratio down. The thing is, I do not think about these benefits or why I do it anymore. I just follow my plan and eat. Same plan every single meal. My favorite are my gluten free waffles, broccoli cooked in butter, nectarine, bacon, and eggs for breakfast. I always eat a veggie at breakfast. I feel better that way.
@tarabooartarmy3654
@tarabooartarmy3654 6 месяцев назад
I do this also, but NO animal products. Animal products are high in saturated fat, which makes insulin resistance (and thus type 2 diabetes) worse and also raises blood cholesterol. I eat animal products a couple of times for month for B-12 and as a “treat” and my A1C is improving and when I get my cholesterol tested next months, I’m guessing it will be much lower. Keto skyrocketed my cholesterol and blood pressure as well as my insulin resistance. Now I’m using plant-based to undo the damage.

I think Dr. McDougal, Chef AJ, and Melissa Alexandria explains this way of eating a little better. Usually you start out with non-starchy veggies ie broccoli then have your starchy veggies. You can also add fruit. You avoid nuts, nut butters, and avocado only in the weight loss phase (so this is temporary). So later you can start adding the healthy fats. Oil is stripped of nutrients and refined (similar to the process of refining sugar) which is why it is not necessary to consume. Also, high oil and sugar concentrations make foods highly addictive. This is why processed foods are so addictive and should be avoided when possible.

Amen to this. Dr McDougall is the most important Doctor for food recommendations. I know this lady keeps making fun of the idea of “eat as much as you want” and “no calorie counting”. I don’t know exactly what the youtuber she’s criticizing says exactly, but I eat like Dr McDougall recommends. And those statements are absolutely true! I eat as much as I want. I eat tons of oats! I eat tons of grains and potatoes. I LOVE my food and I’m no longer addicted to food. I have been, all my life. When you eat a wide variety of plant foods, with the majority being grains or potatoes and plenty of veggies and fruits to round them out (including chia and flax and hemp). And some nuts and nut butter to boot, you get plenty of protein etc. Go read the Starch Solution by Dr McDougall. And go read Fiber Fueled by Dr Bulsiewicz. The reason most people can’t get around the whole grains issue, is that they don’t understand the concept of true whole grains vs ultra processed grains - which is the way most people eat them. I have no problem with hunger, or constipation. I found my ideal body weight, and I stay there. Never done that in my life. It’s been a year and a half. And I have helped 6 people change to this way of eating and they have all had the exact same experience as me.

As a WFPB vegan who has dabbled in eating high starch/low-fat, I am super grateful for this video and the valid science it offers. I felt my blood sugar spiking when I ate this way, and I was always hungry. My hormones were completely out of whack. What a mistake! No macro should be vilified, and I definitely see this mentality as a sign of an eating disorder. I also appreciate that you noted a vegan diet can be balanced--thank you. Yes. I am a very healthy and thriving vegan who doesn't need meat or dairy, but I certainly don't believe "fatty" vegan foods (Emmie's and other low-fat vegans' belief) or plant-based protein will make me unhealthy. I eat probably about 50c/30p/20f and perform well as a weightlifter and runner. It is truly all about balance.

I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes about 2 years ago. At the advice of my doctor, I went low carb. My A1C went down, but my cholesterol shot up along with my blood pressure. I also felt horrible because I don’t really like meat, cheese, dairy, or fatty foods very much. They feel heavy in my stomach, make me feel tired, and even make me nauseus. Regardless, I followed her advice for most of the last 2 years and just kept seeing my cholesterol and BP rising and she threatened at my last appointment to put me on statins. I said NO WAY. I am now following a plant-based diet, mostly whole foods, very low fat, and I feel better, my A1C is down, and I have a feeling at my next appointment (in about a month) my cholesterol and blood pressure will be down. I am enjoying this MUCH better, and despite eating 50-100 carbs per meal now instead of 5-15, my blood sugar numbers are consistently getting lower. I even woke up with a 105 morning fasting glucose once, which hasn’t happened to me since my diagnosis! Insulin resistance is caused my intermyocellular fat (fat in muscle cells, which normally shouldn’t have much fat in them.) This blocks insulin from bringing glucose into the cells, so it stays in the blood. That’s why it’s important to stay low-fat if you’re eating a lot of carbs. Plus, since carbs have 4 calories per gram and fat has 9 calories per gram, I can eat more food that I personally enjoy (like potatoes, fruit, and veggies) for way less calories.

I have been following the starch solution (what Emmies diet is based on) for 4 months. I went from 210 down to 172 and continuing to lose weight. I have noticed a marked increase in my stamina and overall health. My skin in better than it has ever been. My blood work - vitamin levels all is great ranges. Cholesterol has dropped from 219-130. Blood pressure is consistently around 100/60. Best I have felt since my 20s. My dr looked at my blood work and was very impressed. I do get a monthly b12 shot and I get outside regularly for vitamin d. I also have a serving of fortified soy milk in my morning latte to ensure some vitamin intake. My husbands cholesterol dropped 65 points in 10weeks and he recently ran a hills ultra while on the diet. His blood work was also awesome. Best lifestyle “diet” ever.

Your cholesterol drops because you quit eating animal products, not because you cut oil out of the diet or eat mainly carbs. But good if it works for you, i tried it too, and felt hungry all the time, and my food was just super boring and lacking taste without any oil in it. Can someone explain to me why some people concerned with "health" or "weight loss" don't season their food? Tons of spices and seasonings have decent vitamin and mineral contents, and I know in this video Emmie is getting her vitamins, but in general why wouldn't you want the flavor? Isn't food more satiating that way? And of course we shouldn't be drowning our food in salt, but would a pinch per meal really kill ya? I can't imagine eating anything that bland...

Yes!!! Most people don’t know that there is a difference between nutritionists and dietitians and it makes me so angry. Especially if you have health issues like diabetes that affect how you need to eat, it’s much more appropriate to see a dietitian who is educated versus a nutritionist that possibly has no education on the topic. There needs to be more awareness on the topic to help keep people safe. A meal plan or diet advice from someone uneducated could be highly dangerous. My friend just finished dietetic school and it’s very thorough and they have to do on the job training to make sure they’re prepared. The lack of distinction between the two for most people makes me sad!

I follow a higher carb, lower fat “diet”. That being said, this is boring af. You can follow the HCLF lifestyle but still include tahini, nut butters, nuts and seeds while also using salt. All of my salad dressings are tahini, cashew, tofu or even avocado based... you can in fact enjoy those things and lose weight (since that seems to be a focus of her channel/diet). It really isn’t as restrictive as this girl makes it sound. Then again, I’m not a HCLF purist 100% of the time. Yes I’m vegan and strive to eat more whole foods as opposed to processed substitutes but my goodness enjoy a beyond burger with some vegan cheese slices or some pizza with vegan cheese shreds. You don’t have to eat that stuff all the time but having them available to enjoy when you go out to eat and socializing makes life so much more enjoyable. And for the love of all things flavor related, add some seasoning to your food.

As a vegan for over four years, I am sooooooo tired of this ultra-vocal minority in the vegan community spewing this pseudoscience. The general population already thinks negatively about vegans, and these types of videos and super restrictive, purity-obsessed diets make my blood boil and reflect badly on even reasonable vegans. I like what you said about how abundance doesn't just have to do with calories. Many people in the HCLF vegan community have pasts of disordered eating, and giving up calorie restriction for a diet that severely limits the number of foods a person consumes seems like trading one disorder for another, all under the guise of "health." Veganism for me is an ethical choice. People like Emmie do a disservice to ethical vegans by making sensational claims about a particular, highly restrictive type of diet. I worry that people who are interested in a vegan diet will see videos like hers and either be turned away because of its extremism, or try it and fail because it is unsustainable and likely to create health issues in the short or long term. I eat fake meat, oil, protein, carbs, sugar, fruits and vegetables, nuts and seeds. I supplement with B12 and D3, and I do not think that my diet is going to "cure" or "heal" anything. I care about my health and try to have a balanced approach to diet and exercise.

Veganism is nearly always the last resort of the eating disordered for many reasons, incuding it's the ultimate excuse to reject nearly every common food, refuse to share in social eating with others, and eat nothing but low cal plant foods. I've seen it time and time again.That's why so many vegans come off as nutters on dietary issues. The most mentally ill ones using veganism as a mask for their restriction are the loudest. Alongside the ones who just want to morally berate everyone not at their own perceived 'purity' level, of course.
