The incredible soundtracks to Streets of Rage 2 and 3 were made by Yuzo Koshiro and Motohiro Kawashima. In advance of the Diggin' in the Carts tour in locations around the world, we sat down with them in Red Bull Studios Japan to talk about the experience of writing those amazing tunes as well as what it's going to take to perform them live.
Yuzo Koshiro’s close collaborator on Streets of Rage speaks to Nick Dwyer about composing for video games...

The two people that have shaped my life in music. Interesting insight!

Motohiro Kawashima really doesn't get the credit he deserves for his work on SOR man, everyone thinks Koshiro did every single thing.

finally a recognition for him :')

I've made a point to learn who did what. I still forget for SoR3, but I basically know for SoR2 now.

Motohiro Kawashima did nothing for SoR1 and was credited in SoR2 and 3 yes: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-n4OJJdSxPQk.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-dPBc6ure3tY.htmlm44s ...who didn't credit him was who not read the game ending credits. ;D
@MegaDriveProfile
@MegaDriveProfile 6 лет назад
Haha, yes of course he is credited in the actual game but when most people talk SOR they mention Koshiro but hardly anything about Kawashima's contributions :) EDIT: Also! Don't wanna make it seem like I am undermining Koshiro, because as far as I am concerned he is one of the pioneers of Game FM. That in itself is legendary.

Yes, I'm agree with you and the issue of the Koshiro's name on title screen 'music by'. Since childhood I give credits for Kawashima because I really enjoyed the reading of games credits but years later I knew from a interview telling about Koshiro which had the idea to compose tunes based on musics that were doing well at dance clubs, ghettos and discotheques on that time (Maxi Priest, Caron Wheeler, Blackbox, Soul2Soul, Technotronic, Enigma, etc.), so the 'music by' of title screen stopped being a issue for me. ;D

I remember playing streets of rage as a kid in the 90s and my mates brother, a DJ, coming in and saying “is that the Megadrive making that music?”. Thanks so much for the music guys. It has meant so much to me throughout my life.

The YM2612 was pretty hard to wrap your head around. That's why nearly everything apart from Toejam and Earl, made with GEMS sounds like garbage hahah. Koshiro mastered it and showed the world what it was capable of.

This is probably the most anticipated event for me, personally. Yuzo is one of my biggest influences, and what I heard on SoR got me thinking about making music of my own. I even made my own SoR album. lol

Streets of Rage OST's are THE beat em up style of music in the 16-bit era. Also "The Shinobi" will forever be top notch for all of shinobi games music imo, it set the feel for the entire game for me. It always gave me an 80's action movie type of vibe kind of the way "Feel The Impact" from Double impact did, or even the Tenchi Muyo! theme, something to that effect..all that being said these dudes is on point, always.

Very nice, it's great how they both felt the need to compete with each other but in a purely fun way. That is exactly how myself and Jredd work together. One of us would make something cool and the other would totally want to come back with something even better. As a result the music always benefitted and we both grew as musicians. With Yuzo Koshiro and Motohiro Kawashima that healthy competition and friendship led to one of the greatest soundtracks ever made.

Two legends of video game music making a live tour, how awesome is that? It's needless to say that Streets of Rage 1 & 2 are among my very favourite video game soundtracks of all time. They really added to the gaming experience, and pushed the Mega Drive's Yamaha sound chip much further than anyone before (and even after, if you ask me).

Yuzo Koshiro really made magic with fm chip and the Sega Genesis...I love all his work from all 3 Streets of Rage games..but the one soundtrack that will always stay close to my heart forever is The Revenge of Shinobi...Themes like My Lover, Terrible Beat, Like a Wind, The Shinobi, Chinatown, Make me Dance, The Dark City are reasons why i love this guy. Especially My Lover..that theme is my Number#1 favorite music of all time, And thats why Revenge of Shinobi will always be My beloved soundtrack from Yuzo. And all Streets of Rage Music will be my 2nd Favorite of all time.Especially Streets of Rage 2.My #1 Beat em up of all time

Deez 2 men right here, Yuzo Koshiro & Motohiro Kawashima, are fuckin geniuses! I didn't grow up with BK/SOR like many others have back in da 1990's, but listening to da OG trilogy's soundtracks(yes, the totally different BK3/SOR3 soundtrack also); I both thank & respect deez 2 men for legendary tunes in an already impressive 90's beat em' up series!
