It is time to dig up and store my Dahlias. Dahlias are some amazing flowers but do require some simple effort to keep and store them from year to year. In this video, I am showing how I dig up and store the dahlia tubers for the winter season. A true "how to" video.

Awesome how-to bud! My crawlspace tends to get a bit moist as it has a sand base, reckon i'd just store them in the frost free garage....

My first year of dahlias, I let them dry for about a week. Lots all of the tubers that year. They really only need 12hours to dry, sometimes more, sometimes less, but I’d rather divide wet tubers then let them dry out

Dahlias are pretty cool flowers. I tried some this year but forgot which variety I had planted. I did get some amazing blooms that bloomed over and over! Next year... I’ll be planning them out better.

Have you ever thought about maybe crossing some and creating a new flower? My uncle did that back in the 90's with orchids and they came out amazing and had the name patented

That’s me ordered 25 tubers as a mix of a few varieties to try next year. Hopefully they work ok in our soil so we can add more in future years 👍 The mix of colours you had this year looked awesome - it’s not all about the lawn... the frame is just as important

Dahlias are awsome. This summer was so hot mine did not bloom. Just yesterday had two buds open up. Fall weather did them good. Will be digging them up soon.

What area do you live in? Zone 4/Iowa here and both my neighbors and mine were slow this year compared to past years. It was a slow start for them to pop out of the ground and several didn’t bloom until late august /September. One of them in a partly sunny spot didn’t bloom at all.

I went and checked mine after seeing this video and they’re already pretty dried out after washing them just 4-5 days ago. :( Hadn’t yet made it to the store to get peat moss. I’m going to soak them in a bucket of water for an hour or so and see if I can reconstitute them a little. Maybe that’s a bad idea, but I’m going to try it!

Do you dig them to protect from freezing, or simply multiply and spread the crop? Often wondered if a thick layer of compost would protect them from the freeze, similar to mums in NJ.

Both reasons. More so to protect from freezing. They also have tendency to rot in the ground even if they don't freeze

On the "how do you remember all those names?": How do people remember all the names of football players, or of different models of cars, or whatever they're interested in? They are interested in it, and they deal with it a lot, so they remember it. If you like stuff, you'll remember things about it.
