Can the compact Kubota B2301 dig up these palmetto bushes and roots? Just in case the tractor can't handle it alone I got a hoss! It's not gonna be easy but the Stihl MS391 is here to back me up. I'm going to attempt this without a backhoe or stump bucket. Thanks for watching!

Wow brotha you need some gloves on! I'm wincing watching you handle those branches with your bare hands. Anyway. I live in Tampa and I just went to war with a 60ft x 12ft strip of palmettos just on the other side of my fence. I did this 3 years ago but did not know about their resiliency. This time I cut the palms to the dirt. then exposed the trunks and chainsawed slices and drilled holes in the roots. Soaked them in a combination of Triclopyr and Spectracide (weed and grass killer) mix. Back-braking work for sure. But I had an infestation that was threatening to move into my backyard! I'll tend to it now every 6 weeks or so, cutting the suckers down and applying herbicide until they are done-in!!

I’m currently battling a palmetto in my back yard. I’ve cut it back 6 times already and still new growth. I’m working on getting the roots out but it’s such a hard process when you don’t have the right equipment.

Wrap a chain around the base of the shrub, hook the other end to the back of the tractor. You get more root ball, and loosen the soil. Makes cleanup a whole lot easier too. Looks like you had a ton of fun!

For sure, but for me I have so many small palmettos to remove (acres) that I can't be bothered to wrap a chain around every one haha

@@WildBillyGardening Lol, yeah. There’s better equipment for your job, for sure.

@burkhola what would be a good suggestion? I've been just digging them out/using bucket loader on a tractor. Been thinking of attaching some longer teeth to it wondering if that'd make it more efficient
@critical-thought

@@WildBillyGardening A tree/bush transplanter (has an inverted cone to get the roots and dirt). Or a dozer with rippers. Also I have seen purpose built machines that could pluck out a whole field in a day or two - not specifically for palmetto, but would work for it. I have no idea who makes them or even what they are called.

A stick of dynamite might would've helped. Lol. I cleared my deer plot that was full of them. I cut the top with a bush hog then popped the roots out with a turn plow. Of course mine were not as dense as yours. You mentioned a stump bucket. That could be the ticket. Good luck!

Well done Haxman, it is a learning curve to operate that Kubota. Your right, that saw is overkill, but i like it.

I bought a B series, new in 2014. Trust me when I tell you, there are things your gonna want to do that having the backhoe is worth it’s weight in gold! Also check into the skid steer adapter for the front bucket, that way you can latch other attachments on the loader, pallet forks, boom arm etc. The forks are really handy! Put heavy stuff on pallets, easy to move around. 👍

Reminds me of when I had to remove a Yucca tree and wrapped a cable around it to pull it out and the steel cable sliced through it like a cheese cutter. When I lived in California no yucca plant in Minnesota. Cool music Haxman.

I did this about 20 years ago never again if you miss one root ball you'll be doing it again and again. Good luck I'll be watching to see how it all comes out.

No doubt an excavator would have been more appropriate. Palmettos are just a nightmare to remove otherwise. Thanks!

Had to get rid of tons of palmettos by hand, still have a bunch. They're tough sobs. The best way I found is the to cut the surface level then move the area as they try to peek back up. This kills them eventually. Def better with a tractor though.

They are hard to transplant around here. My one palmetto seems to be declining in size although it is 20 years old.

They 've been clearing land around me and charge $1500-3000 depending the size and the palmettos grow straight back because they don't go deep enough in the ground. with the machines. 11:44 They have to redo it . I got rid of mine with a chainsaw, hatchet, vinegar, salt and for 2 clusters from hell, I used a bit of clorox bleach with the salt. And no, you can not burn palmetto stumps. I think they can withstand a nuclear attack. It's an amazing plant and the lower part is edible

We had a whole fence line of these nasty palmettos taken out. It wasn’t done right. A guy came in with a machine, cleared and chopped them all at once leaving roots everywhere. He had to come back move piles of debris into back woods. Then another guy came back. He had to pull out so many still sticking up under the dirt. Things still haven’t been leveled right & it cost us $5000!

No. They are very green and full of water. Even when you hit them with an axe they just absorb the impact and hold the axe 😕
