I play a Magic: the Gathering Online Legacy league with a dinosaur cascade deck featuring Trumpeting Carnosaur and Creative Technique. Also known as Mississippi River, this deck attempts to repeatedly cascade or discover into Creative Technique, and then clone Trumpeting Carnosaur to continue the chain. Ultimately you'll win the game with a hasted squad off of Maelstrom Wanderer or an extra turn with Emrakul, the Aeons Torn. Mississippi River is infinitely better than the completely worthless "Golgari Midrange" or "Rakdos Midrange" or what have you. Mississippi River and Cephalid Breakfast are incredible deck names and we need more decks named like that. Scam is cool too, I like Scam.

@@ThrabenUniversity I get that to an extent, but I don't think using Ravnica guilds as substitutes for colors works either. I remember when Bant CoCo was a standard deck and my dumbass who liked Alara block that Bant proper was coming back. Nope, just Bant colors. Generic descriptors like Midrange are fine, but giving them some kind of uniqueness also helps. I was trying to show my friend a video of the old Ixalan Wildgrowth Walker deck and had to sift through years upon years of unrelated "golgari midrange" when it could have been called Explorer Midrange, Wildgrowth Midrange, or something like that.

@@ThrabenUniversity The main reason I *like* deck names like Mississippi River is I know exactly what that deck is. And a new or uninvested player who doesn't know can easily look it up. There's upsides and downsides to both approaches for sure.

The current deck naming scheme: Does it kill by turn 4? Combo. Does it have one piece of removal or a counter spell? Control. Does it have Green creatures? Stompy. Everything else: Mid-range.

Cool deck, Phil! ;) Nice league! PS. The sideboard cards in my version of this deck were: 4 Leyline of the Void ; just because Reanimator and Oops are too fast. 2 Otawara, Soaring City ; Just a generic answer to problematic permanents - the deck often beats fair decks as long as you can rid of specific lock pieces post-board ;; it's very slow though, so I've been up and down on them. 1 Karakas ; Thalia is very good versus us, it helps versus other Show decks, fast Depths variants, and it's another card that does something vs Reanimator. Didn't get it to fit main, but you could play a bunch of these. Where this card is applicable it's way better than Otawara, but naturally far more narrow. 1 Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger ; This is to blow up nonsense like Ensnaring Bridge and Glacial Chasm - if you're going off you can typically get to it; mostly on your extra turns. And it can be a better early hit than something like Jokulhaups. 3 Chandra, Awakened Inferno ; Great against UWx decks whose whole game plan is to lock you out with T3feri while protecting it with counters.. debatable against Hydroblasts though. 2 Rough/Tumble ; Not sure, but wanted something against the some of the fast creature decks like Goblins. 2 Jokulhaups ; These were honestly just for fun , but did work against WR Intitiative. Can be a hard reset against too many lock permanents and pressure; great with Omniscience. Also, Emrakul has just been better than Apex imo; I'd play four of those before the Devastator, and I've heard others agree after playing the deck a bit; as it sometimes just wins through cards like Deafening Silence; they're extra 'haste' effects next to Wanderer; and - most importantly - is far stronger out of a Show & Tell. The Commandeers in this sideboard were put there from the main, where I had them - partly because the card can be hilarious. I like some extra interaction vs unfair decks, but they are for sure not ideal as they reduce your consistency. They do help out of the board against decks like Reanimator and other combo decks.

I don't have any money, sadly, but I have some fun modern ideas I've been wanting to get out for years. Phil, you gotta stop shit talking people giving decks interesting names. Maybe we shouldn't just label a deck for comparison on the the stats websites. Finding fun in the game in a way that isn't just just focused on tournament wins, but actually building a community and culture is something we should be actively encouraging.

What I am doing is building a community. Non-informative deck names make formats utterly inaccessible to new players. It's a terrible gatekeeping process that I've been campaigning against for years.

@@ThrabenUniversity What you're doing is commendable and that's why I continuously watch your content (top marks; the best stuff) but it is wholly uncomparable to the topic. Deck naming is not for the purpose of "gatekeeping;" it's a point of individual expression within the culture. The creator of the deck stamps it with a point of pride in the manner they see fit. Do you go through the grocery store and scoff at the names of the items on the shelf? Should "Frank's Red Hot Buffalo Sauce" be named "buttery cayenne pepper sauce #3" ? Do you see the sign for McDonald's and think it should be named "Large Burger Restaurant Corporation #1" ? Surely this would be more conveyant of the nature of the thing on its surface, but a very brief investigation into the matter would give all of the information you need to know. I would think that wishing for this naming convention is not something you do, because you understand that if someone were to be unaware of what those names represent that there is readily available access to this information that no one will keep from them. You understand that these intellectual properties exist within a social context where humans appreciate and encourage individual labels in this regard. Even you can't deny that you refer to decks as "Tron, 8-Post, TES, Burn, Maverick or your personal forte DEATH AND TAXES" and use terms such as "on the play/draw, wheel, ramp, and tutor." And I don't think you do so because you feel you might alienate or draw the ire of fellow seasoned players if you used only technical/descriptive terms. You are a member of the community and use the language of the culture. TL;DR You can choose to die on this hill as is your right to do so, but at best it would be considered naive and at worst disingenuous.

Ok…this is a long one, so strap in… Phil, I really appreciate your content and how much it has helped me progress as a Magic player. I recently got MTGO and have been playing Boros burn in Modern quite extensively against a decent amount of decks (beat rakdos scam btw!). Nevertheless, despite the fact that Legacy and Modern are two completely different formats, your basic competative heuristics have helped me so much in becoming a better player. If it weren’t for you, Nikachu, and ThatMillGuy, I wouldn’t be the player that I am today. Thank you!

The dinosaur slots in so nicely. I have no idea what one would replace on the sideboard side , you mentioned you dont know what its for but the cascade and discover lines make the card pool limited for what you can sideboard unless its "fine to cascade into". Maybe a card that stops people countering you? But doing anything like that makes the cascade stack much smaller

Cool deck! I’m not really convinced that this is better than a non-Show and Tell Creatuve technique deck though? If you wanted more speed normally, you could maindeck the throes of chaos trickery thing probably.

True, but the problem is that Dinosaur and Throes of Chaos + Trickery are pretty bad in the same deck.. because if you Dinosaur into Trickery there might not be any spell on the stack to counter with Trickery. So I made this version (based on the very first Technique deck I built) as I did want some more speed, and wanted to test Dinosaur both as a big body and as an answer to Archon of Emeria et al. Mostly made this list when I figured that putting in Dino off of Show & Tell was actually a decent plan, thus significantly increasing the number of things that combine with Show & Tell.

Show and tell REALLY brings this decks power level up IMO. Being able to just oops out an omniscience on turn 2 really gives you a viable early game against faster decks. You COULD even put 4 sneak attack in the board and have a transformational board into pure sneak and show, which is interesting.

Have you seen explorer/pioneer decklists with this? They have 0 chance of fizzling as they are build to safely do turn 3 combo from single card. You get Geological Appraiser for 4CMC and then cascade into Eldritch Evolution (3CMC) and you sac it for dinosaur. Rest of your decks are clones and other type cards that you continue to clone clone clone until you have enough then you put Doomskar Titan or other stuff that gives you ETB + Haste for all creatures and this is how you have nearly always guaranteed turn 3 kill.. Yes it's insane 1 card combo and really hard to play against although in legacy you may have many more options to stop it.

The deck doesn't interact and actually has a lot of counter play in pioneer the issue is people don't like to change how they approach the game. Look at the decks weaknesses. Due to how discover works its slow and doesn't interact well early game. It's reliant on etb triggers unlike cascade. This means 1 control decks have a great matchup 2 cards like hushbringer can shut the deck down. You can also make eldritch evo not useable with cards like cage or use something like drannith magistrate to slow down discover. You can also play cards like authority of the consuls or archon of emeria effects. To name a few. The decks taking the biggest ls are also the ones who have dominated the metagame like rakdos or mono green both still have game against it. And unlike winota is much slower

Why no Quintorius, once again? Couldn't this deck be mixed with Quintorius combo as Discover 5 means creative technique 4 through 8??? AND drain for 2 for each discover and cascade trigger? Like, rather than show and tell which bricks all discovers and cascades

I think the mechanic is solid, but Cascade (its sister mechanic) has a long history of being used in unfair ways rather than fair ways. I think Discover into a fair card like Solitude is totally fine in terms of power level, whereas something like Discover into a game-winning chain of spells isn't.

@@ThrabenUniversity you think I meant solitude, I meant solitaire (a game you play by yourself with a whole deck of cards). Discovering into a spark double or clever impersonator or whatever blue nonsense is playing solitaire.
